1 І сказали пророчі сини до Єлисея: Ось те місце, де ми сидимо перед тобою, затісне для нас.

And sons of the prophet say unto Elisha, `Lo, we pray thee, the place where we are dwelling before thee is too strait for us;

2 Х одім аж до Йордану, і візьмімо звідти кожен по одній деревині, і зробимо собі місце, щоб сидіти там. А він сказав: Ідіть.

let us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and we take thence each one beam, and we make for ourselves there a place to dwell there;' and he saith, `Go.'

3 І сказав один: Будь же ласкавий, і ходи зо своїми рабами! А він сказав: Я піду.

And the one saith, `Be pleased, I pray thee, and go with thy servants;' and he saith, `I -- I go.'

4 І пішов він із ними, і вони прийшли до Йордану, і рубали дерево.

And he goeth with them, and they come in to the Jordan, and cut down the trees,

5 І сталося, коли один валив деревину, то впала сокира до води. А той скрикнув і сказав: Ох, пане мій, таж вона позичена!

and it cometh to pass, the one is felling the beam, and the iron hath fallen into the water, and he crieth and saith, `Alas! my lord, and it asked!'

6 І сказав Божий чоловік: Куди вона впала? А той показав йому те місце. І він відрубав кусок дерева й кинув туди, і випливла сокира!...

And the man of God saith, `Whither hath it fallen?' and he sheweth him the place, and he cutteth a stick, and casteth thither, and causeth the iron to swim,

7 І він сказав: Витягни собі! А той простяг свою руку і взяв...

and saith, `Raise to thee;' and he putteth forth his hand and taketh it.

8 С ирійський цар воював з Ізраїлем. І радився він зо слугами своїми, говорячи: На такому то й такому то місці буде моє таборування.

And the king of Aram hath been fighting against Israel, and taketh counsel with his servants, saying, `At such and such a place my encamping.'

9 А Божий чоловік послав до Ізраїлевого царя, говорячи: Стережися переходити оце місце, бо там сходяться сиріяни!

And the man of God sendeth unto the king of Israel, saying, `Take heed of passing by this place, for thither are the Aramaeans coming down;

10 І послав Ізраїлів цар до того місця, про яке говорив йому Божий чоловік та остерігав його; і він стерігся там не раз і не два.

and the king of Israel sendeth unto the place of which the man of God spake to him, and warned him, and he is preserved there not once nor twice.

11 І сильно занепокоїлося серце сирійського царя про ту річ, і він покликав своїх слуг та й сказав до них: Чи не розповісте мені, хто з наших зраджує перед Ізраїльським царем?

And the heart of the king of Aram is tossed about concerning this thing, and he calleth unto his servants, and saith unto them, `Do ye not declare to me who of us for the king of Israel?'

12 І сказав один з його слуг: Ні, пане мій царю, це не наш, а це Єлисей, той пророк, що в Ізраїлі, доносить Ізраїлевому цареві ті слова, що ти говориш у спальні своїй!...

And one of his servants saith, `Nay, my lord, O king, for Elisha the prophet, who in Israel, declareth to the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in the inner part of thy bed-chamber.'

13 А він відказав: Ідіть, і подивіться, де він, і я пошлю й візьму його! І донесено йому, кажучи: Ось він у Дотані!

And he saith, `Go ye and see where he, and I send and take him;' and it is declared to him, saying, `Lo -- in Dothan.'

14 І послав він туди коні, і колесниці та військо. І прийшли вони вночі й оточили те місто.

And he sendeth thither horses and chariot, and a heavy force, and they come in by night, and go round against the city.

15 А слуга Божого чоловіка встав рано і вийшов, аж ось військо оточує місто, і коні, і колесниці! І сказав його слуга до нього: Ох, пане мій, що будемо робити?

And the servant of the man of God riseth early, and goeth out, and lo, a force is surrounding the city, and horse and chariot, and his young man saith unto him, `Alas! my lord, how do we do?'

16 А той відказав: Не бійся, бо ті, що з нами, численніші від тих, що з ними.

And he saith, `Fear not, for more they who with us than they who with them.'

17 І молився Єлисей і говорив: Господи, розкрий йому очі, і нехай він побачить! І відкрив Господь очі того слуги, і він побачив, аж ось гора повна коней та огняних колесниць навколо Єлисея!...

And Elisha prayeth, and saith, `Jehovah, open, I pray Thee, his eyes, and he doth see;' and Jehovah openeth the eyes of the young man, and he seeth, and lo, the hill is full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha.

18 І зійшли сирійці до нього, а Єлисей помолився до Господа й сказав: Удар цей люд сліпотою! І Він ударив їх сліпотою за Єлисеєвим словом...

And they come down unto it, and Elisha prayeth unto Jehovah, and saith, `Smite, I pray Thee, this nation with blindness;' and He smiteth them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.

19 І сказав до них Єлисей: Це не та дорога й не те місто. Ідіть за мною, й я проведу вас до того чоловіка, якого ви шукаєте. І він завів їх у Самарію.

