1 I efte, il Galaadita, era un uomo forte e valoroso, figlio di una prostituta, e aveva Galaad per padre.

And Jephthah the Gileadite hath been a mighty man of valour, and he son of a woman, a harlot; and Gilead begetteth Jephthah,

2 L a moglie di Galaad gli aveva dato dei figli, e quando essi furono grandi, scacciarono Iefte e gli dissero: «Tu non avrai eredità in casa di nostro padre, perché sei figlio di un’altra donna».

and the wife of Gilead beareth to him sons, and the wife's sons grow up and cast out Jephthah, and say to him, `Thou dost not inherit in the house of our father; for son of another woman thou.'

3 I efte se ne fuggì lontano dai suoi fratelli e si stabilì nel paese di Tob. Degli avventurieri si raccolsero intorno a Iefte e facevano delle incursioni con lui.

And Jephthah fleeth from the face of his brethren, and dwelleth in the land of Tob; and vain men gather themselves together unto Jephthah, and they go out with him.

4 Q ualche tempo dopo avvenne che i figli di Ammon mossero guerra a Israele.

And it cometh to pass, after a time, that the Bene-Ammon fight with Israel,

5 M entre i figli di Ammon erano in guerra contro Israele, gli anziani di Galaad andarono a cercare Iefte nel paese di Tob.

and it cometh to pass, when the Bene-Ammon have fought with Israel, that the elders of Gilead go to take Jephthah from the land of Tob;

6 D issero a Iefte: «Vieni, sii nostro capitano e combatteremo contro i figli di Ammon».

and they say unto Jephthah, `Come, and thou hast been to us for captain, and we fight against the Bene-Ammon.'

7 M a Iefte rispose agli anziani di Galaad: «Non mi avete odiato e scacciato dalla casa di mio padre? Perché venite da me ora che siete nell’angoscia?»

And Jephthah saith to the elders of Gilead, `Have not ye hated me? and ye cast me out from the house of my father, and wherefore have ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?'

8 G li anziani di Galaad dissero a Iefte: «Appunto per questo ora torniamo da te, perché tu venga con noi a combattere contro i figli di Ammon e tu sia capo di noi tutti che abitiamo in Galaad».

and the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Therefore, now, we have turned back unto thee; and thou hast gone with us, and fought against the Bene-Ammon, and thou hast been to us for head -- to all the inhabitants of Gilead.'

9 I efte rispose agli anziani di Galaad: «Se mi fate ritornare da voi per combattere contro i figli di Ammon e il Signore li dà in mio potere, io sarò vostro capo».

And Jephthah saith unto the elders of Gilead, `If ye are taking me back to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and Jehovah hath given them before me -- I, am I to you for a head?'

10 G li anziani di Galaad dissero a Iefte: «Il Signore sia testimone e giudice se non facciamo quello che hai detto».

And the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Jehovah is hearkening between us -- if according to thy word we do not so.'

11 I efte dunque andò con gli anziani di Galaad; il popolo lo nominò suo capo e condottiero e Iefte ripeté davanti al Signore, a Mispa, tutte le parole che aveva dette prima.

And Jephthah goeth with the elders of Gilead, and the people set him over them for head and for captain, and Jephthah speaketh all his words before Jehovah in Mizpeh.

12 P oi Iefte inviò dei messaggeri al re degli Ammoniti per dirgli: «Perché vieni contro di me per fare guerra al mio paese?»

And Jephthah sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon, saying, `What -- to me and to thee, that thou hast come in unto me, to fight in my land.'

13 I l re degli Ammoniti rispose ai messaggeri di Iefte: «Mi sono mosso perché, quando Israele salì dall’Egitto, s’impadronì del mio paese, dall’Arnon fino allo Iabboc e al Giordano. Rendimelo amichevolmente».

And the king of the Bene-Ammon saith unto the messengers of Jephthah, `Because Israel took my land in his coming up out of Egypt, from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan; and now, restore them in peace.'

