1 Т ого часу не було царя в Ізраїлі, і того часу Данове плем'я шукало собі наділу на оселю, бо до того дня не випало йому жеребка на наділ серед Ізраїлевих племен.

In those days there is no king in Israel, and in those days the tribe of the Danite is seeking for itself an inheritance to inhabit, for hath not fallen to it unto that day in the midst of the tribes of Israel by inheritance.

2 І Данові сини послали зо свого роду п'ятеро люда з загалу людей військових, щоб вони вивідали Край та дослідили його. І сказали до них: Ідіть, дослідіть цей Край. І вони зійшли на Єфремові гори аж до Михиного дому, і переночували там.

And the sons of Dan send, out of their family, five men of them, men, sons of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to traverse the land, and to search it, and they say unto them, `Go, search the land;' and they come into the hill-country of Ephraim, unto the house of Micah, and lodge there.

3 К оли вони були біля Михиного дому, то вони пізнали голос того юнака Левита, та й знайшли туди й сказали йому: Хто тебе привів сюди, і що ти тут робиш? І що ти тут маєш?

They with the household of Micah, and they have discerned the voice of the young man, the Levite, and turn aside there, and say to him, `Who hath brought thee hither? and what art thou doing in this and what to thee here?'

4 І сказав він до них: Так і так зробив мені Миха, і він найняв мене, і я став йому за священика.

And he saith unto them, `Thus and thus hath Micah done to me; and he hireth me, and I am to him for a priest.'

5 А вони сказали йому: Запитай же Бога, і нехай ми пізнаємо, чи пощаститься наша дорога, якою ми йдемо.

And they say to him, `Ask, we pray thee, at God, and we know whether our way is prosperous on which we are going.'

6 І сказав їм священик: Ідіть із миром, перед Господом ваша дорога, якою ви підете.

And the priest saith to them, `Go in peace; over-against Jehovah your way in which ye go.'

7 І пішли ті п'ятеро людей, і прийшли в Лаїш та й побачили той народ, що в ньому, він сидить безпечно, за звичаєм сидонян, спокійний та безпечний. І не було нікого, хто робив би їм щось зле в Краю, посів би владу над ними, і вони далеко від сидонян, і нема їм діла ні до кого.

And the five men go, and come in to Laish, and see the people which in its midst, dwelling confidently, according to the custom of Zidonians, quiet and confident; and there is none putting to shame in the land in thing, possessing restraint, and they far off from the Zidonians, and have no word with man.

8 І прийшли вони до братів своїх у Цор'у та в Ештаол. І сказали їм брати їх: Що ви принесли?

And they come in unto their brethren, at Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brethren say to them, `What -- ye?'

9 А вони відказали: Устаньте, і підемо на них, бо ми бачили той Край, і ось дуже він добрий. А ви мовчите? Не лініться, щоб піти, щоб прийти та посісти той Край.

And they say, `Rise, and we go up against them, for we have seen the land, and lo, very good; and ye are keeping silent! be not slothful to go -- to enter to possess the land.

10 Я к ви підете, то ввійдете до народу безпечного, а Край той широкий, бо Бог дав його в вашу руку, це місце, що там нема недостачі жодної речі, що на землі.

When ye go, ye come in unto a people confident, and the land large on both hands, for God hath given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything which in the land.'

11 І рушили звідти з Данового роду з Цор'и та з Ештаолу шістсот чоловіка, оперезаних зброєю.

And there journey thence, of the family of the Danite, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, six hundred men girded with weapons of war.

12 І пішли вони й таборували в Кір'ят-Єарімі в Юді. Тому вони назвали ім'я тому місцю: Махане-Дан, і так воно зветься аж до цього дня, оце за Кір'ят-Єарімом.

And they go up and encamp in Kirjath-Jearim, in Judah, therefore they have called that place, `Camp of Dan,' till this day; lo, behind Kirjath-Jearim.

13 І перейшли вони звідти на Єфремові гори, і прийшли аж до Михиного дому.

And they pass over thence the hill-country of Ephraim, and come in unto the house of Micah.

14 І відповіли п'ятеро тих мужів, що ходили вивідати той Край до Лаїшу, і сказали своїм браттям: Чи ви знаєте, що в цих домах є ефод та терафи, і бовван різьблений та бовван литий? А тепер знайте, що зробите.

And the five men, those going to traverse the land of Laish, answer and say unto their brethren, `Have ye known that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and graven image, and molten image? and now, know what ye do.'

15 І вони зайшли туди до дому того юнака Левита, до Михиного дому, і запитали його про мир.

