1 F oametea era grea în ţară.

And the famine severe in the land;

2 C ând au terminat de mâncat grânele pe care le aduseseră din Egipt, tatăl lor le-a zis: – Duceţi-vă din nou şi cumpăraţi-ne puţină mâncare.

and it cometh to pass, when they have finished eating the corn which they brought from Egypt, that their father saith unto them, `Turn back, buy for us a little food.'

3 D ar Iuda i-a răspuns: – Omul acela ne-a avertizat clar, spunându-ne: „Nu-mi veţi mai vedea faţa decât dacă fratele vostru va fi cu voi”.

And Judah speaketh unto him, saying, `The man protesting protested to us, saying, Ye do not see my face without your brother with you;

4 D acă-l vei trimite pe fratele nostru cu noi, ne vom duce şi-ţi vom cumpăra mâncare.

if thou art sending our brother with us, we go down, and buy for thee food,

5 D ar dacă nu-l vei trimite, nu ne vom duce, pentru că acel om ne-a zis: „Nu-mi veţi mai vedea faţa decât dacă fratele vostru va fi cu voi.”

and if thou art not sending -- we do not go down, for the man said unto us, Ye do not see my face without your brother with you.'

6 A tunci Israel le-a zis: – De ce v-aţi purtat aşa de rău cu mine şi i-aţi spus acelui om că mai aveţi un frate?

And Israel saith, `Why did ye evil to me, by declaring to the man that ye had yet a brother?'

7 E i i-au răspuns: – Omul acela ne-a pus întrebări amănunţite în legătură cu noi şi cu familia noastră, zicând: „Mai trăieşte tatăl vostru? Mai aveţi vreun frate?” Noi i-am răspuns la aceste întrebări. De unde era să ştim că ne va cere să-l aducem pe fratele nostru?

and they say, `The man asked diligently concerning us, and concerning our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye a brother? and we declare to him according to the tenor of these things; do we certainly know that he will say, Bring down your brother?'

8 A tunci Iuda i-a zis tatălui său, Israel: – Trimite băiatul cu mine; vom pleca imediat, pentru ca noi, tu şi copiii noştri să trăim şi să nu murim.

And Judah saith unto Israel his father, `Send the youth with me, and we arise, and go, and live, and do not die, both we, and thou, and our infants.

9 E u însumi voi răspunde pentru el; din mâna mea îl vei cere. Dacă nu ţi-l voi aduce înapoi şi dacă nu-l voi pune înaintea ta, voi fi vinovat înaintea ta toată viaţa.

I -- I am surety him, from my hand thou dost require him; if I have not brought him in unto thee, and set him before thee -- then I have sinned against thee all the days;

10 D acă n-am fi întârziat, cu siguranţă că ne-am fi întors de două ori până acum.

for if we had not lingered, surely now we had returned these two times.'

11 A tunci, tatăl lor, Israel, le-a zis: – Dacă aşa trebuie, atunci aşa să faceţi. Luaţi cu voi câteva dintre cele mai alese produse ale ţării şi duceţi-le ca dar acelui om: puţin balsam, puţină miere, condimente, smirnă, fistic şi migdale.

And Israel their father saith unto them, `If so, now, this do: take of the praised thing of the land in your vessels, and take down to the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts and almonds;

12 L uaţi de două ori mai mult argint, pentru că trebuie să daţi înapoi argintul care a fost pus la gura sacilor voştri. Poate a fost o greşeală.

and double money take in your hand, even the money which is brought back in the mouth of your bags, ye take back in your hand, it may be it an oversight.

13 L uaţi-l şi pe fratele vostru şi mergeţi din nou la omul acela.

`And take your brother, and rise, turn back unto the man;

14 D umnezeul cel Atotputernic să vă dea milă înaintea acelui om, pentru ca el să-i trimită înapoi pe celălalt frate al vostru şi pe Beniamin. Cât despre mine, dacă trebuie să fiu lipsit de copii, atunci lipsit să fiu.

and God Almighty give to you mercies before the man, so that he hath sent to you your other brother and Benjamin; and I, when I am bereaved -- I am bereaved.'

15 O amenii au luat cu ei darul, argintul – de două ori mai mult – şi pe Beniamin, s-au dus în Egipt şi s-au prezentat înaintea lui Iosif.

And the men take this present, double money also they have taken in their hand, and Benjamin; and they rise, and go down to Egypt, and stand before Joseph;

16 C ând l-a văzut pe Beniamin cu ei, Iosif i-a poruncit administratorului gospodăriei sale: „Condu-i pe aceşti oameni înăuntru, taie un animal şi pregăteşte-l, pentru că vor prânzi împreună cu mine.“

and Joseph seeth Benjamin with them, and saith to him who over his house, `Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal, and make ready, for with me do the men eat at noon.'

