1 D a nun der HERR inneward, daß vor die Pharisäer gekommen war, wie Jesus mehr Jünger machte und taufte denn Johannes

When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus more disciples doth make and baptize than John,

2 ( wiewohl Jesus selber nicht taufte, sondern seine Jünger),

(though indeed Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples,)

3 v erließ er das Land Judäa und zog wieder nach Galiläa.

he left Judea and went away again to Galilee,

4 E r mußte aber durch Samaria reisen.

and it was behoving him to go through Samaria.

5 D a kam er in eine Stadt Samarias, die heißt Sichar, nahe bei dem Feld, das Jakob seinem Sohn Joseph gab.

He cometh, therefore, to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the place that Jacob gave to Joseph his son;

6 E s war aber daselbst Jakobs Brunnen. Da nun Jesus müde war von der Reise, setzte er sich also auf den Brunnen; und es war um die sechste Stunde.

and there was there a well of Jacob. Jesus therefore having been weary from the journeying, was sitting thus on the well; it was as it were the sixth hour;

7 D a kommt ein Weib aus Samaria, Wasser zu schöpfen. Jesus spricht zu ihr: Gib mir zu trinken!

there cometh a woman out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, `Give me to drink;'

8 ( Denn seine Jünger waren in die Stadt gegangen, daß sie Speise kauften.)

for his disciples were gone away to the city, that they may buy victuals;

9 S pricht nun das samaritische Weib zu ihm: Wie bittest du von mir zu trinken, so du ein Jude bist, und ich ein samaritisch Weib? (Denn die Juden haben keine Gemeinschaft mit den Samaritern.)

the Samaritan woman therefore saith to him, `How dost thou, being a Jew, ask drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?' for Jews have no dealing with Samaritans.

10 J esus antwortete und sprach zu ihr: Wenn du erkenntest die Gabe Gottes und wer der ist, der zu dir sagt: "Gib mir zu trinken!", du bätest ihn, und er gäbe dir lebendiges Wasser.

Jesus answered and said to her, `If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.'

11 S pricht zu ihm das Weib: HERR, hast du doch nichts, womit du schöpfest, und der Brunnen ist tief; woher hast du denn lebendiges Wasser?

The woman saith to him, `Sir, thou hast not even a vessel to draw with, and the well is deep; whence, then, hast thou the living water?

12 B ist du mehr denn unser Vater Jakob, der uns diesen Brunnen gegeben hat? Und er hat daraus getrunken und seine Kinder und sein Vieh.

Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who did give us the well, and himself out of it did drink, and his sons, and his cattle?'

13 J esus antwortete und sprach zu ihr: Wer von diesem Wasser trinkt, den wir wieder dürsten;

Jesus answered and said to her, `Every one who is drinking of this water shall thirst again;

14 w er aber von dem Wasser trinken wird, das ich ihm gebe, den wird ewiglich nicht dürsten; sondern das Wasser, das ich ihm geben werde, das wird in ihm ein Brunnen des Wassers werden, das in das ewige Leben quillt.

but whoever may drink of the water that I will give him, may not thirst -- to the age; and the water that I will give him shall become in him a well of water, springing up to life age-during.'

15 S pricht das Weib zu ihm: HERR, gib mir dieses Wasser, auf daß mich nicht dürste und ich nicht herkommen müsse, zu schöpfen!

The woman saith unto him, `Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.'

16 J esus spricht zu ihr: Gehe hin, rufe deinen Mann und komm her!

Jesus saith to her, `Go, call thy husband, and come hither;'

17 D as Weib antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ich habe keinen Mann. Jesus spricht zu ihr: Du hast recht gesagt: Ich habe keinen Mann.

the woman answered and said, `I have not a husband.' Jesus saith to her, `Well didst thou say -- A husband I have not;

18 F ünf Männer hast du gehabt, und den du nun hast, der ist nicht dein Mann; da hast du recht gesagt.

for five husbands thou hast had, and, now, he whom thou hast is not thy husband; this hast thou said truly.'

