1 B en-Hadad, regele Aramului, şi-a strâns întreaga oştire. Însoţit de treizeci şi doi de regi, cu cai şi care, s-a dus, a înconjurat Samaria şi a început lupta împotriva ei.

And Ben-Hadad king of Aram hath gathered all his force, and thirty and two kings with him, and horse and chariot, and he goeth up and layeth siege against Samaria, and fighteth with it,

2 A trimis soli în cetate, la Ahab, regele lui Israel,

and sendeth messengers unto Ahab king of Israel, to the city,

3 c a să-i spună: „Aşa vorbeşte Ben-Hadad: «Argintul şi aurul tău sunt ale mele, soţiile şi cei mai buni dintre fiii tăi sunt ai mei!»“

and saith to him, `Thus said Ben-Hadad, `Thy silver and thy gold are mine, and thy wives and thy sons -- the best -- are mine.'

4 R egele lui Israel a răspuns: „O, rege, stăpânul meu, eu şi tot ceea ce am suntem ai tăi, precum ai spus!“

And the king of Israel answereth and saith, `According to thy word, my lord, O king: I thine, and all that I have.'

5 S olii s-au întors a doua oară şi i-au spus: „Aşa vorbeşte Ben-Hadad: «Trimisesem la tine ca să-mi dai argintul, aurul, soţiile şi fiii tăi.

And the messengers turn back and say, `Thus spake Ben-Hadad, saying, Surely I sent unto thee, saying, Thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy sons, to me thou dost give;

6 A şadar, mâine pe la această oră, ţi-i voi trimite pe slujitorii mei, care vor scotoci prin palatul tău şi prin casele slujitorilor tăi, vor pune mâna pe tot ce ai de valoare şi vor lua cu ei.»“

for if, at this time to-morrow, I send my servants unto thee then they have searched thy house, and the houses of thy servants, and it hath been, every desirable thing of thine eyes they place in their hand, and have taken away.'

7 R egele lui Israel i-a chemat pe toţi cei din sfatul bătrânilor ţării şi le-a zis: – Vedeţi cum acest om urmăreşte să ne facă rău, căci a trimis după soţiile, fiii, argintul şi aurul meu şi nu l-am refuzat!

And the king of Israel calleth to all the elders of the land, and saith, `Know, I pray you, and see that evil this is seeking, for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my sons, and for my silver, and for my gold, and I withheld not from him.'

8 – Nu-l asculta şi nu cădea la învoială, au răspuns toţi cei din sfatul bătrânilor şi tot poporul.

And all the elders and all the people say unto him, `Do not hearken, nor consent.'

9 A tunci Ahab le-a zis solilor lui Ben-Hadad: „Spuneţi-i stăpânului meu, regele: «Voi face tot ceea ce i-ai cerut slujitorului tău prima dată, dar acest lucru nu-l pot face!»“ Solii au plecat şi i-au dat regelui Ben-Hadad răspunsul lui Ahab.

And he saith to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, `Say to my lord the king, All that thou didst send for unto thy servant at the first I do, and this thing I am not able to do;' and the messengers go and take him back word.

10 B en-Hadad i-a trimis un alt mesaj lui Ahab şi i-a zis: „Zeii să se poarte cu mine cu toată asprimea dacă va rămâne în Samaria praf cât încape în mâna tuturor celor care mă urmează!“

And Ben-Hadad sendeth unto him, and saith, `Thus do the gods to me, and thus do they add, if the dust of Samaria suffice for handfuls for all the people who at my feet.'

11 R egele lui Israel a răspuns: „Spuneţi-i: «Cine încinge armele să nu se laude ca cel care le pune jos!»“

And the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Speak ye: let not him who is girding on boast himself as him who is loosing.'

12 B en-Hadad a primit acest mesaj în timp ce stătea la băut împreună cu regii, în tabără, şi le-a ordonat slujitorilor săi: „Pregătiţi-vă de atac!“ Şi ei s-au pregătit de atac împotriva cetăţii.

