1 D eh, ascoltate ciò che dice l'Eterno: «Lèvati, difendi la tua causa davanti ai monti e i colli odano la tua voce».

Hear, I pray you, that which Jehovah is saying: `Rise -- strive thou with the mountains, And cause thou the hills to hear thy voice.'

2 A scoltate, o monti, la contesa dell'Eterno, e voi saldi fondamenti della terra, perché l'Eterno ha una contesa con il suo popolo e vuol discutere con Israele.

Hear, O mountains, the strife of Jehovah, Ye strong ones -- foundations of earth! For a strife to Jehovah, with His people, And with Israel He doth reason.

3 « Popolo mio, che cosa ti ho fatto e in che cosa ti ho stancato? Testimonia contro di me.

O My people, what have I done to thee? And what -- have I wearied thee? Testify against Me.

4 P oiché io ti ho fatto uscire dal paese d'Egitto, ti ho redento dalla casa di schiavitù e ho mandato davanti a te Mosè, Aaronne e Miriam.

For I brought thee up from the land of Egypt, And from the house of servants I have ransomed thee, And I send before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

5 O popolo mio, ricorda dunque ciò che Balak, re di Moab, macchinava e che cosa gli rispose Balaam, figlio di Beor, da Scittim a Ghilgal, affinché tu riconosca la giustizia dell'Eterno».

O My people, remember, I pray you, What counsel did Balak king of Moab, What answer him did Balaam son of Beor, (From Shittim unto Gilgal,) In order to know the righteous acts of Jehovah.'

6 C on che cosa verso davanti all'Eterno e mi inchinerò davanti al DIO eccelso? Verrò davanti a lui con olocausti, con vitelli di un anno?

With what do I come before Jehovah? Do I bow to God Most High? Do I come before Him with burnt-offerings? With calves -- sons of a year?

7 G radirà l'Eterno migliaia di montoni o miriadi di rivi d'olio? Darò il mio primogenito, per la mia trasgressione, il frutto delle mie viscere per il peccato della mia anima?

Is Jehovah pleased with thousands of rams? With myriads of streams of oil? Do I give my first-born my transgression? The fruit of my body the sin of my soul?

8 O uomo, egli ti ha fatto conoscere ciò che è bene; e che altro richiede da te l'Eterno, se non praticare la giustizia, amare la clemenza e camminare umilmente col tuo DIO?

He hath declared to thee, O man, what good; Yea, what is Jehovah requiring of thee, Except -- to do judgment, and love kindness, And lowly to walk with thy God?

9 L a voce dell'Eterno grida alla città, e chi ha sapienza riconoscerà il tuo nome: «Fate attenzione alla verga e a colui che l'ha designata.

A voice of Jehovah to the city calleth, And wisdom doth fear Thy name, Hear ye the rod, and Him who appointed it.

10 V i sono ancora nella casa dell'empio tesori di iniquità e l'efa scarsa che è una cosa abominevole?

Are there yet the house of the wicked Treasures of wickedness, And the abhorred scanty ephah?

11 P osso dichiarare puro l'uomo con bilance non giuste e col sacchetto di pesi falsi?

Do I reckon pure with balances of wickedness? And with a bag of deceitful stones?

12 I suoi ricchi infatti sono pieni di violenza, i suoi abitanti proferiscono menzogne e la loro lingua non è che frode nella loro bocca.

Whose rich ones have been full of violence, And its inhabitants have spoken falsehood, And their tongue deceitful in their mouth.

13 P erciò anch'io ti renderò sofferente, colpendoti e rendendoti desolata a motivo dei tuoi peccati.

And I also, I have begun to smite thee, To make desolate, because of thy sins.

14 T u mangerai, ma non ti sazierai e la fame rimarrà dentro di te; porterai via, ma non salverai niente, e quel che avrai salvato, lo consegnerò alla spada.

Thou -- thou eatest, and thou art not satisfied, And thy pit in thy midst, And thou removest, and dost not deliver, And that which thou deliverest, to a sword I give.

15 T u seminerai, ma non mieterai; pigerai le olive, ma non ti ungerai d'olio; farai il mosto, ma non berrai il vino.

Thou -- thou sowest, and thou dost not reap, Thou -- thou treadest the olive, And thou pourest not out oil, And new wine -- and thou drinkest not wine.

16 S i osservano gli statuti di Omri e tutte le pratiche della casa di Achab, e voi camminate seguendo i loro consigli, perché io vi renda una desolazione, e i tuoi abitanti un oggetto di derisione. Cosí voi porterete il vituperio del mio popolo!».

And kept habitually are the statutes of Omri, And all the work of the house of Ahab, And ye do walk in their counsels, For My giving thee for a desolation, And its inhabitants for a hissing, And the reproach of My people ye do bear!
