1 W enn jemand einen Ochsen oder ein Schaf stiehlt und schlachtet's oder verkauft's, der soll fünf Ochsen für einen Ochsen wiedergeben und vier Schafe für ein Schaf.

`When a man doth steal an ox or sheep, and hath slaughtered it or sold it, five of the herd he doth repay for the ox, and four of the flock for the sheep.

2 W enn ein Dieb ergriffen wird, daß er einbricht, und wird dabei geschlagen, daß er stirbt, so soll man kein Blutgericht über jenen lassen gehen.

`If in the breaking through, the thief is found, and he hath been smitten, and hath died, there is no blood for him;

3 I st aber die Sonne über ihn aufgegangen, so soll man das Blutgericht gehen lassen. Es soll aber ein Dieb wiedererstatten; hat er nichts, so verkaufe man ihn um seinen Diebstahl.

if the sun hath risen upon him, blood for him, he doth certainly repay; if he have nothing, then he hath been sold for his theft;

4 F indet man aber bei ihm den Diebstahl lebendig, es sei ein Ochse, Esel oder Schaf, so soll er's zwiefältig wiedergeben.

if the theft is certainly found in his hand alive, whether ox, or ass, or sheep -- double he repayeth.

5 W enn jemand einen Acker oder Weinberg beschädigt, daß er sein Vieh läßt Schaden tun in eines andern Acker, der soll von dem Besten auf seinem Acker und Weinberg wiedererstatten.

`When a man depastureth a field or vineyard, and hath sent out his beast, and it hath pastured in the field of another, the best of his field, and the best of his vineyard, he doth repay.

6 W enn ein Feuer auskommt und ergreift die Dornen und verbrennt die Garben oder Getreide, das noch steht, oder den Acker, so soll der wiedererstatten, der das Feuer angezündet hat.

`When fire goeth forth, and hath found thorns, and a stack, or the standing corn, or the field, hath been consumed, he who causeth the burning doth certainly repay.

7 W enn jemand seinem Nächsten Geld oder Geräte zu bewahren gibt, und es wird demselben aus seinem Hause gestohlen: findet man den Dieb, so soll er's zwiefältig wiedergeben;

`When a man doth give unto his neighbour silver, or vessels to keep, and it hath been stolen out of the man's house; if the thief is found, he repayeth double.

8 f indet man aber den Dieb nicht, so soll man den Hauswirt vor die "Götter" bringen, ob er nicht seine Hand habe an seines Nächsten Habe gelegt.

`If the thief is not found, then the master of the house hath been brought near unto God, whether he hath not put forth his hand against the work of his neighbour;

9 W o einer den andern beschuldigt um irgend ein Unrecht, es sei um Ochsen oder Esel oder Schaf oder Kleider oder allerlei, das verloren ist, so soll beider Sache vor die "Götter" kommen. Welchen die "Götter" verdammen, der soll's zwiefältig seinem Nächsten wiedergeben.

for every matter of transgression, for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, for any lost thing of which it is said that it is his; unto God cometh the matter of them both; he whom God doth condemn, he repayeth double to his neighbour.

10 W enn jemand seinem Nächsten einen Esel oder Ochsen oder ein Schaf oder irgend ein Vieh zu bewahren gibt, und es stirbt ihm oder wird beschädigt oder wird ihm weggetrieben, daß es niemand sieht,

`When a man doth give unto his neighbour an ass, or ox, or sheep, or any beast to keep, and it hath died, or hath been hurt, or taken captive, none seeing --

11 s o soll man's unter ihnen auf einen Eid bei dem HERRN kommen lassen, ob er nicht habe seine Hand an seines Nächsten Habe gelegt; und des Gutes Herr soll's annehmen, also daß jener nicht bezahlen müsse.

an oath of Jehovah is between them both, that he hath not put forth his hand against the work of his neighbour, and its owner hath accepted, and he doth not repay;

12 S tiehlt's ihm aber ein Dieb, so soll er's seinem Herrn bezahlen.

but if it is certainly stolen from him, he doth repay to its owner;

13 W ird es aber zerrissen, soll er Zeugnis davon bringen und nicht bezahlen.

if it is certainly torn, he bringeth it in -- a witness; the torn thing he doth not repay.

