1 L a parola dell'Eterno mi fu rivolta, dicendo:

`And there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying:

2 « Cosa intendete dire quando usate questo proverbio circa il paese d'Israele, dicendo: I padri hanno mangiato l'uva acerba e i denti dei figli si sono allegati?

`What -- to you, ye -- using this simile Concerning the ground of Israel, saying: Fathers do eat unripe fruit, And the sons' teeth are blunted?

3 C om'è vero che io vivo», dice il Signore, l'Eterno, «non userete piú questo proverbio in Israele.

I live -- an affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, Ye have no more the use of this simile in Israel.

4 E cco, tutte le anime sono mie; tanto l'anima del padre come l'anima del figlio sono mie. L'anima che pecca morirà.

Lo, all the souls are Mine, As the soul of the father, So also the soul of the son -- they are Mine, The soul that is sinning -- it doth die.

5 S e uno è giusto e pratica l'equità e la giustizia,

And a man, when he is righteous, And hath done judgment and righteousness,

6 s e non mangia sui monti e non alza gli occhi agli idoli della casa d'Israele, se non contamina la moglie del suo vicino e non si accosta a donna mentre è impura,

On the mountains he hath not eaten, And his eyes he hath not lifted up Unto idols of the house of Israel, And the wife of his neighbour defiled not, And to a separated woman cometh not near,

7 s e non opprime nessuno, se restituisce il suo pegno al debitore, se non compie alcuna rapina, se dà il suo pane all'affamato e copre di vesti l'ignudo.

A man -- he doth not oppress, His pledge to the debtor he doth return, Plunder he doth not take away, His bread to the hungry he doth give, And the naked doth cover with a garment,

8 s e non presta a interesse e non dà ad usura, se ritrae la sua mano dall'iniquità e giudica secondo equità fra uomo e uomo,

In usury he doth not give, and increase taketh not, From perversity he turneth back his hand, True judgment he doth between man and man.

9 s e cammina nei miei statuti e osserva i miei decreti agendo con fedeltà, questi è giusto e certamente vivrà», dice il Signore, l'Eterno.

In My statutes he doth walk, And My judgments he hath kept -- to deal truly, Righteous he, he surely liveth, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah.

10 « Ma se ha generato un figlio violento, che spande il sangue e fa a suo fratello qualcuna di queste cose

And -- he hath begotten a son, A burglar -- a shedder of blood, And he hath made a brother of one of these,

11 ( mentre il padre non ha commesso nessuna di queste cose), e mangia sui monti e contamina la moglie del suo vicino,

And he all those hath not done, For even on the mountains he hath eaten, And the wife of his neighbour he hath defiled,

12 o pprime il povero e il bisognoso, compie rapine, non restituisce il pegno, alza gli occhi agli idoli, commette abominazioni,

The afflicted and needy he hath oppressed, Plunder he hath taken violently away, A pledge he doth not return, And unto the idols he hath lifted up his eyes, Abomination he hath done!

13 p resta a interesse e dà ad usura, vivrà forse costui? Egli non vivrà. Poiché ha commesso tutte queste abominazioni certamente morrà; il suo sangue ricadrà su lui.

In usury he hath given, and increase taken, And he liveth: he doth not live, All these abominations he hath done, He doth surely die, his blood is on him.

14 M a se costui genera un figlio che, vedendo tutti i peccati commessi dal padre, se ne rende conto ma non li commette

And -- lo, he hath begotten a son, And he seeth all the sins of his father, That he hath done, and he feareth, And doth not do like them,

15 n on mangia sui monti, non alza gli occhi agli idoli della casa d'Israele, non contamina la moglie del suo vicino,

On the mountains he hath not eaten, And his eyes he hath not lifted up Unto idols of the house of Israel, The wife of his neighbour he hath not defiled,

16 n on opprime alcuno, non prende pegni, non compie rapine, ma dà il suo pane all'affamato, copre di vesti l'ignudo,

A man -- he hath not oppressed, A pledge he hath not bound, And plunder he hath not taken away, His bread to the hungry he hath given, And the naked he covered with a garment,

17 t rattiene la sua mano dall'opprimere il povero, non prende interesse né usura, osserva i miei decreti e cammina nei miei statuti, costui non morirà per l'iniquità del padre; egli certamente vivrà.

From the afflicted he hath turned back his hand, Usury and increase he hath not taken, My judgments he hath done, In My statutes he hath walked, He doth not die for the iniquity of his father, He doth surely live.

18 S uo padre invece, poiché ha oppresso e ha compiuto rapine a danno del fratello e ha fatto ciò che non è bene in mezzo al suo popolo, ecco egli morirà per la sua iniquità.

