1 V enuto il mattino, tutti i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo, tennero consiglio contro Gesú, per farlo morire.

And morning having come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so as to put him to death;

2 E , legatolo, lo condussero via e lo consegnarono nelle mani del governatore Ponzio Pilato.

and having bound him, they did lead away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.

3 A llora Giuda, che lo aveva tradito, vedendo che Gesú era stato condannato si pentí e riportò i trenta sicli d'argento ai capi dei sacerdoti e agli anziani,

Then Judas -- he who delivered him up -- having seen that he was condemned, having repented, brought back the thirty silverlings to the chief priests, and to the elders, saying,

4 d icendo: «Ho peccato, tradendo il sangue innocente». Ma essi dissero: «Che c'importa? Pensaci tu!».

`I did sin, having delivered up innocent blood;' and they said, `What -- to us? thou shalt see!'

5 E d egli, gettati i sicli d'argento nel tempio, si allontanò e andò a impiccarsi.

and having cast down the silverlings in the sanctuary, he departed, and having gone away, he did strangle himself.

6 M a i capi dei sacerdoti presero quei denari e dissero: «Non è lecito metterli nel tesoro del tempio, perché è prezzo di sangue».

And the chief priests having taken the silverlings, said, `It is not lawful to put them to the treasury, seeing it is the price of blood;'

7 E tenuto consiglio, comprarono con quel denaro il campo del vasaio, come luogo di sepoltura per i forestieri.

and having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter, for the burial of strangers;

8 P erciò quel campo è stato chiamato sino ad oggi: "Campo di sangue"

therefore was that field called, `Field of blood,' unto this day.

9 A llora si adempí quanto era stato detto dal profeta Geremia che disse: «E presero i trenta pezzi d'argento, il prezzo di colui che fu valutato, come è stato valutato dai figli d'Israele;

Then was fulfilled that spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, `And I took the thirty silverlings, the price of him who hath been priced, whom they of the sons of Israel did price,

10 e li versarono per il campo del vasaio, come mi ordinò il Signore».

and gave them for the field of the potter, as the Lord did appoint to me.'

11 O ra Gesú comparve davanti al governatore; e il governatore lo interrogò dicendo: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?». E Gesú gli disse: «Tu lo dici!».

And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor did question him, saying, `Art thou the king of the Jews!' And Jesus said to him, `Thou sayest.'

12 A ccusato poi dai capi dei sacerdoti e dagli anziani, non rispose nulla.

And in his being accused by the chief priests and the elders, he did not answer any thing,

13 A llora Pilato gli disse: «Non odi quante cose testimoniano contro di te?».

then saith Pilate to him, `Dost thou not hear how many things they witness against thee?'

14 M a egli non gli rispose neppure una parola, tanto che il governatore ne fu grandemente meravigliato.

And he did not answer him, not even to one word, so that the governor did wonder greatly.

15 O ra il governatore, in occasione di ogni festività, aveva l'usanza di rilasciare alla folla un prigioniero, come essi volevano.

And at the feast the governor had been accustomed to release one to the multitude, a prisoner, whom they willed,

16 A vevano in quel tempo un ben noto prigioniero, di nome Barabba.

and they had then a noted prisoner, called Barabbas,

17 Q uando si furono radunati, Pilato chiese loro: «Chi volete che vi liberi, Barabba o Gesú, detto Cristo?».

they therefore having been gathered together, Pilate said to them, `Whom will ye I shall release to you? Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?'

18 P erché egli sapeva bene che glielo avevano consegnato per invidia.

for he had known that because of envy they had delivered him up.

19 O ra, mentre egli sedeva in tribunale, sua moglie gli mandò a dire: «Non avere nulla a che fare con quel giusto, perché oggi ho molto sofferto in sogno, per causa sua».

And as he is sitting on the tribunal, his wife sent unto him, saying, `Nothing -- to thee and to that righteous one, for many things did I suffer to-day in a dream because of him.'

20 M a i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani persuasero le folle a chiedere Barabba, e a far morire Gesú.

And the chief priests and the elders did persuade the multitudes that they might ask for themselves Barabbas, and might destroy Jesus;

21 E il governatore, replicando, disse loro: «Quale dei due volete che vi liberi?». Essi dissero: «Barabba!».

and the governor answering said to them, `Which of the two will ye I shall release to you?' And they said, `Barabbas.'

22 P ilato disse loro: «Che farò dunque di Gesú, detto Cristo?». Tutti gli dissero: «Sia crocifisso!».

Pilate saith to them, `What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?' They all say to him, `Let be crucified!'

