1 Y Jefté galaadita era un guerrero valiente, hijo de una ramera. Y Galaad era el padre de Jefté.

And Jephthah the Gileadite hath been a mighty man of valour, and he son of a woman, a harlot; and Gilead begetteth Jephthah,

2 Y la mujer de Galaad le dio hijos; y cuando los hijos de su mujer crecieron, echaron fuera a Jefté, y le dijeron: No tendrás heredad en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de otra mujer.

and the wife of Gilead beareth to him sons, and the wife's sons grow up and cast out Jephthah, and say to him, `Thou dost not inherit in the house of our father; for son of another woman thou.'

3 J efté huyó de sus hermanos y habitó en la tierra de Tob; y hombres indignos se juntaron con Jefté y salían con él.

And Jephthah fleeth from the face of his brethren, and dwelleth in the land of Tob; and vain men gather themselves together unto Jephthah, and they go out with him.

4 D espués de cierto tiempo sucedió que los hijos de Amón pelearon contra Israel.

And it cometh to pass, after a time, that the Bene-Ammon fight with Israel,

5 Y cuando los hijos de Amón pelearon contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron a traer a Jefté de la tierra de Tob.

and it cometh to pass, when the Bene-Ammon have fought with Israel, that the elders of Gilead go to take Jephthah from the land of Tob;

6 Y dijeron a Jefté: Ven y sé nuestro jefe para que peleemos contra los hijos de Amón.

and they say unto Jephthah, `Come, and thou hast been to us for captain, and we fight against the Bene-Ammon.'

7 E ntonces Jefté dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: ¿No me odiasteis y me echasteis de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué, pues, habéis venido a mí ahora cuando estáis en apuros ?

And Jephthah saith to the elders of Gilead, `Have not ye hated me? and ye cast me out from the house of my father, and wherefore have ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?'

8 Y los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: Por esta causa hemos vuelto a ti: para que vengas con nosotros y pelees contra los hijos de Amón y seas jefe sobre todos los habitantes de Galaad.

and the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Therefore, now, we have turned back unto thee; and thou hast gone with us, and fought against the Bene-Ammon, and thou hast been to us for head -- to all the inhabitants of Gilead.'

9 Y Jefté dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: Si me hacéis volver para pelear contra los hijos de Amón y el Señor me los entrega, ¿seré yo vuestro jefe?

And Jephthah saith unto the elders of Gilead, `If ye are taking me back to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and Jehovah hath given them before me -- I, am I to you for a head?'

10 Y los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: El Señor es testigo entre nosotros; ciertamente haremos como has dicho.

And the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Jehovah is hearkening between us -- if according to thy word we do not so.'

11 J efté fue con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo hizo cabeza y jefe sobre ellos; y Jefté habló todas sus palabras delante del Señor en Mizpa.

And Jephthah goeth with the elders of Gilead, and the people set him over them for head and for captain, and Jephthah speaketh all his words before Jehovah in Mizpeh.

12 Y envió Jefté mensajeros al rey de los hijos de Amón, diciendo: ¿Qué hay entre tú y yo, que has venido a mí para pelear contra mi tierra?

And Jephthah sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon, saying, `What -- to me and to thee, that thou hast come in unto me, to fight in my land.'

13 Y el rey de los hijos de Amón dijo a los mensajeros de Jefté: Porque Israel tomó mi tierra, cuando subieron de Egipto, desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc y el Jordán; por tanto devuélvela ahora en paz.

And the king of the Bene-Ammon saith unto the messengers of Jephthah, `Because Israel took my land in his coming up out of Egypt, from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan; and now, restore them in peace.'

