1 U nd des HERRN Wort geschah zu mir und sprach:

`And there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying:

2 W as treibt ihr unter euch im Lande Israel dies Sprichwort und sprecht: "Die Väter haben Herlinge gegessen, aber den Kindern sind die Zähne davon stumpf geworden"?

`What -- to you, ye -- using this simile Concerning the ground of Israel, saying: Fathers do eat unripe fruit, And the sons' teeth are blunted?

3 S o wahr als ich lebe, spricht der HERR HERR, solches Sprichwort soll nicht mehr unter euch gehen in Israel.

I live -- an affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, Ye have no more the use of this simile in Israel.

4 D enn siehe, alle Seelen sind mein; des Vaters Seele ist sowohl mein als des Sohnes Seele. Welche Seele sündigt, die soll sterben.

Lo, all the souls are Mine, As the soul of the father, So also the soul of the son -- they are Mine, The soul that is sinning -- it doth die.

5 W enn nun einer fromm ist, der recht und wohl tut,

And a man, when he is righteous, And hath done judgment and righteousness,

6 d er auf den Bergen nicht isset, der seine Augen nicht aufhebt zu den Götzen des Hauses Israel und seines Nächsten Weib nicht befleckt und liegt nicht bei der Frau in ihrer Krankheit,

On the mountains he hath not eaten, And his eyes he hath not lifted up Unto idols of the house of Israel, And the wife of his neighbour defiled not, And to a separated woman cometh not near,

7 d er niemand beschädigt, der dem Schuldner sein Pfand wiedergibt, der niemand etwas mit Gewalt nimmt, der dem Hungrigen sein Brot mitteilt und den Nackten kleidet,

A man -- he doth not oppress, His pledge to the debtor he doth return, Plunder he doth not take away, His bread to the hungry he doth give, And the naked doth cover with a garment,

8 d er nicht wuchert, der nicht Zins nimmt, der seine Hand vom Unrechten kehrt, der zwischen den Leuten recht urteilt,

In usury he doth not give, and increase taketh not, From perversity he turneth back his hand, True judgment he doth between man and man.

9 d er nach meinen Rechten wandelt und meine Gebote hält, daß er ernstlich darnach tue: das ist ein frommer Mann, der soll das leben haben, spricht der HERR HERR.

In My statutes he doth walk, And My judgments he hath kept -- to deal truly, Righteous he, he surely liveth, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah.

10 W enn er aber einen Sohn zeugt, und derselbe wird ein Mörder, der Blut vergießt oder dieser Stücke eins tut,

And -- he hath begotten a son, A burglar -- a shedder of blood, And he hath made a brother of one of these,

11 u nd der andern Stücke keins tut, sondern auf den Bergen isset und seines Nächsten Weib befleckt,

And he all those hath not done, For even on the mountains he hath eaten, And the wife of his neighbour he hath defiled,

12 d ie Armen und Elenden beschädigt, mit Gewalt etwas nimmt, das Pfand nicht wiedergibt, seine Augen zu den Götzen aufhebt und einen Greuel begeht,

The afflicted and needy he hath oppressed, Plunder he hath taken violently away, A pledge he doth not return, And unto the idols he hath lifted up his eyes, Abomination he hath done!

13 a uf Wucher gibt, Zins nimmt: sollte der Leben? Er soll nicht leben, sondern weil er solche Greuel alle getan hat, soll er des Todes sterben; sein Blut soll auf ihm sein.

In usury he hath given, and increase taken, And he liveth: he doth not live, All these abominations he hath done, He doth surely die, his blood is on him.

14 W o er aber einen Sohn zeugt, der solche Sünden sieht, so sein Vater tut, und sich fürchtet und nicht also tut,

And -- lo, he hath begotten a son, And he seeth all the sins of his father, That he hath done, and he feareth, And doth not do like them,

15 i ßt nicht auf den Bergen, hebt seine Augen nicht auf zu den Götzen des Hauses Israel, befleckt nicht seines Nächsten Weib,

On the mountains he hath not eaten, And his eyes he hath not lifted up Unto idols of the house of Israel, The wife of his neighbour he hath not defiled,

16 b eschädigt niemand, behält das Pfand nicht, nimmt nicht mit Gewalt etwas, teilt sein Brot mit dem Hungrigen und kleidet den Nackten,

A man -- he hath not oppressed, A pledge he hath not bound, And plunder he hath not taken away, His bread to the hungry he hath given, And the naked he covered with a garment,

17 d er seine Hand vom Unrechten kehrt, keinen Wucher noch Zins nimmt, sondern meine Gebote hält und nach meinen Rechten lebt: der soll nicht sterben um seines Vaters Missetat willen, sondern leben.

From the afflicted he hath turned back his hand, Usury and increase he hath not taken, My judgments he hath done, In My statutes he hath walked, He doth not die for the iniquity of his father, He doth surely live.

18 A ber sein Vater, der Gewalt und Unrecht geübt hat und unter seinem Volk getan hat, was nicht taugt, siehe, der soll sterben um seiner Missetat willen.

