1 P oi, chiamati a sé i suoi dodici discepoli, diede loro autorità sopra gli spiriti immondi per scacciarli e per guarire qualunque malattia e qualunque infermità.

And having called to him his twelve disciples, he gave to them power over unclean spirits, so as to be casting them out, and to be healing every sickness, and every malady.

2 O ra i nomi dei dodici apostoli sono questi: il primo Simone detto Pietro e Andrea suo fratello Giacomo di Zebedeo e Giovanni suo fratello

And of the twelve apostles the names are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James of Zebedee, and John his brother;

3 F ilippo e Bartolomeo; Tommaso e Matteo il pubblicano, Giacomo di Alfeo e Lebbeo, soprannominato Taddeo;

Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax-gatherer; James of Alpheus, and Lebbeus who was surnamed Thaddeus;

4 S imone il Cananeo e Giuda Iscariota, quello che poi lo tradí.

Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who did also deliver him up.

5 Q uesti sono i dodici che Gesú inviò dopo aver dato loro questi ordini: «Non andate tra i gentili e non entrate in alcuna città dei Samaritani,

These twelve did Jesus send forth, having given command to them, saying, `To the way of the nations go not away, and into a city of the Samaritans go not in,

6 m a andate piuttosto alle pecore perdute della casa d'Israele,

and be going rather unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

7 A ndate e predicate, dicendo: "il regno dei cieli è vicino",

`And, going on, proclaim saying that, the reign of the heavens hath come nigh;

8 G uarite gli infermi, mondate i lebbrosi, risuscitate i morti, scacciate i demoni; gratuitamente avete ricevuto, gratuitamente date.

infirm ones be healing, lepers be cleansing, dead be raising, demons be casting out -- freely ye did receive, freely give.

9 N on fate provvista di oro, né di argento né di denaro nelle vostre cinture,

`Provide not gold, nor silver, nor brass in your girdles,

10 n é di sacca da viaggio, né di due tuniche, né di calzari, né di bastone, perché l'operaio è degno del suo nutrimento.

nor scrip for the way, nor two coats, nor sandals, nor staff -- for the workman is worthy of his nourishment.

11 O ra, in qualunque città o villaggio entrate, informatevi se vi sia qualcuno degno e lí rimanete fino alla vostra partenza,

`And into whatever city or village ye may enter, inquire ye who in it is worthy, and there abide, till ye may go forth.

12 E quando entrate nella casa, datele il vostro saluto,

And coming to the house salute it,

13 E se quella è degna, venga la vostra pace su di essa; ma, se non è degna, la vostra pace ritorni a voi.

and if indeed the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it; and if it be not worthy, let your peace turn back to you.

14 E se qualcuno non vi riceve e non ascolta le vostre parole, uscendo da quella casa o da quella città, scuotete la polvere dai vostri piedi,

`And whoever may not receive you nor hear your words, coming forth from that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet,

15 V i dico in verità che, nel giorno del giudizio, il paese di Sodoma e di Gomorra sarà trattato con piú tolleranza di quella città.

verily I say to you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.

16 E cco, io vi mando come pecore in mezzo ai lupi; siate dunque prudenti come serpenti e semplici come colombe.

`Lo, I do send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves, be ye therefore wise as the serpents, and simple as the doves.

17 M a guardatevi dagli uomini, perché vi trascineranno davanti ai loro sinedri, e vi flagelleranno nelle loro sinagoghe,

And, take ye heed of men, for they will give you up to sanhedrims, and in their synagogues they will scourge you,

18 E sarete condotti davanti ai governatori e davanti ai re, per causa mia, per dare testimonianza a loro e ai gentili.

and before governors and kings ye shall be brought for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the nations.

19 Q uando essi vi metteranno nelle loro mani, non preoccupatevi di come parlerete o di che cosa dovrete dire; perché in quella stessa ora vi sarà dato ciò che dovrete dire;

`And whenever they may deliver you up, be not anxious how or what ye may speak, for it shall be given you in that hour what ye shall speak;

20 p oiché non sarete voi a parlare, ma lo Spirito del Padre vostro che parla in voi.

for ye are not the speakers, but the Spirit of your Father that is speaking in you.

21 O ra il fratello consegnerà a morte il fratello e il padre il figlio; e i figli insorgeranno contro i genitori e li faranno morire.

