1 U n oarecare Lazăr din Betania, satul Mariei şi al Martei, sora ei, era bolnav.

And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister --

2 M aria era cea care L-a uns pe Domnul cu parfum şi I-a şters picioarele cu părul ei; fratele ei, Lazăr, era bolnav.

and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing --

3 S urorile au trimis la Isus să-I spună: „Doamne, iată că cel pe care-l iubeşti este bolnav!“

therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;'

4 D ar Isus, când a auzit, a zis: „Boala aceasta nu este spre moarte, ci spre slava lui Dumnezeu, pentru ca Fiul lui Dumnezeu să fie slăvit prin ea.“

and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.'

5 I sus îi iubea pe Marta, pe sora ei şi pe Lazăr.

And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,

6 T otuşi, când a auzit că Lazăr este bolnav, a mai rămas în locul unde era încă două zile.

when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,

7 D upă aceea le-a zis ucenicilor: – Să ne ducem din nou în Iudeea!

then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;'

8 U cenicii I-au răspuns: – Rabbi, până acum iudeii căutau să arunce cu pietre în Tine şi Tu Te duci din nou acolo?!

the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!'

9 I sus le-a răspuns: – Nu sunt douăsprezece ore de lumină în zi? Dacă cineva umblă ziua, nu se împiedică, pentru că vede lumina acestei lumi,

Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;

10 d ar dacă cineva umblă noaptea, se împiedică, pentru că lumina nu este în el.

and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.'

11 D upă ce a spus acestea, le-a zis: – Lazăr, prietenul nostru, doarme, dar Mă duc să-l trezesc.

These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;'

12 U cenicii I-au zis: – Doamne, dacă doarme, atunci se va face bine!

therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;'

13 I sus vorbise însă despre moartea Lui, dar ei credeau că vorbeşte despre somnul obişnuit.

but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.

14 A tunci Isus le-a spus deschis: – Lazăr a murit.

Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died;

15 Ş i mă bucur pentru voi că n-am fost acolo, ca să credeţi. Dar să mergem la el!

and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;'

16 A tunci Toma, căruia i se zicea „Didimus“, le-a zis celorlalţi ucenici: „Să mergem şi noi să murim împreună cu El!“ Isus, învierea şi viaţa

therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go -- we also, that we may die with him,'

17 C ând a ajuns Isus, a aflat că Lazăr era deja de patru zile în mormânt.

Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.

18 B etania era aproape de Ierusalim, cam la cincisprezece stadii,

And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,

19 ş i mulţi dintre iudei veniseră la Marta şi la Maria ca să le consoleze pentru moartea fratelui lor.

and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;

20 C ând a auzit Marta că vine Isus, s-a dus să-L întâmpine. Maria însă şedea în casă.

Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.

21 M arta I-a zis lui Isus: – Doamne, dacă ai fi fost aici, n-ar fi murit fratele meu!

Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;

22 D ar şi acum ştiu că orice-I vei cere lui Dumnezeu, Dumnezeu Îţi va da!

but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;'

23 I sus i-a zis: – Fratele tău va învia!

Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.'

24 M arta I-a răspuns: – Ştiu că va învia la învierea din ziua de pe urmă.

Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;'

25 I sus i-a zis: – Eu sunt învierea şi viaţa. Cel ce crede în Mine va trăi chiar dacă moare.

Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;

26 Ş i oricine trăieşte şi crede în Mine nu va muri niciodată. Crezi lucrul acesta?

and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die -- to the age;

27 E a I-a răspuns: – Da, Doamne, cred că Tu eşti Cristosul, Fiul lui Dumnezeu, Cel Care urma să vină în lume!

believest thou this?' she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.'

28 Ş i spunând aceasta, s-a dus şi a chemat-o pe Maria, sora ei, zicându-i în şoaptă: „A sosit Învăţătorul şi te cheamă!“

And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;'

29 C um a auzit aceasta, Maria s-a ridicat repede şi s-a dus la El.

she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;

30 I sus încă nu intrase în sat, ci era tot în locul unde-L întâmpinase Marta.

and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;

31 I udeii care erau cu ea în casă şi o consolau, când au văzut că Maria se ridică repede şi iese, au urmat-o, crezând că se duce la mormânt, ca să plângă acolo.

the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying -- `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.'

