1 U nd es begab sich an einem Sabbat, daß er durchs Getreide ging; und seine Jünger rauften Ähren aus und aßen und rieben sie mit den Händen.

And it came to pass, on the second-first sabbath, as he is going through the corn fields, that his disciples were plucking the ears, and were eating, rubbing with the hands,

2 E tliche aber der Pharisäer sprachen zu ihnen: Warum tut ihr, was sich nicht ziemt zu tun an den Sabbaten?

and certain of the Pharisees said to them, `Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbaths?'

3 U nd Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Habt ihr nicht das gelesen, was David tat, da ihn hungerte und die mit ihm waren?

And Jesus answering said unto them, `Did ye not read even this that David did, when he hungered, himself and those who are with him,

4 w ie er zum Hause Gottes einging und nahm die Schaubrote und aß und gab auch denen, die mit ihm waren; die doch niemand durfte essen als die Priester allein?

how he went into the house of God, and the loaves of the presentation did take, and did eat, and gave also to those with him, which it is not lawful to eat, except only to the priests?'

5 U nd er sprach zu ihnen: Des Menschen Sohn ist ein HERR auch des Sabbats.

and he said to them, -- `The Son of Man is lord also of the sabbath.'

6 E s geschah aber an einem andern Sabbat, daß er ging in die Schule und lehrte. Und da war ein Mensch, des rechte Hand war verdorrt.

And it came to pass also, on another sabbath, that he goeth into the synagogue, and teacheth, and there was there a man, and his right hand was withered,

7 A ber die Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer lauerten darauf, ob er auch heilen würde am Sabbat, auf daß sie eine Sache wider ihn fänden.

and the scribes and the Pharisees were watching him, if on the sabbath he will heal, that they might find an accusation against him.

8 E r aber merkte ihre Gedanken und sprach zu dem Menschen mit der dürren Hand: Stehe auf und tritt hervor! Und er stand auf und trat dahin.

And he himself had known their reasonings, and said to the man having the withered hand, `Rise, and stand in the midst;' and he having risen, stood.

9 D a sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Ich frage euch: Was ziemt sich zu tun an den Sabbaten, Gutes oder Böses? das Leben erhalten oder verderben?

Then said Jesus unto them, `I will question you something: Is it lawful on the sabbaths to do good, or to do evil? life to save or to kill?'

10 U nd er sah sie alle umher an und sprach zu dem Menschen: Strecke deine Hand aus! und er tat's; da ward ihm seine Hand wieder zurechtgebracht, gesund wie die andere.

And having looked round on them all, he said to the man, `Stretch forth thy hand;' and he did so, and his hand was restored whole as the other;

11 S ie aber wurden ganz unsinnig und beredeten sich miteinander, was sie ihm tun wollten.

and they were filled with madness, and were speaking with one another what they might do to Jesus.

12 E s begab sich aber zu der Zeit, daß er ging auf einen Berg zu beten; und er blieb über Nacht in dem Gebet zu Gott.

And it came to pass in those days, he went forth to the mountain to pray, and was passing the night in the prayer of God,

13 U nd da es Tag ward, rief er seine Jünger und erwählte ihrer zwölf, welche er auch Apostel nannte:

and when it became day, he called near his disciples, and having chosen from them twelve, whom also he named apostles,

14 S imon, welchen er Petrus nannte, und Andreas, seinen Bruder, Jakobus und Johannes, Philippus und Bartholomäus,

(Simon, whom also he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

15 M atthäus und Thomas, Jakobus, des Alphäus Sohn, Simon genannt Zelotes,

Matthew and Thomas, James of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,

16 J udas, des Jakobus Sohn und Judas Ischariot, den Verräter.

Judas of James, and Judas Iscariot, who also became betrayer;)

17 U nd er ging hernieder mit ihnen und trat auf einen Platz im Felde und der Haufe seiner Jünger und eine große Menge des Volks von allem jüdischen Lande und Jerusalem und Tyrus und Sidon, am Meer gelegen,

and having come down with them, he stood upon a level spot, and a crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea, and Jerusalem, and the maritime Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their sicknesses,

18 d ie da gekommen waren, ihn zu hören und daß sie geheilt würden von ihren Seuchen; und die von unsauberen Geistern umgetrieben wurden, die wurden gesund.

and those harassed by unclean spirits, and they were healed,

19 U nd alles Volk begehrte ihn anzurühren; denn es ging Kraft von ihm und er heilte sie alle.

and all the multitude were seeking to touch him, because power from him was going forth, and he was healing all.

