1 U nd des HERRN Wort geschah zu mir und sprach:

And there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying,

2 D u Menschenkind, predige den Kindern deines Volkes und sprich zu ihnen: Wenn ich ein Schwert über das Land führen würde, und das Volk im Lande nähme einen Mann unter ihnen und machten ihn zu ihrem Wächter,

`Son of man, speak unto the sons of thy people, and thou hast said unto them: A land -- when I bring in against it a sword, And the people of the land have taken one man out of their borders, And made him to them for a watchman.

3 u nd er sähe das Schwert kommen über das Land und bliese die Drommete und warnte das Volk,

And he hath seen the sword coming against the land, And hath blown with a trumpet, and hath warned the people,

4 w er nun der Drommete Hall hörte und wollte sich nicht warnen lassen, und das Schwert käme und nähme ihn weg: desselben Blut sei auf seinem Kopf;

And the hearer hath heard the voice of the trumpet, and he hath not taken warning, And come in doth the sword, and taketh him away, His blood is on his head.

5 d enn er hat der Drommete Hall gehört und hat sich dennoch nicht warnen lassen; darum sei sein Blut auf ihm. Wer sich aber warnen läßt, der wird sein Leben davonbringen.

The voice of the trumpet he heard, And he hath not taken warning, his blood is on him, And he who took warning his soul hath delivered.

6 W o aber der Wächter sähe das Schwert kommen und die Drommete nicht bliese noch sein Volk warnte, und das Schwert käme und nähme etliche weg: dieselben würden wohl um ihrer Sünden willen weggenommen; aber ihr Blut will ich von des Wächters Hand fordern.

And the watchman, when he seeth the sword coming in, And he hath not blown with a trumpet, And the people hath not been warned, And come in doth a sword, And taketh away of them -- a soul, He in his iniquity is taken away, And his blood from the hand of the watchman I require.

7 U nd nun, du Menschenkind, ich habe dich zum Wächter gesetzt über das Haus Israel, wenn du etwas aus meinem Munde hörst, daß du sie von meinetwegen warnen sollst.

And thou, son of man, A watchman I gave thee to the house of Israel, And thou hast heard from My mouth a word, And thou hast warned them from Me.

8 W enn ich nun zu dem Gottlosen sage: Du Gottloser mußt des Todes sterben! und du sagst ihm solches nicht, daß sich der Gottlose warnen lasse vor seinem Wesen, so wird wohl der Gottlose um seines gottlosen Wesens willen sterben; aber sein Blut will ich von deiner Hand fordern.

In My saying to the wicked, O wicked one -- thou dost surely die, And thou hast not spoken to warn the wicked from his way, He -- the wicked -- in his iniquity doth die, And his blood from thy hand I require.

9 W arnst du aber den Gottlosen vor seinem Wesen, daß er sich davon bekehre, und er will sich nicht von seinem Wesen bekehren, so wird er um seiner Sünde sterben, und du hast deine Seele errettet.

And thou, when thou hast warned the wicked of his way, to turn back from it, And he hath not turned back from his way, He in his iniquity doth die, And thou thy soul hast delivered.

10 D arum, du Menschenkind, sage dem Hause Israel: Ihr sprecht also: Unsre Sünden und Missetaten liegen auf uns, daß wir darunter vergehen; wie können wir denn leben?

And thou, son of man, say unto the house of Israel: Rightly ye have spoken, saying: Surely our transgressions and our sins on us, And in them we are wasting away, How, then, do we live?

11 S o sprich zu ihnen: So wahr als ich lebe, spricht der HERR HERR, ich habe keinen Gefallen am Tode des Gottlosen, sondern daß sich der Gottlose bekehre von seinem Wesen und lebe. So bekehret euch doch nun von eurem bösen Wesen. Warum wollt ihr sterben, ihr vom Hause Israel?

Say unto them, I live -- an affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, I delight not in the death of the wicked, But -- in the turning of the wicked from his way, And he hath lived, Turn back, turn back, from your evil ways, Yea, why do ye die, O house of Israel?

12 U nd du, Menschenkind, sprich zu deinem Volk: Wenn ein Gerechter Böses tut, so wird's ihm nicht helfen, daß er fromm gewesen ist; und wenn ein Gottloser fromm wird, so soll's ihm nicht schaden, daß er gottlos gewesen ist. So kann auch der Gerechte nicht leben, wenn er sündigt.

And thou, son of man, say unto the sons of thy people: The righteousness of the righteous doth not deliver him in the day of his transgression, And the wickedness of the wicked, He doth not stumble for it in the day of his turning from his wickedness, And the righteous is not able to live in it in the day of his sinning.

13 D enn wo ich zu dem Gerechten spreche, er soll leben, und er verläßt sich auf seine Gerechtigkeit und tut Böses, so soll aller seiner Frömmigkeit nicht gedacht werden; sondern er soll sterben in seiner Bosheit, die er tut.

In My saying of the righteous: He surely liveth, And -- he hath trusted on his righteousness, And he hath done perversity, All his righteous acts are not remembered, And for his perversity that he hath done, For it he doth die.

14 U nd wenn ich zum Gottlosen spreche, er soll sterben und er bekehrt sich von seiner Sünde und tut, was recht und gut ist,

And in My saying to the wicked: Thou surely diest, And -- he hath turned back from his sin, And hath done judgment and righteousness,

15 a lso daß der Gottlose das Pfand wiedergibt und bezahlt, was er geraubt hat, und nach dem Wort des Lebens wandelt, daß er kein Böses tut: so soll er leben und nicht sterben,

(The pledge the wicked restoreth, plunder he repayeth,) In the statutes of life he hath walked, So as not to do perversity, He surely liveth -- he doth not die.