And Elisha saith unto them, `This not the way, nor this the city; come after me, and I lead you unto the man whom ye seek;' and he leadeth them to Samaria.

20 І сталося, як прийшли вони до Самарії, то Єлисей сказав: Господи, відкрий оці очі, і нехай вони побачать! І Господь відкрив їхні очі, і вони побачили, аж ось вони в середині Самарії!...

And it cometh to pass, at their coming in to Samaria, that Elisha saith, `Jehovah, open the eyes of these, and they see;' and Jehovah openeth their eyes, and they see, and lo, in the midst of Samaria!

21 І сказав Ізраїлів цар до Єлисея, коли побачив їх: Чи побити їх, чи побити, мій батьку?

And the king of Israel saith unto Elisha, at his seeing them, `Do I smite -- do I smite -- my father?'

22 А той відказав: Не вбивай! Чи ти повбиваєш тих, кого ти взяв до неволі своїм мечем та своїм списом? Поклади хліб та воду перед ними, і нехай вони їдять та п'ють, і нехай ідуть до свого пана.

And he saith, `Thou dost not smite; those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow art thou smiting? set bread and water before them, and they eat, and drink, and go unto their lord.'

23 І справив цар для них велику гостину, і вони їли й пили; і він відпустив їх, і вони пішли до свого пана. І сирійські орди вже більш не входили до Ізраїлевого Краю.

And he prepareth for them great provision, and they eat and drink, and he sendeth them away, and they go unto their lord: and troops of Aram have not added any more to come in to the land of Israel.

24 І сталося по тому, і зібрав Бен-Гадад, сирійський цар, увесь свій табір, і він зійшов і обліг Самарію.

And it cometh to pass afterwards, that Ben-Hadad king of Aram gathereth all his camp, and goeth up, and layeth siege to Samaria,

25 І був великий голод у Самарії. І ось ті облягали їх, а осляча голова коштувала вісімдесят шеклів срібла, а чвертка каву голубиного помету п'ять шеклів срібла.

and there is a great famine in Samaria, and lo, they are laying siege to it, till the head of an ass is at eighty silverlings, and a forth of the cab of dovesdung at five silverlings.

26 І сталося, проходив Ізраїлів цар по мурі, а одна жінка крикнула до нього, говорячи: Поможи, пане царю!

And it cometh to pass, the king of Israel is passing by on the wall, and a woman hath cried unto him, saying, `Save, my lord, O king.'

27 А він відказав: Як тобі не поможе Господь, звідки я поможу тобі? Чи з току, або з чавила?

And he saith, `Jehovah doth not save thee -- whence do I save thee? out of the threshing-floor, or out of the wine-vat?'

28 І сказав до неї цар: Що тобі? А та відказала: Оця жінка сказала мені: Дай свого сина, і ми з'їмо його сьогодні, а мого сина з'їмо взавтра.

And the king saith to her, `What -- to thee?' and she saith, `This woman said unto me, Give thy son, and we eat him to-day, and my son we eat to-morrow;

29 І зварили ми мого сина та й з'їли його... І сказала я до неї другого дня: Дай сина свого, і ми з'їмо його, та вона сховала свого сина.

and we boil my son and eat him, and I say unto her on the next day, Give thy son, and we eat him; and she hideth her son.'

30 І сталося, як цар почув слова цієї жінки, то роздер шати свої, і він ходив по мурі. І народ побачив, аж ось веретище на тілі його зо споду!

And it cometh to pass, at the king's hearing the words of the woman, that he rendeth his garments, and he is passing by on the wall, and the people see, and lo, the sackcloth on his flesh within.

31 І він сказав: Отак нехай зробить мені Бог, і так нехай додасть, якщо позостанеться голова Єлисея, Шафатового сина, на ньому сьогодні!

And he saith, `Thus doth God do to me, and thus He doth add -- if it remain -- the head of Elisha son of Shaphat -- upon him this day.'

32 А Єлисей сидів у своєму домі, а з ним сиділи старші. І послав цар чоловіка від себе. Поки прийшов посол до нього, то він сказав до старших: Чи ви бачите, що цей син убивника послав зняти мою голову? Глядіть, як прийде цей посол, то замкніть двері, і притиснете його в дверях. Ось і шарудіння ніг пана його за ним.

And Elisha is sitting in his house, and the elders are sitting with him, and sendeth a man from before him; before the messenger doth come unto him, even he himself said unto the elders, `Have ye seen that this son of the murderer hath sent to turn aside my head? see, at the coming in of the messenger, shut the door, and ye have held him fast at the door, is not the sound of the feet of his lord behind him?'

33 Щ е він говорив із ними, аж ось приходить до нього посланець. І він сказав: Отаке зло від Господа! Чого ще чекати від Господа?

He is yet speaking with them, and lo, the messenger is coming down unto him, and he saith, `Lo, this the evil from Jehovah: what -- do I wait for Jehovah any more?'