14 W enn's jemand von seinem Nächsten entlehnt, und es wird beschädigt oder stirbt, daß sein Herr nicht dabei ist, so soll er's bezahlen.

`And when a man doth ask from his neighbour, and it hath been hurt or hath died -- its owner not being with it -- he doth certainly repay;

15 I st sein Herr aber dabei, soll er's nicht bezahlen, so er's um sein Geld gedingt hat.

if its owner with it, he doth not repay, -- if it a hired thing, it hath come for its hire.

16 W enn jemand eine Jungfrau beredet, die noch nicht verlobt ist, und bei ihr schläft, der soll ihr geben ihre Morgengabe und sie zum Weibe haben.

`And when a man doth entice a virgin who not betrothed, and hath lain with her, he doth certainly endow her to himself for a wife;

17 W eigert sich aber ihr Vater, sie ihm zu geben, soll er Geld darwägen, wieviel einer Jungfrau zur Morgengabe gebührt.

if her father utterly refuse to give her to him, money he doth weigh out according to the dowry of virgins.

18 D ie Zauberinnen sollst du nicht leben lassen.

`A witch thou dost not keep alive.

19 W er bei einem Vieh liegt, der soll des Todes sterben.

`Whoever lieth with a beast is certainly put to death.

20 W er den Göttern opfert und nicht dem HERRN allein, der sei verbannt.

`He who is sacrificing to a god, save to Jehovah alone, is devoted.

21 D ie Fremdlinge sollst du nicht schinden noch unterdrücken; denn ihr seid auch Fremdlinge in Ägyptenland gewesen.

`And a sojourner thou dost not oppress, nor crush him, for sojourners ye have been in the land of Egypt.

22 I hr sollt keine Witwen und Waisen bedrängen.

`Any widow or orphan ye do not afflict;

23 W irst du sie bedrängen, so werden sie zu mir schreien, und ich werde ihr Schreien erhören;

if thou dost really afflict him, surely if he at all cry unto Me, I certainly hear his cry;

24 s o wird mein Zorn ergrimmen, daß ich euch mit dem Schwert töte und eure Weiber Witwen und eure Kinder Waisen werden.

and Mine anger hath burned, and I have slain you by the sword, and your wives have been widows, and your sons orphans.

25 W enn du Geld leihst einem aus meinem Volk, der arm ist bei dir, sollst du ihn nicht zu Schaden bringen und keinen Wucher an ihm treiben.

`If thou dost lend My poor people with thee money, thou art not to him as a usurer; thou dost not lay on him usury;

26 W enn du von deinem Nächsten ein Kleid zum Pfande nimmst, sollst du es ihm wiedergeben, ehe die Sonne untergeht;

if thou dost at all take in pledge the garment of thy neighbour, during the going in of the sun thou dost return it to him:

27 d enn sein Kleid ist seine einzige Decke seiner Haut, darin er schläft. Wird er aber zu mir schreien, so werde ich ihn erhören; denn ich bin gnädig.

for it alone is his covering, it his garment for his skin; wherein doth he lie down? and it hath come to pass, when he doth cry unto Me, that I have heard, for I gracious.

28 D en "Göttern" sollst du nicht fluchen, und den Obersten in deinem Volk nicht lästern.

`God thou dost not revile, and a prince among thy people thou dost not curse.

29 D einer Frucht Fülle und Saft sollst du nicht zurückhalten. Deinen ersten Sohn sollst du mir geben.

`Thy fulness and thy liquids thou dost not delay; the first-born of thy sons thou dost give to Me;

30 S o sollst du auch tun mit deinem Ochsen und Schafe. Sieben Tage laß es bei seiner Mutter sein, am achten Tag sollst du mir's geben.

so thou dost to thine ox, to thy sheep; seven days it is with its dam, on the eighth day thou dost give it to Me.

31 I hr sollt heilige Leute vor mir sein; darum sollt ihr kein Fleisch essen, das auf dem Felde von Tieren zerrissen ist, sondern es vor die Hunde werfen.

`And ye are holy men to Me, and flesh torn in the field ye do not eat, to a dog ye do cast it.