20 U nd er hob seine Augen auf über seine Jünger und sprach: Selig seid ihr Armen; denn das Reich Gottes ist euer.

And he, having lifted up his eyes to his disciples, said: `Happy the poor -- because yours is the reign of God.

21 S elig seid ihr, die ihr hier hungert; denn ihr sollt satt werden. Selig seid ihr, die ihr hier weint; denn ihr werdet lachen.

`Happy those hungering now -- because ye shall be filled. `Happy those weeping now -- because ye shall laugh.

22 S elig seid ihr, so euch die Menschen hassen und euch absondern und schelten euch und verwerfen euren Namen als einen bösen um des Menschensohns willen.

`Happy are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you, and shall reproach, and shall cast forth your name as evil, for the Son of Man's sake --

23 F reut euch alsdann und hupfet; denn siehe, euer Lohn ist groß im Himmel. Desgleichen taten ihre Väter den Propheten auch.

rejoice in that day, and leap, for lo, your reward great in the heaven, for according to these things were their fathers doing to the prophets.

24 A ber dagegen weh euch Reichen! denn ihr habt euren Trost dahin.

`But wo to you -- the rich, because ye have got your comfort.

25 W eh euch, die ihr voll seid! denn euch wird hungern. Weh euch, die ihr hier lachet! denn ihr werdet weinen und heulen.

`Wo to you who have been filled -- because ye shall hunger. `Wo to you who are laughing now -- because ye shall mourn and weep.

26 W eh euch, wenn euch jedermann wohlredet! Desgleichen taten eure Väter den falschen Propheten auch.

`Wo to you when all men shall speak well of you -- for according to these things were their fathers doing to false prophets.

27 A ber ich sage euch, die ihr zuhört: Liebet eure Feinde; tut denen wohl, die euch hassen;

`But I say to you who are hearing, Love your enemies, do good to those hating you,

28 s egnet die, so euch verfluchen und bittet für die, so euch beleidigen.

bless those cursing you, and pray for those accusing you falsely;

29 U nd wer dich schlägt auf einen Backen, dem biete den anderen auch dar; und wer dir den Mantel nimmt, dem wehre nicht auch den Rock.

and to him smiting thee upon the cheek, give also the other, and from him taking away from thee the mantle, also the coat thou mayest not keep back.

30 W er dich bittet, dem gib; und wer dir das deine nimmt, da fordere es nicht wieder.

`And to every one who is asking of thee, be giving; and from him who is taking away thy goods, be not asking again;

31 U nd wie ihr wollt, daß euch die Leute tun sollen, also tut ihnen gleich auch ihr.

and as ye wish that men may do to you, do ye also to them in like manner;

32 U nd so ihr liebet, die euch lieben, was für Dank habt ihr davon? Denn die Sünder lieben auch ihre Liebhaber.

and -- if ye love those loving you, what grace have ye? for also the sinful love those loving them;

33 U nd wenn ihr euren Wohltätern wohltut, was für Dank habt ihr davon? Denn die Sünder tun das auch.

and if ye do good to those doing good to you, what grace have ye? for also the sinful do the same;

34 U nd wenn ihr leihet, von denen ihr hoffet zu nehmen, was für Dank habt ihr davon? Denn die Sünder leihen den Sündern auch, auf daß sie Gleiches wiedernehmen.

and if ye lend of whom ye hope to receive back, what grace have ye? for also the sinful lend to sinners -- that they may receive again as much.

35 V ielmehr liebet eure Feinde; tut wohl und leihet, daß ihr nichts dafür hoffet, so wird euer Lohn groß sein, und ihr werdet Kinder des Allerhöchsten sein; denn er ist gütig über die Undankbaren und Bösen.

