1 D upă ce s'a sfîrşit lucrul acesta, căpeteniile s'au apropiat de mine, şi au zis:,, Poporul lui Israel, preoţii şi Leviţii nu s'au despărţit de popoarele acestor ţări, şi au făcut urîciunile lor, ale Cananiţilor, Hetiţilor, Fereziţilor, Iebusiţilor, Amoniţilor, Moabiţilor, Egiptenilor şi Amoriţilor.

And at the completion of these things, drawn nigh unto me have the heads, saying, `The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not been separated from the peoples of the lands, as to their abominations, even the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, the Ammonite, the Moabite, the Egyptian, and the Amorite,

2 C ăci şi-au luat neveste din fetele lor pentru ei şi pentru fiii lor, şi au amestecat neamul sfînt cu popoarele ţărilor acestora. Şi căpeteniile şi dregătorii au fost cei dintîi cari au săvîrşit păcatul acesta.``

for they have taken of their daughters to them, and to their sons, and the holy seed have mingled themselves among the peoples of the lands, and the hand of the heads and of the seconds have been first in this trespass.'

3 C înd am auzit lucrul acesta, mi-am sfîşiat hainele şi mantaua, mi-am smuls părul din cap şi perii din barbă, şi am stat jos mîhnit.

And at my hearing this word, I have rent my garment and my upper robe, and pluck out of the hair of my head, and of my beard, and sit astonished,

4 A tunci s'au strîns la mine toţi ceice se temeau de cuvintele Dumnezeului lui Israel, din pricina păcatului fiilor robiei. Şi eu, am stat jos mîhnit, pînă la jertfa de seară.

and unto me are gathered every one trembling at the words of the God of Israel, because of the trespass of the removal, and I am sitting astonished till the present of the evening.

5 A poi, în clipa jertfei de seară, m'am sculat din smerirea mea, cu hainele şi mantaua sfîşiate, am căzut în genunchi, am întins mînile spre Domnul, Dumnezeul meu, şi am zis:

And at the present of the evening I have risen from mine affliction, and at my rending my garment and my upper robe, then I bow down on my knees, and spread out my hands unto Jehovah my God,

6 D umnezeule, sînt uluit, şi mi -e ruşine, Dumnezeule, să-mi ridic faţa spre Tine. Căci fărădelegile noastre s'au înmulţit deasupra capetelor noastre, şi greşelile noastre au ajuns pînă la ceruri.

and say, `O my God, I have been ashamed, and have blushed to lift up, O my God, my face unto Thee, for our iniquities have increased over the head, and our guilt hath become great unto the heavens.

7 D in zilele părinţilor noştri, am fost foarte vinovaţi pînă în ziua de azi, şi din pricina fărădelegilor noastre am fost daţi, noi, împăraţii noştri şi preoţii noştri, în mînile împăraţilor străini, pradă săbiei, robiei, jafului, şi ruşinii care ne acopere astăzi faţa.

`From the days of our fathers we in great guilt unto this day, and in our iniquities we have been given -- we, our kings, our priests -- into the hand of the kings of the lands, with sword, with captivity, and with spoiling, and with shame of face, as this day.

8 Ş i totuş Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, S'a îndurat de noi, lăsîndu-ne cîţiva oameni scăpaţi, şi dîndu-ne un adăpost în locul Lui cel sfînt, ca să ne lumineze ochii şi să ne dea puţină răsuflare în mijlocul robiei noastre.

`And now, as a small moment hath grace been from Jehovah our God, to leave to us an escape, and to give to us a nail in His holy place, by our God's enlightening our eyes, and by giving us a little quickening in our servitude;

9 C ăci sîntem robi, dar Dumnezeu nu ne -a părăsit în robia noastră. A îndreptat spre noi bunăvoinţa împăraţilor Perşilor şi ei ne-au dat o nouă putere de viaţă, ca să putem zidi Casa Dumnezeului nostru, şi să -i dregem dărîmăturile, făcîndu-ne astfel rost de un loc de adăpost în Iuda şi la Ierusalim.

for servants we, and in our servitude our God hath not forsaken us, and stretcheth out unto us kindness before the kings of Persia, to give to us a quickening to lift up the house of our God, and to cause its wastes to cease, and to give to us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

10 A cum, ce să mai zicem noi după aceste lucruri, Dumnezeule? Căci am părăsit poruncile Tale,

`And now, what do we say, O our God, after this? for we have forsaken Thy commands,

11 p e cari ni le poruncisei prin robii Tăi proorocii, zicînd:,,Ţara în care intraţi s'o stăpîniţi este o ţară întinată de necurăţiile popoarelor din aceste ţinuturi, de urîciunile cu cari au umplut -o, dela un capăt la altul, cu necurăţiile lor.

that Thou hast commanded by the hands of thy servants the prophets, saying, The land into which ye are going to possess it, a land of impurity, by the impurity of the people of the lands, by their abominations with which they have filled it -- from mouth unto mouth -- by their uncleanness;

12 S ă nu daţi deci pe fetele voastre după fiii lor, nici să nu luaţi pe fetele lor de neveste pentru fiii voştri, şi să nu vă pese niciodată nici de propăşirea lor nici de bună starea lor. În chipul acesta veţi ajunge tari, veţi mînca cele mai bune roade ale ţării, şi o veţi lăsa pe veci moştenire fiilor voştri.``

and now, your daughters ye do not give to their sons, and their daughters ye do not take to your sons, and ye do not seek their peace, and their good -- unto the age, so that ye are strong, and have eaten the good of the land, and given possession to your sons unto the age.

13 D upă tot ce mi s'a întîmplat din pricina faptelor rele şi marilor greşeli pe cari le-am făcut, măcar că, Tu, Dumnezeule, nu ne-ai pedepsit după fărădelegile noastre, se cuvine ca, acum, cînd ne-ai păstrat pe aceşti oameni scăpaţi,

`And after all that hath come upon us for our evil works, and for our great guilt (for Thou, O our God, hast kept back of the rod from our iniquities, and hast given to us an escape like this),

14 s ă începem iarăş să călcăm poruncile Tale, şi să ne încuscrim cu aceste popoare urîcioase? N'ar izbucni atunci iarăş mînia Ta împotriva noastră, pînă acolo încît ne-ar nimici, fără să lase nici rămăşiţă nici robi izbăviţi?

do we turn back to break Thy commands, and to join ourselves in marriage with the people of these abominations? art not Thou angry against us -- even to consumption -- till there is no remnant and escaped part?

15 D oamne, Dumnezeul lui Israel, Tu eşti drept; căci astăzi noi sîntem o rămăşiţă de robi izbăviţi. Iată-ne înaintea Ta ca nişte vinovaţi, şi din această pricină nu putem sta înaintea Ta.``

`O Jehovah, God of Israel, righteous Thou, for we have been left an escape, as this day; lo, we before Thee in our guilt, for there is none to stand before Thee concerning this.'
