1 Î ntr'o zi de Sabat, Isus a intrat în casa unuia din fruntaşii Fariseilor, ca să prînzească. Fariseii Îl pîndeau de aproape.

And it came to pass, on his going into the house of a certain one of the chiefs of the Pharisees, on a sabbath, to eat bread, that they were watching him,

2 Ş i înaintea Lui era un om bolnav de dropică.

and lo, there was a certain dropsical man before him;

3 I sus a luat cuvîntul, şi a zis învăţătorilor Legii şi Fariseilor:,, Oare este îngăduit a vindeca în ziua Sabatului sau nu?``

and Jesus answering spake to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, `Is it lawful on the sabbath-day to heal?'

4 E i tăceau. Atunci Isus a luat de mînă pe omul acela, l -a vindecat, şi i -a dat drumul.

and they were silent, and having taken hold of, he healed him, and let go;

5 P e urmă, le -a zis:,, Cine dintre voi, dacă -i cade copilul sau boul în fîntînă, nu -l va scoate îndată afară, în ziua Sabatului?``

and answering them he said, `Of which of you shall an ass or ox fall into a pit, and he will not immediately draw it up on the sabbath-day?'

6 Ş i n'au putut să -I răspundă nimic la aceste vorbe.

and they were not able to answer him again unto these things.

7 A poi, cînd a văzut că cei poftiţi la masă alegeau locurile dintîi, le -a spus o pildă. Şi le -a zis:

And he spake a simile unto those called, marking how they were choosing out the first couches, saying unto them,

8 C înd eşti poftit de cineva la nuntă, să nu te aşezi la masă în locul dintîi; ca nu cumva, printre cei poftiţi de el, să fie altul mai cu vază decît tine,

`When thou mayest be called by any one to marriage-feasts, thou mayest not recline on the first couch, lest a more honourable than thou may have been called by him,

9 ş i cel ce te -a poftit şi pe tine şi pe el, să vină să-ţi zică:, Dă locul tău omului acestuia.` Atunci, cu ruşine, va trebui să iei locul de pe urmă.

and he who did call thee and him having come shall say to thee, Give to this one place, and then thou mayest begin with shame to occupy the last place.

10 C i, cînd eşti poftit, du-te şi aşează-te în locul cel mai depe urmă; pentruca, atunci cînd va veni cel ce te -a poftit, să-ţi zică:, Prietene, mută-te mai sus.` Lucrul acesta îţi va face cinste înaintea tuturor celor ce vor fi la masă împreună cu tine.

`But, when thou mayest be called, having gone on, recline in the last place, that when he who called thee may come, he may say to thee, Friend, come up higher; then thou shalt have glory before those reclining with thee;

11 C ăci oricine se înalţă, va fi smerit; şi cine se smereşte, va fi înălţat.``

because every one who is exalting himself shall be humbled, and he who is humbling himself shall be exalted.'

12 A zis şi celui ce -L poftise:,, Cînd dai un prînz sau o cină, să nu chemi pe prietenii tăi, nici pe fraţii tăi, nici pe neamurile tale, nici pe vecinii bogaţi, ca nu cumva să te cheme şi ei la rîndul lor pe tine, şi să iei astfel o răsplată pentru ce ai făcut.

And he said also to him who did call him, `When thou mayest make a dinner or a supper, be not calling thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kindred, nor rich neighbours, lest they may also call thee again, and a recompense may come to thee;

13 C i, cînd dai o masă, cheamă pe săraci, pe schilozi, pe şchiopi, pe orbi.

but when thou mayest make a feast, be calling poor, maimed, lame, blind,

14 Ş i va fi ferice de tine, pentrucă ei n'au cu ce să-ţi răsplătească; dar ţi se va răsplăti la învierea celor neprihăniţi.``

and happy thou shalt be, because they have not to recompense thee, for it shall be recompensed to thee in the rising again of the righteous.'

15 U nul din ceice şedeau la masă cu El, cînd a auzit aceste vorbe, I -a zis;,, Ferice de acela care va prînzi în Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu!``

And one of those reclining with him, having heard these things, said to him, `Happy he who shall eat bread in the reign of God;'

16 Ş i Isus i -a răspuns:,, Un om a dat o cină mare, şi a poftit pe mulţi.

and he said to him, `A certain man made a great supper, and called many,

17 L a ceasul cinei, a trimes pe robul său să spună celor poftiţi:, Veniţi, căci iată că toate sînt gata.`

and he sent his servant at the hour of the supper to say to those having been called, Be coming, because now are all things ready.

