1 U nd es begab sich im vierzehnten Jahr des Königs Hiskia, zog der König von Assyrien, Sanherib, herauf wider alle festen Städte Juda's und gewann sie.

And it cometh to pass, in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, come up hath Sennacherib king of Asshur against all the fenced cities of Judah, and seizeth them.

2 U nd der König von Assyrien sandte den Erzschenken von Lachis gen Jerusalem zu dem König Hiskia mit großer Macht. Und er trat an die Wasserleitung des oberen Teichs, am Wege bei dem Acker des Walkmüllers.

And the king of Asshur sendeth Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem, unto the king Hezekiah, with a heavy force, and he standeth by the conduit of the upper pool, in the highway of the fuller's field,

3 U nd es ging zu ihm heraus Eljakim, der Sohn Hilkias, der Hofmeister, und Sebna, der Schreiber, und Joah, der Sohn Asaphs, der Kanzler.

and go forth unto him doth Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer.

4 U nd der Erzschenke sprach zu ihnen: Sagt doch dem Hiskia: So spricht der große König, der König von Assyrien: Was ist das für ein Trotz, darauf du dich verlässest?

And Rabshakeh saith unto them, `Say ye, I pray you, unto Hezekiah, `Thus said the great king, the king of Asshur, What this confidence in which thou hast confided?

5 I ch achte, du lässest dich bereden, daß du noch Rat und Macht weißt, zu streiten. Auf wen verläßt du dich denn, daß du mir bist abfällig geworden?

I have said: Only, a word of the lips! counsel and might for battle: now, on whom hast thou trusted, that thou hast rebelled against me?

6 V erläßt du dich auf den zerbrochenen Rohrstab Ägypten, welcher, so jemand sich darauf lehnt, geht er ihm in die Hand und durchbohrt sie? Also tut Pharao, der König von Ägypten, allen, die sich auf ihn verlassen.

`Lo, thou hast trusted on the staff of this broken reed -- on Egypt -- which a man leaneth on, and it hath gone into his hand, and pierced it -- so Pharaoh king of Egypt to all those trusting on him.

7 W illst du mir aber sagen: Wir verlassen uns auf den HERRN, unsern Gott! ist's nicht der, dessen Höhen und Altäre Hiskia hat abgetan und hat zu Juda und Jerusalem gesagt: Vor diesem Altar sollt ihr anbeten?

`And dost thou say unto me, Unto Jehovah our God we have trusted? is it not He, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath turned aside, and saith to Judah and to Jerusalem, Before this altar ye do bow yourselves?

8 W ohlan, so nimm's an mit meinem Herrn, dem König von Assyrien: ich will dir zweitausend Rosse geben; laß sehen, ob du bei dir könntest ausrichten, die darauf reiten.

`And now, negotiate, I pray thee, with my lord the king of Asshur, and I give to thee two thousand horses, if thou art able to put for thee riders on them.

9 W ie willst du denn bleiben vor einem Hauptmann, der geringsten Diener einem meines Herrn? Und du verlässest dich auf Ägypten um der Wagen und Reiter willen.

And how dost thou turn back the face of one captain of the least of the servants of my lord, and dost trust for thee on Egypt, for chariot and for horsemen?

10 D azu, meinst du, daß ich ohne den HERRN bin heraufgezogen in dies Land, es zu verderben? Ja, der HERR sprach zu mir: Zieh hinauf in dies Land und verderbe es!

And now, without Jehovah have I come up against this land to destroy it? Jehovah said unto me, Go up unto this land, and thou hast destroyed it.'

11 A ber Eljakim und Sebna und Joah sprachen zum Erzschenken: Rede doch mit deinen Knechten auf syrisch, denn wir verstehen es wohl, und rede nicht auf jüdisch mit uns vor den Ohren des Volkes, das auf der Mauer ist.

And Eliakim saith -- and Shebna and Joah -- unto Rabshakeh, `Speak, we pray thee, unto thy servants Aramaean, for we are understanding; and do not speak unto us Jewish, in the ears of the people who on the wall.'

12 D a sprach der Erzschenke: Meinst du, daß mein Herr mich zu deinem Herrn oder zu dir gesandt habe, solche Worte zu reden, und nicht vielmehr zu den Männern, die auf der Mauer sitzen, daß sie samt euch ihren eigenen Mist fressen und ihren Harn saufen?

And Rabshakeh saith, `Unto thy lord, and unto thee, hath my lord sent me to speak these words? is it not for the men -- those sitting on the wall to eat their own dung and to drink their own water with you?'

13 U nd der Erzschenke stand und rief laut auf jüdisch und sprach: Höret die Worte des großen Königs, des Königs von Assyrien!

And Rabshakeh standeth and calleth with a great voice Jewish, and saith, `Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Asshur:

14 S o spricht der König: Laßt euch Hiskia nicht betrügen; denn er kann euch nicht erretten.

Thus said the king, Let not Hezekiah lift you up, for he is not able to deliver you;

15 U nd laß euch Hiskia nicht vertrösten auf den HERRN, daß er sagt: Der HERR wird uns erretten, und diese Stadt wird nicht in die Hand des Königs von Assyrien gegeben werden.

and let not Hezekiah make you trust unto Jehovah, saying, Jehovah doth certainly deliver us, this city is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.

16 G ehorchet Hiskia nicht! Denn so spricht der König von Assyrien: Tut mir zu Dank und geht zu mir heraus, so sollt ihr ein jeglicher von seinem Feigenbaum essen und aus seinem Brunnen trinken,

`Do not hearken unto Hezekiah, for thus said the king of Asshur, Make ye with me a blessing, and come out unto me, and eat ye each of his vine, and each of his fig-tree, and drink ye each the waters of his own well,

17 b is daß ich komme und hole euch in ein Land, wie euer Land ist, ein Land, darin Korn und Most ist, ein Land, darin Brot und Weinberge sind.

till my coming in, and I have taken you unto a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards;

18 L aßt euch Hiskia nicht bereden, daß er sagt: Der HERR wird uns erlösen. Haben auch der Heiden Götter ein jeglicher sein Land errettet von der Hand des Königs von Assyrien?

lest Hezekiah doth persuade you, saying, Jehovah doth deliver us. `Have the gods of the nations delivered each his land out of the hand of the king of Asshur?

19 W o sind die Götter zu Hamath und Arpad? Wo sind die Götter Sepharvaims? Haben sie auch Samaria errettet von meiner Hand?

Where the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where the gods of Sepharvaim, that they have delivered Samaria out of my hand?

20 W elcher unter allen Göttern dieser Lande hat sein Land errettet von meiner Hand, daß der HERR sollte Jerusalem erretten von meiner Hand?

Who among all the gods of these lands they who have delivered their land out of my hand, that Jehovah doth deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'

21 S ie schwiegen aber still und antworteten ihm nichts; denn der König hatte geboten und gesagt: Antwortet ihm nichts.

And they keep silent, and have not answered him a word, for a command of the king is, saying, `Do not answer him.'

22 D a kamen Eljakim, der Sohn Hilkias, der Hofmeister, und Sebna, der Schreiber, und Joah, der Sohn Asaphs, der Kanzler, mit zerrissenen Kleidern zu Hiskia und zeigten ihm an die Worte des Erzschenken.

And Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who over the house, cometh in, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer, unto Hezekiah with rent garments, and they declare to him the words of Rabshakeh.
