1 W enn man einen Erschlagenen findet in dem Lande, das dir der HERR, dein Gott, geben wird einzunehmen, und er liegt im Felde und man weiß nicht, wer ihn erschlagen hat,

`When one is found slain on the ground which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee to possess it -- fallen in a field -- it is not known who hath smitten him,

2 s o sollen deine Ältesten und Richter hinausgehen und von dem Erschlagenen messen bis an die Städte, die umher liegen.

then have thine elders and thy judges gone out and measured unto the cities which round about the slain one,

3 W elche Stadt die nächste ist, deren Älteste sollen eine junge Kuh von den Rindern nehmen, mit der man nicht gearbeitet und die noch nicht am Joch gezogen hat,

and it hath been, the city which near unto the slain one, even the elders of that city have taken a heifer of the herd, which hath not been wrought with, which hath not drawn in the yoke,

4 u nd sollen sie hinabführen in einen kiesigen Grund, der weder bearbeitet noch besät ist, und daselbst im Grund ihr den Hals brechen.

and the elders of that city have brought down the heifer unto a hard valley, which is not tilled nor sown, and have beheaded there the heifer in the valley.

5 D a sollen herzukommen die Priester, die Kinder Levi; denn der HERR, dein Gott, hat sie erwählt, daß sie ihm dienen und in seinem Namen segnen, und nach ihrem Mund sollen alle Sachen und alle Schäden gerichtet werden.

`And the priests, sons of Levi, have come nigh -- for on them hath Jehovah thy God fixed to serve Him, and to bless in the name of Jehovah, and by their mouth is every strife, and every stroke --

6 U nd alle Ältesten der Stadt sollen herzutreten zu dem Erschlagenen und ihre Hände waschen über die junge Kuh, der im Grunde der Hals gebrochen ist,

and all the elders of that city, who are near unto the slain one, do wash their hands over the heifer which is beheaded in the valley,

7 u nd sollen antworten und sagen: Unsre Hände haben dies Blut nicht vergossen, so haben's auch unsre Augen nicht gesehen.

and they have answered and said, Our hands have not shed this blood, and our eyes have not seen --

8 S ei gnädig deinem Volk Israel, das du, HERR, erlöst hast; lege nicht das unschuldige Blut auf dein Volk Israel! So werden sie über dem Blut versöhnt sein.

receive atonement for Thy people Israel, whom Thou hast ransomed, O Jehovah, and suffer not innocent blood in the midst of Thy people Israel; and the blood hath been pardoned to them,

9 A lso sollst du das unschuldige Blut von dir tun, daß du tust, was recht ist vor den Augen des HERRN.

and thou dost put away the innocent blood out of thy midst, for thou dost that which right in the eyes of Jehovah.

10 W enn du in einen Streit ziehst wider deine Feinde, und der HERR, dein Gott, gibt sie dir in deine Hände, daß du ihre Gefangenen wegführst,

`When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and Jehovah thy God hath given them into thy hand, and thou hast taken captive its captivity,

11 u nd siehst unter den Gefangenen ein schönes Weib und hast Lust zu ihr, daß du sie zum Weibe nehmest,

and hast seen in the captivity a woman of fair form, and hast delighted in her, and hast taken to thee for a wife,

12 s o führe sie in dein Haus und laß sie ihr Haar abscheren und ihre Nägel beschneiden

then thou hast brought her in unto the midst of thy household, and she hath shaved her head, and prepared her nails,

13 u nd die Kleider ablegen, darin sie gefangen ist, und laß sie sitzen in deinem Hause und beweinen einen Monat lang ihren Vater und ihre Mutter; darnach gehe zu ihr und nimm sie zur Ehe und laß sie dein Weib sein.

and turned aside the raiment of her captivity from off her, and hath dwelt in thy house, and bewailed her father and her mother a month of days, and afterwards thou dost go in unto her and hast married her, and she hath been to thee for a wife:

14 W enn du aber nicht mehr Lust zu ihr hast, so sollst du sie gehen lassen, wohin sie will, und nicht um Geld verkaufen noch versetzen, darum daß du sie gedemütigt hast.

`And it hath been -- if thou hast not delighted in her, that thou hast sent her away at her desire, and thou dost not at all sell her for money; thou dost not tyrannize over her, because that thou hast humbled her.

15 W enn jemand zwei Weiber hat, eine, die er liebhat, und eine, die er haßt, und sie ihm Kinder gebären, beide, die liebe und die unwerte, daß der Erstgeborene von der unwerten ist,

`When a man hath two wives, the one loved and the other hated, and they have borne to him sons (the loved one and the hated one), and the first-born son hath been to the hated one;

16 u nd die Zeit kommt, daß er seinen Kindern das Erbe austeile, so kann er nicht den Sohn der liebsten zum erstgeborenen Sohn machen für den erstgeborenen Sohn der unwerten,

then it hath been, in the day of his causing his sons to inherit that which he hath, he is not able to declare first-born the son of the loved one, in the face of the son of the hated one -- the first-born.

17 s ondern er soll den Sohn der unwerten für den ersten Sohn erkennen, daß er ihm zwiefältig gebe von allem, was vorhanden ist; denn derselbe ist der Erstling seiner Kraft, und der Erstgeburt Recht ist sein.

But the first-born, son of the hated one, he doth acknowledge, to give to him a double portion of all that is found with him, for he the beginning of his strength; to him the right of the first-born.

18 W enn jemand einen eigenwilligen und ungehorsamen Sohn hat, der seines Vaters und seiner Mutter Stimme nicht gehorcht und, wenn sie ihn züchtigen, ihnen nicht gehorchen will,

`When a man hath a son apostatizing and rebellious -- he is not hearkening to the voice of his father, and to the voice of his mother, and they have chastised him, and he doth not hearken unto them --

19 s o sollen ihn Vater und Mutter greifen und zu den Ältesten der Stadt führen und zu dem Tor des Orts,

then laid hold on him have his father and his mother, and they have brought him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place,

20 u nd zu den Ältesten der Stadt sagen: Dieser unser Sohn ist eigenwillig und ungehorsam und gehorcht unsrer Stimme nicht und ist ein Schlemmer und ein Trunkenbold.

and have said unto the elders of his city, Our son -- this one -- is apostatizing and rebellious; he is not hearkening to our voice -- a glutton and drunkard;

21 S o sollen ihn steinigen alle Leute der Stadt, daß er sterbe, und sollst also das Böse von dir tun, daß es ganz Israel höre und sich fürchte.

and all the men of his city have stoned him with stones, and he hath died, and thou hast put away the evil out of thy midst, and all Israel do hear and fear.

22 W enn jemand eine Sünde getan hat, die des Todes würdig ist, und wird getötet, und man hängt ihn an ein Holz,

`And when there is in a man a sin -- a cause of death, and he hath been put to death, and thou hast hanged him on a tree,

23 s o soll sein Leichnam nicht über Nacht an dem Holz bleiben, sondern du sollst ihn desselben Tages begraben, denn ein Gehenkter ist verflucht bei Gott, auf daß du dein Land nicht verunreinigst, das dir der HERR, dein Gott, gibt zum Erbe.

his corpse doth not remain on the tree, for thou dost certainly bury him in that day -- for a thing lightly esteemed of God the hanged one -- and thou dost not defile thy ground which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee -- an inheritance.
