1 I ată care sunt neamurile pe care le-a lăsat Domnul pentru ca, prin ele, să-i pună la încercare pe israeliţi, pe aceia care nu luaseră parte la războaiele din Canaan.

And these the nations which Jehovah left, to try Israel by them, all who have not known all the wars of Canaan;

2 E l a lăsat acele neamuri, doar pentru că dorea să-i înveţe arta războiului pe cei din generaţiile următoare ale israeliţilor, care n-o cunoscuseră dinainte.

(only for the sake of the generations of the sons of Israel's knowing, to teach them war, only those who formerly have not known them) --

3 A şadar neamurile acestea erau: filistenii cu cei cinci domnitori ai lor, toţi canaaniţii, sidonienii, hiviţii care locuiau în regiunea muntoasă a Libanului, de la muntele Baal-Hermon până la Lebo-Hamat.

five princes of the Philistines, and all the Canaanite, and the Zidonian, and the Hivite inhabiting mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-Hermon unto the entering in of Hamath;

4 E le au fost folosite pentru a-i pune la încercare pe israeliţi, căci Domnul voia să vadă dacă vor păzi poruncile pe care le-a încredinţat strămoşilor lor prin Moise.

and they are to prove Israel by them, to know whether they obey the commands of Jehovah that He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

5 Ş i astfel israeliţii au locuit printre canaaniţi, hitiţi, amoriţi, periziţi, hiviţi şi iebusiţi.

And the sons of Israel have dwelt in the midst of the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite,

6 A u luat pe fetele lor de soţii, au dat pe fetele lor fiilor acestora şi au slujit zeilor lor. Otniel

and take their daughters to them for wives, and their daughters have given to their sons, and they serve their gods;

7 I sraeliţii au făcut ce este rău în ochii Domnului. L-au uitat pe Domnul, Dumnezeul lor, şi au slujit baalilor şi aşerelor de tot felul.

and the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and forget Jehovah their God, and serve the Baalim and the shrines.

8 D omnul s-a aprins de mânie împotriva poporului Israel şi El i-a vândut în mâna lui Cuşan-Rişatayim, regele din Aram-Naharayim. Israeliţii i-au slujit lui Cuşan-Rişatayim timp de opt ani.

And the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel, and He selleth them into the hand of Chushan-Rishathaim king of Aram-Naharaim, and the sons of Israel serve Chushan-Rishathaim eight years;

9 A tunci israeliţii au strigat către Domnul şi Domnul le-a ridicat un salvator, care i-a eliberat: pe Otniel, fiul lui Chenaz, fratele mai mic al lui Caleb.

and the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah, and Jehovah raiseth a saviour to the sons of Israel, and he saveth them -- Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother;

10 D uhul Domnului a fost peste el şi el a judecat Israelul. A pornit la război şi Domnul l-a dat în mâna lui pe Cuşan-Rişatayim, regele Aramului. Mâna lui a fost puternică împotriva lui Cuşan-Rişatayim.

and the Spirit of Jehovah is upon him, and he judgeth Israel, and goeth out to battle, and Jehovah giveth unto his hand Chushan-Rishathaim king of Aram, and strong is his hand against Chushan-Rishathaim;

11 A stfel, în ţară a fost pace timp de patruzeci de ani. Apoi Otniel, fiul lui Chenaz, a murit. Ehud

and the land resteth forty years. And Othniel son of Kenaz dieth,

12 I sraeliţii au făcut din nou ce este rău în ochii Domnului şi de aceea Domnul a întărit stăpânirea lui Eglon, regele Moabului, asupra lor.

and the sons of Israel add to do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah; and Jehovah strengtheneth Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because that they have done the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah;

13 E l i-a chemat pe amoniţi şi pe amalekiţi să i se alăture şi împreună au pornit la război. L-a învins pe Israel şi a ocupat Cetatea Palmierilor.

and he gathereth unto him the Bene-Ammon and Amalek, and goeth and smiteth Israel, and they possess the city of palms;

14 A stfel, israeliţii i-au slujit lui Eglon, regele Moabului, timp de optsprezece ani.

and the sons of Israel serve Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.

15 I sraeliţii au strigat din nou către Domnul şi Domnul le-a ridicat un alt salvator: pe Ehud, fiul beniamitului Ghera, care era stângaci. Israeliţii au trimis tributul prin el, lui Eglon, regele Moabului.

And the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah, and Jehovah raiseth to them a saviour, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjamite (a man -- shut of his right hand), and the sons of Israel send by his hand a present to Eglon king of Moab;

16 E hud şi-a făcut o sabie cu două tăişuri, având o lungime de un cot şi a fixat-o sub haină pe coapsa dreaptă.

and Ehud maketh for himself a sword, and it hath two mouths (a cubit its length), and he girdeth it under his long robe on his right thigh;

17 A poi a sosit cu tributul la Eglon, regele Moabului, care era un bărbat foarte gras.

and he bringeth near the present to Eglon king of Moab, and Eglon a very fat man.

