1 L os hijos de los profetas dijeron a Eliseo: He aquí, el lugar en que moramos contigo nos es estrecho.

And sons of the prophet say unto Elisha, `Lo, we pray thee, the place where we are dwelling before thee is too strait for us;

2 V amos ahora al Jordán, y tomemos de allí cada uno una viga, y hagamos allí lugar en que habitemos. Y él dijo: Andad.

let us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and we take thence each one beam, and we make for ourselves there a place to dwell there;' and he saith, `Go.'

3 Y dijo uno: Te rogamos que vengas con tus siervos. Y él respondió: Yo iré.

And the one saith, `Be pleased, I pray thee, and go with thy servants;' and he saith, `I -- I go.'

4 S e fue, pues, con ellos; y cuando llegaron al Jordán, cortaron la madera.

And he goeth with them, and they come in to the Jordan, and cut down the trees,

5 Y aconteció que mientras uno derribaba un árbol, se le cayó el hierro del hacha en el agua; y gritó diciendo: ¡Ah, señor mío, era prestado!

and it cometh to pass, the one is felling the beam, and the iron hath fallen into the water, and he crieth and saith, `Alas! my lord, and it asked!'

6 E l varón de Dios preguntó: ¿Dónde cayó? Y él le mostró el lugar. Entonces cortó él un palo, y lo echó allí; e hizo flotar el hierro.

And the man of God saith, `Whither hath it fallen?' and he sheweth him the place, and he cutteth a stick, and casteth thither, and causeth the iron to swim,

7 Y dijo: Tómalo. Y él extendió la mano, y lo tomó. Eliseo y los sirios

and saith, `Raise to thee;' and he putteth forth his hand and taketh it.

8 T enía el rey de Siria guerra contra Israel, y consultando con sus siervos, dijo: En tal y tal lugar estará mi campamento.

And the king of Aram hath been fighting against Israel, and taketh counsel with his servants, saying, `At such and such a place my encamping.'

9 Y el varón de Dios envió a decir al rey de Israel: Mira que no pases por tal lugar, porque los sirios van allí.

And the man of God sendeth unto the king of Israel, saying, `Take heed of passing by this place, for thither are the Aramaeans coming down;

10 E ntonces el rey de Israel envió a aquel lugar que el varón de Dios había dicho; y así lo hizo una y otra vez con el fin de cuidarse.

and the king of Israel sendeth unto the place of which the man of God spake to him, and warned him, and he is preserved there not once nor twice.

11 Y el corazón del rey de Siria se turbó por esto; y llamando a sus siervos, les dijo: ¿No me declararéis vosotros quién de los nuestros es del rey de Israel?

And the heart of the king of Aram is tossed about concerning this thing, and he calleth unto his servants, and saith unto them, `Do ye not declare to me who of us for the king of Israel?'

12 E ntonces uno de los siervos dijo: No, rey señor mío, sino que el profeta Eliseo está en Israel, el cual declara al rey de Israel las palabras que tú hablas en tu cámara más secreta.

And one of his servants saith, `Nay, my lord, O king, for Elisha the prophet, who in Israel, declareth to the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in the inner part of thy bed-chamber.'

13 Y él dijo: Id, y mirad dónde está, para que yo envíe a prenderlo. Y le fue dicho: He aquí que él está en Dotán.

And he saith, `Go ye and see where he, and I send and take him;' and it is declared to him, saying, `Lo -- in Dothan.'

14 E ntonces envió el rey allá gente de a caballo, y carros, y un gran ejército, los cuales vinieron de noche, y sitiaron la ciudad.

And he sendeth thither horses and chariot, and a heavy force, and they come in by night, and go round against the city.

15 Y se levantó de mañana y salió el que servía al varón de Dios, y he aquí el ejército que tenía sitiada la ciudad, con gente de a caballo y carros. Entonces su criado le dijo: ¡Ah, señor mío!, ¿qué haremos?

And the servant of the man of God riseth early, and goeth out, and lo, a force is surrounding the city, and horse and chariot, and his young man saith unto him, `Alas! my lord, how do we do?'

16 É l le dijo: No tengas miedo, porque más son los que están con nosotros que los que están con ellos.

And he saith, `Fear not, for more they who with us than they who with them.'

17 Y oró Eliseo, y dijo: Te ruego, oh Jehová, que abras sus ojos para que vea. Entonces Jehová abrió los ojos del criado, y miró; y he aquí que el monte estaba lleno de gente de a caballo, y de carros de fuego alrededor de Eliseo.

And Elisha prayeth, and saith, `Jehovah, open, I pray Thee, his eyes, and he doth see;' and Jehovah openeth the eyes of the young man, and he seeth, and lo, the hill is full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha.

18 Y luego que los sirios descendieron a él, oró Eliseo a Jehová, y dijo: Te ruego que hieras con ceguera a esta gente. Y los hirió con ceguera, conforme a la petición de Eliseo.

And they come down unto it, and Elisha prayeth unto Jehovah, and saith, `Smite, I pray Thee, this nation with blindness;' and He smiteth them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.

