1 D ies sind die Rechte, die du ihnen sollst vorlegen:

`And these the judgments which thou dost set before them:

2 S o du einen hebräischen Knecht kaufst, der soll dir sechs Jahre dienen; im siebenten Jahr soll er frei ausgehen umsonst.

`When thou buyest a Hebrew servant -- six years he doth serve, and in the seventh he goeth out as a freeman for nought;

3 I st er ohne Weib gekommen, so soll er auch ohne Weib ausgehen; ist er aber mit Weib gekommen, so soll sein Weib mit ihm ausgehen.

if by himself he cometh in, by himself he goeth out; if he owner of a wife, then his wife hath gone out with him;

4 H at ihm aber sein Herr ein Weib gegeben, und er hat Söhne oder Töchter gezeugt, so soll das Weib und die Kinder seines Herrn sein, er aber soll ohne Weib ausgehen.

if his lord give to him a wife, and she hath borne to him sons or daughters -- the wife and her children are her lord's, and he goeth out by himself.

5 S pricht aber der Knecht: Ich habe meinen Herren lieb und mein Weib und Kind, ich will nicht frei werden,

`And if the servant really say: I have loved my lord, my wife, and my sons -- I do not go out free;

6 s o bringe ihn sein Herr vor die "Götter" und halte ihn an die Tür oder den Pfosten und bohre ihm mit einem Pfriem durch sein Ohr, und er sei sein Knecht ewig.

then hath his lord brought him nigh unto God, and hath brought him nigh unto the door, or unto the side-post, and his lord hath bored his ear with an awl, and he hath served him -- to the age.

7 V erkauft jemand sein Tochter zur Magd, so soll sie nicht ausgehen wie die Knechte.

`And when a man selleth his daughter for a handmaid, she doth not go out according to the going out of the men-servants;

8 G efällt sie aber ihrem Herrn nicht und will er sie nicht zur Ehe nehmen, so soll er sie zu lösen geben. Aber unter ein fremdes Volk sie zu verkaufen hat er nicht Macht, weil er sie verschmäht hat.

if evil in the eyes of her lord, so that he hath not betrothed her, then he hath let her be ransomed; to a strange people he hath not power to sell her, in his dealing treacherously with her.

9 V ertraut er sie aber seinem Sohn, so soll er Tochterrecht an ihr tun.

`And if to his son he betroth her, according to the right of daughters he doth to her.

10 G ibt er ihm aber noch eine andere, so soll er an ihrer Nahrung, Kleidung und Eheschuld nichts abbrechen.

`If another he take for him, her food, her covering, and her habitation, he doth not withdraw;

11 T ut er diese drei nicht, so soll sie frei ausgehen ohne Lösegeld.

and if these three he do not to her, then she hath gone out for nought, without money.

12 W er einen Menschen schlägt, daß er stirbt, der soll des Todes sterben.

`He who smiteth a man so that he hath died, is certainly put to death;

13 H at er ihm aber nicht nachgestellt, sondern Gott hat ihn lassen ungefähr in seine Hände fallen, so will ich dir einen Ort bestimmen, dahin er fliehen soll.

as to him who hath not laid wait, and God hath brought to his hand, I have even set for thee a place whither he doth flee.

14 W o aber jemand seinem Nächsten frevelt und ihn mit List erwürgt, so sollst du denselben von meinem Altar nehmen, daß man ihn töte.

`And when a man doth presume against his neighbour to slay him with subtilty, from Mine altar thou dost take him to die.

15 W er Vater und Mutter schlägt, der soll des Todes sterben.

`And he who smiteth his father or his mother is certainly put to death.

16 W er einen Menschen stiehlt, es sei, daß er ihn verkauft oder daß man ihn bei ihm findet, der soll des Todes sterben.

`And he who stealeth a man, and hath sold him, and he hath been found in his hand, is certainly put to death.

17 W er Vater und Mutter flucht, der soll des Todes sterben.

`And he who is reviling his father or his mother is certainly put to death.

18 W enn Männer mit einander hadern und einer schlägt den andern mit einem Stein oder mit einer Faust, daß er nicht stirbt, sondern zu Bette liegt:

`And when men contend, and a man hath smitten his neighbour with a stone, or with the fist, and he die not, but hath fallen on the bed;

19 k ommt er auf, daß er ausgeht an seinem Stabe, so soll, der ihn schlug, unschuldig sein, nur daß er ihm bezahle, was er versäumt hat, und das Arztgeld gebe.

if he rise, and hath gone up and down without on his staff, then hath the smiter been acquitted; only his cessation he giveth, and he is thoroughly healed.

