1 Q uando Sanballat, Tobiah e Ghescem l'Arabo e gli altri nostri nemici seppero che io avevo ricostruito le mura e che non vi era piú rimasta alcuna breccia (quantunque allora non avessi ancora messo i battenti alle porte)

And it cometh to pass, when it hath been heard by Sanballat, and Tobiah, and by Geshem the Arabian, and by the rest of our enemies, that I have builded the wall, and there hath not been left in it a breach, (also, till that time the doors I had not set up in the gates,)

2 S anballat e Ghescem mi mandarono a dire: «Vieni e troviamoci assieme in uno dei villaggi della valle di Ono». Essi però pensavano di farmi del male.

that Sanballat sendeth, also Geshem, unto me, saying, `Come and we meet together in the villages, in the valley of Ono;' and they are thinking to do to me evil.

3 C osí io mandai loro dei messaggeri a dire: «Sto facendo un grande lavoro e non posso scendere. Perché si dovrebbe interrompere il lavoro, mentre io lo lascio per scendere da voi?».

And I send unto them messengers, saying, `A great work I am doing, and I am not able to come down; why doth the work cease when I let it alone, and have come down unto you?'

4 P er ben quattro volte essi mi mandarono a dire la stessa cosa, e io risposi loro nello stesso modo.

and they send unto me, according to this word, four times, and I return them according to this word.

5 A llora Sanballat mi mandò il suo servo a dirmi la stessa cosa per la quinta volta con in mano una lettera aperta,

And Sanballat sendeth unto me, according to this word, a fifth time, his servant, and an open letter in his hand;

6 n ella quale stava scritto: «Corre voce fra le nazioni, e Gashmu l'afferma, che tu e i Giudei tramate di ribellarvi perciò, secondo queste voci, tu stai ricostruendo le mura, per diventare il loro re,

it is written in it, `Among the nations it hath been heard, and Gashmu is saying: Thou and the Jews are thinking to rebel, therefore thou art building the wall, and thou hast been to them for a king -- according to these words!

7 e avresti persino stabilito dei profeti per fare la tua proclamazione a Gerusalemme, dicendo: "C'è un re in Giuda! Ora, queste cose saranno riferite al re. Perciò vieni e consultiamoci assieme».

And also, prophets thou hast appointed to call for thee in Jerusalem, saying, A king in Judah, and now it is heard by the king according to these words; and now come, and we take counsel together.'

8 M a io gli mandai a dire: «Le cose non stanno come tu vai dicendo, ma tu le inventi nella tua stessa mente».

And I send unto him, saying, `It hath not been according to these words that thou art saying, for from thine own heart thou art devising them;'

9 T utta quella gente infatti voleva farci paura e diceva: «Le loro mani lasceranno il lavoro che rimarrà incompiuto». Ora perciò, o DIO, fortifica le mie mani!

for all of them are making us afraid, saying, `Their hands are too feeble for the work, and it is not done;' and now, strengthen Thou my hands.

10 I o andai allora a casa di Scemaiah, figlio di Delaiah, figlio di Mehetabeel, che si era rinchiuso là dentro; egli mi disse: «Troviamoci assieme nella casa di DIO, dentro il tempio, e chiudiamo le porte del tempio, perché verranno ad ucciderti; essi verranno a ucciderti di notte».

And I have entered the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabeel -- and he is restrained -- and he saith, `Let us meet at the house of God, at the inside of the temple, and we shut the doors of the temple, for they are coming in to slay thee -- yea, by night they are coming in to slay thee.'

11 M a io risposi: «Può un uomo come me darsi alla fuga? Potrebbe un uomo simile a me entrare nel tempio per salvare la vita? No, io non entrerò».

And I say, `A man such as I -- doth he flee? and who as I, that doth go in unto the temple, and live? -- I do not go in.'

12 C ompresi poi che DIO non l'aveva mandato, ma aveva pronunciato quella profezia contro di me, perché Tobiah e Sanballat l'avevano pagato.

And I discern, and lo, God hath not sent him, for in the prophecy he hath spoken unto me both Tobiah and Sanballat hired him,

13 E ra stato pagato proprio per questo: per farmi paura e indurmi ad agire in quel modo e a peccare, e cosí acquistare una cattiva fama e coprirmi di vergogna.

so that he an hireling, that I may fear and do so, and I had sinned, and it had been to them for an evil name that they may reproach me.

14 O mio DIO, ricordati di Tobiah e di Sanballat, per queste loro opere, e anche della profetessa Noadiah e degli altri profeti che hanno cercato di spaventarmi!

Be mindful, O my God, of Tobiah, and of Sanballat, according to these his works, and also, of Noadiah the prophetess, and of the rest of the prophets who have been making me afraid.

15 O r le mura furono condotte a termine il venticinquesimo giorno del mese di Elul, in cinquantadue giorni.

And the wall is completed in the twenty and fifth of Elul, on the fifty and second day;

16 Q uando tutti i nostri nemici lo vennero a sapere e tutte le nazioni che ci stavano attorno lo videro, si sentirono grandemente abbattuti, perché si resero conto che quest'opera si era compiuta con l'aiuto del nostro DIO.

and it cometh to pass, when all our enemies have heard, and all the nations who are round about us see, that they fall greatly in their own eyes, and know that by our God hath this work been done.

17 I n quei giorni anche i notabili di Giuda mandavano frequenti lettere a Tobiah, e ne ricevevano da Tobiah.

Also, in those days the freemen of Judah are multiplying their letters going unto Tobiah, and those of Tobiah are coming in unto them;

18 M olti in Giuda erano infatti legati a lui con giuramento, perché egli era genero di Scekaniah figlio di Arah, e suo figlio Jehohanan aveva sposato la figlia di Meshullam, figlio di Berekiah.

for many in Judah are sworn to him, for he son-in-law to Shechaniah son of Arah, and Jehohanan his son hath taken the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah;

19 A nche in mia presenza parlavano bene di lui e gli riferivano le mie parole. E Tobiah mandava lettere per spaventarmi

also, his good deeds they have been saying before me, and my words they have been taking out to him; letters hath Tobiah sent to make me afraid.