`And brother shall deliver up brother to death, and father child, and children shall rise up against parents, and shall put them to death,

22 E sarete odiati da tutti a causa del mio nome; ma chi avrà perseverato fino alla fine, sarà salvato,

and ye shall be hated by all because of my name, but he who hath endured to the end, he shall be saved.

23 O ra, quando vi perseguiteranno in una città, fuggite a in un'altra, perché in verità vi dico, che non avrete finito di percorrere le città d'Israele, prima che venga il Figlio dell'uomo.

`And whenever they may persecute you in this city, flee to the other, for verily I say to you, ye may not have completed the cities of Israel till the Son of Man may come.

24 I l discepolo non è da piú del maestro, né il servo da piú del suo signore,

`A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his lord;

25 B asta al discepolo di essere come il suo maestro e al servo come il suo padrone. Se hanno chiamato il padrone di casa Beelzebub, quanto piú chiameranno cosí quelli di casa sua!

sufficient to the disciple that he may be as his teacher, and the servant as his lord; if the master of the house they did call Beelzeboul, how much more those of his household?

26 N on li temete dunque, poiché non c'è nulla di nascosto che non debba essere rivelato e nulla di segreto che non debba essere conosciuto.

`Ye may not, therefore, fear them, for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed, and hid, that shall not be known;

27 Q uello che io vi dico nelle tenebre, ditelo nella luce, e ciò che udite dettovi all'orecchio, predicatelo sui tetti.

that which I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light, and that which you hear at the ear, proclaim on the house-tops.

28 E non temete coloro che uccidono il corpo, ma non possono uccidere l'anima; temete piuttosto colui che può far perire l'anima e il corpo nella Geenna.

`And be not afraid of those killing the body, and are not able to kill the soul, but fear rather Him who is able both soul and body to destroy in gehenna.

29 N on si vendono forse due passeri per un soldo? Eppure neanche uno di loro cade a terra senza il volere del Padre vostro.

`Are not two sparrows sold for an assar? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father;

30 M a quanto a voi, perfino i capelli del vostro capo sono tutti contati.

and of you -- even the hairs of the head are all numbered;

31 N on temete dunque; voi siete da piú di molti passeri.

be not therefore afraid, than many sparrows ye are better.

32 C hiunque perciò mi riconoscerà, davanti agli uomini, io pure lo riconoscerò davanti al Padre mio che è nei cieli.

`Every one, therefore, who shall confess in me before men, I also will confess in him before my Father who is in the heavens;

33 M a chiunque mi rinnegherà davanti agli uomini, io pure lo rinnegherò davanti al Padre mio che è nei cieli».

and whoever shall deny me before men, I also will deny him before my Father who is in the heavens.

34 « Non pensate che io sia venuto a mettere pace sulla terra; non sono venuto a mettervi la pace, ma la spada.

`Ye may not suppose that I came to put peace on the earth; I did not come to put peace, but a sword;

35 P erché io sono venuto a mettere disaccordo tra figlio e padre tra figlia e madre, tra nuora e suocera,

for I came to set a man at variance against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law,

36 e i nemici dell'uomo saranno quelli di casa sua.

and the enemies of a man are those of his household.

37 C hi ama padre o madre piú di me, non è degno di me; e chi ama figlio o figlia piú di me, non è degno di me.

`He who is loving father or mother above me, is not worthy of me, and he who is loving son or daughter above me, is not worthy of me,

38 E chi non prende la sua croce e non viene dietro a me, non è degno di me.

and whoever doth not receive his cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me.

39 C hi avrà trovato la sua vita, la perderà; ma chi avrà perduto la sua vita per causa mia, la ritroverà.

`He who found his life shall lose it, and he who lost his life for my sake shall find it.

40 C hi riceve voi, riceve me; e chi riceve me, riceve colui che mi ha mandato.

`He who is receiving you doth receive me, and he who is receiving me doth receive Him who sent me,

41 C hi riceve un profeta nel nome di un profeta, riceverà un premio da profeta; e chi riceve un giusto nel nome di un giusto, riceverà un premio da giusto.

he who is receiving a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive a prophet's reward, and he who is receiving a righteous man in the name of a righteous man, shall receive a righteous man's reward,

42 E chiunque darà da bere anche un solo bicchiere d'acqua fredda a uno di questi piccoli nel nome di un discepolo, in verità vi dico, che egli non perderà affatto il suo premio»,

and whoever may give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say to you, he may not lose his reward.'