19 D as Weib spricht zu ihm: HERR, ich sehe, daß du ein Prophet bist.

The woman saith to him, `Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet;

20 U nsere Väter haben auf diesem Berge angebetet, und ihr sagt, zu Jerusalem sei die Stätte, da man anbeten solle.

our fathers in this mountain did worship, and ye -- ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where it behoveth to worship.'

21 J esus spricht zu ihr: Weib, glaube mir, es kommt die Zeit, daß ihr weder auf diesem Berge noch zu Jerusalem werdet den Vater anbeten.

Jesus saith to her, `Woman, believe me, that there doth come an hour, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father;

22 I hr wisset nicht, was ihr anbetet; wir wissen aber, was wir anbeten, denn das Heil kommt von den Juden.

ye worship what ye have not known; we worship what we have known, because the salvation is of the Jews;

23 A ber es kommt die Zeit und ist schon jetzt, daß die wahrhaftigen Anbeter werden den Vater anbeten im Geist und in der Wahrheit; denn der Vater will haben, die ihn also anbeten.

but, there cometh an hour, and it now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also doth seek such to worship him;

24 G ott ist Geist, und die ihn anbeten, die müssen ihn im Geist und in der Wahrheit anbeten.

God a Spirit, and those worshipping Him, in spirit and truth it doth behove to worship.'

25 S pricht das Weib zu ihm: Ich weiß, daß der Messias kommt, der da Christus heißt. Wenn derselbe kommen wird, so wird er's uns alles verkündigen.

The woman saith to him, `I have known that Messiah doth come, who is called Christ, when that one may come, he will tell us all things;'

26 J esus spricht zu ihr: Ich bin's, der mit dir redet.

Jesus saith to her, `I am, who am speaking to thee.'

27 U nd über dem kamen seine Jünger, und es nahm sie wunder, daß er mit dem Weib redete. Doch sprach niemand: Was fragst du? oder: Was redest du mit ihr?

And upon this came his disciples, and were wondering that with a woman he was speaking, no one, however, said, `What seekest thou?' or `Why speakest thou with her?'

28 D a ließ das Weib ihren Krug stehen und ging hin in die Stadt und spricht zu den Leuten:

The woman then left her water-jug, and went away to the city, and saith to the men,

29 K ommt, seht einen Menschen, der mir gesagt hat alles, was ich getan habe, ob er nicht Christus sei!

`Come, see a man, who told me all things -- as many as I did; is this the Christ?'

30 D a gingen sie aus der Stadt und kamen zu ihm.

They went forth therefore out of the city, and were coming unto him.

31 I ndes aber ermahnten ihn die Jünger und sprachen: Rabbi, iß!

And in the meanwhile his disciples were asking him, saying, `Rabbi, eat;'

32 E r aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich habe eine Speise zu essen, von der ihr nicht wisset.

and he said to them, `I have food to eat that ye have not known.'

33 D a sprachen die Jünger untereinander: Hat ihm jemand zu essen gebracht?

The disciples then said one to another, `Did any one bring him anything to eat?'

34 J esus spricht zu ihnen: Meine Speise ist die, daß ich tue den Willen des, der mich gesandt hat, und vollende sein Werk.

Jesus saith to them, `My food is, that I may do the will of Him who sent me, and may finish His work;

35 S aget ihr nicht: Es sind noch vier Monate, so kommt die Ernte? Siehe, ich sage euch: Hebet eure Augen auf und sehet in das Feld; denn es ist schon weiß zur Ernte.

do not say that it is yet four months, and the harvest cometh; lo, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and see the fields, that they are white unto harvest already.

36 U nd wer da schneidet, der empfängt Lohn und sammelt Frucht zum ewigen Leben, auf daß sich miteinander freuen, der da sät und der da schneidet.

`And he who is reaping doth receive a reward, and doth gather fruit to life age-during, that both he who is sowing and he who is reaping may rejoice together;

37 D enn hier ist der Spruch wahr: Dieser sät, der andere schneidet.

for in this the saying is the true one, that one is the sower and another the reaper.

