1 « Cantico di Asaf.» Presta attenzione, o popolo mio, alla mia legge; porgi orecchio alle parole della mia bocca.

An Instruction of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my law, Incline your ear to sayings of my mouth.

2 A prirò la mia bocca per proferire parabole, ed esporrò i misteri dei tempi antichi.

I open with a simile my mouth, I bring forth hidden things of old,

3 C iò che noi abbiamo udito e conosciuto, e che i nostri padri ci hanno raccontato,

That we have heard and do know, And our fathers have recounted to us.

4 n on lo nasconderemo ai loro figli, ma racconteremo alla generazione futura le lodi dell'Eterno, la sua potenza e le meraviglie che egli ha fatto.

We do not hide from their sons, To a later generation recounting praises of Jehovah, And His strength, and His wonders that He hath done.

5 E gli ha stabilito una testimonianza in Giacobbe e ha posto una legge in Israele, e ha comandato ai nostri padri di farle conoscere ai loro figli,

And He raiseth up a testimony in Jacob, And a law hath placed in Israel, That He commanded our fathers, To make them known to their sons.

6 a ffinché la generazione futura le conoscesse, assieme ai figli che sarebbero nati, ed essi a loro volta le narrassero ai loro figli,

So that a later generation doth know, Sons who are born, do rise and recount to their sons,

7 e ponessero in DIO la loro fiducia e non dimenticassero le opere di DIO, ma osservassero i suoi comandamenti;

And place in God their confidence, And forget not the doings of God, But keep His commands.

8 e non fossero come i loro padri, una generazione ostinata e ribelle, una generazione il cui cuore non fu costante, il cui spirito non fu fedele verso DIO.

And they are not like their fathers, A generation apostate and rebellious, A generation! it hath not prepared its heart, Nor stedfast with God its spirit.

9 I figli di Efraim, gente di guerra, buoni arcieri, voltarono le spalle nel giorno della battaglia,

Sons of Ephraim -- armed bearers of bow, Have turned in a day of conflict.

10 n on osservarono il patto di DIO e rifiutarono di camminare secondo la sua legge

They have not kept the covenant of God, And in His law they have refused to walk,

11 d imenticarono le sue opere e le meraviglie che aveva loro mostrato.

And they forget His doings, And His wonders that He shewed them.

12 E gli fece prodigi in presenza dei loro padri, nel paese di Egitto, nella campagna di Tsoan.

Before their fathers He hath done wonders, In the land of Egypt -- the field of Zoan.

13 E gli divise il mare e li fece passare nel mezzo, e ammassò le acque come in un mucchio.

He cleft a sea, and causeth them to pass over, Yea, He causeth waters to stand as a heap.

14 D IO giorno li condusse con la nuvola e tutta la notte con una luce di fuoco,

And leadeth them with a cloud by day, And all the night with a light of fire.

15 S paccò le rocce nel deserto e li abbeverò copiosamente, come dal grande abisso.

He cleaveth rocks in a wilderness, And giveth drink -- as the great deep.

16 F ece scaturire ruscelli dalla roccia e scorrere acque simili a fiumi.

And bringeth out streams from a rock, And causeth waters to come down as rivers.

17 M a essi continuarono a peccare contro di lui e a ribellarsi all'Altissimo nel deserto,

And they add still to sin against Him, To provoke the Most High in the dry place.

18 e tentarono DIO in cuor loro, chiedendo cibo secondo le loro voglie.

And they try God in their heart, To ask food for their lust.

19 E parlarono contro DIO, dicendo: «Potrebbe DIO imbandire una mensa nel deserto?

And they speak against God -- they said: `Is God able to array a table in a wilderness?'

20 E cco, egli percosse la roccia e ne sgorgarono acque e ne strariparono torrenti. Potrebbe dare anche del pane e provvedere della carne per il suo popolo?».

Lo, He hath smitten a rock, And waters flow, yea, streams overflow. `Also -- bread He able to give? Doth He prepare flesh for His people?'

21 E cosí l'Eterno li udí e si adirò fieramente, e un fuoco si accese contro Giacobbe e l'ira divampò contro Israele,

Therefore hath Jehovah heard, And He sheweth Himself wroth, And fire hath been kindled against Jacob, And anger also hath gone up against Israel,

22 p erché non avevano creduto in DIO e non avevano avuto fiducia nella sua salvezza.

For they have not believed in God, Nor have they trusted in His salvation.