19 D espués les dijo Eliseo: No es éste el camino, ni es ésta la ciudad; seguidme, y yo os guiaré al hombre que buscáis. Y los guió a Samaria.

And Elisha saith unto them, `This not the way, nor this the city; come after me, and I lead you unto the man whom ye seek;' and he leadeth them to Samaria.

20 Y cuando llegaron a Samaria, dijo Eliseo: Jehová, abre los ojos de éstos, para que vean. Y Jehová abrió sus ojos, y miraron, y se hallaban en medio de Samaria.

And it cometh to pass, at their coming in to Samaria, that Elisha saith, `Jehovah, open the eyes of these, and they see;' and Jehovah openeth their eyes, and they see, and lo, in the midst of Samaria!

21 C uando el rey de Israel los hubo visto, dijo a Eliseo: ¿Los mataré, padre mío?

And the king of Israel saith unto Elisha, at his seeing them, `Do I smite -- do I smite -- my father?'

22 É l le respondió: No los mates. ¿Matarías tú a los que tomases cautivos con tu espada y con tu arco? Pon delante de ellos pan y agua, para que coman y beban, y vuelvan a sus señores.

And he saith, `Thou dost not smite; those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow art thou smiting? set bread and water before them, and they eat, and drink, and go unto their lord.'

23 E ntonces se les preparó una gran comida: y cuando habían comido y bebido, los envió, y ellos se volvieron a su señor. Y nunca más entraron bandas armadas de Siria en la tierra de Israel. Eliseo y el sitio de Samaria

And he prepareth for them great provision, and they eat and drink, and he sendeth them away, and they go unto their lord: and troops of Aram have not added any more to come in to the land of Israel.

24 D espués de esto aconteció que Ben-adad rey de Siria reunió todo su ejército, y subió y sitió a Samaria.

And it cometh to pass afterwards, that Ben-Hadad king of Aram gathereth all his camp, and goeth up, and layeth siege to Samaria,

25 Y hubo gran hambre en Samaria, a consecuencia de aquel sitio; tanto que la cabeza de un asno se vendía por ochenta piezas de plata, y la cuarta parte de un intestino de palomas por cinco piezas de plata.

and there is a great famine in Samaria, and lo, they are laying siege to it, till the head of an ass is at eighty silverlings, and a forth of the cab of dovesdung at five silverlings.

26 Y pasando el rey de Israel por el muro, una mujer le gritó, y dijo: Salva, rey señor mío.

And it cometh to pass, the king of Israel is passing by on the wall, and a woman hath cried unto him, saying, `Save, my lord, O king.'

27 Y él dijo: Si no te salva Jehová, ¿de dónde te puedo salvar yo? ¿Del granero, o del lagar?

And he saith, `Jehovah doth not save thee -- whence do I save thee? out of the threshing-floor, or out of the wine-vat?'

28 Y le dijo el rey: ¿Qué tienes? Ella respondió: Esta mujer me dijo: Da acá tu hijo, y comámoslo hoy, y mañana comeremos el mío.

And the king saith to her, `What -- to thee?' and she saith, `This woman said unto me, Give thy son, and we eat him to-day, and my son we eat to-morrow;

29 C ocimos, pues, a mi hijo, y lo comimos. El día siguiente yo le dije: Da acá tu hijo, y comámoslo. Mas ella ha escondido a su hijo.

and we boil my son and eat him, and I say unto her on the next day, Give thy son, and we eat him; and she hideth her son.'

30 C uando el rey oyó las palabras de aquella mujer, rasgó sus vestidos, y pasó así por el muro; y el pueblo vio el cilicio que traía interiormente sobre su cuerpo.

And it cometh to pass, at the king's hearing the words of the woman, that he rendeth his garments, and he is passing by on the wall, and the people see, and lo, the sackcloth on his flesh within.

31 Y él dijo: Así me haga Dios, y aun me añada, si la cabeza de Eliseo hijo de Safat queda sobre él hoy.

And he saith, `Thus doth God do to me, and thus He doth add -- if it remain -- the head of Elisha son of Shaphat -- upon him this day.'

32 Y Eliseo estaba sentado en su casa, y con él estaban sentados los ancianos; y el rey envió a él un hombre. Mas antes que el mensajero viniese a él, dijo él a los ancianos: ¿No habéis visto cómo este hijo de homicida envía a cortarme la cabeza? Mirad, pues, y cuando venga el mensajero, cerrad la puerta, e impedidle la entrada. ¿No se oye tras él el ruido de los pasos de su amo?

And Elisha is sitting in his house, and the elders are sitting with him, and sendeth a man from before him; before the messenger doth come unto him, even he himself said unto the elders, `Have ye seen that this son of the murderer hath sent to turn aside my head? see, at the coming in of the messenger, shut the door, and ye have held him fast at the door, is not the sound of the feet of his lord behind him?'

33 A ún estaba él hablando con ellos, cuando el rey mismo irrumpió en la estancia y dijo: Todo este mal viene de Jehová. ¿Para qué he de esperar más en Jehová?

He is yet speaking with them, and lo, the messenger is coming down unto him, and he saith, `Lo, this the evil from Jehovah: what -- do I wait for Jehovah any more?'