His father -- because he used oppression, Did violently Plunder a brother, And that which not good did in the midst of his people, And lo, he is dying in his iniquity.

19 T uttavia voi dite: "Perché il figlio non porta l'iniquità del padre?" Poiché il figlio pratica l'equità e la giustizia, osserva tutti i miei statuti e li mette in pratica, certamente egli vivrà.

And ye have said, Wherefore hath not the son, Borne of the iniquity of the father? And -- the son judgment and righteousness hath done, All My statutes he hath kept, And he doeth them, he surely liveth.

20 L 'anima che pecca morirà, il figlio non porterà l'iniquità del padre e il padre non porterà l'iniquità del figlio; la giustizia del giusto sarà su di lui, l'empietà dell'empio sarà su di lui.

The soul that doth sin -- it doth die. A son doth not bear of the iniquity of the father, And a father doth not bear of the iniquity of the son, The righteousness of the righteous is on him, And the wickedness of the wicked is on him.

21 S e però l'empio si allontana da tutti i peccati che commetteva, se osserva tutti i miei statuti e pratica l'equità e la giustizia, egli certamente vivrà; non morirà.

And the wicked -- when he turneth back From all his sins that he hath done, And he hath kept all My statutes, And hath done judgment and righteousness, He doth surely live, he doth not die.

22 N essuna delle trasgressioni che ha commesso sarà piú ricordata contro di lui; egli vivrà per la giustizia che pratica.

All his transgressions that he hath done Are not remembered to him, In his righteousness that he hath done he liveth.

23 P rovo forse piacere della morte dell'empio?»; dice il Signore, l'Eterno, «e non piuttosto che egli si converta dalle sue vie e viva?

Do I at all desire the death of the wicked? An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, Is it not in his turning back from his way -- And he hath lived?

24 M a se il giusto si allontana dalla sua giustizia e commette l'iniquità e imita tutte le abominazioni che l'empio fa vivrà forse costui? Tutta la giustizia che ha compiuto non sarà piú ricordata; per la trasgressione che ha compiuto e per il peccato che ha commesso, egli morirà a causa di essi.

And in the turning back of the righteous from his righteousness, And he hath done perversity, According to all the abominations That the wicked hath done, he doth -- thus he liveth, All his righteousnesses that he hath done are not remembered, For his trespass that he hath trespassed, And for his sin that he hath sinned, For them he doth die.

25 T uttavia voi dite: "La via del Signore non è giusta". Ascoltate ora, o casa d'Israele: è proprio la mia via che non è giusta, o sono piuttosto le vostre vie che non sono giuste?

And ye have said, Not pondered is the way of the Lord. Hear, I pray you, O house of Israel, My way -- is it not pondered? Are not your ways unpondered?

26 S e il giusto si allontana dalla sua giustizia e commette l'iniquità, e a causa di questo muore, muore per l'iniquità che ha commesso.

In the turning back of the righteous from his righteousness, And he hath done perversity, And he is dying by them, for his perversity That he hath done he dieth.

27 S e invece l'empio si allontana dall'empietà che commetteva e pratica l'equità e la giustizia, egli salverà la sua anima.

And in the turning back of the wicked From his wickedness that he hath done, And he doth judgment and righteousness, He his soul doth keep alive.

28 P oiché ha considerato di allontanarsi da tutte le trasgressioni che commetteva, certamente vivrà; non morirà.

And he seeth and turneth back, From all his transgressions that he hath done, He doth surely live, he doth not die,

29 T uttavia la casa d'Israele dice: "La via del Signore non è giusta". Sono proprio le mie vie che non sono giuste, o casa d'Israele, o sono piuttosto le vostre vie che non sono giuste?

And the house of Israel have said, Not pondered is the way of the Lord, My ways -- are they not pondered? O house of Israel -- are not your ways unpondered?

30 P erciò giudicherò ciascuno di voi secondo le sue vie, o casa d'Israele», dice il Signore, l'Eterno. «Ravvedetevi e abbandonate tutte le vostre trasgressioni cosí l'iniquità non vi sarà piú causa di rovina.

Therefore, each according to his ways I judge you, O house of Israel? An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, Turn ye back, yea, turn yourselves back, From all your transgressions, And iniquity is not to you for a stumbling-block,

31 G ettate lontano da voi tutte le vostre trasgressioni che avete commesso e fatevi un cuor nuovo e uno spirito nuovo. Perché mai vorreste morire, o casa d'Israele?

Cast from off you all your transgressions, By which ye have transgressed, And make to you a new heart, and a new spirit, And why do ye die, O house of Israel?

32 I o infatti non provo alcun piacere nella morte di chi muore», dice il Signore, l'Eterno. «Convertitevi dunque e vivrete».

For I have no pleasure in the death of the dying, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, And turn ye back and live!
