1 A llora Giobbe rispose e disse:

And Job answereth and saith: --

2 « Ascoltate attentamente ciò che dico, e sia questo il conforto che mi date.

Hear ye diligently my word, And this is your consolation.

3 A bbiate pazienza con me e lasciatemi parlare e, quando avrò parlato, deridetemi pure.

Bear with me, and I speak, And after my speaking -- ye may deride.

4 M i lamento forse di un uomo? E perché il mio spirito non dovrebbe rattristarsi?

I -- to man my complaint? and if, wherefore May not my temper become short?

5 G uardatemi e stupite, e mettetevi la mano sulla bocca.

Turn unto me, and be astonished, And put hand to mouth.

6 Q uando ci penso, ne sono spaventato e la mia carne è presa da un tremito.

Yea, if I have remembered, then I have been troubled. And my flesh hath taken fright.

7 P erché mai vivono gli empi, e perchè invecchiano ed accrescono le loro ricchezze?

Wherefore do the wicked live? They have become old, Yea, they have been mighty in wealth.

8 L a loro discendenza si afferma insieme ad essi sotto i loro sguardi e i loro rampolli fioriscono sotto i loro occhi.

Their seed is established, Before their face with them, And their offspring before their eyes.

9 L e loro case sono al sicuro, senza spaventi, e la verga di Dio non grava su di loro.

Their houses peace without fear, Nor a rod of God upon them.

10 I l loro toro feconda e non falla, la loro vacca figlia senza abortire.

His bullock hath eaten corn, and doth not loath. His cow bringeth forth safely, And doth not miscarry.

11 M andano fuori come un gregge i loro piccoli, e i loro figli saltano.

They send forth as a flock their sucklings, And their children skip,

12 C antano al suono di timpano e di cetra e si rallegrano al suono del flauto.

They lift up at timbrel and harp, And rejoice at the sound of an organ.

13 T rascorrono nel benessere i loro giorni, poi in un momento scendono nello Sceol.

They wear out in good their days, And in a moment Sheol go down.

14 E ppure dicevano a Dio: "Allontanati da noi, perché non desideriamo affatto conoscere le tue vie.

And they say to God, `Turn aside from us, And the knowledge of Thy ways We have not desired.

15 C hi è l'Onnipotente perché dobbiamo servirlo? Che ci giova inoltre pregarlo?

What the Mighty One that we serve Him? And what do we profit when we meet with Him?'

16 E cco, la loro prosperità non sta forse nelle loro mani? Il consiglio degli empi è ben lontano da me.

Lo, not in their hand their good, (The counsel of the wicked Hath been far from me.)

17 Q uante volte si spegne la lampada dei malvagi o la distruzione si abbatte su di loro, le sofferenze che Dio assegna nella sua ira?

How oft is the lamp of the wicked extinguished, And come on them doth their calamity? Pangs He apportioneth in His anger.

18 S ono essi come paglia davanti al vento o come pula portata via dall'uragano?

They are as straw before wind, And as chaff a hurricane hath stolen away,

19 V oi dite che Dio conserva la punizione dell'iniquità di uno per i suoi figli. Lo ripaghi Dio, perché egli possa capire.

God layeth up for his sons his sorrow, He giveth recompense unto him -- and he knoweth.

20 V eda con i suoi occhi la sua distruzione e beva dell'ira dell'Onnipotente!

His own eyes see his destruction, And of the wrath of the Mighty he drinketh.

21 C he cosa gl'importa infatti della sua casa dopo la morte, quando il numero dei suoi mesi è compiuto?

For what his delight in his house after him, And the number of his months cut off?

22 P uò qualcuno insegnare a Dio conoscenza, a lui che giudica quelli di lassú?

To God doth teach knowledge, And He the high doth judge?

23 U no muore nel suo pieno vigore, tutto tranquillo e sicuro

This dieth in his perfect strength, Wholly at ease and quiet.

24 h a i secchi pieni di latte e il midollo delle sue ossa è fresco.

His breasts have been full of milk, And marrow his bones doth moisten.

25 U n altro invece muore con l'anima amareggiata, senza aver mai gustato il bene.

And this dieth with a bitter soul, And have not eaten with gladness.

26 A mbedue giacciono insieme nella polvere e i vermi li ricoprono.

Together -- on the dust they lie down, And the worm doth cover them over.

27 E cco, io conosco i vostri pensieri e i piani con i quali mi vorreste fare violenza

Lo, I have known your thoughts, And the devices against me ye do wrongfully.

28 I nfatti voi dite: "Dov'è la casa del principe, e dov'è la tenda, la dimora dei malvagi?

For ye say, `Where the house of the noble? And where the tent -- The tabernacles of the wicked?'

29 N on avete interrogato quelli che viaggiano e non riconoscete i loro segni?

Have ye not asked those passing by the way? And their signs do ye not know?

30 I malvagi infatti sono risparmiati nel giorno della distruzione e sono portati in salvo nel giorno dell'ira.

That to a day of calamity is the wicked spared. To a day of wrath they are brought.

31 C hi gli rinfaccia la sua condotta e chi lo ripaga per ciò che ha fatto?

Who doth declare to his face his way? And that which he hath done, Who doth give recompence to him?

32 E gli è portato alla sepoltura e si farà la guardia sulla sua tomba.

And he -- to the graves he is brought. And over the heap a watch is kept.

33 L e zolle della valle gli saranno dolci, tutta la gente lo seguirà, mentre una folla immensa lo precede.

Sweet to him have been the clods of the valley, And after him every man he draweth, And before him there is no numbering.

34 C ome potete dunque consolarmi con parole vane, dato che dalle vostre parole non rimane che falsità?».

And how do ye comfort me vanity, And in your answers hath been left trespass?