32 M aria, când a ajuns unde era Isus şi L-a văzut, a căzut la picioarele Lui şi I-a zis: „Doamne, dacă ai fi fost aici, n-ar fi murit fratele meu!“

Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;'

33 I sus, când a văzut-o plângând, pe ea şi pe iudeii care veniseră cu ea, s-a înfiorat în duh şi s-a tulburat.

Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,

34 A întrebat: – Unde l-aţi pus? Ei I-au răspuns: – Doamne, vino şi vezi!

`Where have ye laid him?' they say to him, `Sir, come and see;'

35 I sus a început să plângă.

Jesus wept.

36 A tunci iudeii au zis: „Iată cât de mult îl iubea!“

The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!'

37 Î nsă unii dintre ei ziceau: „El, Care a deschis ochii orbului, nu putea face ca nici omul acesta să nu moară?“ Învierea lui Lazăr

and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?'

38 I sus s-a înfiorat din nou în Sine şi S-a dus la mormânt, care era o peşteră la intrarea căreia fusese pusă o piatră.

Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,

39 I sus a zis: „Daţi la o parte piatra!“ Marta, sora celui mort, I-a zis: – Doamne, deja miroase urât, căci este mort de patru zile!

Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;' the sister of him who hath died -- Martha -- saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;'

40 I sus i-a zis: – Nu ţi-am spus că, dacă crezi, vei vedea slava lui Dumnezeu?

Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?'

41 A u dat deci piatra la o parte. Isus Şi-a ridicat ochii şi a zis: „Tată, Îţi mulţumesc că M-ai ascultat!

They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;

42 Ş tiam că întotdeauna Mă asculţi, dar am spus aceasta din pricina mulţimii care stă împrejur, pentru ca ei să creadă că Tu M-ai trimis.“

and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said, that they may believe that Thou didst send me.'

43 D upă ce a spus acestea, a strigat cu glas tare: „Lazăr, vino afară!“

And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;'

44 M ortul a ieşit cu picioarele şi mâinile legate cu fâşii de pânză şi cu faţa înfăşurată într-un ştergar. Isus le-a zis: „Dezlegaţi-l şi lăsaţi-l să meargă!“ Uneltire împotriva lui Isus

and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.'

45 M ulţi dintre iudeii care au venit la Maria şi care au văzut ce a făcut Isus, au crezut în El.

Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;

46 D ar unii dintre ei s-au dus la farisei şi le-au spus ce făcuse Isus.

but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;

47 C onducătorii preoţilor şi fariseii au adunat Sinedriul şi au zis: – Ce să facem? Omul Acesta face multe semne.

the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs?

48 D acă-L lăsăm să continue aşa, toţi vor crede în El şi vor veni romanii şi ne vor nimici atât locul, cât şi neamul!

if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.'

49 Î nsă unul dintre ei, Caiafa, care era mare preot în anul acela, le-a zis: – Voi nu ştiţi nimic!

and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything,

50 N u vă daţi seama că este mai de folos pentru voi să moară un singur om pentru popor şi să nu piară întregul neam?!

nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.'

51 D ar nu a spus lucrul acesta de la el, ci, fiind mare preot în anul acela, a profeţit că Isus urma să moară pentru neam

And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,

52 ş i nu numai pentru neam, ci şi ca să-i adune laolaltă pe copiii lui Dumnezeu cei risipiţi.

and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.

53 A şadar, din ziua aceea au plănuit să-L omoare.

From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;

54 C a urmare, Isus nu mai umbla pe faţă printre iudei, ci a plecat de acolo în regiunea din apropierea pustiei, într-o cetate numită Efraim, şi a rămas acolo cu ucenicii.

Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.

55 P aştele iudeilor era aproape şi mulţi din ţinutul acela se suiau la Ierusalim înainte de Paşte ca să se curăţească.

And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;

56 E i Îl căutau pe Isus şi-şi spuneau unii altora, în timp ce stăteau în Templu: „Ce credeţi? Nu va veni la sărbătoare?“

they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you -- that he may not come to the feast?'

57 D ar conducătorii preoţilor şi fariseii dăduseră poruncă ca, dacă cineva ştie unde este, să le dea de ştire, astfel încât să-L poată aresta.

and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may shew, so that they may seize him.
