1 I n quel tempo non c'era re in Israele; in quello stesso tempo la tribú dei Daniti cercava per sé un territorio per stabilirsi, perché fino a quei giorni non le era stata assegnata alcuna eredità fra le tribú d'Israele.

In those days there is no king in Israel, and in those days the tribe of the Danite is seeking for itself an inheritance to inhabit, for hath not fallen to it unto that day in the midst of the tribes of Israel by inheritance.

2 I figli di Dan mandarono dunque da Tsorah e da Eshtaol cinque uomini valorosi, che rappresentavano l'intera loro tribú per perlustrare il paese ed esplorarlo; e dissero loro: «Andate ad esplorare il paese!». Così essi giunsero nella regione montuosa di Efraim, alla casa di Mikah, e pernottarono in quel luogo.

And the sons of Dan send, out of their family, five men of them, men, sons of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to traverse the land, and to search it, and they say unto them, `Go, search the land;' and they come into the hill-country of Ephraim, unto the house of Micah, and lodge there.

3 M entre erano presso la casa di Mikah, riconobbero la voce del giovane Levita; essi allora entrarono in casa e gli chiesero: «Chi ti ha condotto qua? Che fai in questo luogo? Che hai tu qui?».

They with the household of Micah, and they have discerned the voice of the young man, the Levite, and turn aside there, and say to him, `Who hath brought thee hither? and what art thou doing in this and what to thee here?'

4 E gli rispose loro: «Mikah mi ha fatto questo e questo; mi ha assunto a servizio e io gli faccio da sacerdote».

And he saith unto them, `Thus and thus hath Micah done to me; and he hireth me, and I am to him for a priest.'

5 A llora essi gli dissero: «Deh, consulta DIO, affinché sappiamo se il viaggio che abbiamo intrapreso sarà prospero».

And they say to him, `Ask, we pray thee, at God, and we know whether our way is prosperous on which we are going.'

6 I l sacerdote rispose loro: «Andate in pace; il viaggio che fate è sotto lo sguardo dell'Eterno».

And the priest saith to them, `Go in peace; over-against Jehovah your way in which ye go.'

7 C osì i cinque uomini partirono e giunsero a Laish, e videro che il popolo che vi abitava viveva al sicuro, secondo le usanze di quei di Sidone, tranquillo e sicuro, perché non c'era nessuno nel paese che imponesse alcuna restrizione e che li potesse riprovare; essi erano lontani da quei di Sidone e non avevano relazione con alcuno.

And the five men go, and come in to Laish, and see the people which in its midst, dwelling confidently, according to the custom of Zidonians, quiet and confident; and there is none putting to shame in the land in thing, possessing restraint, and they far off from the Zidonians, and have no word with man.

8 P oi tornarono ai loro fratelli a Tsorah e a Eshtaol; e i fratelli chiesero loro: «Che dite?».

And they come in unto their brethren, at Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brethren say to them, `What -- ye?'

9 E ssi risposero: «Leviamoci e saliamo contro quella gente, perché abbiamo visto il paese, ed è veramente eccellente. Perché ve ne rimanete inattivi? Non indugiate a muovervi per andare ad occupare il paese!

And they say, `Rise, and we go up against them, for we have seen the land, and lo, very good; and ye are keeping silent! be not slothful to go -- to enter to possess the land.

10 Q uando arriverete troverete un popolo sicuro e un paese vasto, perché DIO ve lo ha dato nelle mani: è un luogo dove non manca nulla di ciò che è sulla terra».

When ye go, ye come in unto a people confident, and the land large on both hands, for God hath given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything which in the land.'

11 A llora seicento uomini della famiglia dei Daniti partirono da Tsorah e da Eshtaol, ben armati per la guerra.

And there journey thence, of the family of the Danite, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, six hundred men girded with weapons of war.

12 S alirono e si accamparono a Kirjath-Jearim, in Giuda; (perciò quel luogo che è dietro a Kirjath-Jearim, è chiamato fino al giorno d'oggi il campo di Dan).

And they go up and encamp in Kirjath-Jearim, in Judah, therefore they have called that place, `Camp of Dan,' till this day; lo, behind Kirjath-Jearim.

13 D i là passarono nella regione montuosa di Efraim e giunsero alla casa di Mikah.

And they pass over thence the hill-country of Ephraim, and come in unto the house of Micah.

14 A llora i cinque uomini che erano andati ad esplorare il paese di Laish, presero a dire ai loro fratelli: «Sapete voi che in queste case c'è un efod, una casa di idoli, un'immagine scolpita e un'immagine di metallo fuso? Perciò ora considerate ciò che dovete fare.

And the five men, those going to traverse the land of Laish, answer and say unto their brethren, `Have ye known that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and graven image, and molten image? and now, know what ye do.'

