1 E l Señor le respondió a Job desde el torbellino:

And Jehovah answereth Job out of the whirlwind, and saith: --

2 « ¿Quién se atreve a oscurecer mis designios con palabras carentes de sentido?

Who this -- darkening counsel, By words without knowledge?

3 P órtate como hombre, y prepárate; yo te voy a preguntar, y tú me vas a responder.

Gird, I pray thee, as a man, thy loins, And I ask thee, and cause thou Me to know.

4 » ¿Dónde estabas tú, cuando yo afirmé la tierra? Si en verdad sabes mucho, dímelo.

Where wast thou when I founded earth? Declare, if thou hast known understanding.

5 D ime también, si lo sabes, ¿quién tomó sus medidas? ¿O quién la midió palmo a palmo?

Who placed its measures -- if thou knowest? Or who hath stretched out upon it a line?

6 ¿ Sobre qué están sentadas sus bases? ¿Quién puso su piedra angular

On what have its sockets been sunk? Or who hath cast its corner-stone?

7 m ientras cantaban las estrellas del alba y los seres celestiales se regocijaban?

In the singing together of stars of morning, And all sons of God shout for joy,

8 » Cuando las aguas del mar se desbordaban, ¿quién les puso compuertas para controlarlas?

And He shutteth up with doors the sea, In its coming forth, from the womb it goeth out.

9 C uando yo cubrí el mar de nubes blancas, y lo envolví en una densa oscuridad,

In My making a cloud its clothing, And thick darkness its swaddling band,

10 e stablecí para el mar este decreto que ponía límite a sus movimientos:

And I measure over it My statute, And place bar and doors,

11 “ Podrás llegar hasta aquí, pero no más allá. Hasta aquí llegarán tus orgullosas olas.”

And say, `Hitherto come thou, and add not, And a command is placed On the pride of thy billows.'

12 » ¿Alguna vez le has dado órdenes a la mañana? ¿Le has señalado al alba cuál es su lugar,

Hast thou commanded morning since thy days? Causest thou the dawn to know its place?

13 p ara que tome los extremos de la tierra y se sacuda de encima a los malvados?

To take hold on the skirts of the earth, And the wicked are shaken out of it,

14 C on el alba, la tierra cambia de aspecto y se reviste con tonos de lacre para sello;

It turneth itself as clay of a seal And they station themselves as clothed.

15 p ero si se les quita su luz a los malvados, éstos pierden su fuerza y son vencidos.

And withheld from the wicked is their light, And the arm lifted up is broken.

16 » ¿Has bajado alguna vez al fondo del mar? ¿Has recorrido los senderos del abismo?

Hast thou come in to springs of the sea? And in searching the deep Hast thou walked up and down?

17 ¿ Se te han revelado las puertas de la muerte? ¿Has visto el umbral del reino de las sombras?

Revealed to thee were the gates of death? And the gates of death-shade dost thou see?

18 ¿ Has calculado la extensión de la tierra? ¡Hazme saber si sabes todo esto!

Thou hast understanding, Even unto the broad places of earth! Declare -- if thou hast known it all.

19 » ¿Sabes cómo llegar a la casa de la luz? ¿O en qué lugar se resguardan las tinieblas?

Where this -- the way light dwelleth? And darkness, where this -- its place?

20 ¡ Entonces puedes guiarlas hasta sus fronteras y mostrarles la senda que conduce a su casa!

That thou dost take it unto its boundary, And that thou dost understand The paths of its house.

21 ¡ Claro que lo sabes, pues ya habías nacido! ¡Son muchos los años que has vivido!

Thou hast known -- for then thou art born And the number of thy days many!

22 » ¿Has entrado en los depósitos de la nieve? ¿Has visto dónde está almacenado el granizo?

Hast thou come in unto the treasure of snow? Yea, the treasures of hail dost thou see?

23 Y o los guardo para momentos angustiosos, para los días de combate y de batalla.

That I have kept back for a time of distress, For a day of conflict and battle.

24 ¿ De qué manera se difunde la luz? ¿Cómo se esparce el viento solano sobre la tierra?

Where this, the way light is apportioned? It scattereth an east wind over the earth.

25 » ¿Quién le abrió el camino al aluvión, y con él a los truenos y relámpagos

Who hath divided for the flood a conduit? And a way for the lightning of the voices?

26 q ue descargan su furia en los páramos y en desiertos que nadie habita?

To cause to rain on a land -- no man, A wilderness -- no man in it.

27 C on la lluvia sacia su sed el desierto, y brota en el desierto la tierna hierba.

To satisfy a desolate and waste place, And to cause to shoot up The produce of the tender grass?

28 » ¿Quién es el padre de la lluvia? ¿Quién da origen a las gotas de rocío?

Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

29 ¿ Del vientre de qué madre sale el hielo? ¿Quién da origen a la escarcha?

From whose belly came forth the ice? And the hoar-frost of the heavens, Who hath begotten it?

30 ¿ Cómo es que el agua se endurece como piedra, y la superficie del mar profundo se congela?

As a stone waters are hidden, And the face of the deep is captured.

31 » ¿Puedes atar los lazos de las Pléyades, o desatar las ataduras de Orión?

Dost thou bind sweet influences of Kimah? Or the attractions of Kesil dost thou open?

32 ¿ Puedes sacar las constelaciones a su tiempo, o guiar a la Osa Mayor y a sus cachorros?

Dost thou bring out Mazzaroth in its season? And Aysh for her sons dost thou comfort?

33 ¿ Conoces acaso las leyes de los cielos? ¿Puedes controlar su potestad en la tierra?

Hast thou known the statutes of heaven? Or dost thou appoint Its dominion in the earth?

34 » ¿Puedes dar órdenes a las nubes, y hacer que te cubra un torrente de lluvia?

Dost thou lift up to the cloud thy voice, And abundance of water doth cover thee?

35 ¿ Puedes marcar la ruta de los relámpagos, y hacer que ellos se pongan a tus órdenes?

Dost thou send out lightnings, and they go And say unto thee, `Behold us?'

36 » ¿Quién le dio sabiduría al ibis? ¿Quién le dio inteligencia al gallo?

Who hath put in the inward parts wisdom? Or who hath given To the covered part understanding?

37 ¿ Quién con tanta sabiduría cuenta las nubes? ¿Y quién derrama las aguas de los cielos

Who doth number the clouds by wisdom? And the bottles of the heavens, Who doth cause to lie down,

38 p ara reblandecer los duros terrones cuando éstos se pegan por falta de humedad?

In the hardening of dust into hardness, And clods cleave together?

39 » ¿Te atreverías a cazar la presa para el león? ¿Te atreverías a saciar el hambre de sus cachorros,

Dost thou hunt for a lion prey? And the desire of young lions fulfil?

40 q ue tendidos en sus cuevas esperan impacientes la hora de comer?

When they bow down in dens -- Abide in a thicket for a covert?

41 ¿ Quién alimenta al cuervo y sus polluelos, cuando éstos saltan de un lado a otro y graznan hambrientos pidiendo a Dios su comida?

Who doth prepare for a raven his provision, When his young ones cry unto God? They wander without food.
