1 O r Satana si levò contro Israele, e istigò Davide a fare il censimento d'Israele.

And there standeth up an adversary against Israel, and persuadeth David to number Israel,

2 C osí Davide disse a Joab e ai capi del popolo: «Andate, fate il censimento degli Israeliti da Beer-Sceba, a Dan; quindi presentatemi il rapporto perché conosca il loro numero».

And David saith unto Joab, and unto the heads of the people, `Go, number Israel from Beer-Sheba even unto Dan, and bring unto me, and I know their number.'

3 J oab rispose: «L'Eterno moltiplichi il suo popolo cento volte tanto. Ma, o re mio signore, non sono forse tutti servi del mio signore? Perche il mio signore richiede questo? Perché rendere Israele colpevole?».

And Joab saith, `Jehovah doth add to His people as they are a hundred times; are they not, my lord, O king, all of them to my lord for servants? why doth my lord seek this? why is he for a cause of guilt to Israel?'

4 M a la richiesta del re prevalse contro Joab. Perciò Joab partí, percorse tutto Israele e tornò quindi a Gerusalemme.

And the word of the king severe against Joab, and Joab goeth out, and goeth up and down in all Israel, and cometh in to Jerusalem.

5 J oab consegnò a Davide il numero del censimento del popolo: in tutto Israele c'erano unmilionecentomila uomini atti a maneggiare la spada, e in Giuda quattrocentosettantamila uomini atti a maneggiare la spada.

And Joab giveth the account of the numbering of the people unto David, and all Israel is a thousand thousand and a hundred thousand, each drawing sword, and Judah four hundred and seventy thousand, each drawing sword.

6 M a nel censimento di questi Joab non incluse Levi e Beniamino, perché la richiesta del re era per lui abominevole.

And Levi and Benjamin he hath not numbered in their midst, for the word of the king was abominable with Joab.

7 Q uesta cosa dispiacque a DIO, perciò colpí Israele.

And it is evil in the eyes of God concerning this thing, and He smiteth Israel,

8 C osí Davide disse a DIO: «Ho gravemente peccato facendo questa cosa; ma ora, ti prego, rimuovi l'iniquità del tuo servo, perché ho agito con grande stoltezza».

and David saith unto God, `I have sinned exceedingly, in that I have done this thing; and now, cause to pass away, I pray Thee, the iniquity of Thy servant, for I have acted very foolishly.'

9 A llora l'Eterno parlò a Gad, il veggente di Davide, dicendo:

And Jehovah speaketh unto Gad, seer of David, saying:

10 « Va' a dire a Davide: "Cosí dice l'Eterno: lo ti propongo tre cose: scegliti una di queste, e io la eseguirò per te"».

`Go, and thou hast spoken unto David, saying, Thus said Jehovah, Three -- I am stretching out unto thee; choose for thee one of these, and I do to thee.'

11 G ad andò da Davide e gli disse: «Cosí dice l'Eterno: Scegliti

And Gad cometh in unto David, and saith to him, `Thus said Jehovah, Take for thee --

12 o tre anni di carestia, oppure tre mesi di distruzione davanti ai tuoi avversari, durante i quali la spada dei tuoi nemici ti raggiungerà, oppure tre giorni di spada dell'Eterno, ossia la peste nel paese, durante i quali l'angelo, dell'Eterno porterà la distruzione in tutto il territorio d'Israele. Ora fammi sapere la risposta che devo riferire a colui che mi ha mandato».

either for three years -- famine, or three months to be consumed from the face of thine adversaries, even the sword of thine enemies to overtake, or three days the sword of Jehovah, even pestilence in the land, and a messenger of Jehovah destroying in all the border of Israel; and now, see; what word do I return to Him who is sending me?'

13 D avide disse a Gad: «Io sono in una grande angoscia! Deh, che io cada nelle mani dell'Eterno, perché le sue compassioni sono grandissime, ma che non cada nelle mani degli uomini!». L'erezione dell'altare e l'offerta dei sacrifici da parte di Davide pone fine alla calamità

And David saith unto Gad, `I am greatly distressed, let me fall, I pray thee, into the hand of Jehovah, for very many His mercies, and into the hand of man let me not fall.'

14 C osí l'Eterno mandò la peste in Israele, e morirono settantamila Israeliti.

And Jehovah giveth a pestilence in Israel, and there fall of Israel seventy thousand men,

15 D IO mandò pure un angelo a Gerusalemme per distruggerla; ma, mentre egli si apprestava a distruggere, l'Eterno volse lo sguardo, si pentí della calamità inflitta e disse all'angelo che distruggeva: «Ora basta! Trattieni la tua mano!». L'angelo dell'Eterno stava in piedi presso l'aia di Ornan, il Gebuseo.

and God sendeth a messenger to Jerusalem to destroy it, and as he is destroying Jehovah hath seen, and is comforted concerning the evil, and saith to the messenger who destroying, `Enough, now, cease thy hand.' And the messenger of Jehovah is standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite,

16 D avide, alzati gli occhi, vide l'angelo dell'Eterno che stava fra terra e cielo con in mano una spada sguainata, tesa sopra Gerusalemme. Allora Davide e gli anziani, vestiti di sacco, caddero con la faccia a terra.

and David lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the messenger of Jehovah standing between the earth and the heavens, and his sword drawn in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem, and David falleth, and the elders, covered with sackcloth, on their faces.