23 M a il governatore disse: «Eppure, che male ha fatto?». Ma essi gridavano ancora piú forte: «Sia crocifisso!».

And the governor said, `Why, what evil did he?' and they were crying out the more, saying, `Let be crucified.'

24 A llora Pilato, vedendo che non otteneva nulla, ma che anzi il tumulto cresceva sempre piú, prese dell'acqua e si lavò le mani davanti alla folla, dicendo: «Io sono innocente del sangue di questo giusto; pensateci voi».

And Pilate having seen that it profiteth nothing, but rather a tumult is made, having taken water, he did wash the hands before the multitude, saying, `I am innocent from the blood of this righteous one; ye -- ye shall see;'

25 E tutto il popolo rispondendo disse: «Sia il suo sangue sopra di noi e sopra i nostri figli!».

and all the people answering said, `His blood upon us, and upon our children!'

26 A llora egli liberò loro Barabba; e dopo aver fatto flagellare Gesú, lo diede loro, perché fosse crocifisso.

Then did he release to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered up that he may be crucified;

27 A llora i soldati del governatore, avendo condotto Gesú nel pretorio, radunarono attorno a lui tutta la coorte.

then the soldiers of the governor having taken Jesus to the Praetorium, did gather to him all the band;

28 E , spogliatolo, gli misero addosso un manto scarlatto.

and having unclothed him, they put around him a crimson cloak,

29 E , intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo e gli misero una canna nella mano destra; e, inginocchiandosi davanti a lui, lo schernivano dicendo: «Salve, o re dei Giudei!».

and having plaited him a crown out of thorns they put on his head, and a reed in his right hand, and having kneeled before him, they were mocking him, saying, `Hail, the king of the Jews.'

30 P oi, sputandogli a addosso, presero la canna e con quella lo percotevano sul capo.

And having spit on him, they took the reed, and were smiting on his head;

31 E dopo averlo schernito, lo spogliarono di quel manto e lo rivestirono delle sue vesti; poi lo condussero via per crocifiggerlo.

and when they had mocked him, they took off from him the cloak, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify.

32 O ra, uscendo, incontrarono un uomo di Cirene, di nome Simone, che costrinsero a portare la croce di Gesú.

And coming forth, they found a man, a Cyrenian, by name Simon: him they impressed that he might bear his cross;

33 E , giunti sul luogo detto Golgota, che vuol dire: il luogo del teschio

and having come to a place called Golgotha, that is called Place of a Skull,

34 g li diedero da bere dell'aceto mescolato con fiele; ma egli, avendolo assaggiato non volle berne.

they gave him to drink vinegar mixed with gall, and having tasted, he would not drink.

35 D opo averlo crocifisso, si spartirono le sue vesti tirando a sorte, affinché si adempisse ciò che fu detto dal profeta: «Hanno diviso tra loro le mie vesti e sulla mia tunica hanno tirato a sorte».

And having crucified him, they divided his garments, casting a lot, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken by the prophet, `They divided my garments to themselves, and over my vesture they cast a lot;'

36 P ostisi quindi a sedere, gli facevano la guardia.

and sitting down, they were watching him there,

37 A l di sopra del suo capo, posero anche la motivazione scritta della sua condanna: «COSTUI E' GESU

and they put up over his head, his accusation written, `This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.'

38 A llora furono crocifissi con lui due ladroni: uno a destra e l'altro a sinistra.

Then crucified with him are two robbers, one on the right hand, and one on the left,

39 E coloro che passavano di là lo ingiuriavano scuotendo il capo,

and those passing by were speaking evil of him, wagging their heads,

40 e dicendo: «Tu che distruggi il tempio e in tre giorni lo ricostruisci, salva te stesso, se sei il Figlio di Dio, scendi giú dalla croce!».

and saying, `Thou that art throwing down the sanctuary, and in three days building, save thyself; if Son thou art of God, come down from the cross.'

41 S imilmente, anche i capi dei sacerdoti, con gli scribi e gli anziani facendosi beffe, dicevano:

And in like manner also the chief priests mocking, with the scribes and elders, said,

42 « Egli ha salvato gli altri e non può salvare se stesso, se è il re d'Israele, scenda ora giú dalla croce e noi crederemo in lui;

`Others he saved; himself he is not able to save! If he be King of Israel, let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe him;

43 e gli si è confidato in Dio; lo liberi ora, se veramente lo gradisce, poiché ha detto: io sono il Figlio di Dio.

he hath trusted on God, let Him now deliver him, if He wish him, because he said -- Son of God I am;'

44 A nche i ladroni crocifissi con lui lo ingiuriavano allo stesso modo.

with the same also the robbers, who were crucified with him, were reproaching him.

