1 U nd Rehabeam zog gen Sichem; denn das ganze Israel war gen Sichem gekommen, ihn zum König zu machen.

And Rehoboam goeth to Shechem, for to Shechem hath all Israel come to make him king.

2 U nd Jerobeam, der Sohn Nebats, hörte das, da er noch in Ägypten war, dahin er vor dem König Salomo geflohen war, und blieb in Ägypten.

And it cometh to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat's hearing (and he yet in Egypt where he hath fled from the presence of Solomon the king, and Jeroboam dwelleth in Egypt),

3 U nd sie sandten hin und ließen ihn rufen. Und Jerobeam samt der ganzen Gemeinde Israel kamen und redeten mit Rehabeam und sprachen:

that they send and call for him; and they come -- Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel -- and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,

4 D ein Vater hat unser Joch zu hart gemacht; so mache du nun den harten Dienst und das schwere Joch leichter, das er uns aufgelegt hat, so wollen wir dir untertänig sein.

`Thy father made hard our yoke, and thou, now, make light of the hard service of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.'

5 E r aber sprach zu ihnen: Gehet hin bis an den dritten Tag, dann kommt wieder zu mir. Und das Volk ging hin.

And he saith unto them, `Go -- yet three days, and come back unto me;' and the people go.

6 U nd der König Rehabeam hielt einen Rat mit den Ältesten, die vor seinem Vater Salomo standen, da er lebte, und sprach: Wie ratet ihr, daß wir diesem Volk eine Antwort geben?

And king Rehoboam consulteth with the elders who have been standing in the presence of Solomon his father, in his being alive, saying, `How are ye counselling to answer this people?'

7 S ie sprachen zu ihm: Wirst du heute diesem Volk einen Dienst tun und ihnen zu Willen sein und sie erhören und ihnen gute Worte geben, so werden sie dir untertänig sein dein Leben lang.

And they speak unto him, saying, `If, to-day, thou art servant to this people, and hast served them, and answered them, and spoken unto them good words, then they have been to thee servants all the days.'

8 A ber er ließ außer acht der Ältesten Rat, den sie ihm gegeben hatten, und hielt einen Rat mit den Jungen, die mit ihm aufgewachsen waren und vor ihm standen.

And he forsaketh the counsel of the elders which they counselled him, and consulteth with the lads who have grown up with him, who are standing before him;

9 U nd er sprach zu Ihnen: Was ratet ihr, daß wir antworten diesem Volk, die zu mir gesagt haben: Mache das Joch leichter, das dein Vater auf uns gelegt hat?

and he saith unto them, `What are ye counselling, and we answer this people, who have spoken unto me, saying, Lighten of the yoke that thy father put upon us?'

10 U nd die Jungen, die mit ihm aufgewachsen waren, sprachen zu ihm: Du sollst zu dem Volk, das zu dir sagt: "Dein Vater hat unser Joch zu schwer gemacht; mache du es uns leichter", also sagen: Mein kleinster Finger soll dicker sein denn meines Vaters Lenden.

And they speak unto him -- the lads who had grown up with him -- saying, `Thus dost thou say to this people who have spoken unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou, make light upon us; thus dost thou speak unto them, My little is thicker than the loins of my father;

11 N un, mein Vater hat auf euch ein schweres Joch geladen; ich aber will des noch mehr über euch machen: Mein Vater hat euch mit Peitschen gezüchtigt; ich will euch mit Skorpionen züchtigen.

and now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- I chastise you with scorpions.'

12 A lso kam Jerobeam samt dem ganzen Volk zu Rehabeam am dritten Tage, wie der König gesagt hatte und gesprochen: Kommt wieder zu mir am dritten Tage.

And they come -- Jeroboam and all the people -- unto Rehoboam, on the third day, as the king had spoken, saying, `Come back unto me on the third day.'

13 U nd der König gab dem Volk eine harte Antwort und ließ außer acht den Rat, den ihm die Ältesten gegeben hatten,

And the king answereth the people sharply, and forsaketh the counsel of the elders which they counselled him,

14 u nd redete mit ihnen nach dem Rat der Jungen und sprach: Mein Vater hat euer Joch schwer gemacht; ich aber will des noch mehr über euch machen: Mein Vater hat euch mit Peitschen gezüchtigt; ich aber will euch mit Skorpionen züchtigen.

and speaketh unto them, according to the counsel of the lads, saying, `My father made your yoke heavy, and I add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- I chastise you with scorpions;'

15 A lso gehorchte der König dem Volk nicht; denn es war also abgewandt von dem HERRN, auf daß er sein Wort bekräftigte, das er durch Ahia von Silo geredet hatte zu Jerobeam, dem Sohn Nebats.

and the king hearkened not unto the people, for the revolution was from Jehovah, in order to establish His word that Jehovah spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam son of Nebat.

16 D a aber das ganze Israel sah, daß der König nicht auf sie hören wollte, gab das Volk dem König eine Antwort und sprach: Was haben wir für Teil an David oder Erbe am Sohn Isais? Israel, hebe dich zu deinen Hütten! So, siehe nun du zu deinem Hause, David! Also ging Israel in seine Hütten,

And all Israel see that the king hath not hearkened unto them, and the people send the king back word, saying, `What portion have we in David? yea, there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse; to thy tents, O Israel; now see thy house, O David!' and Israel goeth to its tents.

