1 D upă aceea, Nahaş, regele amoniţilor, a murit, iar în locul lui a domnit fiul său.

And it cometh to pass after this, that Nahash king of the sons of Ammon dieth, and his son reigneth in his stead,

2 D avid a zis: „Voi da dovadă de loialitate faţă de Hanun, fiul lui Nahaş, căci şi tatăl său a dat dovadă de loialitate faţă de mine.“ David a trimis soli ca să-l mângâie sufleteşte pe Hanun pentru moartea tatălui său. Când slujitorii lui David au ajuns în ţara amoniţilor, la Hanun, ca să-l mângâie sufleteşte,

and David saith, `I do kindness with Hanun son of Nahash, for his father did with me kindness;' and David sendeth messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And the servants of David come in unto the land of the sons of Ammon, unto Hanun, to comfort him,

3 c ăpeteniile amonite i-au zis lui Hanun: „Chiar crezi că David doreşte să-l cinstească pe tatăl tău, trimiţându-ţi aceşti oameni ca să te mângâie sufleteşte? Slujitorii lui au venit la tine mai degrabă ca să cerceteze, să iscodească şi să cucerească ţara.“

and the heads of the sons of Ammon say to Hanun, `Is David honouring thy father, in thine eyes, because he hath sent to thee comforters? in order to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out, the land, have not his servants come in unto thee?'

4 H anun i-a luat pe slujitorii lui David, i-a ras, le-a tăiat hainele pe jumătate, până la brâu, şi le-a dat drumul,

And Hanun taketh the servants of David, and shaveth them, and cutteth their long robes in the midst, unto the buttocks, and sendeth them away.

5 a stfel că ei au plecat. Când David a fost înştiinţat despre ce li s-a întâmplat bărbaţilor acelora, a trimis să le spună bărbaţilor care au fost atât de mult umiliţi: „Rămâneţi în Ierihon până vă va creşte din nou barba şi apoi să vă întoarceţi!”

And go, and declare to David concerning the men, and he sendeth to meet them -- for the men have been greatly ashamed -- and the king saith, `Dwell in Jericho till that your beard is grown, then ye have returned.'

6 V ăzând că se făcuseră urâţi lui David, Hanun şi amoniţii au trimis o mie de talanţi de argint ca să tocmească care şi călăreţi din Aram-Naharayim, din regatul arameu al Maacăi şi din Ţoba.

And the sons of Ammon see that they have made themselves abhorred by David, and Hanun and the sons of Ammon send a thousand talents of silver, to hire to them, from Aram-Naharaim, and from Aram-Maachah, and from Zobah, chariots and horsemen;

7 A u tocmit astfel treizeci şi două de mii de care şi pe regele din Maaca cu oştirea lui. Aceştia au venit şi şi-au aşezat tabăra la Medeba, iar amoniţii s-au strâns din cetăţile lor, ca să meargă la război.

and they hire to them two and thirty thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, and they come in and encamp before Medeba, and the sons of Ammon have been gathered out of their cities, and come in to the battle.

8 C ând a auzit David acest lucru, l-a trimis împotriva lor pe Ioab împreună cu toată oştirea, numai războinici viteji.

And David heareth, and sendeth Joab, and all the host of the mighty men,

9 A moniţii au ieşit din cetate şi şi-au ocupat poziţiile de luptă la intrarea cetăţii, în timp ce regii care au venit să-i ajute s-au aşezat în câmp deschis.

and the sons of Ammon come out and set battle in array at the opening of the city, and the kings who have come by themselves in the field.

10 I oab a văzut că avea de luptat şi în faţă şi în spate. Prin urmare, a ales o parte dintre vitejii lui Israel şi i-a mobilizat împotriva arameilor,

And Joab seeth that the front of the battle hath been unto him, before and behind, and he chooseth out of all the choice in Israel, and setteth in array to meet Aram,

11 i ar restul oştirii a pus-o sub comanda fratelui său Abişai, mobilizând-o împotriva amoniţilor.

and the remnant of the people he hath given into the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set in array to meet the sons of Ammon.

12 I oab i-a zis lui Abişai: „Dacă arameii mă copleşesc, să-mi vii în ajutor, iar dacă amoniţii te copleşesc, te voi ajuta eu.

And he saith, `If Aram be stronger than I, then thou hast been to me for salvation; and if the sons of Ammon be stronger than thou, then I have saved thee;

13 F ii tare şi îmbărbătează-te pentru poporul nostru şi pentru cetăţile Dumnezeului nostru şi facă-se voia Domnului!“

be strong, and we strengthen ourselves, for our people, and for the cities of our God, and Jehovah doth that which is good in His eyes.'

14 C ând Ioab i-a atacat pe aramei cu oştirea lui, aceştia au fugit dinaintea lor.

And Joab draweth nigh, and the people who with him, before Aram to battle, and they flee from his face;

15 A moniţii, văzând că arameii dau bir cu fugiţii, au fugit şi ei dinaintea lui Abişai, fratele lui Ioab, şi s-au retras în cetate. Apoi Ioab s-a întors la Ierusalim.

and the sons of Ammon have seen that Aram hath fled, and they flee -- they also -- from the face of Abishai his brother, and go in to the city. And Joab cometh in to Jerusalem.

16 V ăzând că au fost învinşi de Israel, arameii au trimis mesageri şi i-au adus pe arameii de dincolo de râu, aceştia avându-l în fruntea lor pe Şofac, conducătorul oştirii lui Hadad-Ezer.

And Aram seeth that they have been smitten before Israel, and send messengers, and bring out Aram that beyond the River, and Shophach head of the host of Hadarezer before them.

17 C ând a aflat David acest lucru, i-a adunat pe toţi israeliţii, a trecut Iordanul, le-a ieşit înainte şi a ocupat poziţii de luptă împotriva lor. David a ocupat poziţii de luptă împotriva arameilor şi s-au încleştat în luptă.

And it is declared to David, and he gathereth all Israel, and passeth over the Jordan, and cometh in unto them, and setteth in array against them; yea, David setteth in array the battle to meet Aram, and they fight with him;

18 A rameii au fugit dinaintea lui Israel. David le-a ucis arameilor şapte mii de oameni care conduceau carele şi patruzeci de mii de pedestraşi. L-a mai ucis şi pe Şofac, conducătorul oştirii lor.

and Aram fleeth from the face of Israel, and David slayeth of Aram seven thousand charioteers, and forty thousand footmen, and Shophach head of the host he hath put to death.

19 V ăzând că au fost învinşi de Israel, vasalii lui Hadad-Ezer au făcut pace cu David şi i s-au supus. Şi arameii n-au mai îndrăznit să-i ajute pe amoniţi.

And the servants of Hadarezer see that they have been smitten before Israel, and they make peace with David and serve him, and Aram hath not been willing to help the sons of Ammon any more.