And it cometh to pass at the hearing of this word -- and he is drinking, he and the kings, in the booths -- that he saith unto his servants, `Set yourselves;' and they set themselves against the city.

13 Î ntre timp, un profet s-a apropiat de Ahab, regele lui Israel, şi i-a zis: – Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: „Vezi toată această mulţime mare? Astăzi o voi da în mâinile tale şi vei şti că Eu sunt Domnul!“

And lo, a certain prophet hath come nigh unto Ahab king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, `Hast thou seen all this great multitude? lo, I am giving it into thy hand to-day, and thou hast known that I Jehovah.'

14 – Prin cine? a întrebat Ahab. El a răspuns: – Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: „Prin slujitorii conducătorilor de provincii!“ – Şi cine va începe lupta? a întrebat Ahab. – Tu, i-a răspuns profetul.

And Ahab saith, `By whom?' and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, By the young men of the heads of the provinces;' and he saith, `Who doth direct the battle?' and he saith, `Thou.'

15 A hab i-a numărat pe slujitorii conducătorilor de provincii. Aceştia erau două sute treizeci şi doi. Apoi a numărat tot poporul, pe toţi israeliţii. Aceştia erau şapte mii.

And he inspecteth the young men of the heads of the provinces, and they are two hundred, two and thirty, and after them he hath inspecteth the whole of the people, all the sons of Israel, seven thousand,

16 E i au pornit pe la amiază, în timp ce Ben-Hadad se îmbăta în tabără împreună cu cei treizeci şi doi de regi care-l ajutau.

and they go out at noon, and Ben-Hadad is drinking -- drunk in the booths, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings, helping him.

17 M ai întâi au pornit slujitorii conducătorilor de provincii. Ben-Hadad a trimis nişte cercetaşi în recunoaştere, care l-au înştiinţat: – Au ieşit nişte bărbaţi din Samaria!

And the young men of the heads of the provinces go out at the first, and Ben-Hadad sendeth, and they declare to him, saying, `Men have come out of Samaria.'

18 – Dacă au ieşit pentru pace, le-a zis Ben-Hadad, prindeţi-i vii, iar dacă au ieşit pentru război, prindeţi-i tot vii!

And he saith, `If for peace they have come out -- catch them alive; and if for battle they have come out -- alive catch them.'

19 S lujitorii conducătorilor de provincii au ieşit din cetate împreună cu oştirea care-i urma

And these have gone out of the city -- the young men of the heads of the provinces -- and the force that after them,

20 ş i fiecare l-a lovit pe omul dinaintea lui. Arameii au luat-o la fugă, iar israeliţii i-au urmărit. Însă Ben-Hadad a scăpat pe un cal împreună cu nişte călăreţi.

and smite each his man, and Aram fleeth, and Israel pursueth them, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram escapeth on a horse, and the horsemen;

21 R egele lui Israel a înaintat şi a atacat caii şi carele, provocându-le arameilor o mare înfrângere. Confruntarea dintre Israel şi Aram: a doua biruinţă a lui Ahab

and the king of Israel goeth out, and smiteth the horses, and the charioteers, and hath smitten among the Aramaeans a great smiting.

22 A poi, profetul s-a apropiat de regele lui Israel şi i-a zis: „Du-te şi întăreşte-te! Cercetează şi vezi ce trebuie să faci, pentru că regele Aramului te va ataca din nou primăvara viitoare!“

And the prophet cometh nigh unto the king of Israel, and saith to him, `Go, strengthen thyself, and know and see that which thou dost, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram is coming up against thee.'

23 S lujitorii regelui Aramului i-au spus acestuia: „Dumnezeul lor este un Dumnezeu al munţilor; de aceea au fost mai tari decât noi. Dar dacă ne vom lupta cu ei în câmpie, cu siguranţă vom fi mai tari decât ei.

And the servants of the king of Aram said unto him, `Gods of hills their gods, therefore they were stronger than we; and yet, we fight with them in the plain -- are we not stronger than they?

