1 O r Abimelek, figlio di Jerubbaal, andò a Sichem dai fratelli di sua madre e parlò con loro e a tutta la famiglia del padre di sua madre, dicendo:

and Abimelech son of Jerubbaal goeth to Shechem, unto his mother's brethren, and speaketh unto them, and unto all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,

2 « Deh, dite a tutti gli abitanti di Sichem: "Che cosa è meglio per voi, che tutti i settanta figli di Jerubbaal regnino su di voi, oppure che regni su di voi uno solo?". E ricordatevi che io sono vostre ossa e vostra carne».

`Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, Which good for you -- the ruling over you of seventy men (all the sons of Jerubbaal), or the ruling over you of one man? -- and ye have remembered that I your bone and your flesh.'

3 I fratelli di sua madre riportarono tutte queste parole intorno a lui a tutti gli abitanti di Sichem; e il loro cuore si piegò a favore di Abimelek, perché dissero: «nostro fratello».

And his mother's brethren speak concerning him, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, all these words, and their heart inclineth after Abimelech, for they said, `He our brother;'

4 C osì gli diedero settanta sicli d'argento, che tolsero dal tempio di Baal-Berith, con i quali Abimelek assoldò uomini di nessun valore e temerari; ed essi lo seguirono.

and they give to him seventy silverings out of the house of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech hireth with them men, vain and unstable, and they go after him;

5 P oi egli andò alla casa di suo padre a Ofrah e uccise sopra una stessa pietra i suoi fratelli, i settanta figli di Jerubbaal. Ma Jotham, figlio minore di Jerubbaal, scampò, perché si era nascosto.

and he goeth into the house of his father at Ophrah, and slayeth his brethren, sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone; and Jotham, youngest son of Jerubbaal, is left, for he was hidden.

6 A llora tutti gli abitanti di Sichem e tutta la casa di Millo si radunarono e andarono a proclamare re Abimelek, presso la quercia della stele che si trova a Sichem.

And all the masters of Shechem are gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and come and cause Abimelech to reign for king at the oak of the camp which in Shechem;

7 Q uando Jotham fu informato della cosa, andò a porsi sulla sommità del monte Gherizim e, alzando la voce, gridò: «Ascoltatemi, abitanti di Sichem, e possa DIO ascoltare voi!

and they declare to Jotham, and he goeth and standeth on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifteth up his voice, and calleth, and saith to them, `Hearken unto me, O masters of Shechem, and God doth hearken unto you:

8 U n giorno gli alberi si misero in cammino per ungere un re che regnasse su di loro; e dissero all'ulivo: "Regna su di noi".

`The trees have diligently gone to anoint over them a king, and they say to the olive, Reign thou over us.

9 M a l'ulivo rispose loro: "Rinuncerò io al mio olio col quale DIO e gli uomini sono onorati, per andare ad agitarmi sopra gli alberi?".

And the olive saith to them, Have I ceased from my fatness, by which they honour gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

10 A llora gli alberi dissero al fico: "Vieni tu a regnare su di noi".

And the trees say to the fig, Come thou, reign over us.

11 M a il fico rispose loro: "Rinuncerò io alla mia dolcezza e al mio frutto squisito per andare ad agitarmi sopra gli alberi?".

And the fig saith to them, Have I ceased from my sweetness, and my good increase, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

12 A llora gli alberi dissero alla vite: "Vieni tu a regnare su di noi".

`And the trees say to the vine, Come thou, reign over us.

13 M a la vite rispose loro: "Rinuncerò io al mio mosto che rallegra DIO e gli uomini, per andare ad agitarmi sopra gli alberi?".

And the vine saith to them, Have I ceased from my new wine, which is rejoicing gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

14 A llora tutti gli alberi dissero al rovo: "Vieni tu a regnare su di noi".

And all the trees say unto the bramble, Come thou, reign over us.

15 I l rovo rispose agli alberi: "Se volete veramente ungermi re per regnare su di voi, venite a ripararvi alla mia ombra; altrimenti esca dal rovo un fuoco, che divori i cedri del Libano!".

And the bramble saith unto the trees, If in truth ye are anointing me for king over you, come, take refuge in my shadow; and if not -- fire cometh out from the bramble, and devoureth the cedars of Lebanon.

