1 P e vremea cînd nu era împărat în Israel, un Levit, care locuia la marginea muntelui lui Efraim, şi -a luat ca ţiitoare o femeie din Betleemul lui Iuda.

And it cometh to pass, in those days, when there is no king in Israel, that there is a man a Levite, a sojourner in the sides of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he taketh to him a wife, a concubine, out of Beth-Lehem-Judah;

2 Ţ iitoarea nu i -a fost credincioasă, şi l -a părăsit ca să se ducă în casa tatălui ei în Betleemul lui Iuda, unde a rămas timp de patru luni.

and commit whoredom against him doth his concubine, and she goeth from him unto the house of her father, unto Beth-Lehem-Judah, and is there days -- four months.

3 B ărbatul ei s'a sculat şi s'a dus la ea, ca să -i vorbească inimii şi s'o aducă înapoi. Avea cu el pe sluga lui şi doi măgari. Ea l -a adus în casa tatălui ei; şi cînd l -a văzut tatăl femeii aceleia tinere, l -a primit cu bucurie.

And her husband riseth and goeth after her, to speak unto her heart, to bring her back, and his young man with him, and a couple of asses; and she bringeth him into the house of her father, and the father of the young woman seeth him, and rejoiceth to meet him.

4 S ocrul său, tatăl femeii aceleia tinere, l -a ţinut la el trei zile. Au mîncat şi au băut, şi au rămas noaptea acolo.

And keep hold on him doth his father-in-law, father of the young woman, and he abideth with him three days, and they eat and drink, and lodge there.

5 A patra zi, s'au sculat dis de dimineaţă, şi Levitul se pregătea să plece. Dar tatăl tinerei femei a zis ginerelui său:,, Ia o bucată de pîne, ca să prinzi la inimă; şi apoi veţi pleca.``

And it cometh to pass, on the fourth day, that they rise early in the morning, and he riseth to go, and the father of the young woman saith unto his son-in-law, `Support thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye go on.'

6 Ş i au şezut de au mîncat şi au băut amîndoi. Apoi tatăl tinerei femei a zis bărbatului:,, Hotărăşte-te dar să rămîi aici la noapte, şi să ţi se veselească inima.``

And they sit and eat both of them together, and drink, and the father of the young woman saith unto the man, `Be willing, I pray thee, and lodge all night, and let thy heart be glad.'

7 B ărbatul se scula să plece; dar în urma stăruinţelor socrului său, a rămas acolo şi noaptea aceea.

And the man riseth to go, and his father-in-law presseth on him, and he turneth back and lodgeth there.

8 Î n ziua a cincea, s'a sculat dis de dimineaţă să plece. Atunci tatăl tinerei femei a zis:,,Întăreşte-ţi mai întîi inima, te rog; şi rămîi pînă ce se va pleca ziua spre seară.`` Şi au mîncat amîndoi.

And he riseth early in the morning, on the fifth day, to go, and the father of the young woman saith, `Support, I pray thee, thy heart;' and they have tarried till the turning of the day, and they eat, both of them.

9 B ărbatul se scula să plece, cu ţiitoarea şi sluga lui; dar socrul-său, tatăl tinerei femei, i -a zis:,, Iată că ziua a trecut, e tîrziu, rămîi dar peste noapte aici; iată că ziua se pleacă spre noapte, rămîi aici peste noapte, şi să ţi se veselească inima; mîne vă veţi scula disdedimineaţă ca să porniţi la drum, şi te vei duce la cortul tău.``

And the man riseth to go, he and his concubine, and his young man, and his father-in-law, father of the young woman, saith to him, `Lo, I pray thee, the day hath fallen toward evening, lodge all night, I pray thee; lo, the declining of the day! lodge here, and let thine heart be glad -- and ye have risen early to-morrow for your journey, and thou hast gone to thy tent.'