23 T uttavia egli comandò alle nuvole di sopra e aperse le porte del cielo,

And He commandeth clouds from above, Yea, doors of the heavens He hath opened.

24 e fece piovere su di loro la manna da mangiare e diede loro il frumento del cielo.

And He raineth on them manna to eat, Yea, corn of heaven He hath given to them.

25 L 'uomo mangiò il pane degli angeli; egli mandò loro del cibo a sazietà.

Food of the mighty hath each eaten, Venison He sent to them to satiety.

26 F ece levare in cielo il vento orientale e con la sua potenza fece alzare l'austro,

He causeth an east wind to journey in the heavens, And leadeth by His strength a south wind,

27 f ece piovere su di loro della carne come polvere e uccelli come la sabbia del mare.

And He raineth on them flesh as dust, And as sand of the seas -- winged fowl,

28 L i fece cadere in mezzo al loro campo, intorno alle loro tende.

And causeth to fall in the midst of His camp, Round about His tabernacles.

29 C osí essi mangiarono fino a satollarsi, perché DIO aveva provveduto loro ciò che essi avevano desiderato.

And they eat, and are greatly satisfied, And their desire He bringeth to them.

30 E ssi non avevano ancora soddisfatto la loro ingordigia e avevano ancora del cibo in bocca,

They have not been estranged from their desire, Yet their food in their mouth,

31 q uando l'ira di DIO si scatenò contro di loro, uccise i piú vigorosi di loro e abbattè i migliori d'Israele.

And the anger of God hath gone up against them, And He slayeth among their fat ones, And youths of Israel He caused to bend.

32 C on tutto ciò continuarono a peccare e non credettero alle sue meraviglie.

With all this they have sinned again, And have not believed in His wonders.

33 A llora egli consumò i loro giorni in vanità e gli anni loro in spaventi improvvisi.

And He consumeth in vanity their days, And their years in trouble.

34 Q uando li uccideva, essi lo cercavano e ritornavano a ricercare DIO con assiduità.

If He slew them, then they sought Him, And turned back, and sought God earnestly,

35 S i ricordavano che DIO era la loro Rocca e che il DIO altissimo era il loro Redentore.

And they remember that God their rock, And God Most High their redeemer.

36 E ssi però lo ingannavano con la loro bocca e gli mentivano con la loro lingua.

And -- they deceive Him with their mouth, And with their tongue do lie to Him,

37 I l loro cuore infatti non era fermo verso di lui e non erano fedeli al suo patto.

And their heart hath not been right with Him, And they have not been stedfast in His covenant.

38 M a egli, che è misericordioso, perdonò la loro iniquità e non li distrusse, e molte volte trattenne la sua ira e non lasciò divampare il suo sdegno,

And He -- the Merciful One, Pardoneth iniquity, and destroyeth not, And hath often turned back His anger, And waketh not up all His fury.

39 r icordando che essi erano carne, un soffio che passa e non ritorna.

And He remembereth that they flesh, A wind going on -- and it returneth not.

40 Q uante volte lo provocarono a sdegno nel deserto e lo contristarono nella solitudine!

How often do they provoke Him in the wilderness, Grieve Him in the desolate place?

41 S í, essi tentarono DIO piú volte e tornarono a provocare il Santo d'Israele.

Yea, they turn back, and try God, And the Holy One of Israel have limited.

42 N on si ricordarono piú della sua potenza né del giorno in cui li aveva liberati dal nemico,

They have not remembered His hand The day He ransomed them from the adversary.

43 q uando egli aveva compiuto i suoi prodigi in Egitto e i suoi miracoli nella campagna di Tsoan;

When He set His signs in Egypt, And His wonders in the field of Zoan,

44 a veva mutato i fiumi e i corsi d'acqua degli Egiziani in sangue, perché non vi potessero bere.

And He turneth to blood their streams, And their floods they drink not.

45 A veva mandato contro di loro sciami di mosche a divorarli e rane per distruggerli.

He sendeth among them the beetle, and it consumeth them, And the frog, and it destroyeth them,

46 A veva dato i loro raccolti ai bruchi e il frutto delle loro fatiche alle locuste.

And giveth to the caterpillar their increase, And their labour to the locust.

47 A veva distrutto le loro vigne con la grandine e i loro sicomori col gelo.

He destroyeth with hail their vine, And their sycamores with frost,

48 A veva abbandonato il loro bestiame alla grandine e le loro greggi ai fulmini.

And delivereth up to the hail their beasts, And their cattle to the burning flames.

