1 S arai, nevasta lui Avram, nu -i născuse deloc copii. Ea avea o roabă egipteancă numită Agar.

And Sarai, Abram's wife, hath not borne to him, and she hath an handmaid, an Egyptian, and her name Hagar;

2 Ş i Sarai a zis lui Avram:,, Iată, Domnul m'a făcut stearpă; intră, te rog, la roaba mea; poate că voi avea copii dela ea.`` Avram a ascultat cele spuse de Sarai.

and Sarai saith unto Abram, `Lo, I pray thee, Jehovah hath restrained me from bearing, go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; perhaps I am built up from her;' and Abram hearkeneth to the voice of Sarai.

3 A tunci Sarai, nevasta lui Avram, a luat pe Egipteanca Agar, roaba ei, şi a dat -o de nevastă bărbatului său Avram, după ce Avram locuise ca străin zece ani în ţara Canaan.

And Sarai, Abram's wife, taketh Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, at the end of the tenth year of Abram's dwelling in the land of Canaan, and giveth her to Abram her husband, to him for a wife,

4 E l a intrat la Agar, şi ea a rămas însărcinată. Cînd s'a văzut ea însărcinată, a privit cu dispreţ pe stăpînă-sa.

and he goeth in unto Hagar, and she conceiveth, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and her mistress is lightly esteemed in her eyes.

5 Ş i Sarai a zis lui Avram:,, Asupra ta să cadă batjocura aceasta, care mi se face! Eu însumi ţi-am dat în braţe pe roaba mea; şi ea, cînd a văzut că a rămas însărcinată, m'a privit cu dispreţ. Să judece Domnul între mine şi tine!``

And Sarai saith unto Abram, `My violence for thee; I -- I have given mine handmaid into thy bosom, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and I am lightly esteemed in her eyes; Jehovah doth judge between me and thee.'

6 A vram a răspuns Saraiei:,, Iată, roaba ta este în mîna ta; fă -i ce-ţi place!`` Atunci Sarai s'a purtat rău cu ea; şi Agar a fugit de ea.

And Abram saith unto Sarai, `Lo, thine handmaid in thine hand, do to her that which is good in thine eyes;' and Sarai afflicted her, and she fleeth from her presence.

7 Î ngerul Domnului a găsit -o lîngă un izvor de apă în pustie, şi anume lîngă izvorul care este pe drumul ce duce la Şur.

And a messenger of Jehovah findeth her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way Shur,

8 E l a zis:,, Agar, roaba Saraiei, de unde vii, şi unde te duci?`` Ea a răspuns:,, Fug de stăpîna mea Sarai.``

and he saith, `Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence hast thou come, and whither dost thou go?' and she saith, `From the presence of Sarai, my mistress, I am fleeing.'

9 Î ngerul Domnului i -a zis:,, Intoarce-te la stăpînă-ta, şi supune-te supt mîna ei.``

And the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Turn back unto thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hands;'

10 Î ngerul Domnului i -a zis:,,Îţi voi înmulţi foarte mult sămînţa, şi ea va fi atît de multă la număr, că nu va putea fi numărată.``

and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Multiplying I multiply thy seed, and it is not numbered from multitude;'

11 Î ngerul Domnului i -a zis:,, Iată, acum eşti însărcinată, şi vei naşte un fiu, căruia îi vei pune numele Ismael; căci Domnul a auzit mîhnirea ta.

and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Behold thou conceiving, and bearing a son, and hast called his name Ishmael, for Jehovah hath hearkened unto thine affliction;

12 E l va fi ca un măgar sălbatic printre oameni; mîna lui va fi împotriva tuturor oamenilor, şi mîna tuturor oamenilor va fi împotriva lui; şi va locui în faţa tuturor fraţilor lui.``

and he is a wild-ass man, his hand against every one, and every one's hand against him -- and before the face of all his brethren he dwelleth.'

13 E a a numit Numele Domnului care -i vorbise:,, Tu eşti Dumnezeu care mă vede!`` Căci a zis ea:,, Cu adevărat, am văzut aici spatele Celuice m'a văzut!``

And she calleth the name of Jehovah who is speaking unto her, `Thou, O God, my beholder;' for she said, `Even here have I looked behind my beholder?'

14 D e aceea fîntîna aceea s'a numit,, Fîntîna Celui viu care mă vede``; ea este între Cades şi Bared.

therefore hath one called the well, `The well of the Living One, my beholder;' lo, between Kadesh and Bered.

15 A gar a născut lui Avram un fiu; şi Avram a pus fiului, pe care i l -a născut Agar, numele Ismael.

And Hagar beareth to Abram a son; and Abram calleth the name of his son, whom Hagar hath borne, Ishmael;

16 A vram era de optzeci şi şase de ani, cînd i -a născut Agar pe Ismael.

and Abram a son of eighty and six years in Hagar's bearing Ishmael to Abram.