17 D avide disse a DIO: «Non sono forse stato io a ordinare il censimento del popolo? Sono stato io a peccare e a fare il male, ma costoro, il gregge, che cosa hanno fatto? Ti prego, o Eterno, DIO mio, si volga la tua mano contro di me e contro la casa di mio padre, ma non colpisca il tuo popolo con questa calamità».

And David saith unto God, `Did not I -- I say to number the people? Yea, I it who have sinned, and done great evil: and these, the flock, what did they? O Jehovah, my God, let, I pray Thee, Thy hand be on me, and on the house of my father, and not on Thy people -- to be plagued.'

18 A llora l'angelo dell'Eterno ordinò a Gad di dire a Davide che Davide salisse ad erigere un altare, all'Eterno nell'aia di Ornan, il Gebuseo.

And the messenger of Jehovah spake unto Gad, saying for David, `Surely David doth go up to raise an altar to Jehovah in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.'

19 C osí Davide salí secondo la parola che Gad aveva pronunziato nel nome dell'Eterno.

And David goeth up by the word of Gad, that he spake in the name of Jehovah.

20 O rnan si voltò e vide l'angelo; perciò i suoi quattro figli che erano con lui si nascosero, ma Ornan continuò a battere il grano.

And Ornan turneth back, and seeth the messenger, and his four sons with him, hiding themselves, and Ornan is threshing wheat.

21 Q uando Davide giunse presso Ornan, Ornan guardò e riconobbe Davide; uscí quindi dall'aia e si prostrò davanti a Davide con la faccia a terra.

And David cometh in unto Ornan, and Ornan looketh attentively, and seeth David, and goeth out from the threshing-floor, and boweth himself to David -- face to the earth.

22 A llora Davide disse a Ornan: «Cedimi l'area dell'aia, perché vi costruisca un altare all'Eterno; cedimelo per tutto il suo valore, affinché la calamità cessi di infierire sul popolo».

And David saith unto Ornan, `Give to me the place of the threshing-floor, and I build in it an altar to Jehovah; for full silver give it to me, and the plague is restrained from the people.'

23 O rnan disse a Davide: «Prenditelo, e Il re, mio signore, faccia ciò che meglio gli pare; ecco, lo ti do anche i buoi per gli olocausti, gli attrezzi da trebbiare per legna e il grano per l'oblazione di cibo, ti do tutto».

And Ornan saith unto David, `Take to thee -- and my lord the king doth that which is good in his eyes: see, I have given the oxen for burnt-offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for a present; the whole I have given.'

24 M a il re Davide disse a Ornan: «No! Io lo voglio acquistare per l'intero suo valore, perché non prenderò per l'Eterno ciò che appartiene a te e non offrirò un olocausto che non mi costi nulla».

And king David saith to Ornan, `Nay, for I surely buy for full silver; for I do not lift up that which is thine to Jehovah, so as to offer a burnt-offering without cost.'

25 C osí Davide diede a Ornan come prezzo del terreno il peso di seicento sicli, d'oro.

And David giveth to Ornan for the place shekels of gold weight six hundred;

26 Q uindi Davide vi costruí un altare all'Eterno, offrí olocausti e sacrifici di ringraziamento e invocò l'Eterno, che gli rispose con il fuoco, che discese dal cielo sull'altare dell'olocausto.

and David buildeth there an altar to Jehovah, and offereth burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and calleth unto Jehovah, and He answereth him with fire from the heavens on the altar of the burnt-offering.

27 A llora l'Eterno comandò all'angelo, di rimettere la sua spada nel fodero.

And Jehovah saith to the messenger, and he turneth back his sword unto its sheath.

28 I n quel tempo Davide, vedendo che l'Eterno lo aveva esaudito nell'aia d'Ornan, il Gebuseo, vi offrí dei sacrifici.

At that time when David seeth that Jehovah hath answered him in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificeth there;

29 I nfatti il tabernacolo dell'Eterno che Mosè aveva costruito nel deserto e l'altare degli olocausti si trovavano allora sull'alto luogo di Gabaon,

and the tabernacle of Jehovah that Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt-offering, at that time in a high place, in Gibeon;

30 M a Davide non poteva andare davanti a quell'altare a consultare DIO, perché si era spaventato davanti alla spada dell'angelo dell'Eterno.

and David is not able to go before it to seek God, for he hath been afraid because of the sword of the messenger of Jehovah.
