1 U nd der HERR antwortete Hiob aus dem Wetter und sprach:

And Jehovah answereth Job out of the whirlwind, and saith: --

2 W er ist der, der den Ratschluß verdunkelt mit Worten ohne Verstand?

Who this -- darkening counsel, By words without knowledge?

3 G ürte deine Lenden wie ein Mann; ich will dich fragen, lehre mich!

Gird, I pray thee, as a man, thy loins, And I ask thee, and cause thou Me to know.

4 W o warst du, da ich die Erde gründete? Sage an, bist du so klug!

Where wast thou when I founded earth? Declare, if thou hast known understanding.

5 W eißt du, wer ihr das Maß gesetzt hat oder wer über sie eine Richtschnur gezogen hat?

Who placed its measures -- if thou knowest? Or who hath stretched out upon it a line?

6 W orauf stehen ihre Füße versenkt, oder wer hat ihren Eckstein gelegt,

On what have its sockets been sunk? Or who hath cast its corner-stone?

7 d a mich die Morgensterne miteinander lobten und jauchzten alle Kinder Gottes?

In the singing together of stars of morning, And all sons of God shout for joy,

8 W er hat das Meer mit Türen verschlossen, da es herausbrach wie aus Mutterleib,

And He shutteth up with doors the sea, In its coming forth, from the womb it goeth out.

9 d a ich's mit Wolken kleidete und in Dunkel einwickelte wie in Windeln,

In My making a cloud its clothing, And thick darkness its swaddling band,

10 d a ich ihm den Lauf brach mit meinem Damm und setzte ihm Riegel und Türen

And I measure over it My statute, And place bar and doors,

11 u nd sprach: "Bis hierher sollst du kommen und nicht weiter; hier sollen sich legen deine stolzen Wellen!"?

And say, `Hitherto come thou, and add not, And a command is placed On the pride of thy billows.'

12 H ast du bei deiner Zeit dem Morgen geboten und der Morgenröte ihren Ort gezeigt,

Hast thou commanded morning since thy days? Causest thou the dawn to know its place?

13 d aß sie die Ecken der Erde fasse und die Gottlosen herausgeschüttelt werden?

To take hold on the skirts of the earth, And the wicked are shaken out of it,

14 S ie wandelt sich wie Ton unter dem Siegel, und alles steht da wie im Kleide.

It turneth itself as clay of a seal And they station themselves as clothed.

15 U nd den Gottlosen wird ihr Licht genommen, und der Arm der Hoffärtigen wird zerbrochen.

And withheld from the wicked is their light, And the arm lifted up is broken.

16 B ist du in den Grund des Meeres gekommen und in den Fußtapfen der Tiefe gewandelt?

Hast thou come in to springs of the sea? And in searching the deep Hast thou walked up and down?

17 H aben sich dir des Todes Tore je aufgetan, oder hast du gesehen die Tore der Finsternis?

Revealed to thee were the gates of death? And the gates of death-shade dost thou see?

18 H ast du vernommen wie breit die Erde sei? Sage an, weißt du solches alles!

Thou hast understanding, Even unto the broad places of earth! Declare -- if thou hast known it all.

19 W elches ist der Weg, da das Licht wohnt, und welches ist der Finsternis Stätte,

Where this -- the way light dwelleth? And darkness, where this -- its place?

20 d aß du mögest ergründen seine Grenze und merken den Pfad zu seinem Hause?

That thou dost take it unto its boundary, And that thou dost understand The paths of its house.

21 D u weißt es ja; denn zu der Zeit wurdest du geboren, und deiner Tage sind viel.

Thou hast known -- for then thou art born And the number of thy days many!

22 B ist du gewesen, da der Schnee her kommt, oder hast du gesehen, wo der Hagel her kommt,

Hast thou come in unto the treasure of snow? Yea, the treasures of hail dost thou see?

23 d ie ich habe aufbehalten bis auf die Zeit der Trübsal und auf den Tag des Streites und Krieges?

That I have kept back for a time of distress, For a day of conflict and battle.

24 D urch welchen Weg teilt sich das Licht und fährt der Ostwind hin über die Erde?

Where this, the way light is apportioned? It scattereth an east wind over the earth.

25 W er hat dem Platzregen seinen Lauf ausgeteilt und den Weg dem Blitz und dem Donner

Who hath divided for the flood a conduit? And a way for the lightning of the voices?

26 u nd läßt regnen aufs Land da niemand ist, in der Wüste, da kein Mensch ist,

To cause to rain on a land -- no man, A wilderness -- no man in it.

27 d aß er füllt die Einöde und Wildnis und macht das Gras wächst?

To satisfy a desolate and waste place, And to cause to shoot up The produce of the tender grass?

28 W er ist des Regens Vater? Wer hat die Tropfen des Taues gezeugt?

Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

29 A us wes Leib ist das Eis gegangen, und wer hat den Reif unter dem Himmel gezeugt,

From whose belly came forth the ice? And the hoar-frost of the heavens, Who hath begotten it?

30 d aß das Wasser verborgen wird wie unter Steinen und die Tiefe oben gefriert?

As a stone waters are hidden, And the face of the deep is captured.

31 K annst du die Bande der sieben Sterne zusammenbinden oder das Band des Orion auflösen?

Dost thou bind sweet influences of Kimah? Or the attractions of Kesil dost thou open?

32 K annst du den Morgenstern hervorbringen zu seiner Zeit oder den Bären am Himmel samt seinen Jungen heraufführen?

Dost thou bring out Mazzaroth in its season? And Aysh for her sons dost thou comfort?

33 W eißt du des Himmels Ordnungen, oder bestimmst du seine Herrschaft über die Erde?

Hast thou known the statutes of heaven? Or dost thou appoint Its dominion in the earth?

34 K annst du deine Stimme zu der Wolke erheben, daß dich die Menge des Wassers bedecke?

Dost thou lift up to the cloud thy voice, And abundance of water doth cover thee?

35 K annst du die Blitze auslassen, daß sie hinfahren und sprechen zu dir: Hier sind wir?

Dost thou send out lightnings, and they go And say unto thee, `Behold us?'

36 W er gibt die Weisheit in das Verborgene? Wer gibt verständige Gedanken?

Who hath put in the inward parts wisdom? Or who hath given To the covered part understanding?

37 W er ist so weise, der die Wolken zählen könnte? Wer kann die Wasserschläuche am Himmel ausschütten,

Who doth number the clouds by wisdom? And the bottles of the heavens, Who doth cause to lie down,

38 w enn der Staub begossen wird, daß er zuhauf läuft und die Schollen aneinander kleben?

In the hardening of dust into hardness, And clods cleave together?

39 K annst du der Löwin ihren Raub zu jagen geben und die jungen Löwen sättigen,

Dost thou hunt for a lion prey? And the desire of young lions fulfil?

40 w enn sie sich legen in ihre Stätten und ruhen in der Höhle, da sie lauern?

When they bow down in dens -- Abide in a thicket for a covert?

41 W er bereitet den Raben die Speise, wenn seine Jungen zu Gott rufen und fliegen irre, weil sie nicht zu essen haben?

Who doth prepare for a raven his provision, When his young ones cry unto God? They wander without food.
