1 A l pasar, Jesús vio a un hombre que era ciego de nacimiento.

And passing by, he saw a man blind from birth,

2 S us discípulos le preguntaron: «Rabí, ¿quién pecó, para que éste haya nacido ciego? ¿Él, o sus padres?»

and his disciples asked him, saying, `Rabbi, who did sin, this one or his parents, that he should be born blind?'

3 J esús respondió: «No pecó él, ni tampoco sus padres. Más bien, fue para que las obras de Dios se manifiesten en él.

Jesus answered, `Neither did this one sin nor his parents, but that the works of God may be manifested in him;

4 M ientras sea de día, nos es necesario hacer las obras del que me envió; viene la noche, cuando nadie puede trabajar.

it behoveth me to be working the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night doth come, when no one is able to work: --

5 M ientras que estoy en el mundo, soy la luz del mundo.»

when I am in the world, I am a light of the world.'

6 D icho esto, escupió en tierra, hizo lodo con la saliva, y untó el lodo en los ojos del ciego;

These things saying, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and rubbed the clay on the eyes of the blind man, and said to him,

7 e ntonces le dijo: «Ve a lavarte en el estanque de Siloé (que significa “Enviado”).» El ciego fue, se lavó, y al volver ya veía.

`Go away, wash at the pool of Siloam,' which is, interpreted, Sent. He went away, therefore, and did wash, and came seeing;

8 E ntonces los vecinos, y los que antes habían visto que era ciego, decían: «¿No es éste el que se sentaba a mendigar?»

the neighbours, therefore, and those seeing him before, that he was blind, said, `Is not this he who is sitting and begging?'

9 U nos decían: «Sí, es él»; otros decían: «Se le parece»; pero él decía: «Yo soy».

others said -- `This is he;' and others -- `He is like to him;' he himself said, -- `I am.'

10 Y le dijeron: «¿Y cómo es que se te han abierto los ojos?»

They said, therefore, to him, `How were thine eyes opened?'

11 É l les respondió: «Aquel hombre que se llama Jesús hizo lodo, me lo untó en los ojos, y me dijo: “Ve a Siloé, y lávate.” Y yo fui, me lavé, y recibí la vista.»

he answered and said, `A man called Jesus made clay, and rubbed my eyes, and said to me, Go away to the pool of Siloam, and wash; and having gone away and having washed, I received sight;'

12 E llos le dijeron: «¿Y dónde está él?» Él dijo: «No lo sé.» Los fariseos interrogan al ciego sanado

they said, therefore, to him, `Where is that one?' he saith, `I have not known.'

13 E l que había sido ciego fue llevado ante los fariseos.

They bring him to the Pharisees who once blind,

14 C uando Jesús hizo lodo y le abrió los ojos al ciego era día de reposo.

and it was a sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

15 T ambién los fariseos volvieron a preguntarle cómo había recibido la vista. Y él les dijo: «Me puso lodo en los ojos, y yo me lavé, y ahora veo.»

Again, therefore, the Pharisees also were asking him how he received sight, and he said to them, `Clay he did put upon my eyes, and I did wash -- and I see.'

16 A lgunos de los fariseos decían: «Ese hombre no procede de Dios, porque no guarda el día de reposo.» Y otros decían: «¿Cómo puede un pecador hacer estas señales?» Y había disensión entre ellos.

Of the Pharisees, therefore, certain said, `This man is not from God, because the sabbath he doth not keep;' others said, `How is a man -- a sinful one -- able to do such signs?' and there was a division among them.

17 E ntonces volvieron a preguntarle al ciego: «¿Tú qué opinas del que te abrió los ojos?» Y él respondió: «Creo que es un profeta.»

They said to the blind man again, `Thou -- what dost thou say of him -- that he opened thine eyes?'

18 P ero los judíos no creían que aquel hombre había sido ciego y que había recibido la vista, hasta que llamaron a los padres del que había recibido la vista

and he said -- `He is a prophet.' The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him that he was blind and did receive sight, till that they called the parents of him who received sight,

19 y les preguntaron: «¿Es éste el hijo de ustedes, de quien ustedes dicen que nació ciego? ¿Cómo es que ahora ve?»

and they asked them, saying, `Is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind? how then now doth he see?'

20 S us padres les respondieron: «Sabemos que éste es nuestro hijo, y que nació ciego;

His parents answered them and said, `We have known that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

21 l o que no sabemos es cómo es que ahora ve, y tampoco sabemos quién le abrió los ojos. Pero pregúntenle a él, que ya es mayor de edad y puede hablar por sí mismo.»

and how he now seeth, we have not known; or who opened his eyes, we have not known; himself is of age, ask him; he himself shall speak concerning himself.'