10 B ărbatul n'a vrut să mai rămînă şi în noaptea aceea, ci s'a sculat şi a plecat. A ajuns pînă în faţa Iebusului, adică Ierusalimul, cu cei doi măgari înşălaţi şi cu ţiitoarea lui.

And the man hath not been willing to lodge all night, and he riseth, and goeth, and cometh in till over-against Jebus (It Jerusalem), and with him a couple of asses saddled; and his concubine with him.

11 C înd s'au apropiat de Iebus, ziua se plecase mult spre seară. Sluga a zis atunci stăpînului său:,, Haidem, să ne îndreptăm spre cetatea aceasta a Iebusiţilor, şi să rămînem în ea peste noapte``.

They near Jebus, and the day hath gone greatly down, and the young man saith unto his lord, `Come, I pray thee, and we turn aside unto this city of the Jebusite, and lodge in it.'

12 S tăpînul său i -a răspuns:,, Nu putem să intrăm într'o cetate străină, unde nu sînt copii de ai lui Israel, ci să mergem pînă la Ghibea.``

And his lord saith unto him, `Let us not turn aside unto the city of a stranger, that is not of the sons of Israel, thither, but we have passed over unto Gibeah.'

13 A mai zis slugii sale:,, Haidem, să ne apropiem de unul din locurile acestea, Ghibea sau Rama, şi să rămînem acolo peste noapte``.

And he saith to his young man, `Come, and we draw near to one of the places, and have lodged in Gibeah, or in Ramah.'

14 A u mers mai departe, şi apunea soarele cînd s'au apropiat de Ghibea, care este a lui Beniamin.

And they pass over, and go on, and the sun goeth in upon them near Gibeah, which is to Benjamin;

15 S 'au îndreptat într'acolo ca să se ducă să rămînă peste noapte în Ghibea. Levitul a intrat, şi s'a oprit în piaţa cetăţii. Nu s'a găsit nimeni care să -i primească în casă să rămînă peste noapte.

and they turn aside there to go in to lodge in Gibeah, and he goeth in and sitteth in a broad place of the city, and there is no man gathering them into the house to lodge.

16 Ş i iată că un bătrîn se întorcea seara dela munca cîmpului; omul acesta era din muntele lui Efraim, locuia pentru o vreme la Ghibea, şi oamenii din locul acela erau Beniamiţi.

And lo, a man, an aged one, hath come from his work from the field in the evening, and the man of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he a sojourner in Gibeah, and the men of the place Benjamites.

17 E l a ridicat ochii şi a văzut pe călător în piaţa cetăţii. Şi bătrînul i -a zis:,,Încotro mergi, şi de unde vii?``

And he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the man, the traveller, in a broad place of the city, and the aged man saith, `Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?'

18 E l i -a răspuns:,, Venim din Betleemul lui Iuda şi mergem pînă la marginea muntelui lui Efraim, de unde sînt. Mă dusesem la Betleemul lui Iuda, şi acum mă duc la casa Domnului. Dar nu se găseşte nimeni să mă primească în casă.

And he saith unto him, `We are passing over from Beth-Lehem-Judah unto the sides of the hill-country of Ephraim -- thence I, and I go unto Beth-Lehem-Judah; and to the house of Jehovah I am going, and there is no man gathering me into the house,

19 A vem însă paie şi nutreţ pentru măgarii noştri; avem şi pîne şi vin pentru mine, pentru roaba ta, şi pentru băiatul care este cu robii tăi. Nu ducem lipsă de nimic.``

and both straw and provender are for our asses, and also bread and wine there are for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man with thy servants; there is no lack of anything.'

20 B ătrînul a zis:,, Pacea să fie cu tine! Toate nevoile tale le iau asupra mea, numai să nu rămîi în piaţă peste noapte.``

And the old man saith, `Peace to thee; only, all thy lack on me, only in the broad place lodge not.'

21 L -a dus în casa lui, şi a dat nutreţ măgarilor. Călătorii şi-au spălat picioarele; apoi au mîncat şi au băut.

And he bringeth him in to his house, and mixeth for the asses, and they wash their feet, and eat and drink.