And they turn aside thither, and come in unto the house of the young man the Levite, the house of Micah, and ask of him of welfare, --

16 А шість сотень мужа, що з Данових синів, оперезаних своєю зброєю, стояли при вході до брами.

(and the six hundred men girded with their weapons of war, who of the sons of Dan, are standing at the opening of the gate), --

17 І пішли п'ятеро тих мужів, що ходили вивідати той Край, увійшли туди, узяли різьбленого боввана, і ефода та терафи, і боввана литого. А при вході до брами стояв священик та шістсот мужа, оперезаних зброєю.

yea, the five men, those going to traverse the land, go up -- they have come in thither -- they have taken the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image -- and the priest is standing at the opening of the gate, and the six hundred men who are girded with weapons of war --

18 І ті ввійшли до Михиного дому, і взяли різьбленого боввана, ефода й терафи та боввана литого. І сказав до них той священик: Що ви робите?

yea, these have entered the house of Micah, and take the graven image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest saith unto them, `What are ye doing?'

19 А вони відказали йому: Мовчи! Поклади свою руку на уста свої та й іди з нами, і стань нам за отця та за священика. Чи тобі ліпше бути священиком дому одного чоловіка, чи бути тобі священиком для племени та для роду Ізраїлевого?

and they say to him, `Keep silent, lay thy hand on thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us for a father and for a priest: is it better thy being a priest to the house of one man, or thy being priest to a tribe and to a family in Israel?'

20 І стало добре на серці того священика, і він узяв ефода та терафи й різьбленого боввана, і ввійшов поміж народ.

And the heart of the priest is glad, and he taketh the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and goeth into the midst of the people,

21 І повернулися вони та й пішли, а дітей, і худобу, і тягар пустили перед себе.

and they turn and go, and put the infants, and the cattle, and the baggage, before them.

22 К оли вони віддалилися від Михиного дому, то люди, що в домах, які разом із домом Михиним, були скликані, та й догнали Данових синів.

They have been far off from the house of Micah -- and the men who in the houses which near the house of Micah have been called together, and overtake the sons of Dan,

23 І кричали вони до Данових синів, а ті обернули обличчя свої та й сказали до Михи: Що тобі, що ти кричиш?

and call unto the sons of Dan, and they turn round their faces, and say to Micah, `What -- to thee that thou hast been called together?'

24 І він сказав: Ви забрали бога мого, що я зробив, та священика, та й пішли. І що мені ще? І що то ви говорите мені: що тобі?

And he saith, `My gods which I made ye have taken, and the priest, and ye go; and what to me more? and what this ye say unto me, What -- to thee!'

25 І сказали до нього Данові сини: Мовчи, щоб не чути нам твого голосу, а то наші люди із злости нападуть на вас, і ти долучиш душу свою до своєї рідні.

And the sons of Dan say unto him, `Let not thy voice be heard with us, lest men bitter in soul fall upon you, and thou hast gathered thy life, and the life of thy household;'

26 І Данові сини пішли на свою дорогу. І побачив Миха, що вони сильніші від нього, і обернувся, та й пішов до свого дому.

and the sons of Dan go on their way, and Micah seeth that they are stronger than he, and turneth, and goeth back unto his house.

27 А вони взяли, що зробив був Миха, та священика, що був у нього, та й пішли на Лаїш, на народ спокійний та безпечний. І вони побили їх вістрям меча, а місто спалили огнем.

And they have taken that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and come in against Laish, against a people quiet and confident, and smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the city have burnt with fire,

28 А рятівника не було, бо далеке воно від Сидону, і не було в них діла ні з ким, і воно було в долині, що при Бет-Рехові. А вони збудували місто, та й осілися в ньому.

and there is no deliverer, for it far off from Zidon, and they have no word with man, and it in the valley which by Beth-Rehob; and they build the city, and dwell in it,

29 І вони назвали ім'я тому містові: Дан, іменем Дана, їхнього батька, що був уроджений Ізраїлеві, але напочатку ім'я того міста було Лаїш.

and call the name of the city Dan, by the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; and yet Laish the name of the city at the first.

30 І поставили Данові сини того різьбленого боввана в себе, а Йонатан, син Ґершома, Манасіїного сина, він та сини його були священиками для Данового племени аж до дня виходу на вигнання того краю.

And the sons of Dan raise up for themselves the graven image, and Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Manasseh, he and his sons have been priests to the tribe of the Danite, till the day of the removal of of the land.

31 І поклали вони в себе Михиного різьбленого боввана, що зробив він, і він був у них по всі дні буття Божого дому в Шіло.

And they appoint for them the graven image of Micah, which he had made, all the days of the house of God being in Shiloh.