20 W er seinen Knecht oder seine Magd schlägt mit einem Stabe, daß sie sterben unter seinen Händen, der soll darum gestraft werden.

`And when a man smiteth his man-servant or his handmaid, with a rod, and he hath died under his hand -- he is certainly avenged;

21 B leibt er aber einen oder zwei Tage am Leben, so soll er darum nicht gestraft werden; denn es ist sein Geld.

only if he remain a day, or two days, he is not avenged, for he his money.

22 W enn Männer hadern und verletzen ein schwangeres Weib, daß ihr die Frucht abgeht, und ihr kein Schade widerfährt, so soll man ihn um Geld strafen, wieviel des Weibes Mann ihm auflegt, und er soll's geben nach der Schiedsrichter Erkennen.

`And when men strive, and have smitten a pregnant woman, and her children have come out, and there is no mischief, he is certainly fined, as the husband of the woman doth lay upon him, and he hath given through the judges;

23 K ommt ihr aber ein Schade daraus, so soll er lassen Seele um Seele,

and if there is mischief, then thou hast given life for life,

24 A uge um Auge, Zahn um Zahn, Hand um Hand, Fuß um Fuß,

eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

25 B rand um Brand, Wunde um Wunde, Beule um Beule.

burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

26 W enn jemand seinen Knecht oder seine Magd in ein Auge schlägt und verderbt es, der soll sie frei loslassen um das Auge.

`And when a man smiteth the eye of his man-servant, or the eye of his handmaid, and hath destroyed it, as a freeman he doth send him away for his eye;

27 D esgleichen, wenn er seinem Knecht oder seiner Magd einen Zahn ausschlägt, soll er sie frei loslassen um den Zahn.

and if a tooth of his man-servant or a tooth of his handmaid he knock out, as a freeman he doth send him away for his tooth.

28 W enn ein Ochse einen Mann oder ein Weib stößt, daß sie sterben, so soll man den Ochsen steinigen und sein Fleisch nicht essen; so ist der Herr des Ochsen unschuldig.

`And when an ox doth gore man or woman, and they have died, the ox is certainly stoned, and his flesh is not eaten, and the owner of the ox acquitted;

29 I st aber der Ochse zuvor stößig gewesen, und seinem Herrn ist's angesagt, und hat ihn nicht verwahrt, und er tötet darüber einen Mann oder ein Weib, so soll man den Ochsen steinigen, und sein Herr soll sterben.

and if the ox is accustomed to gore heretofore, and it hath been testified to its owner, and he doth not watch it, and it hath put to death a man or woman, the ox is stoned, and its owner also is put to death.

30 W ird man aber ein Lösegeld auf ihn legen, so soll er geben, sein Leben zu lösen, was man ihm auflegt.

`If atonement is laid upon him, then he hath given the ransom of his life, according to all that is laid upon him;

31 D esgleichen soll man mit ihm handeln, wenn er Sohn oder Tochter stößt.

whether it gore a son or gore a daughter, according to this judgment it is done to him.

32 S tößt er aber einen Knecht oder eine Magd, so soll er ihrem Herrn dreißig Silberlinge geben, und den Ochsen soll man steinigen.

`If the ox gore a man-servant or a handmaid, thirty silver shekels he doth give to their lord, and the ox is stoned.

33 S o jemand eine Grube auftut oder gräbt eine Grube und deckt sie nicht zu, und es fällt ein Ochse oder Esel hinein,

`And when a man doth open a pit, or when a man doth dig a pit, and doth not cover it, and an ox or ass hath fallen thither, --

34 s o soll's der Herr der Grube mit Geld dem andern wiederbezahlen; das Aas aber soll sein sein.

the owner of the pit doth repay, money he doth give back to its owner, and the dead is his.

35 W enn jemandes Ochse eines andern Ochsen stößt, daß er stirbt, so sollen sie den lebendigen Ochsen verkaufen und das Geld teilen und das Aas auch teilen.

`And when a man's ox doth smite the ox of his neighbour, and it hath died, then they have sold the living ox, and halved its money, and also the dead one they do halve;

36 I st's aber kund gewesen, daß der Ochse zuvor stößig war, und sein Herr hat ihn nicht verwahrt, so soll er einen Ochsen für den andern vergelten und das Aas haben.

or, it hath been known that the ox is accustomed to gore heretofore, and its owner doth not watch it, he certainly repayeth ox for ox, and the dead is his.
