1 H astiado estoy de mi vida: daré rienda suelta a mi queja, hablaré en la amargura de mi alma.

My soul hath been weary of my life, I leave off my talking to myself, I speak in the bitterness of my soul.

2 L e diré a Dios: “No me condenes, hazme saber por qué contiendes conmigo.

I say unto God, `Do not condemn me, Let me know why Thou dost strive me.

3 “ ¿Es justo para ti oprimir, rechazar la obra de tus manos, y mirar con favor los designios de los malos ?

Is it good for Thee that Thou dost oppress? That Thou despisest the labour of Thy hands, And on the counsel of the wicked hast shone?

4 “ ¿Acaso tienes tú ojos de carne, o ves como el hombre ve ?

Eyes of flesh hast Thou? As man seeth -- seest Thou?

5 “ ¿Son tus días como los días de un mortal, o tus años como los años del hombre,

As the days of man Thy days? Thy years as the days of a man?

6 p ara que andes averiguando mi culpa, y buscando mi pecado ?

That Thou inquirest for mine iniquity, And for my sin seekest?

7 “ Según tu conocimiento ciertamente no soy culpable; sin embargo no hay salvación de tu mano.

For Thou knowest that I am not wicked, And there is no deliverer from Thy hand.

8 “ Tus manos me formaron y me hicieron, ¿y me destruirás ?

Thy hands have taken pains about me, And they make me together round about, And Thou swallowest me up!

9 “ Acuérdate ahora que me has modelado como a barro, ¿y me harás volver al polvo ?

Remember, I pray Thee, That as clay Thou hast made me, And unto dust Thou dost bring me back.

10 “ ¿No me derramaste como leche, y como queso me cuajaste?

Dost Thou not as milk pour me out? And as cheese curdle me?

11 “ ¿No me vestiste de piel y de carne, y me entretejiste con huesos y tendones?

Skin and flesh Thou dost put on me, And with bones and sinews dost fence me.

12 “ Vida y misericordia me has concedido, y tu cuidado ha guardado mi espíritu.

Life and kindness Thou hast done with me. And Thy inspection hath preserved my spirit.

13 “ Sin embargo, tienes escondidas estas cosas en tu corazón, yo sé que esto está dentro de ti:

And these Thou hast laid up in Thy heart, I have known that this with Thee.

14 s i pecara, me lo tomarías en cuenta, y no me absolverías de mi culpa.

If I sinned, then Thou hast observed me, And from mine iniquity dost not acquit me,

15 “ Si soy malvado, ¡ay de mí!, y si soy justo, no me atrevo a levantar la cabeza. Estoy harto de deshonra y consciente de mi aflicción.

If I have done wickedly -- wo to me, And righteously -- I lift not up my head, Full of shame -- then see my affliction,

16 “ Si mi cabeza se levantara, como león me cazarías, y mostrarías tu poder contra mí.

And it riseth -- as a lion Thou huntest me. And Thou turnest back -- Thou shewest Thyself wonderful in me.

17 “ Renuevas tus pruebas contra mí, y te ensañas conmigo; tropas de relevo vienen contra mí.

Thou renewest Thy witnesses against me, And dost multiply Thine anger with me, Changes and warfare with me.

18 “ ¿ Por qué, pues, me sacaste de la matriz? ¡Ojalá que hubiera muerto y nadie me hubiera visto!

And why from the womb Hast Thou brought me forth? I expire, and the eye doth not see me.

19 “ Sería como si no hubiera existido, llevado del vientre a la sepultura.”

As I had not been, I am, From the belly to the grave I am brought,

20 ¿ No dejará El en paz mis breves días ? Apártate de mí para que me consuele un poco

Are not my days few? Cease then, and put from me, And I brighten up a little,

21 a ntes que me vaya, para no volver, a la tierra de tinieblas y sombras profundas;

Before I go, and return not, Unto a land of darkness and death-shade,

22 t ierra tan lóbrega como las mismas tinieblas, de sombras profundas, sin orden, y donde la luz es como las tinieblas.

A land of obscurity as thick darkness, Death-shade -- and no order, And the shining as thick darkness.'
