1 ( 21-2) І прийшов Давид до Нова, до священика Ахімелеха. А Ахімелех із тремтінням стрів Давида й сказав йому: Чому ти сам, і нікого немає з тобою?

And David cometh in to Nob, unto Ahimelech the priest, and Ahimelech trembleth at meeting David, and saith to him, `Wherefore thou thyself alone, and no man with thee?'

2 ( 21-3) І сказав Давид до священика Ахімелеха: Цар наказав мені справу, і до мене сказав: Нехай ніхто не знає цього, тієї справи, за якою я посилаю тебе, і яку наказав тобі. А слуг я умовив на означене місце.

And David saith to Ahimelech the priest, `The king hath commanded me a matter, and he saith unto me, Let no man know anything of the matter about which I am sending thee, and which I have commanded thee; and the young men I have caused to know at such and such a place;

3 ( 21-4) А тепер, що є в тебе під рукою? П'ять хлібів дай у мою руку, або що знайдеться.

and now, what is there under thy hand? five loaves give into my hand, or that which is found.'

4 ( 21-5) А священик відповів Давидові та й сказав: Нема в мене звичайного хліба під рукою, а є тільки хліб святий, якщо твої слуги здержалися від жінки.

And the priest answereth David, and saith, `There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if the youths have been kept only from women.'

5 ( 21-6) І відповів Давид священикові, та й сказав йому: Так, бо жінок не було при нас як учора, так і позавчора, відколи я вийшов, і тіла слуг були чисті. А то хліб звичайний, особливо коли сьогодні замість цього інший хліб у посудині стане святим.

And David answereth the priest, and saith to him, `Surely, if women have been restrained from us as heretofore in my going out, then the vessels of the young men are holy, and it a common way: and also, surely to-day it is sanctified in the vessel.'

6 ( 21-7) І дав йому священик святе, бо не було там іншого хліба, крім хлібів показних, що були зняті з-перед Господнього лиця, щоб покласти теплий хліб того дня, коли його забирають.

And the priest giveth to him the holy thing, for there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence which is turned aside from the presence of Jehovah to put hot bread in the day of its being taken away.

7 ( 21-8) А там того дня знаходився один із Саулових рабів перед Господнім лицем, а ім'я йому Доеґ, ідумеянин, провідник пастухів, яких мав Саул.

And there a man of the servants of Saul on that day detained before Jehovah, and his name Doeg the Edomite, chief of the shepherds whom Saul hath.

8 ( 21-9) І сказав Давид до Ахімелеха: Чи нема тут у тебе під рукою списа або меча? Бо я не взяв до своєї руки ані меча свого, ані іншої зброї своєї, бо царська справа була нагла.

And David saith to Ahimelech, `And is there not here under thy hand spear or sword? for neither my sword nor my vessels have I taken in my hand, for the matter of the king was urgent.'

9 ( 21-10) А священик сказав: Є меч филистимлянина Ґоліята, що ти вбив його в долині Ела, ось він за ефодом, загорнений одежею. Якщо візьмеш його собі, візьми, бо тут нема іншого, окрім нього. І сказав Давид: Нема іншого такого, як він, дай його мені!

And the priest saith, `The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou didst smite in the valley of Elah, lo, it is wrapt in a garment behind the ephod, if it thou dost take to thyself, take; for there is none other save it in this.' And David saith, `There is none like it -- give it to me.'

10 ( 21-11) І встав Давид, і втікав того дня перед Саулом, і прибув до Ахіша, царя ґатського.

And David riseth and fleeth on that day from the face of Saul, and cometh in unto Achish king of Gath;

11 ( 21-12) І сказали до нього Ахішеві раби: Чи ж не цей Давид цар Краю? Хіба ж не про нього співають у танцях, говорячи: Саул повбивав свої тисячі, а Давид десятки тисяч свої.

and the servants of Achish say unto him, `Is not this David king of the land? is it not of this one they sing in dances, saying, `Saul smote among his thousands, and David among his myriads?'

12 ( 21-13) І заховав Давид ті слова в своєму серці, і сильно боявся Ахіша, царя ґатського.

And David layeth these words in his heart, and is exceedingly afraid of the face of Achish king of Gath,

13 ( 21-14) І змінив він свій розум на їхніх очах, і шалів при них, і бив по дверях брами, і пускав слину свою на свою бороду.

and changeth his behaviour before their eyes, and feigneth himself mad in their hand, and scribbleth on the doors of the gate, and letteth down his spittle unto his beard.

14 ( 21-15) І сказав Ахіш до своїх рабів: Ось бачите чоловіка, що сходить із розуму. Нащо привели його до мене?

And Achish saith unto his servants, `Lo, ye see a man acting as a madman; why do ye bring him in unto me?

15 ( 21-16) Чи мені бракує безумних, що ви привели його, щоб сходив із розуму передо мною? Чи такий може входити до мого дому?

A lack of madmen I, that ye have brought in this one to act as a madman by me! doth this one come in unto my house?'