18 D upă ce a înmânat tributul, i-a trimis înapoi pe oamenii care-l aduseseră.

And it cometh to pass, when he hath finished to bring near the present, that he sendeth away the people bearing the present,

19 D upă aceea, el însuşi a făcut cale întoarsă de la idolii de piatră care erau aproape de Ghilgal şi i-a zis lui Eglon: – Majestate, am un mesaj numai pentru tine! – Tăcere, a zis regele. Şi toţi cei ce stăteau în jurul lui au plecat.

and he himself hath turned back from the graven images which at Gilgal, and saith, `A secret word I have unto thee, O king;' and he saith, `Hush!' and go out from him do all those standing by him.

20 E hud s-a apropiat de el; acesta stătea singur în odaia de vară de pe acoperiş. Ehud i-a zis: „Am un mesaj din partea lui Dumnezeu pentru tine!“ Regele s-a ridicat de pe scaun.

And Ehud hath come unto him, and he is sitting in the upper chamber of the wall which he hath for himself, and Ehud saith, `A word of God I have unto thee;' and he riseth from off the throne;

21 E hud şi-a întins mâna stângă, a luat sabia de pe coapsa dreaptă şi i-a înfipt-o în burtă.

and Ehud putteth forth his left hand, and taketh the sword from off his right thigh, and striketh it into his belly;

22 L ama a intrat cu mâner cu tot, iar grăsimea s-a strâns în jurul lamei, astfel încât nu i-a mai scos sabia din burtă, iar măruntaiele i-au ieşit afară.

and the haft also goeth in after the blade, and the fat shutteth on the blade, that he hath not drawn the sword out of his belly, and it goeth out at the fundament.

23 E hud a ieşit prin verandă, a închis după el uşile odăii de pe acoperiş şi le-a încuiat.

And Ehud goeth out at the porch, and shutteth the doors of the upper chamber upon him, and hath bolted;

24 D upă ce a plecat Ehud, au venit slujitorii regelui, s-au uitat şi au observat că uşile odăii de pe acoperiş erau închise. Ei şi-au zis: „Cu siguranţă că el îşi acoperă picioarele în odaia de vară!“

and he hath gone out, and his servants have come in, and look, and lo, the doors of the upper chamber are bolted, and they say, `He is only covering his feet in the inner chamber of the wall.'

25 Ş i s-au tot învârtit prin preajmă până ce şi-au pierdut răbdarea. Când au văzut că nu deschide uşile odăii, au luat cheia, au deschis şi l-au găsit pe stăpânul lor zăcând mort pe pământ.

And they stay till confounded, and lo, he is not opening the doors of the upper chamber, and they take the key, and open, and lo, their lord is fallen to the earth -- dead.

26 Î n timp ce ei aşteptau, Ehud a fugit, a trecut de idolii de piatră şi a scăpat în Seira.

And Ehud escaped during their tarrying, and hath passed by the images, and is escaped to Seirath.

27 D e îndată ce a ajuns acolo, a sunat din corn prin toată regiunea muntoasă a lui Efraim. Israeliţii au coborât şi ei împreună cu el de pe munte, acesta stând în fruntea lor.

And it cometh to pass, in his coming in, that he bloweth with a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim, and go down with him do the sons of Israel from the hill-country, and he before them;

28 E l le-a zis: „Urmaţi-mă, căci Domnul i-a dat în mâinile voastre pe moabiţi, duşmanii voştri!“ Ei l-au urmat, au ocupat vadurile Iordanului, care duc spre Moab şi n-au lăsat pe nimeni să treacă.

and he saith unto them, `Pursue after me, for Jehovah hath given your enemies, the Moabites, into your hand;' and they go down after him, and capture the passages of the Jordan towards Moab, and have not permitted a man to pass over.

29 A u ucis atunci în jur de zece mii de moabiţi, toţi bărbaţi robuşti şi puternici. Nici un om nu a scăpat.

And they smite Moab at that time, about ten thousand men, all robust, and every one a man of valour, and not a man hath escaped,

30 Î n ziua aceea Moabul a fost umilit de către Israel şi astfel în ţară a fost pace timp de optzeci de ani. Şamgar

and Moab is humbled in that day under the hand of Israel; and the land resteth eighty years.

31 D upă el a urmat Şamgar, fiul lui Anat. El a ucis şase sute de filisteni cu o ţepuşă de mânat vite şi l-a eliberat astfel pe Israel.

And after him hath been Shamgar son of Anath, and he smiteth the Philistines -- six hundred men -- with an ox-goad, and he saveth -- he also -- Israel.
