1 U nd es begab sich an der Tage einem, da er das Volk lehrte im Tempel und predigte das Evangelium, da traten zu ihm die Hohenpriester und Schriftgelehrten mit den Ältesten

And it came to pass, on one of those days, as he is teaching the people in the temple, and proclaiming good news, the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders, came upon,

2 u nd sagten zu ihm und sprachen: Sage uns, aus was für Macht tust du das? oder wer hat dir die Macht gegeben?

and spake unto him, saying, `Tell us by what authority thou dost these things? or who is he that gave to thee this authority?'

3 E r aber antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Ich will euch auch ein Wort fragen; saget mir's:

And he answering said unto them, `I will question you -- I also -- one thing, and tell me:

4 D ie Taufe des Johannes, war sie vom Himmel oder von Menschen?

the baptism of John, from heaven was it, or from men?'

5 S ie aber gedachten bei sich selbst und sprachen: Sagen wir: Vom Himmel, so wird er sagen: Warum habt ihr ihm denn nicht geglaubt?

And they reasoned with themselves, saying -- `If we may say, From heaven, he will say, Wherefore, then, did ye not believe him?

6 S agen wir aber: Von Menschen, so wird uns das Volk steinigen; denn sie stehen darauf, daß Johannes ein Prophet sei.

and if we may say, From men, all the people will stone us, for they are having been persuaded John to be a prophet.'

7 U nd sie antworteten, sie wüßten's nicht, wo sie her wäre.

And they answered, that they knew not whence,

8 U nd Jesus sprach zu ihnen: So sage ich euch auch nicht, aus was für Macht ich das tue.

and Jesus said to them, `Neither do I say to you by what authority I do these things.'

9 E r fing aber an, zu sagen dem Volk dies Gleichnis: Ein Mensch pflanzte einen Weinberg und tat ihn den Weingärtnern aus und zog über Land eine gute Zeit.

And he began to speak unto the people this simile: `A certain man planted a vineyard, and gave it out to husbandmen, and went abroad for a long time,

10 U nd zu seiner Zeit sandte er einen Knecht zu den Weingärtnern, daß sie ihm gäben von der Frucht des Weinberges. Aber die Weingärtner stäupten ihn und ließen ihn leer von sich.

and at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that from the fruit of the vineyard they may give to him, but the husbandmen having beat him, did send away empty.

11 U nd über das sandte er noch einen anderen Knecht; sie aber stäupten den auch und höhnten ihn und ließen ihn leer von sich.

`And he added to send another servant, and they that one also having beaten and dishonoured, did send away empty;

12 U nd über das sandte er den dritten; sie aber verwundeten den auch und stießen ihn hinaus.

and he added to send a third, and this one also, having wounded, they did cast out.

13 D a sprach der Herr des Weinberges: Was soll ich tun? Ich will meinen lieben Sohn senden; vielleicht, wenn sie den sehen, werden sie sich scheuen.

`And the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son -- the beloved, perhaps having seen this one, they will do reverence;

14 D a aber die Weingärtner den Sohn sahen, dachten sie bei sich selbst und sprachen: Das ist der Erbe; kommt, laßt uns ihn töten, daß das Erbe unser sei!

and having seen him, the husbandmen reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, we may kill him, that the inheritance may become ours;

15 U nd sie stießen ihn hinaus vor den Weinberg und töteten ihn. Was wird nun der Herr des Weinberges ihnen tun?

and having cast him outside of the vineyard, they killed; what, then, shall the owner of the vineyard do to them?

16 E r wird kommen und diese Weingärtner umbringen und seinen Weinberg andern austun. Da sie das hörten, sprachen sie: Das sei ferne!

He will come, and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others.' And having heard, they said, `Let it not be!'

17 E r aber sah sie an und sprach: Was ist denn das, was geschrieben steht: "Der Stein, den die Bauleute verworfen haben, ist zum Eckstein geworden"?

and he, having looked upon them, said, `What, then, is this that hath been written: A stone that the builders rejected -- this became head of a corner?

18 W er auf diesen Stein fällt, der wird zerschellen; auf wen aber er fällt, den wird er zermalmen.

every one who hath fallen on that stone shall be broken, and on whom it may fall, it will crush him to pieces.'

19 U nd die Hohenpriester und Schriftgelehrten trachteten darnach, wie sie die Hände an ihn legten zu derselben Stunde; und fürchteten sich vor dem Volk, denn sie verstanden, daß er auf sie dies Gleichnis gesagt hatte.

And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him in that hour, and they feared the people, for they knew that against them he spake this simile.

20 U nd sie stellten ihm nach und sandten Laurer aus, die sich stellen sollten, als wären sie fromm, auf daß sie ihn in der Rede fingen, damit sie ihn überantworten könnten der Obrigkeit und Gewalt des Landpflegers.

