1 F oametea bîntuia greu în ţară.

And the famine severe in the land;

2 C înd au isprăvit de mîncat grîul, pe care -l aduseseră din Egipt, Iacov a zis fiilor săi:,, Duceţi-vă iarăş, şi cumpăraţi-ne ceva merinde.``

and it cometh to pass, when they have finished eating the corn which they brought from Egypt, that their father saith unto them, `Turn back, buy for us a little food.'

3 I uda i -a răspuns:,, Omul acela ne -a spus curat:, Să nu-mi mai vedeţi faţa, dacă fratele vostru nu va fi cu voi.`

And Judah speaketh unto him, saying, `The man protesting protested to us, saying, Ye do not see my face without your brother with you;

4 D acă vrei deci să trimeţi pe fratele nostru cu noi, ne vom pogorî, şi-ţi vom cumpăra merinde.

if thou art sending our brother with us, we go down, and buy for thee food,

5 D ar dacă nu vrei să -l trimeţi, nu ne vom pogorî, căci omul acela ne -a spus:,, Să nu-mi mai vedeţi faţa, dacă fratele vostru nu va fi cu voi!``

and if thou art not sending -- we do not go down, for the man said unto us, Ye do not see my face without your brother with you.'

6 I srael a zis atunci:,, Pentruce mi-aţi făcut un astfel de rău, şi aţi spus omului aceluia că mai aveţi un frate?``

And Israel saith, `Why did ye evil to me, by declaring to the man that ye had yet a brother?'

7 E i au răspuns:,, Omul acela ne -a întrebat despre noi şi familia noastră, şi a zis:, Mai trăieşte tatăl vostru? Mai aveţi vreun frate?` Şi noi am răspuns la întrebările acestea. Puteam noi să ştim că are să zică:, Aduceţi pe fratele vostru?``

and they say, `The man asked diligently concerning us, and concerning our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye a brother? and we declare to him according to the tenor of these things; do we certainly know that he will say, Bring down your brother?'

8 I uda a zis tatălui său Israel:, Trimete copilul cu mine, ca să ne sculăm şi să plecăm, şi vom trăi şi nu vom muri, noi, tu şi copiii noştri.

And Judah saith unto Israel his father, `Send the youth with me, and we arise, and go, and live, and do not die, both we, and thou, and our infants.

9 R ăspund eu pentru el; ai să -l ceri înapoi din mîna mea. Dacă nu -l voi aduce înapoi la tine, şi dacă nu -l voi pune înaintea ta, vinovat să fiu faţă de tine pentru totdeauna.

I -- I am surety him, from my hand thou dost require him; if I have not brought him in unto thee, and set him before thee -- then I have sinned against thee all the days;

10 C ăci dacă n'am mai fi zăbovit, de două ori ne-am fi întors pînă acum.``

for if we had not lingered, surely now we had returned these two times.'

11 I srael, tatăl lor, le -a zis:,, Fiindcă trebuie, faceţi aşa. Luaţi-vă în saci ceva din cele mai bune roade ale ţării, ca să duceţi un dar omului aceluia, şi anume: puţin leac alinător, şi puţină miere, mirodenii, smirnă, fisticuri şi migdale.

And Israel their father saith unto them, `If so, now, this do: take of the praised thing of the land in your vessels, and take down to the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts and almonds;

12 L uaţi cu voi argint îndoit, şi duceţi înapoi argintul, pe care vi -l puseseră la gura sacilor: poate că a fost o greşeală.

and double money take in your hand, even the money which is brought back in the mouth of your bags, ye take back in your hand, it may be it an oversight.

13 L uaţi şi pe fratele vostru, sculaţi-vă şi întoarceţi-vă la omul acela.

`And take your brother, and rise, turn back unto the man;

14 D umnezeul Cel Atotputernic să vă facă să căpătaţi trecere înaintea omului aceluia, şi să lase să se întoarcă împreună cu voi pe celalt frate al vostru şi pe Beniamin! Iar eu, dacă trebuie să fiu lipsit de copiii mei, lipsit să fiu!``

and God Almighty give to you mercies before the man, so that he hath sent to you your other brother and Benjamin; and I, when I am bereaved -- I am bereaved.'

15 A u luat darul; au luat cu ei argint îndoit, precum şi pe Beniamin; s'au sculat, s'au pogorît în Egipt, şi s'au înfăţişat înaintea lui Iosif.

And the men take this present, double money also they have taken in their hand, and Benjamin; and they rise, and go down to Egypt, and stand before Joseph;

16 C um a văzut Iosif pe Beniamin cu ei, a zis economului său:,, Bagă pe oamenii aceştia în casă, taie vite şi găteşte; căci oamenii aceştia au să mănînce cu mine la amează.``

and Joseph seeth Benjamin with them, and saith to him who over his house, `Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal, and make ready, for with me do the men eat at noon.'

17 O mul acela a făcut ce -i poruncise Iosif, şi a dus pe oamenii aceia în casa lui Iosif.

And the man doth as Joseph hath said, and the man bringeth in the men into the house of Joseph,

18 E i s'au temut cînd au văzut că -i bagă în casa lui Iosif, şi au zis:,, Ne bagă înlăuntru din pricina argintului pus în sacii noştri data trecută; vor să se năpustească peste noi, ca să ne ia robi, şi să pună mîna pe măgarii noştri.``

and the men are afraid because they have been brought into the house of Joseph, and they say, `For the matter of the money which was put back in our bags at the commencement are we brought in -- to roll himself upon us, and to throw himself on us, and to take us for servants -- our asses also.'