16 u nd aller seiner Sünden, die er getan hat, soll nicht gedacht werden; denn er tut nun, was recht und gut ist; darum soll er leben.

None of his sin that he hath sinned is remembered to him, Judgment and righteousness he hath done, He doth surely live.

17 A ber dein Volk spricht: Der HERR urteilt nicht recht, so sie doch unrecht haben.

And the sons of thy people have said: The way of the Lord is not pondered, As to them -- their way is not pondered.

18 D enn wo der Gerechte sich kehrt von seiner Gerechtigkeit und tut Böses, so stirbt er ja billig darum.

In the turning back of the righteous from his righteousness, And he hath done perversity -- he dieth for it.

19 U nd wo sich der Gottlose bekehrt von seinem gottlosen Wesen und tut, was recht und gut ist, so soll er ja billig leben.

And in the turning back of the wicked from his wickedness, And he hath done judgment and righteousness, by them he liveth.

20 D och sprecht ihr: Der HERR urteilt nicht recht, so ich doch euch vom Hause Israel einen jeglichen nach seinem Wesen richte.

And ye have said: The way of the Lord is not pondered, Each according to his ways do I judge you, O house of Israel.'

21 U nd es begab sich im zwölften Jahr unserer Gefangenschaft, am fünften Tage des zehnten Monats, kam zu mir ein Entronnener von Jerusalem und sprach: Die Stadt ist geschlagen.

And it cometh to pass, in the twelfth year -- in the tenth, in the fifth of the month -- of our removal, come in unto me doth one who is escaped from Jerusalem, saying, `The city hath been smitten.'

22 U nd die Hand des HERRN war über mir des Abends, ehe der Entronnene kam, und tat mir meinen Mund auf, bis er zu mir kam des Morgens; und tat mir meinen Mund auf, also daß ich nicht mehr schweigen mußte.

And the hand of Jehovah hath been unto me in the evening, before the coming in of the escaped one, and He openeth my mouth till the coming in unto me in the morning, and opened is my mouth, and I have not been silent again.

23 U nd des HERRN Wort geschah zu mir und sprach:

And there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying,

24 D u Menschenkind, die Einwohner dieser Wüsten im Lande Israel sprechen also: Abraham war ein einziger Mann und erbte dies Land; unser aber sind viele, desto billiger gehört das Land uns zu.

`Son of man, the inhabitants of these wastes on the ground of Israel are speaking, saying: Alone hath been Abraham -- and he possesseth the land, and we many -- to us hath the land been given for a possession.

25 D arum sprich zu ihnen: So spricht der HERR HERR: Ihr habt Blutiges gegessen und eure Augen zu den Götzen aufgehoben und Blut vergossen: und ihr meint, ihr wollt das Land besitzen?

Therefore say unto them: Thus said the Lord Jehovah: With the blood ye do eat, And your eyes ye lift up unto your idols, And blood ye shed, and the land ye inherit!

26 J a, ihr fahret immer fort mit Morden und übet Greuel, und einer schändet dem andern sein Weib; und ihr meint, ihr wollt das Land besitzen?

Ye have stood on your sword, Ye have done abomination, Each the wife of his neighbour ye have defiled, And the land ye possess!

27 S o sprich zu ihnen: So spricht der HERR HERR: So wahr ich lebe, sollen alle, so in den Wüsten wohnen, durchs Schwert fallen; und die auf dem Felde sind, will ich den Tieren zu fressen geben; und die in den Festungen und Höhlen sind, sollen an der Pestilenz sterben.

Thus dost thou say unto them: Thus said the Lord Jehovah: I live -- do not they who in the wastes by the sword fall? And they who on the face of the field, To the beast I have given for food, And they who are in strongholds and in caves by pestilence die.

28 D enn ich will das Land ganz verwüsten und seiner Hoffart und Macht ein Ende machen, daß das Gebirge Israel so wüst werde, daß niemand dadurchgehe.

And I have made the land a desolation and an astonishment, And ceased hath the excellency of its strength, And desolated have been mountains of Israel, Without any one passing through.

29 U nd sie sollen erfahren, daß ich der HERR bin, wenn ich das Land ganz verwüstet habe um aller ihrer Greuel willen, die sie üben.

And they have known that I Jehovah, In My making the land a desolation and an astonishment, For all their abominations that they have done.

30 U nd du, Menschenkind, dein Volk redet über dich an den Wänden und unter den Haustüren, und einer spricht zum andern: Kommt doch und laßt uns hören, was der HERR sage!

And thou, son of man, the sons of thy people who are speaking about thee, By the walls, and in openings of the houses, Have spoken one with another, each with his brother, Saying: Come in, I pray you, And hear what the word that cometh out from Jehovah.

31 U nd sie werden zu dir kommen in die Versammlung und vor dir sitzen als mein Volk und werden deine Worte hören, aber nicht darnach tun; sondern sie werden sie gern in ihrem Munde haben, und gleichwohl fortleben in ihrem Geiz.

And they come in unto thee as the coming in of a people, And they sit before thee -- My people, And have heard thy words, and they do them not, For doting loves with their mouth they are making, After their dishonest gain their heart is going.

32 U nd siehe, du mußt ihnen sein wie ein liebliches Liedlein, wie einer, der eine schöne Stimme hat und wohl spielen kann. Also werden sie deine Worte hören und nicht darnach tun.

And lo, thou to them as a singer of doting loves, A pleasant voice, and playing well on an instrument, And they have heard thy words, and they are not doing them.

33 W enn es aber kommt, was kommen soll, siehe, so werden sie erfahren, daß ein Prophet unter ihnen gewesen ist.

And in its coming in -- lo, it hath come, And they have known that a prophet hath been in their midst!'
