1 O ra Adamo conobbe Eva sua moglie, la quale concepì e partorì Caino, e disse: «Ho acquistato un uomo, dall'Eterno».

And the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceiveth and beareth Cain, and saith, `I have gotten a man by Jehovah;'

2 P oi partorì ancora Abele, suo fratello. E Abele divenne pastore di greggi; mentre Caino divenne lavoratore della terra.

and she addeth to bear his brother, even Abel. And Abel is feeding a flock, and Cain hath been servant of the ground.

3 C ol passare del tempo, avvenne che Caino fece un'offerta di frutti della terra all'Eterno;

And it cometh to pass at the end of days that Cain bringeth from the fruit of the ground a present to Jehovah;

4 O ra Abele offerse anch'egli dei primogeniti del suo gregge e il loro grasso. E l'Eterno riguardò Abele e la sua offerta,

and Abel, he hath brought, he also, from the female firstlings of his flock, even from their fat ones; and Jehovah looketh unto Abel and unto his present,

5 m a non riguardò Caino e la sua offerta. Così Caino ne fu molto irritato, e il suo viso ne fu abbattuto.

and unto Cain and unto his present He hath not looked; and it is very displeasing to Cain, and his countenance is fallen.

6 A llora l'Eterno disse a Caino: «Perché sei tu irritato e perché è il tuo volto abbattuto?

And Jehovah saith unto Cain, `Why hast thou displeasure? and why hath thy countenance fallen?

7 S e fai bene non sarai tu accettato? Ma se fai male, il peccato sta spiandoti alla porta e i suoi desideri sono volti a te; ma tu lo devi dominare».

Is there not, if thou dost well, acceptance? and if thou dost not well, at the opening a sin-offering is crouching, and unto thee its desire, and thou rulest over it.'

8 E Caino parlò con suo fratello Abele; quando furono nei campi, Caino si levò contro suo fratello Abele e lo uccise.

And Cain saith unto Abel his brother, and it cometh to pass in their being in the field, that Cain riseth up against Abel his brother, and slayeth him.

9 A llora l'Eterno disse a Caino: Dov'è tuo fratello Abele?». Egli rispose: Non lo so; sono io forse il custode di mio fratello?».

And Jehovah saith unto Cain, `Where Abel thy brother?' and he saith, `I have not known; my brother's keeper -- I?'

10 L 'Eterno disse: «Che hai tu fatto? La voce del sangue di tuo fratello grida a me dalla terra.

And He saith, `What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood is crying unto Me from the ground;

11 E ora tu sei piú maledetto della terra che ha aperto la sua bocca per ricevere il sangue di tuo fratello dalla tua mano.

and now, cursed thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive the blood of thy brother from thy hand;

12 Q uando coltiverai il suolo, esso non ti darà piú i suoi prodotti, e tu sarai vagabondo e fuggiasco sulla terra».

when thou tillest the ground, it doth not add to give its strength to thee -- a wanderer, even a trembling one, thou art in the earth.'

13 A llora Caino disse all'Eterno: Il mio castigo è troppo grande perché io lo possa sopportare.

And Cain saith unto Jehovah, `Greater is my punishment than to be borne;

14 E cco, tu mi scacci oggi dalla faccia di questo suolo e sarò nascosto dalla tua faccia; e sarò vagabondo e fuggiasco per la terra, e avverrà che chiunque mi troverà mi ucciderà».

lo, Thou hast driven me to-day from off the face of the ground, and from Thy face I am hid; and I have been a wanderer, even a trembling one, in the earth, and it hath been -- every one finding me doth slay me.'

15 L 'Eterno gli disse: Perciò, chiunque ucciderà Caino, egli sarà punito sette volte». E l'Eterno mise un segno su Caino affinché nessuno trovandolo, lo uccidesse.

And Jehovah saith to him, `Therefore -- of any slayer of Cain sevenfold it is required;' and Jehovah setteth to Cain a token that none finding him doth slay him.

16 A llora Caino si allontanò dalla presenza dell'Eterno e dimorò nel paese di Nod, ad est di Eden.

And Cain goeth out from before Jehovah, and dwelleth in the land, moving about east of Eden;

17 E Caino conobbe sua moglie, ed ella concepì e partorì Enok. Poi Caino costruì una città, a cui diede nome Enok, dal nome di suo figlio.

and Cain knoweth his wife, and she conceiveth, and beareth Enoch; and he is building a city, and he calleth the name of the city, according to the name of his son -- Enoch.

18 E a Enok nacque Irad; Irad generò Mehujael; Mehujael generò Methusael; e Methusael generò Lamek.

And born to Enoch is Irad; and Irad hath begotten Mehujael; and Mehujael hath begotten Methusael; and Methusael hath begotten Lamech.

19 E Lamek si prese due mogli: il nome di una era Ada, e il nome dell'altra Tsillah.

And Lamech taketh to himself two wives, the name of the one Adah, and the name of the second Zillah.

20 E Ada partorì Jabal, che fu il padre di quelli che abitano sotto le tende e allevano il bestiame.

And Adah beareth Jabal, he hath been father of those inhabiting tents and purchased possessions;

21 O ra il nome di suo fratello era Jubal, che fu il padre di tutti quelli che suonano la cetra e il flauto.

and the name of his brother Jubal, he hath been father of every one handling harp and organ.

22 T sillah partorì anch'essa Tubalcain, l'artefice di ogni sorta di strumenti di bronzo e di ferro; e la sorella di Tubal-cain fu Naama.

And Zillah she also bare Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron; and a sister of Tubal-Cain Naamah.

23 P oi Lamek disse alle sue mogli: «Ada e Tsillah ascoltate la mia voce; mogli di Lamek, fate attenzione alle mie parole! Si, io ho ucciso un uomo perché mi ha ferito, e un giovane per avermi causato una lividura.

And Lamech saith to his wives: -- `Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, give ear my saying: For a man I have slain for my wound, Even a young man for my hurt;

24 S e Caino sarà vendicato sette volte, Lamek lo sarà settanta volte sette».

For sevenfold is required for Cain, And for Lamech seventy and sevenfold.'

25 Q uindi Adamo conobbe ancora la sua moglie, che partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Seth, perché ella disse: «Dio mi ha dato un altro discendente al posto di Abele, che Caino ha ucciso».

And Adam again knoweth his wife, and she beareth a son, and calleth his name Seth, `for God hath appointed for me another seed instead of Abel:' for Cain had slain him.

26 A nche a Seth nacque un figlio, e lo chiamò Enosh. Allora si cominciò a invocare il nome dell'Eterno.

And to Seth, to him also a son hath been born, and he calleth his name Enos; then a beginning was made of preaching in the name of Jehovah.