19 S 'au apropiat de economul casei lui Iosif, şi au intrat în vorbă cu el la uşa casei;

And they come nigh unto the man who over the house of Joseph, and speak unto him at the opening of the house,

20 ş i au zis:,, Domnule, noi ne-am mai pogorît odată aici, ca să cumpărăm merinde.

and say, `O, my lord, we really come down at the commencement to buy food;

21 A poi, cînd am ajuns la locul unde trebuia să rămînem peste noapte, ne-am deschis sacii; şi iatăcă argintul fiecăruia era la gura sacului său, argintul nostru, după greutatea lui: şi l-am adus înapoi cu noi.

and it cometh to pass, when we have come in unto the lodging-place, and open our bags, that lo, each one's money in the mouth of his bag, our money in its weight, and we bring it back in our hand;

22 A m adus şi alt argint, ca să cumpărăm merinde. Nu ştim cine a pus argintul în sacii noştri.``

and other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food; we have not known who put our money in our bags.'

23 E conomul a răspuns:,, Fiţi pe pace! Nu vă temeţi de nimic. Dumnezeul vostru, Dumnezeul tatălui vostru, v'a pus pe ascuns o comoară în saci. Argintul vostru a trecut prin mînile mele.`` Şi le -a adus şi pe Simeon.

And he saith, `Peace to you, fear not: your God and the God of your father hath given to you hidden treasure in your bags, your money came unto me;' and he bringeth out Simeon unto them.

24 O mul acesta i -a băgat în casa lui Iosif; le -a dat apă de şi-au spălat picioarele; a dat şi nutreţ măgarilor lor.

And the man bringeth in the men into Joseph's house, and giveth water, and they wash their feet; and he giveth provender for their asses,

25 E i şi-au pregătit darul pînă la venirea lui Iosif, la amează; căci aflaseră că au să mănînce la el.

and they prepare the present until the coming of Joseph at noon, for they have heard that there they do eat bread.

26 C înd a ajuns Iosif acasă, i-au dat darul, pe care i -l aduseseră, şi s'au aruncat cu faţa la pămînt înaintea lui.

And Joseph cometh into the house, and they bring to him the present which in their hand, into the house, and bow themselves to him, to the earth;

27 E l i -a întrebat de sănătate; şi a zis:,, Bătrînul vostru tată, de care aţi vorbit, este sănătos? Mai trăieşte?``

and he asketh of them of peace, and saith, `Is your father well? the aged man of whom ye have spoken, is he yet alive?'

28 E i au răspuns:,, Robul tău, tatăl nostru, este sănătos; trăieşte încă``. Şi s'au plecat şi s'au aruncat cu faţa la pămînt.

and they say, `Thy servant our father well, he is yet alive;' and they bow, and do obeisance.

29 I osif a ridicat ochii; şi, aruncînd o privire spre frate-său Beniamin, fiul mamei sale, a zis:,, Acesta este fratele vostru cel tînăr, despre care mi-aţi vorbit?`` Şi a adăugat:,, Dumnezeu să aibă milă de tine, fiule!``

And he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth Benjamin his brother, his mother's son, and saith, `Is this your young brother, of whom ye have spoken unto me?' and he saith, `God favour thee, my son.'

30 I osif a isprăvit repede, căci i se rupea inima pentru fratele său, şi simţea nevoie să plîngă; a intrat de grab într'o odaie, şi a plîns acolo.

And Joseph hasteth, for his bowels have been moved for his brother, and he seeketh to weep, and entereth the inner chamber, and weepeth there;

31 D upăce s'a spălat pe faţă, a ieşit din odaie; şi, silindu-se să se stăpînească, a zis:,, Aduceţi de mîncare!``

and he washeth his face, and goeth out, and refraineth himself, and saith, `Place bread.'

32 A u adus de mîncare lui Iosif deoparte, şi fraţilor lui de o parte; Egiptenilor, cari mîncau cu el, le-au adus deasemenea mîncare de o parte; căci Egiptenii nu puteau să mănînce cu Evreii, fiindcă lucrul acesta pentru ei este o urîciune.

And they place for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians who are eating with him by themselves: for the Egyptians are unable to eat bread with the Hebrews, for it an abomination to the Egyptians.

33 F raţii lui Iosif s'au aşezat la masă în faţa lui: dela întîiul născut, după dreptul lui de întîi născut, şi pînă la cel mai tînăr, aşezaţi după vîrstă; şi se uitau unii la alţii cu mirare.

And they sit before him, the first-born according to his birthright, and the young one according to his youth, and the men wonder one at another;

34 I osif a pus să le dea din bucatele cari erau înaintea lui; iar Beniamin a căpătat de cinci ori mai mult decît ceilalţi. Şi au băut, şi s'au veselit împreună cu el.

and he lifteth up gifts from before him unto them, and the gift of Benjamin is five hands more than the gifts of all of them; and they drink, yea, they drink abundantly with him.
