1 І сказав Давид у серці своїм: Колись я попадуся в Саулову руку. Нема мені ліпшого, як, утікаючи, утечу до филистимського краю, і відмовиться від мене Саул, щоб шукати мене вже по всій Ізраїлевій країні, і я втечу від руки його.

And David saith unto his heart, `Now am I consumed one day by the hand of Saul; there is nothing for me better than that I diligently escape unto the land of the Philistines, and Saul hath been despairing of me -- of seeking me any more in all the border of Israel, and I have escaped out of his hand.'

2 І встав Давид, і перейшов він та шість сотень чоловіка, що з ним, до Ахіша, Маохового сина, ґатського царя.

And David riseth, and passeth over, he and six hundred men who with him, unto Achish son of Maoch king of Gath;

3 І осівся Давид з Ахішем у Ґаті, він та люди його, кожен із домом своїм, Давид та дві жінки його: ізреелітка Ахіноан та Авіґаїл, колишня жінка Навалова, кармелітка.

and David dwelleth with Achish in Gath, he and his men, each one with his household, David and his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail wife of Nabal the Carmelitess.

4 І донесено Саулові, що Давид утік до Ґату, і він більш уже не шукав його.

And it is declared to Saul that David hath fled to Gath, and he hath not added any more to seek him.

5 А Давид сказав до Ахіша: Якщо я знайшов милість в очах твоїх, нехай дадуть мені місце в одному з міст цієї землі, і нехай я осяду там. І чого сидітиме раб твій у місті твого царства разом із тобою?

And David saith unto Achish, `If, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes, they give to me a place in one of the cities of the field, and I dwell there, yea, why doth thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?'

6 І дав йому Ахіш того дня Ціклаґ, чому належить Ціклаґ Юдиним царям аж до цього дня.

And Achish giveth to him in that day Ziklag, therefore hath Ziklag been to the kings of Judah till this day.

7 А число днів, що Давид сидів на филистимській землі, було рік та чотири місяці.

And the number of the days which David hath dwelt in the field of the Philistines days and four months;

8 І сходив Давид та люди його, і нападали на Ґешуреянина, і на Ґірзеянина, і на Амаликитянина, бо вони мешканці цього краю відвіку, аж доти, як іти до Шуру, і аж до єгипетського краю.

and David goeth up and his men, and they push unto the Geshurite, and the Gerizite, and the Amalekite, (for they are inhabitants of the land from of old), as thou comest in to Shur and unto the land of Egypt,

9 І побивав Давид той край, і не лишав при житті ані чоловіка, ані жінки, і забирав худобу дрібну та худобу велику, і осли, і верблюди, і одежу, і вертався, і приходив до Ахіша.

and David hath smitten the land, and doth not keep alive man and woman, and hath taken sheep, and oxen, and asses, and camels, and garments, and turneth back, and cometh in unto Achish.

10 І питався Ахіш: На кого нападали ви сьогодні? А Давид казав: На південь Юдин, і на південь Єрахмеелеянина, і на південь Кенеянина.

And Achish saith, `Whither have ye pushed to-day?' and David saith, `Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelite, and unto the south of the Kenite.'

11 А Давид не лишав при житті ані чоловіка, ані жінки, щоб привести до Ґату, говорячи: Щоб не донесли на нас, кажучи: Так зробив Давид, і такий його звичай по всі дні, коли сидів на филистимській землі.

Neither man nor woman doth David keep alive, to bring in to Gath, saying, `Lest they declare against us, saying, Thus hath David done, and thus his custom all the days that he hath dwelt in the fields of the Philistines.'

12 І вірив Ахіш Давидові, говорячи: Справді обриднув він своєму народові в Ізраїлі, і буде мені за вічного раба!

And Achish believeth in David, saying, `He hath made himself utterly abhorred among his people, in Israel, and hath been to me for a servant age-during.'