22 S us padres dijeron esto porque tenían miedo de los judíos, pues éstos ya habían acordado expulsar de la sinagoga a quien confesara que Jesús era el Mesías.

These things said his parents, because they were afraid of the Jews, for already had the Jews agreed together, that if any one may confess him -- Christ, he may be put out of the synagogue;

23 P or eso dijeron sus padres: «Ya es mayor de edad; pregúntenle a él.»

because of this his parents said -- `He is of age, ask him.'

24 E ntonces volvieron a llamar al que había sido ciego, y le dijeron: «Da gloria a Dios. Nosotros sabemos que ese hombre es pecador.»

They called, therefore, a second time the man who was blind, and they said to him, `Give glory to God, we have known that this man is a sinner;'

25 P ero él respondió: «Si es pecador, no lo sé; lo que sí sé, es que yo era ciego y ahora veo.»

he answered, therefore, and said, `If he be a sinner -- I have not known, one thing I have known, that, being blind, now I see.'

26 V olvieron a decirle: «¿Pero qué te hizo? ¿Cómo te abrió los ojos?»

And they said to him again, `What did he to thee? how did he open thine eyes?'

27 É l les respondió: «Ya se lo he dicho, y ustedes no escuchan. ¿Por qué quieren oírlo otra vez? ¿También ustedes quieren hacerse discípulos suyos?»

He answered them, `I told you already, and ye did not hear; why again do ye wish to hear? do ye also wish to become his disciples?'

28 E llos lo insultaron, y le dijeron: «¡Discípulo suyo lo serás tú! ¡Nosotros somos discípulos de Moisés!

They reviled him, therefore, and said, `Thou art his disciple, and we are Moses' disciples;

29 N osotros sabemos que Dios le habló a Moisés; pero de ése, no sabemos ni de dónde es.»

we have known that God hath spoken to Moses, but this one -- we have not known whence he is.'

30 E l hombre les dijo: «Pues esto es lo asombroso, que ustedes no sepan de dónde es, pero a mí me abrió los ojos.

The man answered and said to them, `Why, in this is a wonderful thing, that ye have not known whence he is, and he opened my eyes!

31 Y sabemos que Dios no escucha a los pecadores, pero que si alguno es temeroso de Dios y hace su voluntad, a ése sí lo escucha.

and we have known that God doth not hear sinners, but, if any one may be a worshipper of God, and may do His will, him He doth hear;

32 N unca se ha oído decir que alguien le abriera los ojos a un ciego de nacimiento.

from the age it was not heard, that any one did open eyes of one who hath been born blind;

33 S i éste no viniera de Dios, nada podría hacer.»

if this one were not from God, he were not able to do anything.'

34 E llos le dijeron: «Tú naciste del todo en pecado, ¿y nos vas a enseñar?» Y lo expulsaron de allí. Ceguera espiritual

They answered and said to him, `In sins thou wast born altogether, and thou dost teach us!' and they cast him forth without.

35 J esús supo que lo habían expulsado, así que cuando lo halló le dijo: «¿Crees tú en el Hijo de Dios?»

Jesus heard that they cast him forth without, and having found him, he said to him, `Dost thou believe in the Son of God?'

36 É l le respondió: «Señor, ¿y quién es, para que crea en él?»

he answered and said, `Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?'

37 J esús le dijo: «Pues ya lo has visto, y es el que habla contigo.»

And Jesus said to him, `Thou hast both seen him, and he who is speaking with thee is he;'

38 Y él dijo: «Creo, Señor.» Y lo adoró.

and he said, `I believe, sir,' and bowed before him.

39 J esús dijo: «Yo he venido a este mundo para juicio; para que vean los que no ven, y para que los que ven se queden ciegos.»

And Jesus said, `For judgment I to this world did come, that those not seeing may see, and those seeing may become blind.'

40 A l oír esto, algunos de los fariseos que estaban con él le preguntaron: «¿Acaso también nosotros somos ciegos?»

And those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, `Are we also blind?'

41 J esús les respondió: «Si ustedes fueran ciegos, no tendrían pecado; pero ahora, como dicen que ven, su pecado permanece.»

Jesus said to them, `If ye were blind, ye were not having had sin, but now ye say -- We see, therefore doth your sin remain.