His father -- because he used oppression, Did violently Plunder a brother, And that which not good did in the midst of his people, And lo, he is dying in his iniquity.

19 S o sprecht ihr: Warum soll denn ein Sohn nicht tragen seines Vaters Missetat? Darum daß er recht und wohl getan und alle meine Rechte gehalten und getan hat, soll er leben.

And ye have said, Wherefore hath not the son, Borne of the iniquity of the father? And -- the son judgment and righteousness hath done, All My statutes he hath kept, And he doeth them, he surely liveth.

20 D enn welche Seele sündigt, die soll sterben. Der Sohn soll nicht tragen die Missetat des Vaters, und der Vater soll nicht tragen die Missetat des Sohnes; sondern des Gerechten Gerechtigkeit soll über ihm sein.

The soul that doth sin -- it doth die. A son doth not bear of the iniquity of the father, And a father doth not bear of the iniquity of the son, The righteousness of the righteous is on him, And the wickedness of the wicked is on him.

21 W o sich aber der Gottlose bekehrt von allen seine Sünden, die er getan hat, und hält alle meine Rechte und tut recht und wohl, so soll er leben und nicht sterben.

And the wicked -- when he turneth back From all his sins that he hath done, And he hath kept all My statutes, And hath done judgment and righteousness, He doth surely live, he doth not die.

22 E s soll aller seiner Übertretung, so er begangen hat, nicht gedacht werden; sondern er soll leben um der Gerechtigkeit willen, die er tut.

All his transgressions that he hath done Are not remembered to him, In his righteousness that he hath done he liveth.

23 M einest du, daß ich Gefallen habe am Tode des Gottlosen, spricht der HERR, und nicht vielmehr, daß er sich bekehre von seinem Wesen und lebe?

Do I at all desire the death of the wicked? An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, Is it not in his turning back from his way -- And he hath lived?

24 U nd wo sich der Gerechte kehrt von seiner Gerechtigkeit und tut Böses und lebt nach all den Greueln, die ein Gottloser tut, sollte der leben? Ja, aller seiner Gerechtigkeit, die er getan hat, soll nicht gedacht werden; sondern in seiner Übertretung und Sünde, die er getan hat, soll er sterben.

And in the turning back of the righteous from his righteousness, And he hath done perversity, According to all the abominations That the wicked hath done, he doth -- thus he liveth, All his righteousnesses that he hath done are not remembered, For his trespass that he hath trespassed, And for his sin that he hath sinned, For them he doth die.

25 D och sprecht ihr: Der HERR handelt nicht recht. So hört nun, ihr vom Hause Israel: Ist's nicht also, daß ich recht habe und ihr unrecht habt?

And ye have said, Not pondered is the way of the Lord. Hear, I pray you, O house of Israel, My way -- is it not pondered? Are not your ways unpondered?

26 D enn wenn der Gerechte sich kehrt von seiner Gerechtigkeit und tut Böses, so muß er sterben; er muß aber um seiner Bosheit willen, die er getan hat, sterben.

In the turning back of the righteous from his righteousness, And he hath done perversity, And he is dying by them, for his perversity That he hath done he dieth.

27 W iederum, wenn der Gottlose kehrt von seiner Ungerechtigkeit, die er getan hat, und tut nun recht und wohl, der wird seine Seele lebendig erhalten.

And in the turning back of the wicked From his wickedness that he hath done, And he doth judgment and righteousness, He his soul doth keep alive.

28 D enn weil er sieht und bekehrt sich von aller Bosheit, die er getan hat, so soll er leben und nicht sterben.

And he seeth and turneth back, From all his transgressions that he hath done, He doth surely live, he doth not die,

29 D och sprechen die vom Hause Israel: Der HERR handelt nicht recht. Sollte ich Unrecht haben? Ihr vom Hause Israel habt unrecht.

And the house of Israel have said, Not pondered is the way of the Lord, My ways -- are they not pondered? O house of Israel -- are not your ways unpondered?

30 D arum will ich euch richten, ihr vom Hause Israel einen jeglichen nach seinem Wesen, spricht der HERR HERR. Darum so bekehrt euch von aller Übertretung, auf daß ihr nicht fallen müsset um der Missetat willen.

Therefore, each according to his ways I judge you, O house of Israel? An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, Turn ye back, yea, turn yourselves back, From all your transgressions, And iniquity is not to you for a stumbling-block,

31 W erfet von euch alle eure Übertretung, damit ihr übertreten habt, und machet euch ein neues Herz und einen neuen Geist. Denn warum willst du sterben, du Haus Israel?

Cast from off you all your transgressions, By which ye have transgressed, And make to you a new heart, and a new spirit, And why do ye die, O house of Israel?

32 D enn ich habe keinen Gefallen am Tode des Sterbenden, spricht der HERR HERR. Darum bekehrt euch, so werdet ihr leben.

For I have no pleasure in the death of the dying, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, And turn ye back and live!
