1 A cesta este Cuvântul care a venit la Ieremia din partea Domnului:

The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,

2 „ Scoală-te şi coboară-te spre casa olarului! Acolo te voi face să auzi cuvintele Mele!“

Rise, and thou hast gone down the potter's house, and there I cause thee to hear My words;

3 A m coborât spre casa olarului şi iată că el făcea o lucrare pe roată.

and I go down the potter's house, and lo, he is doing a work on the stones,

4 Î nsă vasul de lut pe care îl făcea olarul s-a stricat în mâna lui. Atunci el a făcut un alt vas, aşa cum i-a plăcut lui să-l facă.

and marred is the vessel that he is making, as clay in the hand of the potter, and he hath turned and he maketh it another vessel, as it was right in the eyes of the potter to make.

5 C uvântul Domnului a venit din nou la mine şi mi-a zis:

And there is a word of Jehovah to me, saying:

6 „ Oare Eu nu pot face cu voi ca olarul acesta, casă a lui Israel, zice Domnul ? Iată, ca lutul în mâna olarului, aşa sunteţi voi în mâna Mea, casă a lui Israel.

As this potter am I not able to do to you? O house of Israel, an affirmation of Jehovah. Lo, as clay in the hand of the potter, So ye in My hand, O house of Israel.

7 D acă la un moment dat zic despre un neam sau despre un regat că-l voi smulge, că-l voi dărâma şi că-l voi distruge,

The moment I speak concerning a nation, And concerning a kingdom, To pluck up and to break down, and to destroy,

8 î nsă neamul acela, despre care am vorbit, se întoarce de la răutatea lui, atunci şi Mie Îmi va părea rău de răul pe care plănuisem să i-l fac.

And that nation hath turned from its evil, Because I have spoken against it, Then I have repented of the evil that I thought to do to it.

9 T ot aşa, dacă la un moment dat zic despre un neam sau despre un regat că-l voi zidi şi că-l voi planta,

And the moment I speak concerning a nation, And concerning a kingdom, to build, and to plant,

10 î nsă poporul acela face ce este rău înaintea ochilor Mei şi nu ascultă de glasul Meu, atunci şi Mie Îmi va părea rău de binele pe care plănuisem să i-l fac.“

And it hath done the evil thing in Mine eyes, So as not to hearken to My voice, Then I have repented of the good That I have spoken of doing to it.

11 „ Prin urmare, vorbeşte acum oamenilor lui Iuda şi locuitorilor Ierusalimului şi zi-le că aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Iată, pregătesc o nenorocire împotriva voastră şi fac un plan împotriva voastră. De aceea, întoarceţi-vă fiecare de la calea voastră cea rea şi îndreptaţi-vă căile şi faptele!»

And now, speak, I pray thee, unto men of Judah, And against inhabitants of Jerusalem, Saying: Thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am framing against you evil, And devising against you a device, Turn back, I pray you, each from his evil way And amen your ways and your doings.

12 E i însă zic: «În zadar! Noi ne vom urma în continuare gândurile şi fiecare va lucra după încăpăţânarea inimii lui rele.»

And they have said, It is incurable, For after our own devices we do go, And each the stubbornness of his evil heart we do.

13 D e aceea, aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Întrebaţi printre neamuri: ‘Cine a mai auzit asemenea lucruri? Fecioara Israel a făcut cel mai îngrozitor lucru.

Therefore, thus said Jehovah: Ask, I pray you, among the nations, Who hath heard like these? A very horrible thing hath the virgin of Israel done.

14 O are zăpada Libanului părăseşte vreodată stâncile versanţilor lui ? Oare seacă vreodată apele reci care vin de departe? ’

Doth snow of Lebanon Cease from the rock of the field? Failed are the cold strange waters that flow?

15 C ei din poporul Meu însă M-au uitat şi aduc tămâie idolilor de nimic. Aceştia i-au făcut să se împiedice pe căile lor, pe vechile cărări, pentru a umbla pe poteci şi pe drumuri nebătătorite,

But My people have forgotten Me, to a vain thing they make perfume, And they cause them to stumble in their ways -- paths of old, To walk in paths -- a way not raised up,

16 f ăcând astfel din ţara lor o pustietate şi o veşnică batjocură. Toţi cei ce trec prin ea sunt uimiţi şi dau din cap.

To make their land become a desolation, A hissing age-during, Every passer by it is astonished, And bemoaneth with his head.

17 C a vântul din răsărit, aşa îi voi împrăştia înaintea duşmanului. În ziua necazului lor le voi arăta spatele şi nu faţa.»“

As an east wind I scatter them before an enemy, The neck, and not the face, I shew them, In the day of their calamity.'

18 E i zic: „Veniţi! Să urzim planuri împotriva lui Ieremia! Căci doar nu va pieri Legea din lipsă de preoţi, nici sfatul – din lipsă de înţelepţi şi nici Cuvântul – din lipsă de profeţi. Haideţi să-l lovim cu vorba şi să nu luăm seama la toate cuvintele lui!“

And they say, Come, And we devise against Jeremiah devices, For law doth not perish from the priest, Nor counsel from the wise, Nor the word from the prophet, Come, and we smite him with the tongue, And we do not attend to any of his words.

19 „ Ascultă-mă, Doamne! Ascultă glasul adversarilor mei.

Give attention, O Jehovah, unto me, And hearken to the voice of those contending with me.

20 S e răsplăteşte oare binele cu rău? Şi totuşi ei au săpat o groapă sufletului meu. Adu-Ţi aminte că eu am stat în faţa Ta ca să vorbesc în favoarea lor şi să abat mânia Ta de la ei.

Is evil recompensed instead of good, That they have dug a pit for my soul? Remember my standing before Thee to speak good of them, To turn back Thy wrath from them.

21 D e aceea, dă-le copiii pradă foametei şi lasă-i pe mâna sabiei! Soţiile să le fie lipsite de copii şi să rămână văduve, oamenii lor să fie daţi la moarte, iar tinerii lor să fie ucişi cu sabia în luptă!

Therefore, give up their sons to famine, And cause them to run on the sides of the sword, And their wives are bereaved and widows, And their men are slain by death, Their young men smitten by sword in battle,

22 U n strigăt să fie auzit din casele lor, atunci când vei aduce deodată cete peste ei, căci au săpat o groapă să mă prindă şi au ascuns laţuri pentru picioarele mele.

A cry is heard from their houses, For Thou bringest against them suddenly a troop, For they dug a pit to capture me, And snares they have hidden for my feet.

23 D ar Tu, Doamne, cunoşti toate planurile lor de a mă ucide. Nu le ierta nelegiuirea şi nu le şterge păcatul dinaintea Ta. Să fie doborâţi înaintea Ta! Lucrează împotriva lor la vremea mâniei Tale!“

And Thou, O Jehovah, Thou hast known, All their counsel against me for death, Thou dost not cover over their iniquity, Nor their sin from before Thee blottest out, And they are made to stumble before Thee, In the time of Thine anger work against them!