24 F ă acest lucru: îndepărtează-i pe regi de la posturile lor şi înlocuieşte-i cu căpetenii.

`And this thing do thou: turn aside the kings each out of his place, and set captains in their stead;

25 P regăteşte-ţi, de asemenea, o oştire la fel de numeroasă ca aceea pe care ai pierdut-o, cu tot atâţia cai şi tot atâtea care şi să ne luptăm cu ei în câmpie. Atunci cu siguranţă vom fi mai tari decât ei!“ El i-a ascultat şi a făcut întocmai.

and thou, number to thee a force as the force that is fallen from thee, and horse for horse, and chariot for chariot, and we fight with them in the plain; are we not stronger than they?' and he hearkeneth to their voice, and doth so.

26 P rimăvara următoare, Ben-Hadad i-a strâns pe aramei şi s-a suit la Afek, ca să lupte împotriva lui Israel.

And it cometh to pass at the turn of the year, that Ben-Hadad inspecteth the Aramaeans, and goeth up to Aphek, to battle with Israel,

27 D upă ce au fost strânşi şi li s-au dat provizii, israeliţii au mărşăluit ca să-i întâmpine şi şi-au aşezat tabăra în faţa lor ca două turme mici de capre, pe când arameii umpleau ţara.

and the sons of Israel have been inspected, and supported, and go to meet them, and the sons of Israel encamp before them, like two flocks of goats, and the Aramaeans have filled the land.

28 U n om al lui Dumnezeu s-a apropiat de regele lui Israel şi i-a zis: „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Pentru că arameii au spus că Domnul este un Dumnezeu al munţilor, nu şi un Dumnezeu al văilor, voi da această oştire numeroasă în mâinile tale şi veţi şti că Eu sunt Domnul!»“

And there cometh nigh a man of God, and speaketh unto the king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Because that the Aramaeans have said, God of hills Jehovah, and He not God of valleys -- I have given the whole of this great multitude into thy hand, and ye have known that I Jehovah.'

29 T imp de şapte zile au rămas în taberele lor unii în faţa altora, iar în ziua a şaptea au început lupta. Israeliţii au omorât o sută de mii de pedestraşi aramei într-o zi.

And they encamp one over-against another seven days, and it cometh to pass on the seventh day, that the battle draweth near, and the sons of Israel smite Aram -- a hundred thousand footmen in one day.

30 C eilalţi au fugit în cetatea Afek, unde zidul s-a prăbuşit peste douăzeci şi şapte de mii dintre ei. Ben-Hadad a fugit în cetate şi s-a ascuns într-o odaie interioară.

And those left flee to Aphek, unto the city, and the wall falleth on twenty and seven chief men who are left, and Ben-Hadad hath fled, and cometh in unto the city, into the innermost part.

31 S lujitorii săi i-au zis: „Am auzit că regii Casei lui Israel sunt îndurători. Dă-ne voie să ne punem saci pe coapse, să ne legăm cu funii la cap şi să mergem la regele lui Israel! Poate că îţi va cruţa viaţa.“

And his servants say unto him, `Lo, we pray thee, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel -- that they are kind kings; let us put, we pray thee, sackcloth on our loins, and ropes on our heads, and we go out unto the king of Israel; it may be he doth keep thee alive.'

32 E i şi-au înfăşurat saci pe coapse şi s-au legat cu funii la cap, după care s-au dus la regele lui Israel şi i-au zis: – Slujitorul tău Ben-Hadad te roagă: „Cruţă-mi viaţa!“ – Mai este încă în viaţă? a întrebat Ahab. Atunci este fratele meu!

And they gird sackcloth on their loins, and ropes on their heads, and they come in unto the king of Israel, and say, `Thy servant Ben-Hadad hath said, Let me live, I pray thee;' and he saith, `Is he yet alive? he my brother.'

33 A ceşti oameni au luat aceste cuvinte ca un semn bun şi s-au grăbit să răspundă spunând: – Da, fratele tău Ben-Hadad! – Duceţi-vă şi aduceţi-l la mine, le-a zis Ahab. Ben-Hadad a venit la el, iar Ahab l-a suit în carul lui.