38 I ch habe euch gesandt, zu schneiden, was ihr nicht gearbeitet habt; andere haben gearbeitet und ihr seid in ihre Arbeit gekommen.

I sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others laboured, and ye into their labour have entered.

39 E s glaubten aber an ihn viele der Samariter aus der Stadt um des Weibes Rede willen, welches da zeugte: Er hat mir gesagt alles, was ich getan habe.

And from that city many believed in him, of the Samaritans, because of the word of the woman testifying, -- `He told me all things -- as many as I did.'

40 A ls nun die Samariter zu ihm kamen, baten sie ihn, daß er bei ihnen bliebe; und er blieb zwei Tage da.

When, then, the Samaritans came unto him, they were asking him to remain with them, and he remained there two days;

41 U nd viel mehr glaubten um seines Wortes willen

and many more did believe because of his word,

42 u nd sprachen zum Weibe: Wir glauben nun hinfort nicht um deiner Rede willen; wir haben selber gehört und erkannt, daß dieser ist wahrlich Christus, der Welt Heiland.

and said to the woman -- `No more because of thy speaking do we believe; for we ourselves have heard and known that this is truly the Saviour of the world -- the Christ.'

43 A ber nach zwei Tagen zog er aus von dannen und zog nach Galiläa.

And after the two days he went forth thence, and went away to Galilee,

44 D enn er selber, Jesus, zeugte, daß ein Prophet daheim nichts gilt.

for Jesus himself testified that a prophet in his own country shall not have honour;

45 D a er nun nach Galiläa kam, nahmen ihn die Galiläer auf, die gesehen hatten alles, was er zu Jerusalem auf dem Fest getan hatte; denn sie waren auch zum Fest gekommen.

when then, he came to Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all things that he did in Jerusalem in the feast -- for they also went to the feast.

46 U nd Jesus kam abermals gen Kana in Galiläa, da er das Wasser hatte zu Wein gemacht.

Jesus came, therefore, again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine, and there was a certain courtier, whose son was ailing in Capernaum,

47 U nd es war ein Königischer, des Sohn lag krank zu Kapernaum. Dieser hörte, daß Jesus kam aus Judäa nach Galiläa, und ging hin zu ihm und bat ihn, daß er hinabkäme und hülfe seinem Sohn; denn er war todkrank.

he, having heard that Jesus is come out of Judea to Galilee, went away unto him, and was asking him that he may come down and may heal his son, for he was about to die.

48 U nd Jesus sprach zu ihm: Wenn ihr nicht Zeichen und Wunder seht, so glaubet ihr nicht.

Jesus then said unto him, `If signs and wonders ye may not see, ye will not believe.'

49 D er Königische sprach zu ihm: HERR, komm hinab, ehe denn mein Kind stirbt!

The courtier saith unto him, `Sir, come down before my child die;'

50 J esus spricht zu ihm: Gehe hin, dein Sohn lebt! der Mensch glaubte dem Wort, das Jesus zu ihm sagte, und ging hin.

Jesus saith to him, `Be going on; thy son doth live.' And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and was going on,

51 U nd indem er hinabging, begegneten ihm seine Knechte, verkündigten ihm und sprachen: Dein Kind lebt.

and he now going down, his servants met him, and told, saying -- `Thy child doth live;'

52 D a forschte er von ihnen die Stunde, in welcher es besser mit ihm geworden war. Und sie sprachen zu ihm: Gestern um die siebente Stunde verließ ihn das Fieber.

he inquired then of them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him -- `Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him;'

53 D a merkte der Vater, daß es um die Stunde wäre, in welcher Jesus zu ihm gesagt hatte: Dein Sohn lebt. Und er glaubte mit seinem ganzen Hause.

then the father knew that in that hour in which Jesus said to him -- `Thy son doth live,' and he himself believed, and his whole house;

54 D as ist nun das andere Zeichen, das Jesus tat, da er aus Judäa nach Galiläa kam.

this again a second sign did Jesus, having come out of Judea to Galilee.