`But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again, and your reward will be great, and ye shall be sons of the Highest, because He is kind unto the ungracious and evil;

36 D arum seid barmherzig, wie auch euer Vater barmherzig ist.

be ye therefore merciful, as also your Father is merciful.

37 R ichtet nicht, so werdet ihr auch nicht gerichtet. Verdammet nicht, so werdet ihr nicht verdammt. Vergebet, so wird euch vergeben.

`And judge not, and ye may not be judged; condemn not, and ye may not be condemned; release, and ye shall be released.

38 G ebt, so wird euch gegeben. Ein voll, gedrückt, gerüttelt und überfließend Maß wird man in euren Schoß geben; denn eben mit dem Maß, mit dem ihr messet, wird man euch wieder messen.

`Give, and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed, and shaken, and running over, they shall give into your bosom; for with that measure with which ye measure, it shall be measured to you again.'

39 U nd er sagte ihnen ein Gleichnis: Kann auch ein Blinder einem Blinden den Weg weisen? Werden sie nicht alle beide in die Grube fallen?

And he spake a simile to them, `Is blind able to lead blind? shall they not both fall into a pit?

40 D er Jünger ist nicht über seinen Meister; wenn der Jünger ist wie sein Meister, so ist er vollkommen.

A disciple is not above his teacher, but every one perfected shall be as his teacher.

41 W as siehst du aber einen Splitter in deines Bruders Auge, und des Balkens in deinem Auge wirst du nicht gewahr?

`And why dost thou behold the mote that is in thy brother's eye, and the beam that in thine own eye dost not consider?

42 O der wie kannst du sagen zu deinem Bruder: Halt stille, Bruder, ich will den Splitter aus deinem Auge ziehen, und du siehst selbst nicht den Balken in deinem Auge? Du Heuchler, zieh zuvor den Balken aus deinem Auge und siehe dann zu, daß du den Splitter aus deines Bruders Auge ziehest!

or how art thou able to say to thy brother, Brother, suffer, I may take out the mote that in thine eye -- thyself the beam in thine own eye not beholding? Hypocrite, take first the beam out of thine own eye, and then thou shalt see clearly to take out the mote that in thy brother's eye.

43 D enn es ist kein guter Baum, der faule Frucht trage, und kein fauler Baum, der gute Frucht trage.

`For there is not a good tree making bad fruit, nor a bad tree making good fruit;

44 E in jeglicher Baum wird an seiner eigenen Frucht erkannt. Denn man liest nicht Feigen von den Dornen, auch liest man nicht Trauben von den Hecken.

for each tree from its own fruit is known, for not from thorns do they gather figs, nor from a bramble do they crop a grape.

45 E in guter Mensch bringt Gutes hervor aus dem guten Schatz seines Herzens; und ein böser Mensch bringt Böses hervor aus dem bösen Schatz seines Herzens. Denn wes das Herz voll ist, des geht der Mund über.

`The good man out of the good treasure of his heart doth bring forth that which good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart doth bring forth that which evil; for out of the abounding of the heart doth his mouth speak.

46 W as heißet ihr mich aber HERR, HERR, und tut nicht, was ich euch sage?

`And why do ye call me, Lord, Lord, and do not what I say?

47 W er zu mir kommt und hört meine Rede und tut sie, den will ich euch zeigen, wem er gleich ist.

Every one who is coming unto me, and is hearing my words, and is doing them, I will shew you to whom he is like;

48 E r ist gleich einem Menschen, der ein Haus baute und grub tief und legte den Grund auf den Fels. Da aber Gewässer kam, da riß der Strom zum Hause zu, und konnte es nicht bewegen; denn es war auf den Fels gegründet.

he is like to a man building a house, who did dig, and deepen, and laid a foundation upon the rock, and a flood having come, the stream broke forth on that house, and was not able to shake it, for it had been founded upon the rock.

49 W er aber hört und nicht tut, der ist gleich einem Menschen, der ein Haus baute auf die Erde ohne Grund; und der Strom riß zu ihm zu, und es fiel alsbald, und das Haus gewann einen großen Riß.

`And he who heard and did not, is like to a man having builded a house upon the earth, without a foundation, against which the stream brake forth, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house became great.'