14 I efte inviò di nuovo dei messaggeri al re degli Ammoniti per dirgli:

And Jephthah addeth yet and sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon,

15 « Così dice Iefte: “Israele non si impadronì del paese di Moab, né del paese degli Ammoniti;

and saith to him, `Thus said Jephthah, Israel took not the land of Moab, and the land of the Bene-Ammon,

16 m a, quando Israele salì dall’Egitto e attraversò il deserto fino al mar Rosso e giunse a Cades,

for in their coming up out of Egypt, Israel goeth in the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and cometh in to Kadesh,

17 i nviò dei messaggeri al re di Edom per dirgli: ‘Ti prego, lasciami passare per il tuo paese’; ma il re di Edom non acconsentì. Ne mandò anche al re di Moab, il quale pure rifiutò; e Israele rimase a Cades.

and Israel sendeth messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass over, I pray thee, through thy land, and the king of Edom hearkened not; and also unto the king of Moab hath sent, and he hath not been willing; and Israel abideth in Kadesh,

18 P oi camminò per il deserto, fece il giro del paese di Edom e del paese di Moab, giunse a oriente del paese di Moab e si accampò di là dall’Arnon, senza entrare nel territorio di Moab; perché l’Arnon segna il confine di Moab.

and he goeth through the wilderness, and compasseth the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and cometh in at the rising of the sun of the land of Moab, and they encamp beyond Arnon, and have not come into the border of Moab, for Arnon the border of Moab.

19 I sraele inviò dei messaggeri a Sicon, re degli Amorei, re di Chesbon e gli mandò a dire: ‘Ti preghiamo, lasciaci passare attraverso il tuo paese, per arrivare al nostro’.

`And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon, king of the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and Israel saith to him, Let us pass over, we pray thee, through thy land, unto my place,

20 M a Sicon non si fidò d’Israele e non gli permise di passare per il suo territorio; anzi Sicon radunò tutta la sua gente, si accampò a Iaas e combatté contro Israele.

and Sihon hath not trusted Israel to pass over through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and they encamp in Jahaz, and fight with Israel;

21 I l Signore, il Dio d’Israele, diede Sicon e tutta la sua gente nelle mani d’Israele, che li sconfisse; così Israele conquistò tutto il paese degli Amorei, che abitavano quella regione;

and Jehovah, God of Israel, giveth Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smite them, and Israel possesseth all the land of the Amorite, the inhabitant of that land,

22 c onquistò tutto il territorio degli Amorei, dall’Arnon allo Iabboc e dal deserto al Giordano.

and they possess all the border of the Amorite from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness, and unto the Jordan.

23 O ra che il Signore, il Dio d’Israele, ha scacciato gli Amorei davanti a Israele, che è il suo popolo, dovresti tu possedere il loro paese?

`And now, Jehovah, God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorite from the presence of His people Israel, and thou wouldst possess it!

24 N on possiedi tu quello che Chemos, il tuo dio, ti ha fatto possedere? Così anche noi possederemo il paese di quelli che il Signore ha scacciato davanti a noi.

That which Chemosh thy god causeth thee to possess -- dost thou not possess it? and all that which Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from our presence, -- it we do possess.

25 S ei tu forse migliore di Balac, figlio di Sippor, re di Moab? Litigò egli con Israele? Gli fece guerra?

`And now, thou at all better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he at all strive with Israel? did he at all fight against them?

26 S ono trecento anni che Israele abita a Chesbon e nelle città del suo territorio, ad Aroer e nelle città del suo territorio e in tutte le città lungo l’Arnon; perché non gliele avete tolte durante questo tempo?

In Israel's dwelling in Heshbon and in its towns, and in Aroer and in its towns, and in all the cities which by the sides of Arnon three hundred years -- and wherefore have ye not delivered them in that time?

27 I o non ti ho offeso. Tu agisci male verso di me, muovendomi guerra. Il Signore, il giudice, giudichi oggi tra i figli d’Israele e i figli di Ammon!”».

And I -- I have not sinned against thee, and thou art doing with me evil -- to fight against me. Jehovah, the Judge, doth judge to-day between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.'

