1 T u innalza una lamentazione sui principi d'Israele e di':

And thou, lift up a lamentation unto princes of Israel,

2 « Che cos'era tua madre? Una leonessa: stava accovacciata tra i leoni, allevava i suoi piccoli in mezzo ai leoncelli.

and thou hast said: What thy mother? -- a lioness, Among lions she hath crouched down, In the midst of young lions she hath multiplied her whelps.

3 F ece crescere uno dei suoi piccoli che divenne un leoncello; imparò a sbranare la preda e divorò uomini.

And she bringeth up one of her whelps, A young lion it hath been, And it learneth to tear prey, man it hath devoured.

4 A nche le nazioni sentirono parlare di lui; egli fu preso nella loro fossa e lo condussero incatenato nel paese d'Egitto.

And hear of it do nations, In their pit it hath been caught, And they bring it in with chains unto the land of Egypt.

5 Q uando essa vide che l'attesa si protraeva e la sua speranza era perduta, prese un altro dei suoi piccoli e ne fece un leoncello.

And she seeth, that stayed -- perished hath her hope, And she taketh one of her whelps, A young lion she hath made it.

6 E sso andava e veniva fra i leoni; divenne un leoncello, imparò a sbranare la preda e divorò uomini.

And it goeth up and down in the midst of lions, A young lion it hath been, And it learneth to tear prey, man it hath devoured.

7 V enne a conoscere i loro luoghi desolati e devastò le loro città; il paese con tutto quello che conteneva fu desolato al rumore del suo ruggito.

And it knoweth his forsaken habitations, And their cities it hath laid waste, And desolate is the land and its fulness, Because of the voice of his roaring.

8 M a contro di lui vennero le nazioni da tutte le regioni circostanti, tesero su di lui la loro rete e fu preso nella loro fossa.

And set against it do nations Round about from the provinces. And they spread out for it their net, In their pit it hath been caught.

9 L o misero incatenato in una gabbia e lo condussero al re di Babilonia; lo condussero in una fortezza, perché la sua voce non fosse piú udita sui monti d'Israele.

And they put it in prison -- in chains, And they bring it unto the king of Babylon, They bring it in unto bulwarks, So that its voice is not heard any more On mountains of Israel.

10 T ua madre era simile a una vite piantata vicino alle acque; era rigogliosa e aveva molti rami per l'acqua abbondante.

Thy mother as a vine in thy blood by waters planted, Fruitful and full of boughs it hath been, Because of many waters.

11 A veva rami robusti idonei per scettri reali, nella sua altezza sovrastava sul folto dei rami ed appariva nella sua elevatezza per la moltitudine dei suoi rami.

And it hath strong rods for sceptres of rulers, And high is its stature above thick branches, And it appeareth in its height In the multitude of its thin shoots.

12 M a fu sradicata con furore e gettata a terra; il vento dell'est ne seccò il frutto i suoi forti rami furono strappati via e seccarono, il fuoco li divorò.

And it is plucked up in fury, To the earth it hath been cast, And the east wind hath dried up its fruit, Broken and withered hath been the rod of its strength, Fire hath consumed it.

13 O ra è piantata nel deserto in un suolo arido ed assetato;

And now -- it is planted in a wilderness, In a land dry and thirsty.

14 u n fuoco è uscito da una verga dei suoi rami e ne ha divorato il frutto; in essa non c'è piú alcun ramo robusto idoneo per scettri reali». Questa è una lamentazione ed è diventata una lamentazione.

And go forth doth fire from a rod of its boughs, Its fruit it hath devoured, And it hath no rod of strength -- a sceptre to rule, Lamentation it -- and it is for a lamentation!'
