1 Y se levantó Satanás contra Israel e incitó a David a hacer un censo de Israel.

And there standeth up an adversary against Israel, and persuadeth David to number Israel,

2 D ijo, pues, David a Joab y a los jefes del pueblo: Id, contad a Israel desde Beerseba hasta Dan, y traedme el resultado para que yo sepa el número de ellos.

And David saith unto Joab, and unto the heads of the people, `Go, number Israel from Beer-Sheba even unto Dan, and bring unto me, and I know their number.'

3 P ero Joab dijo: Añada el Señor a su pueblo cien veces más de lo que son. Mas, oh rey, señor mío, ¿no son todos ellos siervos de mi señor? ¿Por qué procura esto mi señor? ¿Por qué ha de ser él motivo de culpa para Israel?

And Joab saith, `Jehovah doth add to His people as they are a hundred times; are they not, my lord, O king, all of them to my lord for servants? why doth my lord seek this? why is he for a cause of guilt to Israel?'

4 S in embargo, la palabra del rey prevaleció contra Joab. Salió, pues, Joab y recorrió todo Israel, y volvió a Jerusalén.

And the word of the king severe against Joab, and Joab goeth out, and goeth up and down in all Israel, and cometh in to Jerusalem.

5 Y Joab dio a David el total del censo de todo el pueblo. Y en todo Israel había un millón cien mil hombres que sacaban espada; y en Judá había cuatrocientos setenta mil hombres que sacaban espada.

And Joab giveth the account of the numbering of the people unto David, and all Israel is a thousand thousand and a hundred thousand, each drawing sword, and Judah four hundred and seventy thousand, each drawing sword.

6 P ero entre ellos no hizo un censo de Leví ni de Benjamín, porque la orden del rey era detestable para Joab.

And Levi and Benjamin he hath not numbered in their midst, for the word of the king was abominable with Joab.

7 T ambién el censo desagradó a Dios, e hirió a Israel.

And it is evil in the eyes of God concerning this thing, and He smiteth Israel,

8 E ntonces dijo David a Dios: He pecado gravemente al hacer esto. Pero ahora te ruego que quites la iniquidad de tu siervo, porque he obrado muy neciamente.

and David saith unto God, `I have sinned exceedingly, in that I have done this thing; and now, cause to pass away, I pray Thee, the iniquity of Thy servant, for I have acted very foolishly.'

9 Y el Señor habló a Gad, vidente de David, diciendo:

And Jehovah speaketh unto Gad, seer of David, saying:

10 V e y habla a David, y dile: “Así dice el Señor: ‘Te propongo tres cosas; escoge para ti una de ellas, para que yo te la haga.’”

`Go, and thou hast spoken unto David, saying, Thus said Jehovah, Three -- I am stretching out unto thee; choose for thee one of these, and I do to thee.'

11 E ntonces vino Gad a David y le dijo: Así dice el Señor: “Escoge para ti:

And Gad cometh in unto David, and saith to him, `Thus said Jehovah, Take for thee --

12 t res años de hambre, o tres meses de derrota delante de tus adversarios mientras te alcanza la espada de tus enemigos, o tres días de la espada del Señor, esto es, la pestilencia en la tierra y el ángel del Señor haciendo estragos por todo el territorio de Israel.” Ahora pues, considera qué respuesta he de llevar al que me envió.

either for three years -- famine, or three months to be consumed from the face of thine adversaries, even the sword of thine enemies to overtake, or three days the sword of Jehovah, even pestilence in the land, and a messenger of Jehovah destroying in all the border of Israel; and now, see; what word do I return to Him who is sending me?'

13 R espondió David a Gad: Estoy muy angustiado. Te ruego que me dejes caer en manos del Señor, porque muy grandes son sus misericordias; pero no caiga yo en manos de hombre.

And David saith unto Gad, `I am greatly distressed, let me fall, I pray thee, into the hand of Jehovah, for very many His mercies, and into the hand of man let me not fall.'

14 Y el Señor envió pestilencia sobre Israel, y cayeron setenta mil hombres de Israel.

And Jehovah giveth a pestilence in Israel, and there fall of Israel seventy thousand men,

15 Y envió Dios un ángel a Jerusalén para destruirla; pero cuando estaba a punto de destruir la, miró el Señor y sintió pesar por la calamidad, y dijo al ángel destructor: Basta, detén ahora tu mano. Y el ángel del Señor estaba junto a la era de Ornán jebuseo.

and God sendeth a messenger to Jerusalem to destroy it, and as he is destroying Jehovah hath seen, and is comforted concerning the evil, and saith to the messenger who destroying, `Enough, now, cease thy hand.' And the messenger of Jehovah is standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite,

16 Y alzando David sus ojos, vio al ángel del Señor que estaba entre la tierra y el cielo, con una espada desenvainada en su mano, extendida sobre Jerusalén. Entonces David y los ancianos, vestidos de cilicio, cayeron sobre sus rostros.

and David lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the messenger of Jehovah standing between the earth and the heavens, and his sword drawn in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem, and David falleth, and the elders, covered with sackcloth, on their faces.