17 A dministratorul a făcut aşa cum i-a poruncit Iosif şi i-a condus pe oameni în palatul lui Iosif.

And the man doth as Joseph hath said, and the man bringeth in the men into the house of Joseph,

18 L or le-a fost frică, pentru că au fost duşi în palatul lui Iosif şi şi-au zis: „Am fost aduşi înăuntru din cauza argintului care a fost pus în sacii noştri prima dată, pentru ca să ne atace, să ne biruiască, să ne înrobească şi să ne ia măgarii.“

and the men are afraid because they have been brought into the house of Joseph, and they say, `For the matter of the money which was put back in our bags at the commencement are we brought in -- to roll himself upon us, and to throw himself on us, and to take us for servants -- our asses also.'

19 E i s-au apropiat de administratorul gospodăriei lui Iosif şi au vorbit cu el la intrarea în palat.

And they come nigh unto the man who over the house of Joseph, and speak unto him at the opening of the house,

20 E i i-au zis: – Iartă-ne, domnul nostru … noi am mai venit o dată aici să cumpărăm mâncare,

and say, `O, my lord, we really come down at the commencement to buy food;

21 d ar când am ajuns la locul unde am înnoptat şi ne-am deschis sacii, am găsit la gura sacilor fiecăruia tot argintul nostru. Aşa că l-am adus înapoi.

and it cometh to pass, when we have come in unto the lodging-place, and open our bags, that lo, each one's money in the mouth of his bag, our money in its weight, and we bring it back in our hand;

22 A m mai adus cu noi şi alt argint ca să cumpărăm mâncare. Nu ştim cine ne-a pus argintul înapoi în saci.

and other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food; we have not known who put our money in our bags.'

23 E l le-a răspuns: – Totul este în ordine, nu vă temeţi. Dumnezeul vostru, Dumnezeul tatălui vostru, v-a pus o comoară în saci; eu am primit argintul vostru. Apoi l-a adus la ei şi pe Simeon.

And he saith, `Peace to you, fear not: your God and the God of your father hath given to you hidden treasure in your bags, your money came unto me;' and he bringeth out Simeon unto them.

24 A dministratorul i-a condus pe oameni în palatul lui Iosif şi le-a dat apă ca să-şi spele picioarele şi nutreţ pentru măgari.

And the man bringeth in the men into Joseph's house, and giveth water, and they wash their feet; and he giveth provender for their asses,

25 E i au pregătit darul pentru Iosif care urma să vină la prânz, pentru că au auzit că vor mânca acolo.

and they prepare the present until the coming of Joseph at noon, for they have heard that there they do eat bread.

26 C ând Iosif a venit acasă, ei i-au oferit darul pe care-l aduseseră în palat şi s-au prosternat înaintea lui.

And Joseph cometh into the house, and they bring to him the present which in their hand, into the house, and bow themselves to him, to the earth;

27 E l i-a întrebat de sănătate şi le-a zis: – Este sănătos bătrânul vostru tată despre care mi-aţi vorbit? Mai trăieşte?

and he asketh of them of peace, and saith, `Is your father well? the aged man of whom ye have spoken, is he yet alive?'

28 E i i-au răspuns: – Da, slujitorul tău, tatăl nostru, este sănătos! Mai trăieşte! Apoi s-au plecat şi i s-au închinat.

and they say, `Thy servant our father well, he is yet alive;' and they bow, and do obeisance.

29 E l l-a observat pe fratele său Beniamin, fiul mamei sale, şi a întrebat: „Acesta este fratele vostru mai mic despre care mi-aţi vorbit?“ Apoi a adăugat: „Dumnezeu să-ţi dea har, fiule!“

And he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth Benjamin his brother, his mother's son, and saith, `Is this your young brother, of whom ye have spoken unto me?' and he saith, `God favour thee, my son.'

30 F iind foarte emoţionat la vederea fratelui său, Iosif a ieşit în grabă şi a căutat un loc unde să plângă. A intrat într-o cameră şi a plâns acolo.

And Joseph hasteth, for his bowels have been moved for his brother, and he seeketh to weep, and entereth the inner chamber, and weepeth there;

31 A poi şi-a spălat faţa, a revenit şi, stăpânindu-se, a poruncit: „Aduceţi de mâncare!“

and he washeth his face, and goeth out, and refraineth himself, and saith, `Place bread.'

32 P e el l-au servit separat, pe fraţii săi, separat, iar pe egiptenii care mâncau împreună cu el, separat, pentru că egiptenii nu puteau mânca cu evreii, aceasta fiind pentru ei o urâciune.

And they place for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians who are eating with him by themselves: for the Egyptians are unable to eat bread with the Hebrews, for it an abomination to the Egyptians.

33 F raţii săi s-au aşezat înaintea lui, în ordinea vârstei, de la întâiul născut până la cel mai tânăr şi se uitau unii la alţii cu mirare.

And they sit before him, the first-born according to his birthright, and the young one according to his youth, and the men wonder one at another;

34 L i s-a servit câte o porţie de la masa lui Iosif, dar porţia lui Beniamin era de cinci ori mai mare decât a celorlalţi. Ei au băut şi s-au bucurat împreună cu el.

and he lifteth up gifts from before him unto them, and the gift of Benjamin is five hands more than the gifts of all of them; and they drink, yea, they drink abundantly with him.