49 A veva scatenato su di loro l'ardore della sua ira indignazione cruccio e calamità, una torma di messaggeri di sventura.

He sendeth on them the fury of His anger, Wrath, and indignation, and distress -- A discharge of evil messengers.

50 A veva dato libero corso alla sua ira e non li aveva risparmiati dalla morte, ma aveva abbandonato la loro vita alla pestilenza.

He pondereth a path for His anger, He kept not back their soul from death, Yea, their life to the pestilence He delivered up.

51 A veva percosso tutti i primogeniti in Egitto e le primizie del vigore nelle tende di Cam.

And He smiteth every first-born in Egypt, The first-fruit of the strong in tents of Ham.

52 M a aveva fatto partire il suo popolo come un gregge e lo aveva condotto per il deserto come una mandria.

And causeth His people to journey as a flock, And guideth them as a drove in a wilderness,

53 L i aveva guidati sicuri ed essi non ebbero paura, ma il mare aveva inghiottito i loro nemici.

And He leadeth them confidently, And they have not been afraid, And their enemies hath the sea covered.

54 E d egli li portò cosí nella sua terra santa, al monte che la sua destra aveva conquistato.

And He bringeth them in unto the border of His sanctuary, This mountain His right hand had got,

55 S cacciò le nazioni davanti a loro e le assegnò loro in sorte come eredità, e fece abitare le tribú d'Israele nelle loro tende.

And casteth out nations from before them, And causeth them to fall in the line of inheritance, And causeth the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents,

56 M a essi tentarono e provocarono a sdegno il DIO altissimo e non osservarono i suoi statuti.

And they tempt and provoke God Most High, And His testimonies have not kept.

57 A nzi si tirarono indietro e si comportarono slealmente come i loro padri e si sviarono come un arco fallace;

And they turn back, And deal treacherously like their fathers, They have been turned like a deceitful bow,

58 l o provocarono ad ira coi loro alti luoghi e lo mossero a gelosia con le loro sculture.

And make Him angry with their high places, And with their graven images make Him zealous,

59 D IO udí e si adirò, e provò una grande avversione per Israele.

God hath heard, and sheweth Himself wroth. And kicketh exceedingly against Israel.

60 E gli abbandono cosí il tabernacolo, di Sciloh, la tenda che aveva piantato fra gli uomini;

And He leaveth the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent He had placed among men,

61 e lasciò andare la sua forza in cattività e la sua gloria in mano del nemico.

And He giveth His strength to captivity, And His beauty into the hand of an adversary,

62 A bbandonò il suo popolo alla spada e si adirò grandemente contro la sua eredità.

And delivereth up to the sword His people, And with His inheritance shewed Himself angry.

63 I l fuoco consumò i loro giovani, e le loro vergini non ebbero alcun canto nuziale.

His young men hath fire consumed, And His virgins have not been praised.

64 I loro sacerdoti caddero per la spada e le loro vedove non fecero cordoglio.

His priests by the sword have fallen, And their widows weep not.

65 P oi il Signore si risvegliò come dal sonno, simile a un prode che grida eccitato dal vino.

And the Lord waketh as a sleeper, As a mighty one crying aloud from wine.

66 P ercosse i suoi nemici alle spalle e li coperse di un eterno vituperio.

And He smiteth His adversaries backward, A reproach age-during He hath put on them,

67 R ipudiò la tenda di Giuseppe e non scelse la tribú di Efraim,

And He kicketh against the tent of Joseph, And on the tribe of Ephraim hath not fixed.

68 m a scelse la tribú di Giuda, il monte di Sion, che egli ama.

And He chooseth the tribe of Judah, With mount Zion that He loved,

69 E dificò il suo santuario, come i luoghi altissimi, come la terra che ha fondato per sempre.

And buildeth His sanctuary as a high place, Like the earth, He founded it to the age.

70 E scelse Davide suo servo, e lo prese dagli ovili di pecore.

And He fixeth on David His servant, And taketh him from the folds of a flock,

71 L o portò via dalle pecore che allattavano, per pascere Giacobbe suo popolo, e Israele sua eredità.

From behind suckling ones He hath brought him in, To rule over Jacob His people, And over Israel His inheritance.

72 E d egli li fece pascere secondo l'integrità del suo cuore e li guidò con la destrezza delle sue mani.

And he ruleth them according to the integrity of his heart, And by the skilfulness of his hands leadeth them!
