1 P alabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del Señor, diciendo:

The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,

2 L evántate y desciende a la casa del alfarero, y allí te haré oír mis palabras.

Rise, and thou hast gone down the potter's house, and there I cause thee to hear My words;

3 E ntonces descendí a casa del alfarero, y he aquí, estaba allí haciendo un trabajo sobre la rueda.

and I go down the potter's house, and lo, he is doing a work on the stones,

4 Y la vasija de barro que estaba haciendo se echó a perder en la mano del alfarero; así que volvió a hacer de ella otra vasija, según le pareció mejor al alfarero hacer la.

and marred is the vessel that he is making, as clay in the hand of the potter, and he hath turned and he maketh it another vessel, as it was right in the eyes of the potter to make.

5 E ntonces vino a mí la palabra del Señor, diciendo:

And there is a word of Jehovah to me, saying:

6 ¿ No puedo yo hacer con vosotros, casa de Israel, lo mismo que hace este alfarero? —declara el Señor. He aquí, como el barro en manos del alfarero, así sois vosotros en mi mano, casa de Israel.

As this potter am I not able to do to you? O house of Israel, an affirmation of Jehovah. Lo, as clay in the hand of the potter, So ye in My hand, O house of Israel.

7 E n un momento yo puedo hablar contra una nación o contra un reino, de arrancar, de derribar y de destruir;

The moment I speak concerning a nation, And concerning a kingdom, To pluck up and to break down, and to destroy,

8 p ero si esa nación contra la que he hablado se vuelve de su maldad, me arrepentiré del mal que pensaba traer sobre ella.

And that nation hath turned from its evil, Because I have spoken against it, Then I have repented of the evil that I thought to do to it.

9 Y de pronto puedo hablar acerca de una nación o de un reino, de edificar y de plantar;

And the moment I speak concerning a nation, And concerning a kingdom, to build, and to plant,

10 p ero si hace lo malo ante mis ojos, no obedeciendo mi voz, entonces me arrepentiré del bien con que había prometido bendecirlo.

And it hath done the evil thing in Mine eyes, So as not to hearken to My voice, Then I have repented of the good That I have spoken of doing to it.

11 A hora pues, habla a los hombres de Judá y a los habitantes de Jerusalén, diciendo: “Así dice el Señor: ‘He aquí, estoy preparando una calamidad contra vosotros y tramando un plan contra vosotros. Volveos, pues, cada uno de su mal camino y enmendad vuestros caminos y vuestras obras.’”

And now, speak, I pray thee, unto men of Judah, And against inhabitants of Jerusalem, Saying: Thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am framing against you evil, And devising against you a device, Turn back, I pray you, each from his evil way And amen your ways and your doings.

12 M as ellos dirán: “Es en vano; porque vamos a seguir nuestros propios planes, y cada uno de nosotros obrará conforme a la terquedad de su malvado corazón.”

And they have said, It is incurable, For after our own devices we do go, And each the stubbornness of his evil heart we do.

13 P or tanto, así dice el Señor: “Preguntad ahora entre las naciones: ¿Quién ha oído cosa semejante ? Algo muy horrible ha hecho la virgen de Israel.

Therefore, thus said Jehovah: Ask, I pray you, among the nations, Who hath heard like these? A very horrible thing hath the virgin of Israel done.

14 “ ¿Faltará la nieve del Líbano de la roca agreste? ¿O se agotarán las aguas frías que fluyen de tierras lejanas ?

Doth snow of Lebanon Cease from the rock of the field? Failed are the cold strange waters that flow?

15 “ Pues bien, mi pueblo me ha olvidado, queman incienso a dioses vanos, y se han desviado de sus caminos, de las sendas antiguas, para andar por senderos, no por calzada,

But My people have forgotten Me, to a vain thing they make perfume, And they cause them to stumble in their ways -- paths of old, To walk in paths -- a way not raised up,

16 c onvirtiendo su tierra en una desolación, en una burla perpetua. Todo el que pase por ella se quedará atónito y meneará la cabeza.

To make their land become a desolation, A hissing age-during, Every passer by it is astonished, And bemoaneth with his head.

17 “ Como viento solano los esparciré delante del enemigo; les mostraré la espalda y no el rostro el día de su calamidad.”

As an east wind I scatter them before an enemy, The neck, and not the face, I shew them, In the day of their calamity.'

18 E ntonces dijeron: Venid y urdamos planes contra Jeremías. Ciertamente la ley no le faltará al sacerdote, ni el consejo al sabio, ni la palabra al profeta. Venid e hirámoslo con la lengua, y no hagamos caso a ninguna de sus palabras.

And they say, Come, And we devise against Jeremiah devices, For law doth not perish from the priest, Nor counsel from the wise, Nor the word from the prophet, Come, and we smite him with the tongue, And we do not attend to any of his words.

19 A tiéndeme, oh Señor, y escucha lo que dicen mis contrarios.

Give attention, O Jehovah, unto me, And hearken to the voice of those contending with me.

20 ¿ Acaso se paga mal por bien ? Pues han cavado fosa para mí. Recuerda cómo me puse delante de ti para hablar bien en favor de ellos, para apartar de ellos tu furor.

Is evil recompensed instead of good, That they have dug a pit for my soul? Remember my standing before Thee to speak good of them, To turn back Thy wrath from them.

21 P or tanto, entrega sus hijos al hambre, y abandónalos al poder de la espada; queden sus mujeres sin hijos y viudas, sean sus maridos asesinados, heridos a espada sus jóvenes en la batalla.

Therefore, give up their sons to famine, And cause them to run on the sides of the sword, And their wives are bereaved and widows, And their men are slain by death, Their young men smitten by sword in battle,

22 O iganse los gritos desde sus casas, cuando de repente traigas sobre ellos saqueadores; porque han cavado fosa para atraparme, y han escondido trampas a mis pies.

A cry is heard from their houses, For Thou bringest against them suddenly a troop, For they dug a pit to capture me, And snares they have hidden for my feet.

23 P ero tú, oh Señor, conoces todos sus planes de muerte contra mí. No perdones su iniquidad ni borres de tu vista su pecado; sean derribados delante de ti, en el tiempo de tu ira actúa contra ellos.

And Thou, O Jehovah, Thou hast known, All their counsel against me for death, Thou dost not cover over their iniquity, Nor their sin from before Thee blottest out, And they are made to stumble before Thee, In the time of Thine anger work against them!
