1 T u dunque, figlio mio, fortificati nella grazia che è in Cristo Gesú;

Thou, therefore, my child, be strong in the grace that in Christ Jesus,

2 e le cose che hai udite da me in presenza di molti testimoni, affidale a uomini fedeli, che siano capaci di insegnarle anche ad altri.

and the things that thou didst hear from me through many witnesses, these things be committing to stedfast men, who shall be sufficient also others to teach;

3 T u dunque sopporta sofferenze, come un buon soldato di Gesú Cristo.

thou, therefore, suffer evil as a good soldier of Jesus Christ;

4 N essuno che presta servizio come soldato s'immischia nelle faccende della vita, se vuol piacere a colui che lo ha arruolato.

no one serving as a soldier did entangle himself with the affairs of life, that him who did enlist him he may please;

5 S imilmente, se uno compete nelle gare atletiche, riceve la corona unicamente se ha lottato secondo le regole.

and if also any one may strive, he is not crowned, except he may strive lawfully;

6 L 'agricoltore, che lavora duramente, deve essere il primo a goderne i frutti.

the labouring husbandman it behoveth first of the fruits to partake;

7 C onsidera le cose che dico, poiché il Signore ti darà intendimento in ogni cosa.

be considering what things I say, for the Lord give to thee understanding in all things.

8 R icordati che Gesú Cristo, della stirpe di Davide, è risorto dai morti secondo il mio evangelo,

Remember Jesus Christ, raised out of the dead, of the seed of David, according to my good news,

9 p er il quale io soffro fino a portare le catene come un malfattore, ma la parola di Dio non è incatenata.

in which I suffer evil -- unto bonds, as an evil-doer, but the word of God hath not been bound;

10 P erciò io soffro ogni cosa per gli eletti, affinché anch'essi ottengano la salvezza che è in Cristo Gesú insieme alla gloria eterna.

because of this all things do I endure, because of the choice ones, that they also salvation may obtain that in Christ Jesus, with glory age-during.

11 Q uesta parola è fedele, perché se siamo morti con lui, con lui pure vivremo;

Stedfast the word: For if we died together -- we also shall live together;

12 s e perseveriamo, regneremo pure con lui; se lo rinneghiamo, egli pure ci rinnegherà.

if we do endure together -- we shall also reign together; if we deny, he also shall deny us;

13 S e siamo infedeli, egli rimane fedele, perché egli non può rinnegare se stesso.

if we are not stedfast, he remaineth stedfast; to deny himself he is not able.

14 R icorda loro queste cose, scongiurandoli davanti al Signore a non fare vane dispute di parole che non giovano a nulla, ma sono deleterie per coloro che ascoltano

These things remind of, testifying fully before the Lord -- not to strive about words to nothing profitable, but to the subversion of those hearing;

15 S tudiati di presentare te stesso approvato davanti a Dio, operaio che non ha da vergognarsi, che esponga rettamente la parola della verità.

be diligent to present thyself approved to God -- a workman irreproachable, rightly dividing the word of the truth;

16 M a evita i discorsi vani e profani, perché fanno progredire nell'empietà;

and the profane vain talkings stand aloof from, for to more impiety they will advance,

17 e la parola di questi andrà rodendo come la cancrena; fra costoro sono Imeneo e Fileto,

and their word as a gangrene will have pasture, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus,

18 i quali si sono sviati dalla verità, dicendo che la risurrezione è già avvenuta, e sovvertono la fede di alcuni.

who concerning the truth did swerve, saying the rising again to have already been, and do overthrow the faith of some;

19 T uttavia il saldo fondamento di Dio rimane fermo, avendo questo sigillo: «Il Signore conosce quelli che sono suoi», e: «Si ritragga dall'iniquità chiunque nomina il nome di Cristo».

sure, nevertheless, hath the foundation of God stood, having this seal, `The Lord hath known those who are His,' and `Let him depart from unrighteousness -- every one who is naming the name of Christ.'

20 O r in una grande casa non vi sono soltanto vasi d'oro e d'argento, ma anche di legno e di terra; gli uni sono ad onore, gli altri a disonore.

And in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth, and some to honour, and some to dishonour:

21 S e dunque uno si purifica da queste cose, sarà un vaso ad onore, santificato e utile al servizio del padrone, preparato per ogni buona opera.

if, then, any one may cleanse himself from these, he shall be a vessel to honour, sanctified and profitable to the master -- to every good work having been prepared,

22 O r fuggi le passioni giovanili, ma persegui la giustizia, la fede, l'amore e la pace con quelli che con cuore puro invocano il Signore.

and the youthful lusts flee thou, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those calling upon the Lord out of a pure heart;

23 E vita inoltre le discussioni stolte e insensate, sapendo che generano contese.

and the foolish and uninstructed questions be avoiding, having known that they beget strife,

24 O ra un servo del Signore non deve contendere, ma deve essere mite verso tutti, atto ad insegnare e paziente,

and a servant of the Lord it behoveth not to strive, but to be gentle unto all, apt to teach, patient under evil,

25 a mmaestrando con mansuetudine gli oppositori, nella speranza che Dio conceda loro di ravvedersi perché giungano a riconoscere la verità,

in meekness instructing those opposing -- if perhaps God may give to them repentance to an acknowledging of the truth,

26 e ritornino in sé, sottraendosi dal laccio del diavolo, che li aveva fatti prigionieri, perché facessero la sua volontà.

and they may awake out of the devil's snare, having been caught by him at his will.