14 P ero Jefté volvió a enviar mensajeros al rey de los hijos de Amón,

And Jephthah addeth yet and sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon,

15 q ue le dijeron: Así dice Jefté: “Israel no tomó la tierra de Moab, ni la tierra de los hijos de Amón.

and saith to him, `Thus said Jephthah, Israel took not the land of Moab, and the land of the Bene-Ammon,

16 “ Porque cuando subieron de Egipto, e Israel pasó por el desierto hasta el mar Rojo y llegó a Cades,

for in their coming up out of Egypt, Israel goeth in the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and cometh in to Kadesh,

17 I srael envió mensajeros al rey de Edom, diciendo: ‘Permítenos, te rogamos, pasar por tu tierra’, pero el rey de Edom no les escuchó. También enviaron mensajeros al rey de Moab pero él no consintió, así que Israel permaneció en Cades.

and Israel sendeth messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass over, I pray thee, through thy land, and the king of Edom hearkened not; and also unto the king of Moab hath sent, and he hath not been willing; and Israel abideth in Kadesh,

18 “ Luego atravesaron el desierto y rodearon la tierra de Edom y de Moab, llegaron al lado oriental de la tierra de Moab y acamparon al otro lado del Arnón; pero no entraron en el territorio de Moab, porque el Arnón era la frontera de Moab.

and he goeth through the wilderness, and compasseth the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and cometh in at the rising of the sun of the land of Moab, and they encamp beyond Arnon, and have not come into the border of Moab, for Arnon the border of Moab.

19 “ Y envió Israel mensajeros a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, rey de Hesbón, y le dijo Israel: ‘Permítenos, te rogamos, pasar por tu tierra a nuestro lugar.’

`And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon, king of the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and Israel saith to him, Let us pass over, we pray thee, through thy land, unto my place,

20 “ Pero Sehón no confió en Israel para darle paso por su territorio; reunió, pues, Sehón a todo su pueblo y acampó en Jahaza, y peleó contra Israel.

and Sihon hath not trusted Israel to pass over through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and they encamp in Jahaz, and fight with Israel;

21 “ Y el Señor, Dios de Israel, entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en manos de Israel, y los derrotaron, e Israel tomó posesión de toda la tierra de los amorreos, los habitantes de esa región.

and Jehovah, God of Israel, giveth Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smite them, and Israel possesseth all the land of the Amorite, the inhabitant of that land,

22 “ Y poseyeron todo el territorio de los amorreos desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.

and they possess all the border of the Amorite from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness, and unto the Jordan.

23 “ Y puesto que el Señor, Dios de Israel, expulsó a los amorreos de delante de su pueblo Israel, ¿has tú de poseerla?

`And now, Jehovah, God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorite from the presence of His people Israel, and thou wouldst possess it!

24 “ ¿No posees tú lo que Quemos, tu dios, te ha dado para poseer? De modo que todo el territorio que el Señor nuestro Dios ha desposeído delante de nosotros, lo poseeremos.

That which Chemosh thy god causeth thee to possess -- dost thou not possess it? and all that which Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from our presence, -- it we do possess.

25 “ Ahora pues, ¿eres tú mejor que Balac, hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab ? ¿Acaso luchó él con Israel, o acaso peleó contra ellos?

`And now, thou at all better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he at all strive with Israel? did he at all fight against them?

26 “ Mientras Israel habitaba en Hesbón y sus pueblos, y en Aroer y sus aldeas, y en todas las ciudades que están a orillas del Arnón, trescientos años, ¿por qué no las recuperaste durante ese tiempo?

In Israel's dwelling in Heshbon and in its towns, and in Aroer and in its towns, and in all the cities which by the sides of Arnon three hundred years -- and wherefore have ye not delivered them in that time?

27 “ Por tanto, yo no he pecado contra ti, pero tú me estás haciendo mal al hacer guerra contra mí; que el Señor, el Juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón.”

And I -- I have not sinned against thee, and thou art doing with me evil -- to fight against me. Jehovah, the Judge, doth judge to-day between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.'