17 d aß Rehabeam regierte nur über die Kinder Israel, die in den Städten Juda's wohnten.

As to the sons of Israel, those dwelling in the cities of Judah -- over them reign doth Rehoboam.

18 U nd da der König Rehabeam hinsandte Adoram, den Rentmeister, warf ihn ganz Israel mit Steinen zu Tode. Aber der König Rehabeam stieg stracks auf einen Wagen, daß er flöhe gen Jerusalem.

And king Rehoboam sendeth Adoram who over the tribute, and all Israel cast at him stones, and he dieth; and king Rehoboam hath strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;

19 A lso fiel Israel ab vom Hause David bis auf diesen Tag.

and Israel transgresseth against the house of David unto this day.

20 D a nun ganz Israel hörte, daß Jerobeam war wiedergekommen, sandten sie hin und ließen ihn rufen zu der ganzen Gemeinde und machten ihn zum König über das ganze Israel. Und folgte niemand dem Hause David als der Stamm Juda allein.

And it cometh to pass, at all Israel's hearing that Jeroboam hath returned, that they send and call him unto the company, and cause him to reign over all Israel; none hath been after the house of David save the tribe of Judah alone.

21 U nd da Rehabeam gen Jerusalem kam, sammelte er das ganze Haus Juda und den Stamm Benjamin, hundertundachtzigtausend junge, streitbare Mannschaft, wider das Haus Israel zu streiten und das Königreich wieder an Rehabeam, den Sohn Salomos, zu bringen.

And Rehoboam cometh to Jerusalem, and assembleth all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen warriors, to fight with the house of Israel, to bring back the kingdom to Rehoboam son of Solomon.

22 E s kam aber Gottes Wort zu Semaja, dem Mann Gottes, und sprach:

And the word of God is unto Shemaiah a man of God, saying,

23 S age Rehabeam, dem Sohn Salomos, dem König Juda's, und zum ganzen Hause Juda und Benjamin und dem andern Volk und sprich:

`Speak unto Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and the rest of the people, saying,

24 S o spricht der HERR: Ihr sollt nicht hinaufziehen und streiten wider eure Brüder, die Kinder Israel; jedermann gehe wieder heim; denn solches ist von mir geschehen. Und sie gehorchten dem Wort des HERRN und kehrten um, daß sie hingingen, wie der Herr gesagt hatte.

Thus said Jehovah, Ye do not go up nor fight with your brethren the sons of Israel; turn back each to his house, for from Me hath this thing been;' and they hear the word of Jehovah, and turn back to go according to the word of Jehovah.

25 J erobeam aber baute Sichem auf dem Gebirge Ephraim und wohnte darin, und zog von da heraus und baute Pnuel.

And Jeroboam buildeth Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and dwelleth in it, and goeth out thence, and buildeth Penuel;

26 J erobeam aber gedachte in seinem Herzen: Das Königreich wird nun wieder zum Hause David fallen.

and Jeroboam saith in his heart, `Now doth the kingdom turn back to the house of David --

27 W enn dies Volk soll hinaufgehen, Opfer zu tun in des HERRN Hause zu Jerusalem, so wird sich das Herz dieses Volkes wenden zu ihrem Herrn Rehabeam, dem König Juda's, und sie werden mich erwürgen und wieder zu Rehabeam, dem König Juda's, fallen.

if this people go up to make sacrifices in the house of Jehovah in Jerusalem, then hath the heart of this people turned back unto their lord, unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they have slain me, and turned back unto Rehoboam king of Judah.'

28 U nd der König hielt einen Rat und machte zwei goldenen Kälber und sprach zu ihnen: es ist euch zuviel, hinauf gen Jerusalem zu gehen; siehe, da sind deine Götter, Israel, die dich aus Ägyptenland geführt haben.

And the king taketh counsel, and maketh two calves of gold, and saith unto them, `Enough to you of going up to Jerusalem; lo, thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'

29 U nd er setzte eins zu Beth-El, und das andere tat er gen Dan.

And he setteth the one in Beth-El, and the other he hath put in Dan,

30 U nd das geriet zur Sünde; denn das Volk ging hin vor das eine bis gen Dan.

and this thing becometh a sin, and the people go before the one -- unto Dan.

31 E r machte auch ein Haus der Höhen und machte Priester aus allem Volk, die nicht von den Kindern Levi waren.

And he maketh the house of high places, and maketh priests of the extremities of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi;

32 U nd er machte ein Fest am fünfzehnten Tage des achten Monats wie das Fest in Juda und opferte auf dem Altar. So tat er zu Beth-El, daß man den Kälbern opferte, die er gemacht hatte, und stiftete zu Beth-El die Priester der Höhen, die er gemacht hatte,

and Jeroboam maketh a festival in the eighth month, in the fifteenth day of the month, like the festival that in Judah, and he offereth on the altar -- so did he in Beth-El -- to sacrifice to the calves which he made, and he hath appointed in Beth-El the priests of the high places that he made.

33 u nd opferte auf dem Altar, den er gemacht hatte zu Beth-El, am fünfzehnten Tage des achten Monats, welchen er aus seinem Herzen erdacht hatte, und machte den Kindern Israel ein Fest und opferte auf dem Altar und räucherte.

And he offereth up on the altar that he made in Beth-El, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month that he devised of his own heart, and he maketh a festival to the sons of Israel, and offereth on the altar -- to make perfume.
