1 U n día, algunos de los profetas le dijeron a Eliseo: «Mira, el lugar en que vivimos contigo ya nos resulta muy estrecho.

And sons of the prophet say unto Elisha, `Lo, we pray thee, the place where we are dwelling before thee is too strait for us;

2 V ayamos al río Jordán y tomemos cada uno de nosotros una viga de allí, y levantemos allí mismo un lugar donde podamos vivir.» Eliseo les dijo que fueran,

let us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and we take thence each one beam, and we make for ourselves there a place to dwell there;' and he saith, `Go.'

3 p ero uno de ellos le pidió que los acompañara. Y Eliseo aceptó.

And the one saith, `Be pleased, I pray thee, and go with thy servants;' and he saith, `I -- I go.'

4 Y así, se fue al Jordán con ellos, y cuando llegaron allá cortaron la madera.

And he goeth with them, and they come in to the Jordan, and cut down the trees,

5 P ero sucedió que, mientras uno de ellos derribaba un árbol, el hacha se le cayó al agua; entonces comenzó a gritar: «¡Ay, señor, el hacha era prestada!»

and it cometh to pass, the one is felling the beam, and the iron hath fallen into the water, and he crieth and saith, `Alas! my lord, and it asked!'

6 E l varón de Dios le preguntó: «¿Y dónde cayó?» Cuando aquél le mostró el lugar, Eliseo cortó un palo y lo echó al agua, con lo que hizo que el hacha flotara;

And the man of God saith, `Whither hath it fallen?' and he sheweth him the place, and he cutteth a stick, and casteth thither, and causeth the iron to swim,

7 e ntonces le ordenó que recogiera el hacha, y aquél extendió la mano y la sacó del agua. Eliseo y los sirios

and saith, `Raise to thee;' and he putteth forth his hand and taketh it.

8 E l rey de Siria estaba en guerra contra Israel, así que luego de consultar a sus oficiales dijo: «Voy a instalar mi campamento en cierto lugar.»

And the king of Aram hath been fighting against Israel, and taketh counsel with his servants, saying, `At such and such a place my encamping.'

9 E ntonces el varón de Dios mandó a decir al rey de Israel: «Ten cuidado de no pasar por tal lugar, porque los sirios van a acampar allí.»

And the man of God sendeth unto the king of Israel, saying, `Take heed of passing by this place, for thither are the Aramaeans coming down;

10 E ntonces el rey de Israel envió gente al lugar señalado por el varón de Dios, y éste una y otra vez advirtió al rey que debía tener cuidado.

and the king of Israel sendeth unto the place of which the man of God spake to him, and warned him, and he is preserved there not once nor twice.

11 E l rey de Siria se molestó mucho por esto, así que llamó a sus oficiales y les dijo: «¿No me van a decir quién de ustedes está a favor del rey de Israel?»

And the heart of the king of Aram is tossed about concerning this thing, and he calleth unto his servants, and saith unto them, `Do ye not declare to me who of us for the king of Israel?'

12 U no de sus oficiales dijo: «Ninguno de nosotros lo está. Lo que pasa, mi señor y rey, es que el profeta Eliseo está en Israel, y es él quien va y le cuenta al rey de Israel todo lo que Su Majestad dice, incluso en la intimidad de su alcoba.»

And one of his servants saith, `Nay, my lord, O king, for Elisha the prophet, who in Israel, declareth to the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in the inner part of thy bed-chamber.'

13 E ntonces el rey ordenó: «Pues vayan y averigüen dónde está Eliseo, para que yo mande a que lo aprehendan.» En cuanto le dijeron que Eliseo estaba en Dotán,

And he saith, `Go ye and see where he, and I send and take him;' and it is declared to him, saying, `Lo -- in Dothan.'

14 e l rey mandó allá soldados de caballería, y carros de combate, y un gran ejército, los cuales llegaron de noche y sitiaron la ciudad.

And he sendeth thither horses and chariot, and a heavy force, and they come in by night, and go round against the city.

15 A l día siguiente, por la mañana, el ayudante del varón de Dios salió y se encontró con que el ejército había sitiado la ciudad con su caballería y sus carros de combate. Entonces fue a decirle a Eliseo: «¡Ay, señor mío! ¿Y ahora qué vamos a hacer?»

And the servant of the man of God riseth early, and goeth out, and lo, a force is surrounding the city, and horse and chariot, and his young man saith unto him, `Alas! my lord, how do we do?'

16 Y Eliseo le dijo: «No tengas miedo, que son más los que están con nosotros que los que están con ellos.»

And he saith, `Fear not, for more they who with us than they who with them.'

17 A cto seguido, Eliseo oró con estas palabras: «Señor, te ruego que abras los ojos de mi siervo, para que vea.» El Señor abrió los ojos del criado, y éste miró a su alrededor y vio que en torno a Eliseo el monte estaba lleno de gente de a caballo, y de carros de fuego.

And Elisha prayeth, and saith, `Jehovah, open, I pray Thee, his eyes, and he doth see;' and Jehovah openeth the eyes of the young man, and he seeth, and lo, the hill is full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha.

18 Y cuando los sirios se dispusieron a atacarlo, Eliseo oró así al Señor: «Te ruego que hieras con ceguera a estos paganos.» Y el Señor los dejó ciegos, tal y como Eliseo se lo pidió.

And they come down unto it, and Elisha prayeth unto Jehovah, and saith, `Smite, I pray Thee, this nation with blindness;' and He smiteth them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.