15 C osì essi si diressero da quella parte, giunsero alla casa del giovane Levita, alla casa di Mikah, e lo salutarono.

And they turn aside thither, and come in unto the house of the young man the Levite, the house of Micah, and ask of him of welfare, --

16 M entre i seicento uomini dei figli di Dan, ben armati per la guerra, rimanevano davanti alla porta,

(and the six hundred men girded with their weapons of war, who of the sons of Dan, are standing at the opening of the gate), --

17 i cinque uomini che erano andati ad esplorare il paese salirono, entrarono in casa, presero l'immagine scolpita, l'efod, la casa di idoli e l'immagine di metallo fuso. Or il sacerdote stava davanti alla porta con i seicento uomini ben armati per la guerra.

yea, the five men, those going to traverse the land, go up -- they have come in thither -- they have taken the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image -- and the priest is standing at the opening of the gate, and the six hundred men who are girded with weapons of war --

18 Q uando questi entrarono in casa di Mikah e presero l'immagine scolpita, l'efod, la casa di idoli e l'immagine di metallo fuso, il sacerdote disse loro: «Che fate?».

yea, these have entered the house of Micah, and take the graven image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest saith unto them, `What are ye doing?'

19 Q uelli gli risposero: «Taci, mettiti la mano sulla bocca, vieni con noi, e sarai per noi un padre e un sacerdote. Che cosa è meglio per te, essere sacerdote della casa di un uomo solo o essere sacerdote di una tribú e di una famiglia in Israele?».

and they say to him, `Keep silent, lay thy hand on thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us for a father and for a priest: is it better thy being a priest to the house of one man, or thy being priest to a tribe and to a family in Israel?'

20 C osì il sacerdote si rallegrò in cuor suo; prese l'efod, la casa di idoli e l'immagine scolpita e si unì a quella gente.

And the heart of the priest is glad, and he taketh the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and goeth into the midst of the people,

21 A llora si rimisero in cammino, mettendo davanti a loro i bambini il bestiame e le masserizie.

and they turn and go, and put the infants, and the cattle, and the baggage, before them.

22 Q uando erano già lontani dalla casa di Mikah, gli uomini che abitavano nelle case vicine a quella di Mikah si radunarono e inseguirono i figli di Dan.

They have been far off from the house of Micah -- and the men who in the houses which near the house of Micah have been called together, and overtake the sons of Dan,

23 G ridarono quindi ai figli di Dan. Questi si voltarono e dissero a Mikah: «Che cosa hai, che hai radunata codesta gente?».

and call unto the sons of Dan, and they turn round their faces, and say to Micah, `What -- to thee that thou hast been called together?'

24 E gli rispose: «Avete portato via gli dèi che mi ero fatto e il sacerdote, e ve ne siete andati. Or che mi resta? Come potete dunque dirmi: "Che cosa hai?".

And he saith, `My gods which I made ye have taken, and the priest, and ye go; and what to me more? and what this ye say unto me, What -- to thee!'

25 I figli di Dan gli dissero: «Fa' che la tua voce non si senta piú dietro a noi, perché degli uomini irritati potrebbero scagliarsi su di voi, e tu perderesti la tua vita e quella della tua famiglia!».

And the sons of Dan say unto him, `Let not thy voice be heard with us, lest men bitter in soul fall upon you, and thou hast gathered thy life, and the life of thy household;'

26 I figli di Dan continuarono il loro viaggio; e Mikah, vedendo che essi erano piú forti di lui, si voltò e fece ritorno a casa sua.

and the sons of Dan go on their way, and Micah seeth that they are stronger than he, and turneth, and goeth back unto his house.

27 C osì essi, dopo aver preso le cose che Mikah aveva fatto e il sacerdote che aveva al suo servizio, giunsero a Laish a un popolo che se ne stava tranquillo e al sicuro; lo passarono a fil di spada e diedero la città alle fiamme.

And they have taken that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and come in against Laish, against a people quiet and confident, and smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the city have burnt with fire,

28 N on ci fu alcuno che la liberasse, perché era lontana da Sidone e i suoi abitanti non avevano relazioni con altra gente Essa era nella valle che si estende verso Beth-Rehob. Poi i Daniti ricostruirono la città e l'abitarono,

and there is no deliverer, for it far off from Zidon, and they have no word with man, and it in the valley which by Beth-Rehob; and they build the city, and dwell in it,

29 e la chiamarono Dan, dal nome di Dan loro padre, che Fu Figlio d'Israele; ma prima la città si chiamava Laish.

and call the name of the city Dan, by the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; and yet Laish the name of the city at the first.

30 P oi i figli di Dan eressero per sé l'immagine scolpita; e Gionathan, figlio di Ghershom, figlio di Manasse, e i suoi figli furono sacerdoti della tribú dei Daniti fino al giorno della cattività degli abitanti del paese.

And the sons of Dan raise up for themselves the graven image, and Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Manasseh, he and his sons have been priests to the tribe of the Danite, till the day of the removal of of the land.

31 C osì eressero per sé l'immagine scolpita che Mikah aveva fatto, durante tutto il tempo che la casa di DIO rimase a Sciloh.

And they appoint for them the graven image of Micah, which he had made, all the days of the house of God being in Shiloh.