16 M a voi non avete agito con fedeltà e integrità proclamando re Abimelek, non vi siete comportati bene verso Jerubbaal e la sua casa e non lo avete trattato come meritava,

`And, now, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted, when ye make Abimelech king; and if ye have done good with Jerubbaal, and with his house; and if according to the deed of his hands ye have done to him --

17 p erché mio padre ha combattuto per voi, ha messo a repentaglio la propria vita e vi ha liberato dalle mani di Madian.

because my father hath fought for you, and doth cast away his life from, and deliver you from the hand of Midian;

18 O ggi invece voi siete insorti contro la casa di mio padre, avete ucciso i suoi settanta figli sulla stessa pietra e avete proclamato re dei Sichemiti Abimelek figlio della sua serva, perché è vostro fratello.

and ye have risen against the house of my father to-day, and slay his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and cause Abimelech son of his handmaid to reign over the masters of Shechem, because he your brother --

19 S e dunque oggi avete agito con fedeltà e con integrità verso Jerubbaal e la sua casa, godetevi Abimelek, ed egli si goda voi!

yea, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, rejoice ye in Abimelech, and he doth rejoice -- even he -- in you;

20 M a se la cosa non è così, esca da Abimelek un fuoco che divori gli abitanti di Sichem e la casa di Millo, ed esca dagli abitanti di Sichem e dalla casa di Millo un fuoco che divori Abimelek».

and if not -- fire cometh out from Abimelech and devoureth the masters of Shechem and the house of Millo, and fire cometh out from the masters of Shechem and from the house of Millo, and devoureth Abimelech.'

21 P oi Jotham corse via, fuggì e andò a stare a Beer per paura di suo fratello Abimelek.

And Jotham hasteth, and fleeth, and goeth to Beer, and dwelleth there, from the face of Abimelech his brother.

22 A bimelek padroneggiò sopra Israele tre anni.

And Abimelech is prince over Israel three years,

23 P oi DIO mandò un cattivo spirito fra Abimelek e gli abitanti di Sichem, e gli abitanti di Sichem tradirono Abimelek,

and God sendeth an evil spirit between Abimelech and the masters of Shechem, and the masters of Shechem deal treacherously with Abimelech,

24 a ffinché la violenza fatta ai settanta figli di Jerubbaal fosse risolta, e il loro sangue ricadesse sul loro fratello Abimelek, che li aveva uccisi e sugli abitanti di Sichem, che l'avevano aiutato a uccidere i suoi fratelli.

for the coming in of the violence the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, and of their blood to place on Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and on the masters of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.

25 G li abitanti di Sichem misero uomini in agguato contro di lui sulla cima dei monti, ed essi depredarono tutti quelli che passavano sulla strada vicino a loro. Abimelek fu informato della cosa.

And the masters of Shechem set for him ambushes on the top of the hills, and rob every one who passeth over by them in the way, and it is declared to Abimelech.

26 P oi Gaal, figlio di Ebed, e i suoi fratelli vennero e si trasferirono a Sichem, e gli abitanti di Sichem riposero in lui la loro fiducia.

And Gaal son of Ebed cometh -- also his brethren -- and they pass over into Shechem, and the masters of Shechem trust in him,

27 E ssi uscirono nei campi, raccolsero l'uva nelle loro vigne, la pigiarono e fecero festa. Poi entrarono nella casa del loro dio, mangiarono, bevvero e maledissero Abimelek.

and go out into the field, and gather their vineyards, and tread, and make praises, and go into the house of their god, and eat and drink, and revile Abimelech.

28 G aal, figlio di Ebed, disse: «Chi è Abimelek e che cosa è Sichem, perché lo dobbiamo servire? Non è forse figlio di Jerubbaal, e non è Zebul il suo luogotenente? Servite piuttosto agli uomini di Hamor, padre di Sichem! Ma perché mai dovremmo noi servire costui?

And Gaal son of Ebed saith, `Who Abimelech, and who Shechem, that we serve him? is not son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his commander? Serve ye the men of Hamor father of Shechem, and wherefore do we serve him -- we?

