1 D omnul l-a trimis pe Natan la David. Acesta, ajungând la David, i-a zis: – Într-o anume cetate trăiau doi oameni; unul era bogat, iar celălalt era sărac.

And Jehovah sendeth Nathan unto David, and he cometh unto him, and saith to him: `Two men have been in one city; One rich and one poor;

2 C el bogat avea un mare număr de oi şi vite.

The rich hath flocks and herds very many;

3 C el sărac însă nu avea altceva decât o mieluşea pe care o cumpărase. Avea grijă de ea, iar aceasta creştea împreună cu el şi cu copiii săi. Mânca din aceeaşi bucată de pâine cu el, bea din cana lui şi dormea la pieptul său; îi era ca o fiică.

And the poor one hath nothing, Except one little ewe-lamb, Which he hath bought, and keepeth alive, And it groweth up with him, And with his sons together; Of his morsel it eateth, And from his cup it drinketh, And in his bosom it lieth, And it is to him as a daughter;

4 L a omul bogat a venit un călător, dar el nu s-a îndurat să ia din oile şi vitele lui pentru a-i pregăti să mănânce. În schimb, a luat mieluşeaua omului sărac şi i-a pregătit-o celui care venise la el.

And there cometh a traveller to the rich man, And he spareth to take Of his own flock, and of his own herd, To prepare for the traveller Who hath come to him, And he taketh the ewe-lamb of the poor man, And prepareth it for the man Who hath come unto him.'

5 D avid s-a aprins foarte tare de mânie pe omul acela şi i-a zis lui Natan: – Viu este Domnul că omul care a făcut acest lucru este vrednic de moarte!

And the anger of David burneth against the man exceedingly, and he saith unto Nathan, `Jehovah liveth, surely a son of death the man who is doing this,

6 S ă dea înapoi patru mieluşele, pentru că a săvârşit fapta aceasta şi pentru că nu a arătat milă.

and the ewe-lamb he doth repay fourfold, because that he hath done this thing, and because that he had no pity.'

7 A tunci Natan i-a zis: – Tu eşti omul acela! Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: „Te-am uns rege peste Israel şi te-am scăpat din mâna lui Saul.

And Nathan saith unto David, `Thou the man! Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I anointed thee for king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

8 Ţ i-am dat Casa stăpânului tău şi ţi-am pus în braţe soţiile stăpânului tău; ţi-am dat Casa lui Israel şi a lui Iuda. Şi dacă toate acestea ar fi fost prea puţin, aş mai fi adăugat şi altele.

and I give to thee the house of thy lord, and the wives of thy lord, into thy bosom, and I give to thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if little, then I add to thee such and such.

9 D e ce ai dispreţuit Cuvântul Domnului şi ai păcătuit împotriva Lui? L-ai ucis pe hititul Urie cu sabia, iar pe soţia lui ai luat-o să-ţi fie soţie. L-ai ucis pe Urie cu sabia amoniţilor.

`Wherefore hast thou despised the word of Jehovah, to do the evil thing in His eyes? Uriah the Hittite thou hast smitten by the sword, and his wife thou hast taken to thee for a wife, and him thou hast slain by the sword of the Bene-Ammon.

10 D e aceea sabia nu se va îndepărta din familia ta niciodată, pentru că M-ai dispreţuit şi ai luat-o pe soţia hititului Urie să-ţi fie ţie soţie.“

`And now, the sword doth not turn aside from thy house unto the age, because thou hast despised Me, and dost take the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be to thee for a wife;

11 A şa vorbeşte Domnul: „Voi ridica nenorocirea asupra ta din propria ta familie. Îţi voi lua soţiile sub privirea ta şi le voi da altuia, iar el se va culca cu ele la lumina zilei.

thus said Jehovah, Lo, I am raising up against thee evil, out of thy house, and have taken thy wives before thine eyes, and given to thy neighbour, and he hath lain with thy wives before the eyes of this sun;

12 T u ai lucrat în ascuns, însă eu voi împlini acest cuvânt la lumina zilei, înaintea întregului Israel.“

for thou hast done in secret, and I do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.'

13 D avid i-a zis lui Natan: – Am păcătuit împotriva Domnului. – Domnul ţi-a iertat păcatul, i-a răspuns Natan, şi nu vei muri.

And David saith unto Nathan, `I have sinned against Jehovah.' And Nathan saith unto David, `Also -- Jehovah hath caused thy sin to pass away; thou dost not die;

14 T otuşi, pentru că prin fapta aceasta ai făcut pe duşmanii Domnului să-L dispreţuiască, copilul care ţi s-a născut va muri. Copilul născut de Batşeba moare

only, because thou hast caused the enemies of Jehovah greatly to despise by this thing, also the son who is born to thee doth surely die.'

15 N atan a plecat acasă, iar Domnul a lovit copilul pe care i-l născuse soţia lui Urie lui David şi s-a îmbolnăvit grav.

And Nathan goeth unto his house, and Jehovah smiteth the lad, whom the wife of Uriah hath born to David, and it is incurable;

16 D avid s-a rugat lui Dumnezeu pentru copil şi a postit, apoi a intrat în palat şi a stat culcat la pământ toată noaptea.

and David seeketh God for the youth, and David keepeth a fast, and hath gone in and lodged, and lain on the earth.