And, having watched, they sent forth liers in wait, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his word, to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor,

21 U nd sie fragten ihn und sprachen: Meister, wir wissen, daß du aufrichtig redest und lehrest und achtest keines Menschen Ansehen, sondern du lehrest den Weg Gottes recht.

and they questioned him, saying, `Teacher, we have known that thou dost say and teach rightly, and dost not accept a person, but in truth the way of God dost teach;

22 I st's recht, daß wir dem Kaiser den Schoß geben, oder nicht?

Is it lawful to us to give tribute to Caesar or not?'

23 E r aber merkte ihre List und sprach zu ihnen: Was versuchet ihr mich?

And he, having perceived their craftiness, said unto them, `Why me do ye tempt?

24 Z eiget mir den Groschen! Wes Bild und Überschrift hat er? Sie antworteten und sprachen: Des Kaisers.

shew me a denary; of whom hath it an image and superscription?' and they answering said, `Of Caesar:'

25 E r aber sprach: So gebet dem Kaiser, was des Kaisers ist, und Gott, was Gottes ist!

and he said to them, `Give back, therefore, the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;'

26 U nd sie konnten sein Wort nicht tadeln vor dem Volk und verwunderten sich seiner Antwort und schwiegen still.

and they were not able to take hold on his saying before the people, and having wondered at his answer, they were silent.

27 D a traten zu ihm etliche der Sadduzäer, welche da halten, es sei kein Auferstehen, und fragten ihn

And certain of the Sadducees, who are denying that there is a rising again, having come near, questioned him,

28 u nd sprachen: Meister, Mose hat uns geschrieben: So jemandes Bruder stirbt, der ein Weib hat, und stirbt kinderlos, so soll sein Bruder das Weib nehmen und seinem Bruder einen Samen erwecken.

saying, `Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother may die, having a wife, and he may die childless -- that his brother may take the wife, and may raise up seed to his brother.

29 N un waren sieben Brüder. Der erste nahm ein Weib und starb kinderlos.

`There were, then, seven brothers, and the first having taken a wife, died childless,

30 U nd der andere nahm das Weib und starb auch kinderlos.

and the second took the wife, and he died childless,

31 U nd der dritte nahm sie. Desgleichen alle sieben und hinterließen keine Kinder und starben.

and the third took her, and in like manner also the seven -- they left not children, and they died;

32 Z uletzt nach allen starb auch das Weib.

and last of all died also the woman:

33 N un in der Auferstehung, wes Weib wird sie sein unter denen? Denn alle sieben haben sie zum Weibe gehabt.

in the rising again, then, of which of them doth she become wife? -- for the seven had her as wife.'

34 U nd Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Die Kinder dieser Welt freien und lassen sich freien;

And Jesus answering said to them, `The sons of this age do marry and are given in marriage,

35 w elche aber würdig sein werden, jene Welt zu erlangen und die Auferstehung von den Toten, die werden weder freien noch sich freien lassen.

but those accounted worthy to obtain that age, and the rising again that is out of the dead, neither marry, nor are they given in marriage;

36 D enn sie können hinfort nicht sterben; denn sie sind den Engeln gleich und Gottes Kinder, dieweil sie Kinder sind der Auferstehung.

for neither are they able to die any more -- for they are like messengers -- and they are sons of God, being sons of the rising again.

37 D aß aber die Toten auferstehen, hat auch Mose gedeutet bei dem Busch, da er den HERRN heißt Gott Abrahams und Gott Isaaks und Gott Jakobs.

`And that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the Bush, since he doth call the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;

38 G ott aber ist nicht der Toten, sondern der Lebendigen Gott; denn sie leben ihm alle.

and He is not a God of dead men, but of living, for all live to Him.'

39 D a antworteten etliche der Schriftgelehrten und sprachen: Meister, du hast recht gesagt.

And certain of the scribes answering said, `Teacher, thou didst say well;'

40 U nd sie wagten ihn fürder nichts mehr zu fragen.

and no more durst they question him anything.

41 E r sprach aber zu ihnen: Wie sagen sie, Christus sei Davids Sohn?

And he said unto them, `How do they say the Christ to be son of David,

42 U nd er selbst, David, spricht im Psalmbuch: "Der HERR hat gesagt zu meinem HERRN: Setze dich zu meiner Rechten,

and David himself saith in the Book of Psalms, The Lord said to my lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

43 b is daß ich lege deine Feinde zum Schemel deiner Füße."

till I shall make thine enemies thy footstool;

44 D avid nennt ihn einen HERRN; wie ist er denn sein Sohn?

David, then, doth call him lord, and how is he his son?'

45 D a aber alles Volk zuhörte, sprach er zu seinen Jüngern:

And, all the people hearing, he said to his disciples,

46 H ütet euch vor den Schriftgelehrten, die da wollen einhertreten in langen Kleidern und lassen sich gerne grüßen auf dem Markte und sitzen gern obenan in den Schulen und über Tisch;

`Take heed of the scribes, who are wishing to walk in long robes, and are loving salutations in the markets, and first seats in the synagogues, and first couches in the suppers,

47 s ie fressen der Witwen Häuser und wenden lange Gebete vor. Die werden desto schwerere Verdammnis empfangen.

who devour the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, these shall receive more abundant judgment.'