28 M a il re degli Ammoniti non diede ascolto alle parole che Iefte gli aveva mandato a dire. Disfatta degli Ammoniti; la figlia di Iefte

And the king of the Bene-Ammon hath not hearkened unto the words of Jephthah which he sent unto him,

29 A llora lo Spirito del Signore venne su Iefte, che attraversò Galaad e Manasse, passò a Mispa di Galaad e da Mispa di Galaad mosse contro i figli di Ammon.

and the Spirit of Jehovah is on Jephthah, and he passeth over Gilead and Manasseh, and passeth over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he hath passed over to the Bene-Ammon.

30 I efte fece un voto al Signore e disse: «Se tu mi dai nelle mani i figli di Ammon,

And Jephthah voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, `If Thou dost at all give the Bene-Ammon into my hand --

31 c hiunque uscirà dalla porta di casa mia per venirmi incontro, quando tornerò vincitore sugli Ammoniti, sarà del Signore e io l’offrirò in olocausto».

then it hath been, that which at all cometh out from the doors of my house to meet me in my turning back in peace from the Bene-Ammon -- it hath been to Jehovah, or I have offered up for it -- a burnt-offering.'

32 I efte marciò contro i figli di Ammon per fare loro guerra e il Signore glieli diede nelle mani.

And Jephthah passeth over unto the Bene-Ammon to fight against them, and Jehovah giveth them into his hand,

33 E gli li sconfisse da Aroer fino a Minnit, devastando venti città, e fino ad Abel-Cheramin. Fu una grandissima sconfitta per i figli di Ammon, che furono umiliati davanti ai figli d’Israele.

and he smiteth them from Aroer, and unto thy going in to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto the meadow of the vineyards -- a very great smiting; and the Bene-Ammon are humbled at the presence of the sons of Israel.

34 I efte tornò a Mispa, a casa sua; ed ecco uscirgli incontro sua figlia, con timpani e danze. Era l’unica sua figlia; non aveva altri figli né altre figlie.

And Jephthah cometh into Mizpeh, unto his house, and lo, his daughter is coming out to meet him with timbrels, and with choruses, and save her alone, he hath none, son or daughter.

35 C ome la vide, si stracciò le vesti e disse: «Ah, figlia mia! Tu mi riempi d’angoscia! Tu sei fra quelli che mi fanno soffrire! Io ho fatto una promessa al Signore e non posso revocarla».

And it cometh to pass, when he seeth her, that he rendeth his garments, and saith, `Alas, my daughter, thou hast caused me greatly to bend, and thou hast been among those troubling me; and I -- I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I am not able to turn back.'

36 L ei gli disse: «Padre mio, se hai dato la tua parola al Signore, trattami secondo la tua promessa, poiché il Signore ti ha permesso di vendicarti dei figli di Ammon, tuoi nemici».

And she saith unto him, `My father -- thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah, do to me as it hath gone out from thy mouth, after that Jehovah hath done for thee vengeance on thine enemies, on the Bene-Ammon.'

37 P oi disse a suo padre: «Mi sia concesso questo: lasciami libera per due mesi, affinché vada su e giù per i monti a piangere la mia verginità con le mie compagne».

And she saith unto her father, `Let this thing be done to me; desist from me two months, and I go on, and have gone down on the hills, and I weep for my virginity -- I and my friends.'

38 E gli le rispose: «Va’!» e la lasciò andare per due mesi. Lei se ne andò con le sue compagne e pianse sui monti la sua verginità.

And he saith, `Go;' and he sendeth her away two months, and she goeth, she and her friends, and she weepeth for her virginity on the hills;

39 A lla fine dei due mesi tornò da suo padre; ed egli fece di lei quello che aveva promesso. Lei non aveva conosciuto uomo. Di qui venne in Israele l’usanza

and it cometh to pass at the end of two months that she turneth back unto her father, and he doth to her his vow which he hath vowed, and she knew not a man; and it is a statute in Israel:

40 c he le figlie d’Israele vadano tutti gli anni a celebrare la figlia di Iefte, il Galaadita, per quattro giorni.

from time to time the daughters of Israel go to talk to the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days in a year.