29 S e questo popolo fosse sotto di me, io scaccerei Abimelek!». Poi disse ad Abimelek: «Rinforza il tuo esercito e fatti avanti!».

and oh that this people were in my hand -- then I turn Abimelech aside;' and he saith to Abimelech, `Increase thy host, and come out.'

30 Q uando Zebul, governatore della città udì le parole di Gaal, figlio di Ebed, si accese d'ira,

And Zebul, prince of the city, heareth the words of Gaal son of Ebed, and his anger burneth,

31 e mandò segretamente messaggeri ad Abimelek per dirgli: «Ecco, Gaal figlio di Ebed, e i suoi fratelli sono venuti a Sichem, ed ecco, sollevano la città contro di te.

and he sendeth messengers unto Abimelech deceitfully, saying, `Lo, Gaal son of Ebed and his brethren are coming into Shechem, and lo, they are fortifying the city against thee;

32 O r dunque levati di notte, tu e la gente che è con te, e tendi un'imboscata nella campagna;

and, now, rise by night, thou and the people who with thee, and lay wait in the field,

33 e domattina, appena spunta il sole, ti leverai e piomberai sulla città. Quando poi Gaal con la gente che è con lui uscirà contro di te, tu gli farai quel che credi opportuno».

and it hath been, in the morning, about the rising of the sun, thou dost rise early, and hast pushed against the city; and lo, he and the people who with him are going out unto thee -- and thou hast done to him as thy hand doth find.'

34 A bimelek e tutta la gente che era con lui si levarono di notte e tesero un'imboscata contro Sichem, divisi in quattro schiere.

And Abimelech riseth, and all the people who with him, by night, and they lay wait against Shechem -- four detachments;

35 Q uando Gaal, figlio di Ebed, uscì e si fermò all'ingresso della porta della città Abimelek uscì dall'imboscata con la gente che era con lui.

and Gaal son of Ebed goeth out, and standeth at the opening of the gate of the city, and Abimelech riseth -- also the people who with him -- from the ambush,

36 N el vedere quella gente, Gaal disse a Zebul: «Ecco gente che scende dall'alto dei monti». Ma Zebul gli rispose: «Tu scambi l'ombra dei monti per uomini».

and Gaal seeth the people, and saith unto Zebul, `Lo, people are coming down from the top of the hills;' and Zebul saith unto him, `The shadow of the hills thou art seeing like men.'

37 G aal riprese a parlare, dicendo: «Guarda, c'è gente che scende dalle alture del paese, e un'altra schiera sta arrivando per la via della quercia degli indovini».

And Gaal addeth yet to speak, and saith, `Lo, people are coming down from the high part of the land, and another detachment is coming by the way of the oak of Meonenim.'

38 A llora Zebul gli disse: «Dov'è la tua spavalderia di quando dicevi: "Chi è Abimelek, perché lo dobbiamo servire?". Non è questo il popolo che disprezzavi? Orsù, fatti avanti e combatti contro di lui!».

And Zebul saith unto him, `Where now thy mouth, in that thou sayest, Who Abimelech that we serve him? is not this the people against which thou hast kicked? go out, I pray thee now, and fight against it.'

39 A llora Gaal uscì alla testa degli abitanti di Sichem e diede battaglia ad Abimelek.

And Gaal goeth out before the masters of Shechem, and fighteth against Abimelech,

40 M a Abimelek lo inseguì, ed egli fuggì davanti a lui; molti uomini caddero mortalmente feriti fino all'ingresso della porta.

and Abimelech pursueth him, and he fleeth from his presence, and many fall wounded -- unto the opening of the gate.

41 A bimelek si fermò quindi ad Arumah, e Zebul scacciò Gaal e i suoi fratelli, che non poterono piú rimanere a Sichem.

And Abimelech abideth in Arumah, and Zebul casteth out Gaal and his brethren from dwelling in Shechem.

42 I l giorno seguente il popolo di Sichem uscì per i campi; e Abimelek ne fu informato.

And it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that the people go out to the field, and they declare to Abimelech,

43 E gli prese allora la sua gente, la divise in tre schiere, e fece un'imboscata nei campi; quando vide che il popolo usciva dalla città, gli si levò contro e ne fece una strage.

and he taketh the people, and divideth them into three detachments, and layeth wait in a field, and looketh, and lo, the people are coming out from the city, and he riseth against them, and smiteth them.