22 P e cînd se veseleau ei, iată că oamenii din cetate, nişte fii ai lui Belial, oameni stricaţi, au înconjurat casa, au bătut la poartă, şi au zis bătrînului, stăpînul casei:,, Scoate pe omul acela care a intrat la tine, ca să ne împreunăm cu el.``

They are making their heart glad, and lo, men of the city, men -- sons of worthlessness -- have gone round about the house, beating on the door, and they speak unto the old man, the master of the house, saying, `Bring out the man who hath come unto thine house, and we know him.'

23 S tăpînul casei a ieşit la ei, şi le -a zis:,, Nu, fraţilor, vă rog să nu faceţi un lucru aşa de rău; fiindcă omul acesta a intrat în casa mea, nu săvîrşiţi mişelia aceasta.

And the man, the master of the house, goeth out unto them, and saith unto them, `Nay, my brethren, do not evil, I pray you, after that this man hath come in unto my house, do not this folly;

24 I ată că am o fată fecioară, şi omul acesta are o ţiitoare; vi le voi aduce afară: necinstiţi-le, şi faceţi-le ce vă va plăcea. Dar nu săvîrşiţi cu omul acesta o faptă aşa de nelegiuită``.

lo, my daughter, the virgin, and his concubine, let me bring them out, I pray you, and humble ye them, and do to them that which is good in your eyes, and to this man do not this foolish thing.'

25 O amenii aceia n'au vrut să -l asculte. Atunci omul şi -a luat ţiitoarea, şi le -a adus -o afară. Ei s'au împreunat cu ea, şi şi-au bătut joc de ea toată noaptea pînă dimineaţa: şi i-au dat drumul cînd se lumina de ziuă.

And the men have not been willing to hearken to him, and the man taketh hold on his concubine, and bringeth out unto them without, and they know her, and roll themselves upon her all the night, till the morning, and send her away in the ascending of the dawn;

26 C ătre ziuă, femeia aceasta a venit şi a căzut la uşa casei omului la care era bărbatul ei, şi a rămas acolo pînă la ziuă.

and the woman cometh in at the turning of the morning, and falleth at the opening of the man's house, where her lord, till the light.

27 Ş i dimineaţa, bărbatul ei s'a sculat, a deschis uşa casei, şi a ieşit ca să-şi urmeze drumul mai departe. Dar iată că femeia, ţiitoarea lui, era întinsă la uşa casei, cu mînile pe prag.

And her lord riseth in the morning, and openeth the doors of the house, and goeth out to go on his way, and lo, the woman, his concubine, is fallen at the opening of the house, and her hands on the threshold,

28 E l i -a zis:,, Scoală-te, şi haidem să mergem!`` Ea n'a răspuns. Atunci bărbatul a pus -o pe măgar, şi a plecat acasă.

and he saith unto her, `Rise, and we go;' and there is none answering, and he taketh her on the ass, and the man riseth and goeth to his place,

29 C înd a ajuns acasă, a luat un cuţit, a apucat pe ţiitoarea lui, şi a tăiat -o mădular cu mădular în douăsprezece bucăţi, pe cari le -a trimes în tot ţinutul lui Israel.

and cometh in unto his house, and taketh the knife, and layeth hold on his concubine, and cutteth her in pieces to her bones -- into twelve pieces, and sendeth her into all the border of Israel.

30 T oţi cei ce au văzut lucrul acesta, au zis:,, Niciodată nu s'a întîmplat şi nu s'a văzut aşa ceva, decînd s'au suit copiii lui Israel din Egipt pînă în ziua de azi; luaţi aminte dar la lucrul aceasta, sfătuiţi-vă şi vorbiţi!``

And it hath come to pass, every one who seeth hath said, `There hath not been -- yea, there hath not been seen like this, from the day of the coming up of the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt till this day; set your upon it, take counsel, and speak.'