28 P ero el rey de los hijos de Amón no hizo caso al mensaje que Jefté le envió. Voto y victoria de Jefté

And the king of the Bene-Ammon hath not hearkened unto the words of Jephthah which he sent unto him,

29 Y el Espíritu del Señor vino sobre Jefté, y pasó por Galaad y Manasés; luego pasó por Mizpa de Galaad, y de Mizpa de Galaad fue adonde estaban los hijos de Amón.

and the Spirit of Jehovah is on Jephthah, and he passeth over Gilead and Manasseh, and passeth over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he hath passed over to the Bene-Ammon.

30 Y Jefté hizo un voto al Señor, y dijo: Si en verdad entregas en mis manos a los hijos de Amón,

And Jephthah voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, `If Thou dost at all give the Bene-Ammon into my hand --

31 s ucederá que cualquiera que salga de las puertas de mi casa a recibirme cuando yo vuelva en paz de los hijos de Amón, será del Señor, o lo ofreceré como holocausto.

then it hath been, that which at all cometh out from the doors of my house to meet me in my turning back in peace from the Bene-Ammon -- it hath been to Jehovah, or I have offered up for it -- a burnt-offering.'

32 Y Jefté cruzó adonde estaban los hijos de Amón para pelear contra ellos; y el Señor los entregó en su mano.

And Jephthah passeth over unto the Bene-Ammon to fight against them, and Jehovah giveth them into his hand,

33 Y los hirió con una gran matanza desde Aroer hasta la entrada de Minit, veinte ciudades, hasta Abel-keramim. Y los hijos de Amón fueron sometidos delante de los hijos de Israel.

and he smiteth them from Aroer, and unto thy going in to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto the meadow of the vineyards -- a very great smiting; and the Bene-Ammon are humbled at the presence of the sons of Israel.

34 C uando Jefté llegó a su casa en Mizpa, he aquí, su hija salió a recibirlo con panderos y con danzas. Era ella su única hija; fuera de ella no tenía hijo ni hija.

And Jephthah cometh into Mizpeh, unto his house, and lo, his daughter is coming out to meet him with timbrels, and with choruses, and save her alone, he hath none, son or daughter.

35 Y cuando la vio, él rasgó sus ropas y dijo: ¡Ay, hija mía! Me has abatido y estás entre los que me afligen; porque he dado mi palabra al Señor, y no me puedo retractar.

And it cometh to pass, when he seeth her, that he rendeth his garments, and saith, `Alas, my daughter, thou hast caused me greatly to bend, and thou hast been among those troubling me; and I -- I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I am not able to turn back.'

36 E ntonces ella le dijo: Padre mío, has dado tu palabra al Señor; haz conmigo conforme a lo que has dicho, ya que el Señor te ha vengado de tus enemigos, los hijos de Amón.

And she saith unto him, `My father -- thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah, do to me as it hath gone out from thy mouth, after that Jehovah hath done for thee vengeance on thine enemies, on the Bene-Ammon.'

37 Y ella dijo a su padre: Que se haga esto por mí; déjame sola por dos meses, para que vaya yo a los montes y llore por mi virginidad, yo y mis compañeras.

And she saith unto her father, `Let this thing be done to me; desist from me two months, and I go on, and have gone down on the hills, and I weep for my virginity -- I and my friends.'

38 Y él dijo: Ve, y la dejó ir por dos meses; y ella se fue con sus compañeras, y lloró su virginidad por los montes.

And he saith, `Go;' and he sendeth her away two months, and she goeth, she and her friends, and she weepeth for her virginity on the hills;

39 A l cabo de los dos meses ella regresó a su padre, que hizo con ella conforme al voto que había hecho; y ella no tuvo relaciones con ningún hombre. Y se hizo costumbre en Israel,

and it cometh to pass at the end of two months that she turneth back unto her father, and he doth to her his vow which he hath vowed, and she knew not a man; and it is a statute in Israel:

40 q ue de año en año las hijas de Israel fueran cuatro días en el año a conmemorar a la hija de Jefté galaadita.

from time to time the daughters of Israel go to talk to the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days in a year.