44 P oi Abimelek e la gente che aveva con sé si precipitarono in avanti e vennero a porsi all'ingresso della porta della città, mentre le altre due schiere si gettarono su tutti quelli che erano nei campi e ne fecero una strage.

And Abimelech and the detachments who with him have pushed on, and stand at the opening of the gate of the city, and the two detachments have pushed against all who are in the field, and smite them,

45 A bimelek prese d'assalto la città tutto quel giorno, la espugnò e uccise il popolo che vi si trovava; poi spianò la città e la cosparse di sale.

and Abimelech hath fought against the city all that day, and captureth the city, and the people who in it he hath slain, and he breaketh down the city, and soweth it salt.

46 Q uando tutti gli abitanti della torre di Sichem udirono questo, si ritirarono nel torrione del tempio del dio Berit.

And all the masters of the tower of Shechem hear, and go in unto the high place of the house of the god Berith,

47 F u così riferito ad Abimelek che tutti gli abitanti della torre di Sichem si erano radunati insieme.

and it is declared to Abimelech that all the masters of the tower of Shechem have gathered themselves together,

48 A llora Abimelek salì sul monte Tsalmon, lui con tutta la gente che aveva con sé; poi Abimelek impugnò una scure, tagliò il ramo di un albero, lo sollevò e se lo mise in spalla; disse quindi alla gente che era con lui: Ciò che mi avete visto fare, fatelo presto anche voi!».

and Abimelech goeth up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people who with him, and Abimelech taketh the great axe in his hand, and cutteth off a bough of the trees, and lifteth it up, and setteth on his shoulder, and saith unto the people who with him, `What ye have seen I have done -- haste, do ye like it.'

49 C osì ciascuno di loro tagliò un ramo e seguì Abimelek; posero i rami contro il torrione e arsero il torrione al di sopra di loro. Così perì tutta la gente della torre di Sichem, circa mille persone, fra uomini e donne.

And all the people also cut down each one his bough, and go after Abimelech, and set at the high place, and burn by these the high place with fire, and also all the men of the tower of Shechem die, about a thousand men and women.

50 P oi Abimelek andò a Thebets, cinse d'assedio Thebets e la espugnò.

And Abimelech goeth unto Thebez, and encampeth against Thebez, and captureth it,

51 O r in mezzo alla città c'era una torre fortificata, dove si rifugiarono tutti gli abitanti della città, uomini e donne; si rinchiusero dentro e salirono sul tetto della torre.

and a strong tower hath been in the midst of the city, and thither flee do all the men and the women, and all the masters of the city, and they shut behind them, and go up on the roof of the tower.

52 C osì Abimelek giunse ai piedi della torre e l'attaccò; si avvicinò quindi alla porta della torre per appiccarvi il fuoco.

And Abimelech cometh unto the tower, and fighteth against it, and draweth nigh unto the opening of the tower to burn it with fire,

53 M a una donna gettò giú la parte superiore di una macina sulla testa di Abimelek e gli spezzò il cranio.

and a certain woman doth cast a piece of a rider on the head of Abimelech, and breaketh his skull,

54 E gli chiamò subito il giovane che gli portava le armi, e gli disse: Tira fuori la spada e uccidimi, perché non si dica: "L'ha ucciso una donna!"». Così il giovane lo trafisse, ed egli morì.

and he calleth hastily unto the young man bearing his weapons, and saith to him, `Draw thy sword, and thou hast put me to death, lest they say of me -- A woman slew him;' and his young man pierced him through, and he dieth.

55 Q uando gli Israeliti videro che Abimelek era morto se ne andarono ciascuno a casa sua.

And the men of Israel see that Abimelech dead, and go each one to his place;

56 C osì DIO fece ricadere su Abimelek il male che egli aveva fatto contro suo padre, uccidendo settanta suoi fratelli.

and God turneth back the evil of Abimelech which he did to his father to slay his seventy brethren;

57 D IO fece anche ricadere sul capo della gente di Sichem tutto il male fatto; così su di loro si avverò la maledizione di Jotham, figlio di Jerubbaal.

and all the evil of the men of Shechem hath God turned back on their head, and come unto them doth the cursing of Jotham son of Jerubbaal.