17 Y David dijo a Dios: ¿No soy yo el que ordenó enumerar al pueblo? Ciertamente yo soy el que ha pecado y obrado muy perversamente, pero estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho? Oh Señor, Dios mío, te ruego que tu mano sea contra mí y contra la casa de mi padre, pero no contra tu pueblo, para que no haya plaga entre ellos.

And David saith unto God, `Did not I -- I say to number the people? Yea, I it who have sinned, and done great evil: and these, the flock, what did they? O Jehovah, my God, let, I pray Thee, Thy hand be on me, and on the house of my father, and not on Thy people -- to be plagued.'

18 L uego el ángel del Señor ordenó a Gad que dijera a David que subiera y edificara un altar al Señor en la era de Ornán jebuseo.

And the messenger of Jehovah spake unto Gad, saying for David, `Surely David doth go up to raise an altar to Jehovah in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.'

19 D avid subió según la palabra que Gad había hablado en nombre del Señor.

And David goeth up by the word of Gad, that he spake in the name of Jehovah.

20 Y volviéndose Ornán, vio al ángel, y sus cuatro hijos que estaban con él se escondieron. Y Ornán estaba trillando trigo.

And Ornan turneth back, and seeth the messenger, and his four sons with him, hiding themselves, and Ornan is threshing wheat.

21 Y cuando David llegó junto a Ornán, éste miró, y al ver a David, salió de la era y se postró ante David rostro en tierra.

And David cometh in unto Ornan, and Ornan looketh attentively, and seeth David, and goeth out from the threshing-floor, and boweth himself to David -- face to the earth.

22 E ntonces David dijo a Ornán: Dame el lugar de esta era, para que edifique en él un altar al Señor; me lo darás por su justo precio, para que se retire la plaga del pueblo.

And David saith unto Ornan, `Give to me the place of the threshing-floor, and I build in it an altar to Jehovah; for full silver give it to me, and the plague is restrained from the people.'

23 Y Ornán dijo a David: Tóma lo para ti, y que mi señor el rey haga lo que sea bueno ante sus ojos. Mira, daré los bueyes para holocaustos y los trillos para leña y el trigo para la ofrenda de cereal; lo daré todo.

And Ornan saith unto David, `Take to thee -- and my lord the king doth that which is good in his eyes: see, I have given the oxen for burnt-offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for a present; the whole I have given.'

24 P ero el rey David dijo a Ornán: No, sino que ciertamente lo compraré por su justo precio; porque no tomaré para el Señor lo que es tuyo, ni ofreceré un holocausto que no me cueste nada.

And king David saith to Ornan, `Nay, for I surely buy for full silver; for I do not lift up that which is thine to Jehovah, so as to offer a burnt-offering without cost.'

25 Y David dio a Ornán el peso de seiscientos siclos de oro por el lugar.

And David giveth to Ornan for the place shekels of gold weight six hundred;

26 E ntonces David edificó allí un altar al Señor, y ofreció holocaustos y ofrendas de paz. E invocó al Señor, y El le respondió con fuego del cielo sobre el altar del holocausto.

and David buildeth there an altar to Jehovah, and offereth burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and calleth unto Jehovah, and He answereth him with fire from the heavens on the altar of the burnt-offering.

27 Y el Señor ordenó al ángel, y éste volvió su espada a la vaina.

And Jehovah saith to the messenger, and he turneth back his sword unto its sheath.

28 E n aquel tiempo, viendo David que el Señor le había respondido en la era de Ornán jebuseo, ofreció sacrificio allí;

At that time when David seeth that Jehovah hath answered him in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificeth there;

29 p orque el tabernáculo del Señor que Moisés había hecho en el desierto y el altar del holocausto estaban en aquel tiempo en el lugar alto en Gabaón.

and the tabernacle of Jehovah that Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt-offering, at that time in a high place, in Gibeon;

30 P ero David no pudo ir allá, delante de él, para consultar a Dios, porque estaba aterrado a causa de la espada del ángel del Señor.

and David is not able to go before it to seek God, for he hath been afraid because of the sword of the messenger of Jehovah.