45 D all'ora sesta fino all'ora nona si fecero tenebre su tutto il paese.

And from the sixth hour darkness came over all the land unto the ninth hour,

46 V erso l'ora nona, Gesú gridò con gran voce dicendo: «Elì, Elì, lammà sabactanì?». Cioè: «Dio mio, Dio mio perché mi hai abbandonato?».

and about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a great voice, saying, `Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, `My God, my God, why didst Thou forsake me?'

47 E alcuni fra i presenti, udito questo, dicevano: «Costui chiama Elia».

And certain of those standing there having heard, said -- `Elijah he doth call;'

48 E in quell'istante uno di loro corse, prese una spugna, l'inzuppò d'aceto e, infilatala in cima ad una canna, gli diede da bere.

and immediately, one of them having run, and having taken a spunge, having filled with vinegar, and having put on a reed, was giving him to drink,

49 M a gli altri dicevano: «Lascia, vediamo se viene Elia a salvarlo».

but the rest said, `Let alone, let us see if Elijah doth come -- about to save him.'

50 E Gesú, avendo di nuovo gridato con gran voce, rese lo spirito.

And Jesus having again cried with a great voice, yielded the spirit;

51 E d ecco, il velo del tempio si squarciò in due, da cima a fondo; la terra tremò e le rocce si spaccarono;

and lo, the vail of the sanctuary was rent in two from top unto bottom, and the earth did quake, and the rocks were rent,

52 i sepolcri si aprirono e molti corpi dei santi, che dormivano, risuscitarono;

and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who have fallen asleep, arose,

53 e , usciti dai sepolcri dopo la risurrezione di Gesú, entrarono nella santa città e apparvero a molti.

and having come forth out of the tombs after his rising, they went into the holy city, and appeared to many.

54 O ra il centurione e quelli che con lui facevano la guardia a Gesú, veduto il terremoto e le cose accadute, temettero grandemente e dissero: «Veramente costui era il Figlio di Dio!».

And the centurion, and those with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were exceedingly afraid, saying, `Truly this was God's Son.'

55 E rano là presenti anche molte donne che osservavano da lontano, esse avevano seguito Gesú dalla Galilea per servirlo;

And there were there many women beholding from afar, who did follow Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,

56 f ra di loro c'era Maria Maddalena. Maria madre di Giacomo e di Iose; e la madre dei figli di Zebedeo.

among whom was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and of Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

57 P oi verso sera giunse un uomo ricco di Arimatea, di nome Giuseppe, il quale era pure discepolo di Gesú.

And evening having come, there came a rich man, from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was discipled to Jesus,

58 C ostui si presentò a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesú. Allora Pilato comandò che il corpo gli fosse consegnato.

he having gone near to Pilate, asked for himself the body of Jesus; then Pilate commanded the body to be given back.

59 E Giuseppe, preso il corpo, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo pulito;

And having taken the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen,

60 e lo mise nel suo sepolcro nuovo, che egli si era fatto scavare nella roccia; poi, dopo aver rotolato una grande pietra all'ingresso del sepolcro, se ne andò.

and laid it in his new tomb, that he hewed in the rock, and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away;

61 O r Maria Maddalena e l'altra Maria stavano là, sedute di fronte al sepolcro.

and there were there Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over-against the sepulchre.

62 E il giorno seguente, che era quello successivo alla Preparazione, i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei si riunirono presso Pilato,

And on the morrow that is after the preparation, were gathered together the chief priests, and the Pharisees, unto Pilate,

63 d icendo: «Signore, ci siamo ricordati che quel seduttore, quando era ancora in vita, disse: "Dopo tre giorni io risusciterò".

saying, `Sir, we have remembered that that deceiver said while yet living, After three days I do rise;

64 O rdina dunque che il sepolcro sia ben custodito fino al terzo giorno, che talora non vengano i suoi discepoli di notte a rubare il corpo e poi dicano al popolo: "egli è risuscitato dai morti" cosí l'ultimo inganno sarebbe peggiore del primo».

command, then, the sepulchre to be made secure till the third day, lest his disciples, having come by night, may steal him away, and may say to the people, He rose from the dead, and the last deceit shall be worse than the first.'

65 M a Pilato disse loro: «Voi avete un corpo di guardia; andate, e assicurate il sepolcro, come vi sembra meglio».

And Pilate said to them, `Ye have a watch, go away, make secure -- as ye have known;'

66 E ssi dunque andarono e assicurarono il sepolcro e, oltre a mettere la guardia, sigillarono la pietra.

and they, having gone, did make the sepulchre secure, having sealed the stone, together with the watch.