19 L uego, Eliseo les dijo: «Éste no es el camino correcto, ni esta ciudad es la que buscan. Síganme, y yo los llevaré hasta el hombre que buscan.» Y los llevó a Samaria.

And Elisha saith unto them, `This not the way, nor this the city; come after me, and I lead you unto the man whom ye seek;' and he leadeth them to Samaria.

20 Y cuando llegaron allá, Eliseo dijo: «Señor, ábreles los ojos, para que puedan ver.» El Señor les abrió los ojos, y entonces vieron que se hallaban en medio de Samaria.

And it cometh to pass, at their coming in to Samaria, that Elisha saith, `Jehovah, open the eyes of these, and they see;' and Jehovah openeth their eyes, and they see, and lo, in the midst of Samaria!

21 A l verlos, el rey de Israel le preguntó a Eliseo: «¿Debo matarlos, padre mío?»

And the king of Israel saith unto Elisha, at his seeing them, `Do I smite -- do I smite -- my father?'

22 Y Eliseo le dijo: «No, no los mates. ¿Acaso matarías a quienes con tu espada y con tu arco hicieras prisioneros? Más bien, dales pan y agua, y que coman y beban, y se vayan de regreso con sus amos.»

And he saith, `Thou dost not smite; those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow art thou smiting? set bread and water before them, and they eat, and drink, and go unto their lord.'

23 E ntonces el rey les ofreció un gran banquete, y en cuanto terminaron de comer y de beber, los mandó de regreso a su señor. Y nunca más volvieron a merodear en Israel bandas armadas de Siria. Eliseo y el sitio de Samaria

And he prepareth for them great provision, and they eat and drink, and he sendeth them away, and they go unto their lord: and troops of Aram have not added any more to come in to the land of Israel.

24 D espués de esto, sucedió que el rey Ben Adad de Siria reunió a todo su ejército para ponerle sitio a Samaria.

And it cometh to pass afterwards, that Ben-Hadad king of Aram gathereth all his camp, and goeth up, and layeth siege to Samaria,

25 A consecuencia de aquel sitio, hubo entonces mucha hambre en Samaria, al grado de que la cabeza de un asno se vendía en ochenta piezas de plata, y un puñado de «estiércol de paloma» costaba cinco piezas de plata.

and there is a great famine in Samaria, and lo, they are laying siege to it, till the head of an ass is at eighty silverlings, and a forth of the cab of dovesdung at five silverlings.

26 U na mujer, al ver que el rey de Israel pasaba cerca de la muralla, gritó: «Rey y señor mío, ¡sálvanos!»

And it cometh to pass, the king of Israel is passing by on the wall, and a woman hath cried unto him, saying, `Save, my lord, O king.'

27 P ero el rey le contestó: «Si el Señor no te salva, ¿cómo voy a poder salvarte yo? ¿Acaso hay trigo en los graneros, o vino en los lagares?»

And he saith, `Jehovah doth not save thee -- whence do I save thee? out of the threshing-floor, or out of the wine-vat?'

28 S in embargo, el rey añadió: «¿Qué te pasa?» Y ella respondió: «Esta mujer me dijo: “¡Venga acá tu hijo! ¡Vamos a comérnoslo hoy, y mañana nos comeremos el mío!”

And the king saith to her, `What -- to thee?' and she saith, `This woman said unto me, Give thy son, and we eat him to-day, and my son we eat to-morrow;

29 E ntonces cocinamos a mi hijo, y nos lo comimos. Al día siguiente yo le dije: “¡Ahora venga acá tu hijo! ¡Vamos a comérnoslo!” ¡Pero ella lo ha escondido!»

and we boil my son and eat him, and I say unto her on the next day, Give thy son, and we eat him; and she hideth her son.'

30 C uando el rey oyó las palabras de aquella mujer, se rasgó las vestiduras y así pasó por la muralla; entonces el pueblo pudo ver que por dentro traía puesto un cilicio.

And it cometh to pass, at the king's hearing the words of the woman, that he rendeth his garments, and he is passing by on the wall, and the people see, and lo, the sackcloth on his flesh within.

31 Y el rey exclamó: «¡Que Dios me castigue, y más aun, si no le corto hoy mismo la cabeza a Eliseo hijo de Safat!»

And he saith, `Thus doth God do to me, and thus He doth add -- if it remain -- the head of Elisha son of Shaphat -- upon him this day.'

32 E liseo estaba sentado en su casa, en compañía de los ancianos, cuando el rey envió a él un emisario. Pero antes de que el emisario llegara, Eliseo les dijo a los ancianos: «¿Ya vieron cómo este asesino ha mandado a un hombre a cortarme la cabeza? Fíjense bien, y cuando llegue su emisario, cierren la puerta y no lo dejen entrar. ¡Tras ese hombre se oyen los pasos de su amo!»

And Elisha is sitting in his house, and the elders are sitting with him, and sendeth a man from before him; before the messenger doth come unto him, even he himself said unto the elders, `Have ye seen that this son of the murderer hath sent to turn aside my head? see, at the coming in of the messenger, shut the door, and ye have held him fast at the door, is not the sound of the feet of his lord behind him?'

33 A ún estaba Eliseo hablando con los ancianos cuando llegó el emisario del rey y dijo: «Esta calamidad es de parte del Señor. ¿Qué más puedo esperar de él?»

He is yet speaking with them, and lo, the messenger is coming down unto him, and he saith, `Lo, this the evil from Jehovah: what -- do I wait for Jehovah any more?'