18 D ar toţi, parcă fuseseră vorbiţi, au început să se desvinovăţească. Cel dintîi i -a zis:, Am cumpărat un ogor, şi trebuie să mă duc să -l văd; rogu-te să mă ierţi.`

`And they began with one consent all to excuse themselves: The first said to him, A field I bought, and I have need to go forth and see it; I beg of thee, have me excused.

19 U n altul a zis:, Am cumpărat cinci părechi de boi şi mă duc să -i încerc: iartă-mă, te rog.`

`And another said, Five yoke of oxen I bought, and I go on to prove them; I beg of thee, have me excused:

20 U n altul a zis:, Tocmai acum m'am însurat, şi de aceea nu pot veni.`

and another said, A wife I married, and because of this I am not able to come.

21 C înd s'a întors robul, a spus stăpînului său aceste lucruri. Atunci stăpînul casei s'a mîniat, şi a zis robului său:, Du-te degrab în pieţele şi uliţele cetăţii, şi adu aici pe cei săraci, ciungi, orbi şi şchiopi.`

`And that servant having come, told to his lord these things, then the master of the house, having been angry, said to his servant, Go forth quickly to the broad places and lanes of the city, and the poor, and maimed, and lame, and blind, bring in hither.

22 L a urmă, robul a zis:, Stăpîne, s'a făcut cum ai poruncit, şi tot mai este loc.`

`And the servant said, Sir, it hath been done as thou didst command, and still there is room.

23 Ş i stăpînul a zis robului:, Ieşi la drumuri şi la garduri, şi pe cei ce -i vei găsi, sileşte -i să intre, ca să mi se umple casa.

`And the lord said unto the servant, Go forth to the ways and hedges, and constrain to come in, that my house may be filled;

24 C ăci vă spun că niciunul din cei poftiţi, nu va gusta din cina mea.``

for I say to you, that none of those men who have been called shall taste of my supper.'

25 Î mpreună cu Isus mergeau multe noroade. El S'a întors, şi le -a zis:

And there were going on with him great multitudes, and having turned, he said unto them,

26 D acă vine cineva la Mine, şi nu urăşte pe tatăl său, pe mamă-sa, pe nevastă-sa, pe copiii săi, pe fraţii săi, pe surorile sale, ba chiar însăş viaţa sa, nu poate fi ucenicul Meu.

`If any one doth come unto me, and doth not hate his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and yet even his own life, he is not able to be my disciple;

27 Ş i oricine nu-şi poartă crucea, şi nu vine după Mine, nu poate fi ucenicul Meu.

and whoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, is not able to be my disciple.

28 C ăci, cine dintre voi, dacă vrea să zidească un turn, nu stă mai întîi să-şi facă socoteala cheltuielilor, ca să vadă dacă are cu ce să -l sfîrşească?

`For who of you, willing to build a tower, doth not first, having sat down, count the expense, whether he have the things for completing?

29 P entruca nu cumva, dupăce i -a pus temelia, să nu -l poată sfîrşi, şi toţi ceice -l vor vedea, să înceapă să rîdă de el,

lest that he having laid a foundation, and not being able to finish, all who are beholding may begin to mock him,

30 ş i să zică:, Omul acesta a început să zidească, şi n'a putut isprăvi.`

saying -- This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

31 S au care împărat, cînd merge să se bată în război cu un alt împărat, nu stă mai întîi să se sfătuiască dacă va putea merge cu zece mii de oameni înaintea celuice vine împotriva lui cu douăzeci de mii?

`Or what king going on to engage with another king in war, doth not, having sat down, first consult if he be able with ten thousand to meet him who with twenty thousand is coming against him?

32 A ltfel, pe cînd celalt împărat este încă departe, îi trimete o solie să ceară pace.

and if not so -- he being yet a long way off -- having sent an embassy, he doth ask the things for peace.

33 T ot aşa, oricine dintre voi, care nu se leapădă de tot ce are, nu poate fi ucenicul Meu.

`So, then, every one of you who doth not take leave of all that he himself hath, is not able to be my disciple.

34 S area este bună; dar dacă sarea îşi pierde gustul ei de sare, prin ce i se va da înapoi gustul acesta?

`The salt good, but if the salt doth become tasteless, with what shall it be seasoned?

35 A tunci nu mai este bună nici pentru pămînt, nici pentru gunoi, ci este aruncată afară. Cine are urechi de auzit, să audă.``

neither for land nor for manure is it fit -- they cast it without. He who is having ears to hear -- let him hear.'
