1 Q uando Mardocheo seppe tutto ciò che era stato fatto, si stracciò le vesti, si coprí di sacco e di cenere e uscí per la città, mandando alte ed amare grida;

And Mordecai hath known all that hath been done, and Mordecai rendeth his garments, and putteth on sackcloth and ashes, and goeth forth into the midst of the city and crieth -- a cry loud and bitter,

2 e giunse fin davanti alla porta del re, perché non era permesso entrare per la porta del re a nessuno coperto di sacco.

and he cometh in unto the front of the gate of the king, but none is to come in unto the gate of the king with a sackcloth-garment.

3 I n ogni provincia, dove giunsero l'ordine del re e il suo decreto, ci fu grande cordoglio fra i Giudei, con digiuno, pianti e lamenti; e molti si coprirono di sacco e di cenere.

And in every province and province, the place where the word of the king, even his law, is coming, a great mourning have the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and lamenting: sackcloth and ashes are spread for many.

4 L e donzelle di Ester e i suoi eunuchi vennero a riferirle la cosa, e la regina ne fu grandemente angosciata; quindi mandò vesti a Mardocheo, perché se le mettesse e si togliesse di dosso il sacco, ma egli non le accettò.

And young women of Esther come in and her eunuchs, and declare to her, and the queen is exceedingly pained, and sendeth garments to clothe Mordecai, and to turn aside his sackcloth from off him, and he hath not received.

5 A llora Ester chiamò Hathak, uno degli eunuchi del re da lui assegnato a prestarle servizio, e gli ordinò di andare da Mardocheo per sapere che cosa lo affliggeva e perché.

And Esther calleth to Hatach, of the eunuchs of the king, whom he hath stationed before her, and giveth him a charge for Mordecai, to know what this, and wherefore this.

6 H athak dunque si recò da Mardocheo sulla piazza della città, che si trovava di fronte alla porta del re.

And Hatach goeth out unto Mordecai, unto a broad place of the city, that before the gate of the king,

7 M ardocheo gli raccontò tutto ciò che gli era successo e accennò pure alla somma di denaro che Haman aveva promesso di versare al tesoro reale per ottenere la distruzione dei Giudei;

and Mordecai declareth to him all that hath met him, and the explanation of the money that Haman said to weigh to the treasuries of the king for the Jews, to destroy them,

8 g li diede pure una copia del testo del decreto che era stato promulgato a Susa per il loro sterminio, affinché lo mostrasse a Ester, glielo spiegasse e le ordinasse di andare dal re per supplicarlo e intercedere davanti a lui in favore del suo popolo.

and the copy of the writing of the law that had been given in Shushan to destroy them he hath given to him, to shew Esther, and to declare to her, and to lay a charge on her to go in unto the king, to make supplication to him, and to seek from before him, for her people.

9 C osí Hathak ritornò da Ester e le riferí le parole di Mardocheo.

And Hatach cometh in and declareth to Esther the words of Mordecai,

10 A llora Ester parlò a Hathak e gli ordinò di andare a dire a Mardocheo:

and Esther speaketh to Hatach, and chargeth him for Mordecai:

11 « Tutti i servi del re e il popolo delle sue province sanno che qualsiasi uomo o donna entra nel cortile interno per andare dal re, senza essere stato chiamato deve essere messo a morte, in base a una particolare legge, a meno che il re non stenda verso di lui il suo scettro d'oro; solo cosí egli avrà salva la vita. E sono già trenta giorni che non sono stata chiamata per andare dal re».

`All servants of the king, and people of the provinces of the king, do know that any man and woman, who cometh in unto the king, unto the inner court, who is not called -- one law his to put to death, apart from him to whom the king holdeth out the golden sceptre, then he hath lived; and I -- I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.'

12 C osí riferirono a Mardocheo le parole di Ester,

And they declare to Mordecai the words of Esther,

13 e Mardocheo fece rispondere a Ester: «Non pensare di scampare tu sola fra tutti i Giudei, perché li trovi nel palazzo del re.

and Mordecai speaketh to send back unto Esther: `Do not think in thy soul to be delivered the house of the king, more than all the Jews,

14 P oiché se in questo momento tu taci, soccorso e liberazione sorgeranno per i Giudei da un'altra parte; ma tu e la casa di tuo padre perirete. Inoltre chi sa se è proprio per un tempo come questo che tu sei pervenuta alla regalità?».

but if thou keep entirely silent at this time, respite and deliverance remaineth to the Jews from another place, and thou and the house of thy fathers are destroyed; and who knoweth whether for a time like this thou hast come to the kingdom?'

15 A llora Ester ordinò di rispondere a Mardocheo cosí:

And Esther speaketh to send back unto Mordecai:

16 « Va raduna tutti i Giudei che si trovano a Susa, e digiunate per me; state senza né mangiare né bere per tre giorni, notte e giorno. Anch'io con le mie donzelle digiunerò nello stesso modo; poi entrerò dal re, sebbene ciò sia contro la legge; e se dovrò perire, perirò».

`Go, gather all the Jews who are found in Shushan, and fast for me, and do not eat nor drink three days, by night and by day; also I and my young women do fast likewise, and so I go in unto the king, that not according to law, and when I have perished -- I have perished.'

17 M ardocheo se ne andò e fece tutto ciò che Ester gli aveva ordinato.

And Mordecai passeth on, and doth according to all that Esther hath charged upon him.