17 S fetnicii palatului lui au stăruit de el să se ridice de la pământ, dar el nu a dorit şi nici n-a vrut să mănânce cu ei.

And the elders of his house rise against him, to raise him up from the earth, and he hath not been willing, nor hath he eaten with them bread;

18 Î n ziua a şaptea, copilul a murit. Slujitorii lui David s-au temut însă să-i spună lucrul acesta pentru că îşi ziceau: „Când copilul trăia încă, îi vorbeam, dar el nu ne asculta. Cum să îndrăznim să-i spunem că a murit copilul? Şi-ar face mai mult rău.“

and it cometh to pass on the seventh day, that the lad dieth, and the servants of David fear to declare to him that the lad is dead, for they said, `Lo, in the lad being alive we spake unto him, and he did not hearken to our voice; and how do we say unto him, The lad is dead? -- then he hath done evil.'

19 D avid a observat că slujitorii săi şuşoteau între ei şi a înţeles că a murit copilul. El i-a întrebat: – A murit copilul? – Da, a murit, i-au răspuns ei.

And David seeth that his servants are whispering, and David understandeth that the lad is dead, and David saith unto his servants, `Is the lad dead?' and they say, `Dead.'

20 A tunci David s-a ridicat de la pământ, s-a spălat, s-a uns şi şi-a schimbat hainele. Apoi a intrat în Casa Domnului şi s-a închinat. După aceea, întorcându-se acasă, a cerut să i se dea de mâncare şi a mâncat.

And David riseth from the earth, and doth bathe and anoint, and changeth his raiment, and cometh in to the house of Jehovah, and boweth himself, and cometh unto his house, and asketh and they place for him bread, and he eateth.

21 S lujitorii săi l-au întrebat: – Ce înseamnă ceea ce faci tu? Când trăia copilul posteai şi plângeai, iar acum, când copilul a murit, te ridici de la pământ şi mănânci?

And his servants say unto him, `What this thing thou hast done? because of the living lad thou hast fasted and dost weep, and when the lad is dead thou hast risen and dost eat bread.'

22 D avid le-a răspuns: – Când trăia copilul posteam şi plângeam pentru că îmi ziceam: „Cine ştie, poate Domnul îmi va arăta îndurare şi copilul va trăi.“

And he saith, `While the lad is alive I have fasted, and weep, for I said, Who knoweth? -- Jehovah doth pity me, and the lad hath lived;

23 D ar acum, că a murit, de ce să mai postesc? Aş putea oare să-l aduc înapoi? Eu voi merge la el, dar el nu se va mai întoarce la mine.

and now, he hath died, why this -- I fast? am I able to bring him back again? I am going unto him, and he doth not turn back unto me.'

24 D avid a mângâiat-o pe soţia sa, Batşeba. A intrat la ea şi ea a născut un fiu pe care l-au numit Solomon. Domnul îl iubea

And David comforteth Bath-Sheba his wife, and goeth in unto her, and lieth with her, and she beareth a son, and he calleth his name Solomon; and Jehovah hath loved him,

25 ş i de aceea El a transmis prin profetul Natan mesaj să-l numească Iedidia, de dragul Domnului. Amoniţii, subjugaţi de David

and sendeth by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and calleth his name Jedidiah, because of Jehovah.

26 Î ntre timp, Ioab a asediat Raba amoniţilor şi a pus stăpânire pe cetatea regală.

And Joab fighteth against Rabbah of the Bene-Ammon, and captureth the royal city,

27 A poi a trimis mesageri la David să-i spună: „Am luptat împotriva Rabei şi am pus stăpânire pe sursele de apă ale cetăţii.

and Joab sendeth messengers unto David, and saith, `I have fought against Rabbah -- also I have captured the city of waters;

28 A cum, strânge restul trupelor, asediază cetatea şi cucereşte-o, ca să n-o cuceresc eu şi să primească numele meu.“

and now, gather the rest of the people, and encamp against the city, and capture it, lest I capture the city, and my name hath been called upon it.'

29 D avid a strâns întreaga oştire, s-a îndreptat către Raba, a luptat împotriva ei şi a cucerit-o.

And David gathereth all the people, and goeth to Rabbah, and fighteth against it, and captureth it;

30 A luat de pe capul regelui lor coroana care cântărea un talant de aur şi care era împodobită cu pietre preţioase; ea a fost pusă pe capul lui David. Prada luată din cetate era foarte multă.

and he taketh the crown of their king from off his head, and its weight a talent of gold, and precious stones, and it is on the head of David; and the spoil of the city he hath brought out, very much;

31 P e locuitorii cetăţii i-a scos afară, i-a pus să muncească cu ferăstraie, cu grape de fier şi cu securi de fier şi i-a pus la făcut cărămizi. La fel a făcut el şi cu celelalte cetăţi amonite. Apoi David s-a întors la Ierusalim împreună cu întreaga oştire.

and the people who in it he hath brought out, and setteth to the saw, and to cutting instruments of iron, and to axes of iron, and hath caused them to pass over into the brick-kiln; and so he doth to all the cities of the Bene-Ammon; and David turneth back, and all the people, to Jerusalem.