And the men observe diligently, and hasten, and catch it from him, and say, `Thy brother Ben-Hadad;' and he saith, `Go ye in, bring him;' and Ben-Hadad cometh out unto him, and he causeth him to come up on the chariot.

34 A poi Ben-Hadad i-a spus: – Îţi voi înapoia cetăţile pe care tatăl meu le-a luat de la tatăl tău şi vei putea să-ţi faci pieţe în Damasc, aşa cum a făcut tatăl meu în Samaria. – Eu îţi voi da drumul, încheind un legământ cu tine, i-a spus Ahab. Astfel, după ce a încheiat un legământ cu el, Ahab i-a dat drumul.

And he saith unto him, `The cities that my father took from thy father, I give back, and streets thou dost make for thee in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria;' -- `and I, with a covenant, send thee away;' and he maketh with him a covenant, and sendeth him away.

35 U nul din fiii profeţilor i-a spus confratelui său prin Cuvântul Domnului: „Loveşte-mă!“ Dar acesta nu a vrut să-l lovească.

And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour by the word of Jehovah, `Smite me, I pray thee;' and the man refuseth to smite him,

36 „ Pentru că n-ai ascultat de Cuvântul Domnului, i-a zis profetul, când vei pleca de la mine, te va omorî un leu.“ Şi după ce a plecat de la el, a întâlnit un leu care l-a omorât.

and he saith to him, `Because that thou hast not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, lo, thou art going from me, and the lion hath smitten thee;' and he goeth from him, and the lion findeth him, and smiteth him.

37 P rofetul a găsit un alt om şi i-a spus: „Loveşte-mă!“ Acel om l-a lovit şi l-a rănit.

And he findeth another man, and saith, `Smite me, I pray thee;' and the man smiteth him, smiting and wounding,

38 A poi profetul s-a dus şi l-a aşteptat pe rege, pe marginea drumului. El s-a deghizat acoperindu-şi ochii cu un bandaj.

and the prophet goeth and standeth for the king on the way, and disguiseth himself with ashes on his eyes.

39 C ând regele a trecut pe acolo, el a strigat şi i-a spus regelui: – În timp ce slujitorul tău era în toiul bătăliei, un bărbat a venit şi mi-a adus un captiv, spunându-mi: „Păzeşte-l pe acest om. Dacă va scăpa, vei răspunde cu viaţa pentru el sau vei plăti un talant de argint!“

And it cometh to pass -- the king is passing by -- that he hath cried unto the king, and saith, `Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle, and lo, a man hath turned aside and bringeth in unto me a man, and saith, Keep this man; if he be at all missing, then hath thy life been for his life, or a talent of silver thou dost weigh out;

40 D ar pe când slujitorul tău făcea câte ceva încoace şi încolo, el a dispărut. – Aceasta îţi este osânda, i-a răspuns regele lui Israel. Tu însuţi ai rostit-o.

and it cometh to pass, thy servant is working hither and thither, and he is not!' and the king of Israel saith unto him, Right thy judgment; thou hast determined.'

41 Î ndată profetul şi-a dat jos bandajul de pe ochi, iar regele lui Israel l-a recunoscut că era dintre profeţi.

And he hasteth and turneth aside the ashes from off his eyes, and the king of Israel discerneth him, that he of the prophets,

42 – Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, i-a spus el regelui: „Pentru că i-ai dat drumul omului pe care-l sortisem nimicirii, vei răspunde cu viaţa ta pentru viaţa lui şi cu poporul tău pentru poporul lui.“

and he saith unto him, `Thus said Jehovah, Because thou hast sent away the man I devoted, out of hand, even thy life hath been for his life, and thy people for his people;'

43 R egele lui Israel s-a dus şi a intrat supărat şi mâniat în palatul său din Samaria.

and the king of Israel goeth unto his house, sulky and wroth, and cometh in to Samaria.
